OpenSUSE Install :: Hidden Files - DF Shows More Disk Usage Than DU

Oct 23, 2010

I am running an Opensuse 11.2 system as a backup file server. Several external hard drives are attached via USB and mounted during boot via the fstab file. Recently, I noticed the df command showed the root partition being >65% full, while the du command showed the same drive was only about 20% full. After much investigation, I discovered that some large directories had been created under the /media folder on the root partition that were hidden when the external drives were mounted as directories with the same names under /media. I could only see this when I rebooted with a live CD and mounted the suspect partition without the external drives mounted. Is there a way to examine whether a mounted partition has existing files "hidden" when a separate file system is mounted "on top of it"?

Fedora :: Hidden Disk Space Usage \ Can't Figure Out Where The Runaway Usage Is?

Dec 10, 2010

I'm running into a problem where my system is running out of disk space on the root partition, but I can't figure out where the runaway usage is. I've had a stable system for a couple of years now, and it just ran out of space. I cleaned some files up to get the system workable again, but can't find the big usage area, and I'm getting conflicting results. For example, when I do a df it says I'm using 44GB out of 58 GB:

Code:
[root@Zion ~]# df -h

Software :: Find Hidden Disk Usage?

Aug 31, 2010

I have a productive sever (very old, 1500 days without restart or software update, gentoo distro) and i have a weird disk usage there:

Code:
gentoo / # du -sk *|sort -n
0 sys
2 service
6 mnt

[Code]....

You see that on 'df' i have 67 GB on the disk and 2.6GB avaiable, but du is confirming only 33GB of usage. What uses the other 34GB ? I can't install fancy graphical disk usage programs there, is there any way I can find what is consuming the 34GB of disk using command line tools and standard linux programs? (like debugfs or something like that)

How do I get rid of these files? I can't delete them as they just show back up. Also, I tried to format the drive with gparted and it won't unmount. When I right click and select information, at the bottom it says: Unable to find mount point. Unable to read the contents of the file system. Because of this, some operations may be unavailable.

The "free" command shows that 7019 MB of memory are actually in use by my system, but when summing up the actual usage (or even virtual usage like the example below) it doesn't add up - the sum is far less than what is reported by "free":

OpenSUSE :: Networkmanager Log Shows Usb Disk?

May 28, 2010

I'm wondering why the NetworkManager log file would show an entry whenever an external usb drive is plugged in. It's obviously HAL related but looking at the various files of hal, udev, syslog shows nothing relevant.

Here's the entry just after the usual info about the network card:

May 28 08:35:16 doomed NetworkManager: <info> Activation (eth0) Stage 5 of 5 (IP Configure Commit) scheduled...
May 28 08:35:16 doomed NetworkManager: <info> Activation (eth0) Stage 4 of 5 (IP Configure Get) complete.
May 28 08:35:16 doomed NetworkManager: <info> Activation (eth0) Stage 5 of 5 (IP Configure Commit) started...

[Code].....

This is an opensuse 10.3 with final updates system.

Any search here about the log shows nothing but actual network problems.

One question that I have tried to Google for a solution with no success is, how do you access ext4 from Windows? Shortly after I installed OpenSUSE, my OpenSUSE hard drive "vanished" from Windows 7. aturally, I can access all my hard drives from OpenSUSE, which does support the NTFS. I am quite sure that I am not the only person who has this problem as I know that dual booting Linux and Windows is quite common.

General :: Big Cpu Usage But Top Shows No Heavy Use Process

May 6, 2011

I have been running to a strange problem. For a few days, a few times a day something seems to take over my machine. Suddenly I can't type, or the key shows up about 5 seconds are being pressed, music players halt, etc. In anticipation, I had top and htop running. Sure enough, when this business begins htop reports all 8 cores firing at near 100% for a few minutes. However, top is telling me nothing about who is too blame. The cup%sy on top shows heavy usage, but the top processes are nothing remarkable, mostly just top and htop and conky, all running at around 1 or 2% on average. I am a bit puzzled as to why I can't see the cpu hog so that I figure out what is going on. My question then: Are there some processes (in kernel space?) that don't show up in top, yet which could be hogging the cpu?

Ubuntu Servers :: HW RAID Disk Shows Up In Fstab But Not In /dev/disk/by-uuid?

Jun 28, 2010

I have an SiI hardware SATA RAID card, with two 500GB disks in mirrored RAID configuration. When I first plugged them in and set it up, things seemed to work ok, but on boot the raid controller told me that the RAID needed rebuilding, and it would happen automatically after POST. So I didn't worry about it, and the drive mounted fine, and it's been that way for years. I just went in and manually on-line rebuilt the RAID in the controller's BIOS, and now when I boot into Ubuntu, both disks show up in fdisk, but neither show up in /dev/disk/by-uuid. Am I missing something?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: VLC Shows Black Screen When Playing Movie Files?

Mar 12, 2011

With a default 11.4 (64bit) installation, and the one click installer for VLC at VideoLAN - VLC: Free streaming and multimedia solutions for all OS! - if you get a black screen when watching movie files there are 2 solutions.1)-> Go to Tools->Preferences->Video-> Remove the tick for "Accelerated video output (Overlay)"-> Try and play the movie again, you should now see output.2)Download proprietary drivers for your graphics card - I think theres a thread on the forum dedicated to that.

Example, NVIDIA 8600 using the default 11.4 open source drivers (nouveau?) shows a black screen when VLC uses "Accelerated video output".However, installing the proprietary NVIDIA drivers, VLC will successfully show the movie using "Accelerated video output".To clarify the default VLC installation with "Accelerated video output" ticked - works with proprietary NVIDIA drivers - and doesn't without.

OpenSUSE Install :: Almost 100% CPU Usage By NTFS Drivers?

Apr 30, 2010

I am have been noticing nearly 100% Usage by the NTFS driver. According to top the "mount.ntfs-3g" use up to 100% when I am accessing NTFS partitions (one 1 core I believe). My CPU is reasonably fast Intel E8400 3.0 ghz. I find it horrible that its stuck at nearly 100% just because I decide to heavy access the NTFS file systems.

I have been google online and have seen dozens of similar complaints. Most people haven't found a real solution. Is there really any good solution for this?

When I was running Windows XP, I never noticed anywhere near 100% usage when access the Hard drive heavily. Is the Linux NTFS drives just very bad in performance compared to the native Windows drives?

My system, which is probably similar to others, increases the air flow with the fan on the CPU when it is working hard. Mine gets rather noisy. (don't have it on the floor, but right next to me) This fan speed increase has been lots more prevalent in the newest version of openSuSE.

Have also used 'top' and it looks like xorg is one of the biggest hogs. However, when I use VMware it goes into hyper drive a lot.

OpenSUSE Install :: No Disk Seen When Booting The Disk In Another System?

Jan 2, 2010

My dual proc, dual core Opteron MSI Master2FAR motherboard failed, and I try to boot a disk, used on this board as boot disk, on an Intel based Gigabyte GA-965-DS3. Both systems are x86_64 architecture.

The OS is on both systems is openSUSE 11.1.

On booting the disk on the Gigabyte, the disk is seen correctly by the BIOS, but not by the OS, and there is no /dev/sdX; no /dev/disk/... either. I am taken to a login shell from the ramdisk.

When I just mount this disk on the Gigabyte (booted with the Gigabyte's original boot disk) everything seems fine. No suprise to me, since the disk was fine, and was unmounted gracefully and physically taken off the MSI before the board failed.

I think that the cause lies in the fact that the harddisk controller on the Gigabyte is different from the MSI, and the driver for that controller is not available at boot time.

I have two questions:

- is my assumption correct, or is something else going on?

- if I am right, is there a way to get this disk booting on the Gigabyte (or on another system, for that matter)?

You might want to ask why I want to boot this disk on the Gigabyte in the first place, since I can mount it and see all data on it. I have a reason for that, but telling that story would make this topic too long, and it's too off-topic. Most certainly I will get to that in another topic.
