I successfully created a TrueCrypt volume and mounted it and put some files there.
Then I tried to unmount and just could not.
I can still see the files when I go to /media/truecrypt1.
I have a volume that shows as the following when I do a df -h. How would I go about unmounting it so I can run an e2fsck on it, then remounting it? normally it mounts when the server starts, so i'm not sure how to manually do it.

View 12 Replies View RelatedI installed TrueCrype 6.3a on my 8.1 Ubuntu. Everything went fine until I got to the part where I need to protect my hidden volume from damaged caused by writing to the outer volume (these instructions: [url] ). I can't find the checkbox to "Protect hidden volume from damaged caused by writing to outer volume". The closest thing I can find is an option to "Protect hidden volume when mounting outer volume". Intuitively these don't sound the same to me. There are 2 difference between my setup and the instructions; 1) the instructions appear to be written for Windows and not Linux. 2) I am using a file volume and not a partition volume.
Does anyone know where the option is to protect the hidden volume when writing to the outer volume?
I have a 2nd hard drive that I have encrypted using true crypt. Is it possible to set this up with key files (or some other way) to auto mount when linux boots. I need it in true crypt because there are some work programs I dual boot to use in windows, and need to have access to the drive in XP from time to time, and true crypt can mount there as well. But 90+% of my time is in linux and I would like to have it auto mount through fstab (or whatever way it needs to be). My entire linux setup has been set up with encryption through dm crypt and LUKS (except for /boot). So I would think having a key file stored on the computer and an auto mount fstab would be just as secure as however secure my LUKS setup is. So any way to auto mount a true crypt 2nd drive volume?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed TrueCrypt in Microsoft Windows XP SP3 (no Linux installations present) and I stopped the TrueCrypt service in the Windows enviroment, and then, I restarted, and all the sudden it seemed the PC can not see the Hard Disk at all at startup, nada... I believe I dismounted it by stopping the TrueCrypt service... So the PC no longer understands there is a TrueCrypt volume in place, and I inserted the TrueCrypt recovery disk, and it can not do any thing, I restored the bootloaders, the true crypt loader, and once I finished this, I press ESC, and it says there are no bootable devices, so nothing. I even decrypted the disk, and it seemed that nothing happened with the restore disk...
Is there any way I can make this partition bootable again? because I have every thing in that partition, every single bit of life... I have used TestDisk under Linux right now, but I am unsure of this, and I also further complicated the boot proccess, and now the PC states at startup about missing partition tables. When I start truecrypt from this Kubuntu live CD, I am unable to see the encrypted hard disk even with root, there is no way to see this hard disk, only can be seen in the TestDisk app. I really I am desperate, at least, if I can not make Windows Boot again, maybe just suck all the files out of the hard disk and put them some where for now, I really need to get back to work, and I cant seem to find a solution...
I know here at Ubuntu forums, some one may have the solution. And I do know for sure all the files on this volume are there because of the TestDisk app, so they are there, they are just not reachable.... I keep a number of confidential files in a TrueCrypt container which is a standalone file in my Documents folder. I'd like to delete some of these, but I want to do it as securely as I can, but I believe if I simply hit 'Delete' with the file selected it'll move the file to the Deleted Items folder. This, I assume, means that the file is taken out of the encrypted volume and stored unencrypted in the Deleted folder.
I've been reading a little about the Shred command, and there seems to be some question about whether it works effectively with a journalled file system; and since I have no idea whether I'm using a journalled file system, or how to find out, I'm treating Shred and other over-writing secure deletion tools as ineffective for now.
With this in mind, can anyone advise me how I can protect the file stored in the TrueCrypt volume, and delete it in place, without taking it out of the encrypted area? And, further to that, can anyone tell me whether in fact the file is actually secured while it's in the encrypted volume? For all I know, just opening the volume may result in copies being made somewhere (apart from RAM).
I have a dd image of a full drive (as a file) that was using Truecrypt system encryption under windows. I want to mount the main partition from that image using Linux's Truecrypt. I am familiar with dd loopback devices and have the partition offset, but I don't know how I can mount it like this because I need to use the truecrypt command.
Is there perhaps some way to create a fake device file for the disk image that I can mount from within Truecrypt?
If one uses a free ftp account to store private data such as bookmarks, they might prevent any eavesdropping by using ssh for the transfer (ftps), or alternatively sftp.
However, they would still have to trust the ftp hosting provider, because the data is stored unencrypted in the server.
Someone suggested putting all bookmarks in a small truecrypt volume instead and synchronizing this with the ftp server.
Performance issues aside, given that the plaintext only changes a little in each resync (only a bookmark is added usually), is the use of the truecrypt volume introducing a means for an eavesdropper to break the code?
I have created a TrueCrypt volume, mounted it in Windows, and created an image file for my OS partition using Macrium Reflect (free version). I made a Rescue CD for Macrium, and the setup works great on unencrypted files, but I have no way to mount the TrueCrypt volume, while booted to the Macruim rescue CD. I have Puppy Linux 4.3.1 on a CD, and can boot to it. I'm a beginner's beginner, however, and I haven't figured out how to install TrueCrypt with Puppy Linux running. Getting the Macrium recovery program to run with the TrueCrypt volume mounted looks even more complicated, and I don't know if it's even possible. I want to be able to recover my laptop from a drive failure, as well as protect my OS from bad programs or malware. Macrium reflect does this job well, because it:
1. is free
2. only writes the used space of the system partition to the image file, and also compresses the data, resulting in a relatively small file. (~ 50 percent of the used space on the OS partition)
3. retains drive alignment for a pre-aligned partition.
However, I wish to keep my backup partitions encrypted to protect my privacy. TrueCrypt does an excellent job of this because it:
1. is free
2. encrypts the OS and all data on the computer.
3. protects all backup data.
I like the fact that Puppy Linux can be loaded into memory, so I only need to boot from removable media to work on my OS partition. I understand there is a portable Ubuntu OS, and perhaps this would be a better platform for my goal? Is there a way to combine Linux on removable media, with Macrium Reflect, and recover an image from a TrueCrypt volume?
I have an Ubuntu 10.04 machine at home and apache setup on it (files are located in a Truecrypt volume). The reason for the web server being that I wanted to access my files wherever I'm at (i.e. hotel, work, hotspots, etc...). So far, it's worked out great for me seeing as a I can http download my files (or stream media files). However, I am often on a public hotspot and I know it's a matter of time before someone finds the webserver on my computer. I have the machine firewalled and password protected (via .htaccess), but either way I don't want people looking in on my computer.
The problem: I have used Truecrypt for a long time and completely trust using the program to encrypt/unencrypt a volume container to store my files. Usually, I would remote desktop into my computer and mount/unmount the volume when I needed it. However, after time it get's really annoying to do this. So I eventually figured out how to setup a bash script to automatically do this for me (which I put on the usb part of my phone). What I wanted to do was to be able send the bash script to my Ubuntu machine (via ftp from my phone) and have Ubuntu automatically run the script. Is this possible? What programs do I need on Ubuntu?
I was thinking about using something like cron, but that is for scheduled times. I don't really have a set time in which I need my files, it's pretty sporadic depending on how much I travel. Thus the need for being able to remotely mount the volume when I need it.
Summary: I need a way for Ubuntu to read a folder every minute or so to check for bash scripts to run. I want to be able to send the bash script via ftp from my phone, have Ubuntu run the script, then delete itself (so as to not store the password). I already know the script in which to mount the Truecrypt volume and how to send the file via ftp from my phone. It's really a matter of what program to use in Ubuntu to find and run the script.
I'm using Xubuntu 9.10 and somehow, for some reason I know not what, the volume control on the panel disappeared. Does anyone know how I can get it back?
I tryed adding it with Add To Panel but that doesn't work.
I have a Truecrypt-encrypted Windows [system] partition, that I want to be opened and mounted automatically (using a keyfile) when I log into Debian, since it is also encrypted and I don't want to type two passphrases. It think this could be done with LUKS. With TC I probably have to go with the CLI, but haven't figured it out yet. And I can't add a keyfile to the volume using the GUI. In order to mount the volume I have to tick the Mount partition using system encryption (preboot authentication) checkbox, or otherwise I get Incorrect password or no TrueCrypt volume found. And same when I try to add a keyfile.

All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why?What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

post regarding a "Ubuntu-Desktop-Minimal"-type system.
i installed Xubuntu on my system having a dual boot with Xubuntu and windows xp but when i select to boot on Xubuntu it freezes and gets a message saying that the file hal.dll in system32 cant be found. Before showing me this message i tryed to uninstall the Xubuntu inside from windows xp because several problems showed up after installing Xubuntu. I can boot on windows xp but i cant boot to xubuntu and cant uninstall xubuntu.

I am having difficulty because none of the USB drives I am using are unmounting as they should be. normally speaking when erasing data from my USB key when you come to unmounting it it will ask if you would like to send this data to the recycle bin thus giving you back the extra storage space on the device. 10.04 isnt allowing me to send these items to the recycle bin ad doesn't give the option to do this.
10.10 MMeerkat - When I use a USB-stick or external hard drive, I don't get the "unmount" option but instead it says "safely remove drive".When I click this, Nautilus immediately crashes and is gone.Is this a known bug in 10.10?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've spent the better part of an afternoon looking for a solution to a problem: backing up my installation of 10.10 as an image file to an external hard drive. My research has yielded a lot of suggestions for clonezilla, dd, and partimage/particlone, but those don't seem very appealing, due to a number of issues (can't backup live, copies free space as well, doesn't handle ext4, etc). Also why is clonezilla 150mb?
I'd like a simple solution that can clone an entire disk (used space only) to an explorable image file on a separate hard drive and be able to do it while the operating system is running on the disk. I used to use apricorn ez gig to do this on windows and it worked like a charm, but I can't seem to find a similar solution that creates and explorable .iso image file with linux. I've used superduer on osx, which is awesome and i wish there was something like that for ubuntu/linux.
Very frustrated. I have used Unix for ages so I understood the SysV startup stuff. But I have not had a lot of luck with Upstart. The other day I noticed that on every reboot my disks are getting fsck'd. I just recently put an ext2 on /tmp so this takes a while (the ext4 drives just rip through their journals).
The problem is no one is unmounting them on a KDE restart (4.X). I started out looking at /etc/init.d/umountfs and putting some logging in there. It never runs. This is despite that /etc/init has an upstart job that is supposed to run all the runlevel stuff.
I also tried to log some info in /etc/init/mountall-shell.conf which looks like it tries to do a umount -a on shutdown (which is probably not a good idea; you need to unmount in a particular order). That doesn't seem to happen either. I am not even sure how to troubleshoot this further. I suppose I need to see if the reboot( command has the same problem. Or if I shut down kdm first if it goes away.
I get the following error each time I try to safely remove the USB stick (by right-clicking on the USB stick icon on the desktop and choosing "Remove safely") code...
It used to work without errors when unmounting the USB from Nautilus window, but now, I get the same error when unmounting from there as well. Is it safe to assume that the stick can be removed even though the error message is displayed? What might be the cause?
Also, I do not have any Nautilus-windows opened nor any applications that are locking any files on the USB stick while removing it.
I want to move my / partition to the end of my drive (sda). To do this with gparted, I have to unmount it, but I'm not comfortable with the idea of unmounting root partition... Should I do it from a live cd? More important : is the operation safe?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWe are using Ubuntu 10.04LTS server on Vmware Vsphere estate. We are using LVM and have / and /var on separate partitions.
We have been experiencing an odd issue with sda1 always being fsck'd after every reboot. We seem to have traced this to the start/kill scripts in rc0.d and rc6.d. It appears that the reason the disk is not being unmounted is because some of the scripts are never being run because they are prefixed with S. We renamed and reordered the scripts to reflect what we thought should be the correct order - i.e. not halting the system before unmounting disks. System reboots cleanly now.

basically are we expected to do these changes as part of building new servers for production use? Quite happy to do this but just surprised that this is the default.
Running Debian 8.3.
I have an external hard drive (1TB MyBook) mounted via fstab by UUID to a directory. When copying/writing/reading a lot of files from it, it randomly unmounts and remounts as a different device.
It'll start as /dev/sdb1, I'll set a lot of files to copy to it and then it'll unmount and re-acknowledge itself as /dev/sdc1, the file copying process will crash and the current directory in terminal will display an I/O error. Running mount -a remounts it back to the directory specified in fstab as /dev/sdc1 and the loop continues. If it's just idling, there's no issue, only does this under load.
How can I diagnose what is causing it to unmount?
- Nautilus open in browser mode (the default)?- I click the eject symbol to unmount a usb stick in the side pane.- The annoying red exclamation police light looking thing pops up telling me that nautilus crashed.- Not only is the usb stick unmounted, but the device file also disapears (e.g. no longer listed by fdisk).- This problem does NOT occur when I use other methods to unmount (e.g. umount on command line, or right-click on desktop icon and select eject action), only when I click the eject symbol in the nautilus side pane

However when un-mounting - either through dolphin or device notifier, I get the report that the item is unmounted but then when removing USB cable from the Zen, it closes down and then rebuilds the entire 16GB collection - this takes quiet a bit of time and I worry that I may end up frying the Zen. Is there a fix for this in Suse or is it the zen. it doesn't happen on my work machine running windows though.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSometimes I get a problem with the basic "umount" command. I get an error message telling me that for one reason or another, the device couldn't be unmounted. Usually, it says the device is busy, when I can't see how it possibly can be. When this happens I'll use "umount -l" or "umount -f" or sometimes "eject" but I'm still not happy, because at the back of my mind I'm worried about damaging the integrity of the device's filesystem. What's the CORRECT way to deal with this problem?
