Problem I have is the Samba server, it does not seem to start up the shares at boot.When I boot the system, nothing is available on the network, I have to run the Samba Server Configuration Tool everytime I want to access a share, edit a share, save and quit, then my network shares become available.I see Starting SMB services during boot up, it says OK.It worked good on Fedora13.

I've configured group shares and only members of the respective group have access to them, but my question is how do I tell samba to automount group shares based on the user group?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been able to get a laptop on Fedora 14 (2.6.35.6-48) working with a Netgear WNA1100 Once up and running, I execute "ifconfig wlan0 up" from root, and everything connects just fine and is stable as long as I stay logged in. But, I haven't found how to do this automatically on boot.
I've tried to use NetworkManager, but I cannot figure out how to get the GUI to show up - it says its running and enabled in the Services gui, but I haven't figured out how to actually use it! I checked to see if the nm-applet is running with ps, and for the user login, I see:
I'm not sure if the "sm-disable" flag is my problem, or how to change it. I'm not even sure if NetworkManager will allow me to set things up for bootup, but that is the path I ran down...
I assume this is a fundamentally easy process to set this up on bootup, but I'm not stumbling across the method. I recall doing this kind of thing years ago when I was an engineer, and before I got my lobotomy to become a manager...
I had a Samba server that worked as expected, but after four years of operation, I had to upgraded for a different reason. After much pain and agony, Samba *almost* works.The Big Problem: On XP, the Samba server "Scully" appears in "My Network Places". On the Vista and Win7, the server is not seen in "Network". The shares can be accessed and mapped if the name \Scully or IP address is provided \192.168.X.Y, but it can not be browsed.

there is no iptables definition, or any other firewall installed, neither on the server nor the client. i've read through alot of howtos an manuals, but was not able to find the problem.
I have recently developed the need for having a file server and am interested in setting up my desktop as a Samba File Server. The problem is that I need to be able to access it from outside networks (physically I'm about 10 miles away from my home network),o I need to also set up some sort of DynDNS service so that I can access the server from anywhere.With this, with setting up a DynDNS, setting up Samba, and setting up my machine to be secure enough for these types of actions. (I just want to make sure it is secure enough since it will need to be detectable from the internet.)

What I had setup in windows were specific files that would auto backup to my samba file server when the network was detected. I'm looking to do the same in ubuntu now. Basically I'm thinking of writing a script to backup the files, only thing I'd be stuck with is how to tell the script to run when I connect to the network at home? Is their software already designed for this.

If i run the /etc/rc.local script manually all the programs start fine, and if i run /etc/init.d/rc.local start, all the programs start fine. But for some reason they just don't seem to be starting when the system boots.
I'm trying to load a HP Proliant w/ Fedora 11 and setting up as a WFS using Samba. However, I'm a bit confused on how to do it. Right now I have 2 36.4GB drives in RAID 1+0 and 4 146.8GB drives in a RAID 5 config. I wanna use the smaller drive for the OS and the bigger drive for the storage. I've managed to load the OS fine, the problem is I can't figure out how to mount the 4 146.8GB drives as a single logical volume and set Samba to use it. Right now all the RAIDs are setup using the built-in Compaq Smart Array utility (or whatever it's called) that's built into the SCSI hardware or BIOS.

I just installed TuxGuitar - very cool - and to get the sound to work I had to install Timidity++ as well. Before I start TuxGuitar I have to execute:timidity -iA -Osin a terminal window first, which is kind of a pain to do every time I run TuxGuitar.How do I get this line to execute on startup such that timidity is running when I start up? View 13 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to setup a Samba network share with a Fedora Directory Server backend. This will be used primarily for Windows users to authenticate before accessing the share. I am using Fedora Core 10 and have all of the latest updates installed. When I try to connect from a Windows machine, I am prompted for a username and password. I enter the username and password of the account I created in Fedora Directory Server in OU=People. The credentials are rejected. At the same time in the log file I see this:

Administrator is the user I created in Fedora Directory Server. If I perform an ldapsearch it will find the user as uid: Administrator so I know it is able to be looked up in FDS. But I'm guessing that's not the problem.

How would I get the SSH server to start before I've logged in?Basically, the problem I have is that if I'm connecedt to my computer remotely over SSH, and reboot the machine, I'm not able to SSH back in after it restarts. As far as I can tell, this is because the SSH server doesn't automatically start up until after I've logged in for the first time.How would I get around that? Surely that is a fairly common scenario for network admins (especially ones who have keyboardless and monitorless machines running).

Need to go into YAST's wired network which will activate the network card. Having checked 'chkconfig', the 'network' is on. View 3 Replies View RelatedI didn't notice any relevant complaints regarding 11.2 in the archives. The bootup & shutdow may be different problems. Randomly my recent install boots up fine or hangs with a blank black screen. A Ctl Alt F2 gets me to a prompt. Startx returns a lockfile comment that X is already running.
From here I can shut 11.2 down and restart it OK. There must be a bootlog kept in /var somewhere. I haven't tried the non-automatic bootup. The shutdown randomly drops back to the logout screen. Usually a shutdown command from there will shut it down. Sometimes shutdown doesn't work, but restart will finish the shutdown.
I wish to prevent the samba messages (mainly nmbd and winbindd) from appearing in the system log (/var/log/messages). I want to allow samba logging to the standard samba logfiles, but prevent the syslog getting clogged up by samba. I added syslog = 0 to smb.conf and reloaded the config but the messages were still appearing. I also tried the following (and restarted the syslog via /sbin/service syslog restart) # Suppress messages from samba.

smbd.* /dev/null
winbindd.* /dev/null
For interests sake the messages I'm getting are below (I'm not concerned about the messages themselves, I can chase them up at my leisure via the samba logs) Mar 18 09:58:29 SERVER nmbd[3808]: query_name_response: Multiple (2) responses received for a query on subnet xx.yy.z.zz for name DOMAIN<1d>. I have edited my /etc/fstab file in order to have it automatically mount a windows network share at startup.
The problem is, that it isn't really working during startup. After I log in, in order to make it mount I have to open the terminal and enter "mount -a".

I suspect this has something to do with my laptop not having made a network connection when the entries are mounted, but I'm not sure. How would I go about finding out about any errors?
I'm using ubuntu 10.04 (gnome) - at some point, I had manually mounted a samba share on the home fileserver,
mount -t cifs //homeserver/sharename /serverfiles
It now boots up automatically every time, which is definitely convenient but I don't know how it's being done. I'm going to be mounting the same share using sshfs when I'm away so I'd like to know how it works. When I googlify this, there is mention of altering fstab (which has not been done) or gnome-mount (which does not seem to be it). There is nothing in preferences/startup applications, what is the automounting mechanism being used?
On my local network, I use my Linux machine running dhcpd and IP masquerade as a gateway to the internet. As it is, the setup works just fine, and I've enabled dhcpd in all runlevels in the services dialog, but for some reason, it still does not automatically start when I boot the machine. If I select it and click "Start", it operates normally, and if I run "services dhcpd start" from a command line, that works too. My only guess is that it's some problem with my config file... it's the same setup I used with previous versions of Fedora without issues, but maybe things have changed?

my eth0 connection is not automatically connected when fedora starts. I checked " activate device when windows starts" in network configuration. still it is not auto connecting and after connection the network icon is not changing to connected status although it is connected.
View 4 Replies View RelatedUp until a couple days ago, samba server worked perfectly. I don't remember doing anything with it except adding another share or two. I can still run SWAT, even from remote computers, but I still have the problem of starting the samba server itself.

In the past (before UpStart was used in Ubuntu) I was able to configure multiple boot items in Grub menu to load the same kernel but into different runlevels. I had configured runlevel 3 (I went into /etc/rc3.d/ and removed the symlink to /etc/init.d/gdm) to be w/o GDM, so that if I had chosen it, my box would not boot into X. How can I achieve the same effect in Lucid?

Then i logged in and removed slim package, reinstalled gdm and rebooted. Gdm still fails to start at boot up. When i try to manually start it, i get the following warnings:

I would like my Ubuntu server to show up as a drive on my XP home machine. I have loaded samba on to the server but I can only get it to show as the printer and faxes under my work group. Also is there a way to have my Ubuntu laptop to auto mount the server when I am on my home network?
