OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 W/ KDE 4.3 [i586]: Editing The Startup Script Manually?
May 15, 2010
I'd just installed a *nix antivirus called Avrira Antivir (from downloaded script & installation files), but it completely froze my system when I tried to start it, and the system freezes at the login screen; which is probably because I selected the option of running it automatically upon startup...So here's the deal: I know that I can run a live Linux usb to mount my current fs, then edit the file(s) that load the Avira processes on startup, but I don't know what these files are, much less which directories they are in!

The download page says the file openSUSE-11.4-DVD-i586 should be 4.7GB. But my download (which gives the correct checksum) is only 4.22GB. What am I missing here?
update: I guess it just meant you'd need a 4.7GB disk to burn it. Admins feel free to delete this as I'm sure it will help no one else

A fault in my USB key killed the contents of the /boot partition. I could restore grub, and got back kernel files by extracting kernel-desktop-2.6.31.14-0.4.1.i586.rpm, but now I miss initrd! (I have currently no means to make it.)Would someone having this one be kind enough to e-mail it to me? (It's around 6 MB so it should be OK.) I'll PM you my e-mail address.

Why does it take almost 700 MB of automatic changes when trying to one-click install qinternet (223 KB?) I Got to the forum to ask this question by using rcsmpppd and then wvdial. Those programs are ok but they provide no progress bar/speed meter.
Also does anyone know why qinternet was dropped from the 11.4 - KDE distro? What a pain for us poor old 56K modem bound souls here in the sticks of Texas! Hope you meet some of you at the Texas LinuxFest, April 2,2011 at the Hilton-downtown!

I have several albums in my Rhythmbox library that I originally ripped in 128kbps and have listened to many times. I'd quite like to reimport the songs in higher quality now but don't want to lose the playcounts associated with them.Is there any way to transfer the playcount over to the new file as it were, or to manually edit the playcount or file location?

I am new to Open Suse 11.4 in fact to Linux. I was trying to install a statistical package "pspp-0.7.8-2.1.i586.rpm" An error pops up saying "[PK_TMP_DIR|dir:///var/tmp/TmpDir.eYc5jn] Repository already exists." "failed to install file: [PK_TMP_DIR|dir:///var/tmp/TmpDir.eYc5jn] Repository already exists."

how to update my system online (for example my firefox 3.0 to 3.5) but i can't figure out how this possibly works. I tried the "online update" using Yast2 but apparently (according to Yast) there is nothing at all to be patched on my system. I tried to click on the Firefox-3.5.5 rpm in the repository web-interface and open it using "install software" but the process aborts because of unresolved dependencies. Is there an easy way to update software without having to download/install every dependency manually?

I got a hold of openSUSE11.2 recently, burned it, and booted the disc up.Now i got a problem.I ain't too experienced in partitioning, so i choose everything as selected in the installation(i downloaded the full DVD, not a live CD)and i got to the partitioning part.I have this:
500GB WD Caviar Blue SATA2
80GB ATA
I installed Ubuntu on the 500gb with wubi and partitioned 30GB for it.Well that one is easier, i have absolutely no experience in installing from a CD/DVD.I saw instlux, but it wouldn't run from Win7 Any guide on how to manually partition 30GB for openSUSE too?

I am not the most computer savy, so bear with me. I have opensuse installed on my usb hard drive and recently had a windows crash that caused me to lose my opensuse boot menu/grub. Before the crash I had to have the usb drive plugged in in order to boot to windows or opensuse or I would get an error at startup....... I would like to avoid this. Is there anyway to make it so that when I turn on my computer It boots directly to windows, and if I want to go to opensuse then I can plug in my usb drive and manually boot to usb from my boot menu? I would run these two together on my computer but I share this computer and having to have my usb drive plugged in all the time kind of made them mad. So I guess my question is two fold..... Is this possible? And if so can I go into my hard drive through windows and place something in there to allow me to boot to it since my grub is back to the origional windows boot or do I need to use a live cd to access opensuse and do it that way?.

I've just installed suse 11.2 with gnome. Now I need to modify entries in the applications menu, mainly so blender starts in windowed mode. Right click on applications will let you hide an entry, not modify it. Right clicking on the suse computer menu won't even allow that. If I could find the file(s) which hold the actual data I could modify as required, but where are they?

Not sure if this belongs here or in the upgrade forum but since the upgrade went OK I figured I would post this here. I come from a RedHat background and am not too familiar with the Ubuntu/Debian way of dealing with service startup so this may be simple. I was running 10.04 LTS on a Sony Vaio and did a distribution upgrade to 10.10. When running 10.04 LTS the sshd daemon started on boot and I was able to ssh into the PC. Now that did the update I can start the daemon using the command "sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start" but it doesn't start when the systems boots.
I even tried creating the entries in the /etc/rc.#.d directories like this:
/etc/rc0.d/K20ssh -> ../init.d/ssh
/etc/rc1.d/K20ssh -> ../init.d/ssh

I did an upgrade from 11.2 to 11.3 at my Dell D820 laptop. Everything is working fine except that with Networkmanager it no longer sets the default gateway received by DHCP. I do receive an IP-adress (wired/wireless, does not make a difference) but no gateway. I have tested with several networks and this problem stays...
Of course I can do it manual (adding an default gw), but facing different wired/wireless networks its very unhandy.
Under Networkmanager -> Manage Connection You can edit a connection. If you do that, under tab 'IP-address' -> Configure: Automatic (DHCP) . Below you can select option 'routes'. In this field nothing is selected (I think that is correct). It must be something simple/stupid but what?

I have a dual boot system on a 500GB HDD. Here is a printscreen of the partition table for the disk. It's a fairly standard set-up but the root partition is almost full (I know it's fairly unheard of but I have a lot of software provided by uni that takes up a lot of space). I would like to shrink my /home partition and increase the root one. I've downloaded gparted and got it onto a live CD. The only thing I really want to know before I go ahead is how will the editing of the partitions affect booting.
From what I can tell from reading is that the MBR has only got listed the place on the HDD where the bootable partitions start. These starting placed will not be affected by the alteration, so will the system quite happily boot in the same manner? One booted I'm assuming as the /home partition will have moved I'll need to alter fstab to mount /home again. Will having /home missing caused any adverse affects on the first boot into linux?

I'm interested in editing the Grub startup menu to take out some of the previous versions of Ubuntu. First, is there a reason Grub keeps the previous versions available to boot to in that list? If it is just in case of a problem with the new installation wouldn't it make sense to only have the most recent previous installation? Anyway here is the problem, when I run: Code: "gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst"
The editing program opens the file named "menu.lst" but the file is empty. How is it possible for this file to be empty yet I have multiple boot options and they all work? Does anybody know what I am running into here?

So I turn on my PC this morning, and it comes up with this telling me to use 'TAB' to see a bunch of options I can use, not knowing any idea on how to use them properly I type in 'boot', it returns with 'error: no kernel' and then I type 'exit', it just reboots.
I've scanned endless posts on the forum trying to find the most useful replies and tried to use 'find /grub/stage2' and 'find boot/grub/stage2' and it says 'find is not a command' so that failed. I then tried to find out the partition my installation is in, which is hd0,1 so I tried using 'setup (hd0,1) which returned with 'setup is not a command'. I even tried 'boot (hd0,1) but it returned with the first error 'error: no kernel'. Luckily, when I installed Ubuntu I dual-booted it with Windows so I'm still able to use the Internet but I would love Ubuntu back and I had a lot of important files on it. So does anyone know how to solve this?
By the way, the way I installed Ubuntu was through Windows using 'wibu', it's worked absolutely fine ever since this morning. Oh and I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 (Loopy Lynx or whatever it's called ;p)(Also, for more information this screen appears after I choose 'Ubuntu' from the Windows bootloader, it doesn't even get to the Ubuntu bootloader it just goes straight to that screen)

To run my other linux distros on another drive I have been manually entering the kernel and initrid info for each distro on the opensuse yast boot loader. For windows 7 it just runs the mbr on the drive windows 7 is on. However I can not get it to do that on the other linux drive. The problem for me is that on every kernel upgrade I have to manually change the info. I would rather have grub on the sdd linux disk take care of it on the upgrades. The drive that holds the other linux versions is sdd. Opensuse is on sdc.

I am trying to run 'yum install cpptest.i586' to run a 32 bit application on my x86_64 fedora Virtual machine. But when I run this command, it throws an error message like 'cannot get the exclusive lock at the backend. Please close any other legacy packaging tools that may be open'. Though, I have checked that there is no other such process running by doing 'ps -ef|grep yum'. And then it goes to sleeping stat.

I have been having a recurring issue for a number of weeks now. Everytime Software Update appears it says there are updates so I click update, enter my root password and then I get this error message:
Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: error: package postfix-2.6.1-2.1.i586 is not installed Now that package is not mentioned on the list for me to untick so I have no idea where it's coming from. It happens each time and everytime the updates don't get done. They just stay on the list and new ones keep getting added. The list is getting pritty big now

I am installing opensuse 11.3 as a text-based web server. I have installed apache2, php, php-gd, php-pear and mysql... Now, I am trying to run the installwizard.php to install this LAMP app and any php file, seems to just download, instead of 'resolve to the screen' in the browser. When I run chkconfig, and see that apache and mysql are running. I have already restarted apache, and it seems to come up okay. I have created a test index.html file, and seems to be loading fine. I have googled for this, and it doesn't seem to happen to anyone else! when I try to yum install php, it says that version php5-5.3.2-1.31.i586 is already installed.
I am using yum, on the command line. Permissions are:

I'm running Fedora 12. Here are some of the steps I've taken as per website:[URL]
yum -y install qt-devel qscintilla-devel qscintilla (OK, it worked)
then install the oracle instant client
yum -y localinstall oracle-instantclient11.2-basic-11.2.0.1.0-1.i386.rpm --nogpgcheck (OK, it worked)
next, add the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to your $USER profile
echo "export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/oracle/11.2/client/lib" >> ~/.bash_profile
and finally install tora itsel
yum -y localinstall --nogpgcheck tora-2.1.0-1.fc12.remi.i586.rpm (NO GO???)
yum localinstall tora-2.1.0-1.fc12.remi.i586.rpm
(here's the output)

I downloaded a live KDE-CD and will install from that on hard disk. My box has 4 GB RAM so I understand I need a *-pae kernel ("Physical Address Extension") to be able to use the memory fully.
Can I install the kernel e.g. from [URL] via YAST, or does it need other libraries / software as well and so the system becomes unstable, would anybody know?
