I am new to Linux. When I installed some applications and something through package manager,Now I get two added options in boot loader with identical names like failsafe and normal. what is that?multiple kernel?

In summary, after updating from 11.2 through 11.3 to 11.4, normal boot works fine, failsafe mode hangs with two fatal errors - "Module atiixp not found" and "Module ide-pci-generic not found". i would like to fix this a) so I have a recovery position b) so I learn a little more. As 11.2 has gone out of support I decided to embark on the upgrades to 11.3 then 11.4 using the zypper method described on this site. I think failsafe boot worked ok with the original 11.2 install, but I never had to use it in anger, so I can't be 100% sure. I did not test failsafe in 11.3, just checked that the typical cd set of applications seemed ok before proceeding with the upgrade to 11.4.
I have an AMD processor, chip set and an ATI 3800 series graphics card, so I added the ATI repositories for 11.3 and 11.4 as i worked through the upgrades. At 11.4 there were some graphics glitches during normal and failsafe boot which were successfully fixed by adding "nomodeset" to both boot options. Normal boot works fine but failsafe boot hangs with the error messages above. Searching for failsafe boot errors is unhelpful since, in all cases I have checked, normal boot fails too. I did try removing "Xfailsafe" from the failsafe options which produced no change.
I am guessing that, in failsafe mode, the ATI drivers are not loaded into the kernel and the idea is to default to some safer drivers which, in my case, are not present for some reason. However, there seems to be little information on the origin or purposes of atiixp so I don't know how to go about fixing this. I have not really researched the generic pci driver issue, but I am guessing that this is a fall back when the expected atiixp is missing.
I noticed that after making my build in suse studio my system freezes immediately after GRUB ( Normal or Failsafe) boot splash screen. I also noticed that this happens only with the specified kernel below. I'm not sure when using Kernel 2.6.37, one had the same problem. I never used it. The original kernel 2.6.34 had no problems such as the one I have described. My systems has no further problems only that it takes several restarts to go past the "Freeze". Below is a list of my system specs:

The GRUB from openSUSE 11.4 has been very stable and non-problematic. I will be buying an Intel core i5-2500K in a few months that's why I need the latest kernel and XOrg-X11-server. What could be causing the freezing?
Last week I successfully installed Ubuntu/Gnome onto a 3 year old Toshiba Vista laptop which worked mostly brilliantly. Today I am trying to install it onto a 4 year old Toshiba XP laptop, but am having problems.
Laptop specs: Intel 1.50GHz 488MB RAM 60GB HDD, partitioned by Ubuntu on install into 30GB/30GB, both partitions over 75% free space The laptop, though old, still functions in XP, and the main reason we're switching it to Linux is that it has issues managing wireless, plus it's fun to do so - learning experience and all. The other laptop has better specs - multiply everything by 2 but Windows was much less reliable as, after all, it is Vista, and switching to Linux there was a necessity.
The Ubuntu is 10.10 and it's the same live cd I used to install it onto the other laptop. It's installed alongside Windows XP and the install proceeded without issue. However when booting in normal mode it becomes unresponsive very quickly - sometimes as soon as the five pips on the loading screen become orange, the last time it lasted a whole 2 minutes before becoming unresponsive.
In failsafe graphics boot it runs without issue. The update manager tells me it's up to date, and I have installed Wine through SPM while typing this. It's behaving as I'd expect it to, with tiny lags on scrolling sometimes (perhaps related to being in failsafe graphics).
Is there some setting (graphics?) I should change to allow it to cope in normal mode? I'm aware 488MB RAM is slightly under the recommended amount, but it evidently can cope in failsafe so would appear to be enough to function?
I have 11.2 installed on my laptop but have a bit of an issue. When I boot it normally, it will not use my full screen, instead it only uses about a 5"x5" box in the center and displays there, but when i boot into failsafe, it uses the full screen.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 on a completely blank machine, empty disks, etc. using a Network Install. The install appeared to run OK, but when it rebooted to do the configuration, it hung. I tried a manual reboot a couple of times, then booted in FailSafe mode - came up OK and ran through the auto-config. Now, it still boots up ok in FailSafe, but in normal mode I get the wallpaper on the screen, but it hangs there.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI played with the graphics in kde4 and seem to have losy my installation. i have tried the rescue system option, recover system options and in desperation (i was just about to reinstall) tried booting in failsafe mode, and it worked!
where do i go to find out what the problem is regarding the normal boot mode? i think my pc is starting to resent the continual use of the reset button!
I have a problem with my computer since it's behaving good in failsafe but is bad in normal mode for example I get no wireless in normal mode.
View 1 Replies View RelatedRunning Suse 10.3, desktop box, Asus M2NPV-VM, Athlon 64 3800+, two HDD RAID 1 config. I was getting 'bad block' errors when logging into Root, ran a search for fsck to try and fix the problem. Found out not a good idea to run while the system is mounted, tried to boot from install DVD, could not boot to a command prompt, tried to open the Repair tool, got a 'repair failed' message. Rebooted again to the HDD, but now it hangs, tried to go to Failsafe mode, same thing.
Was able to boot to Recovery mode, but not sure where to go from here. I also noted when booting to the HDD in 'verbose' mode it was showing a lot of 'irrecoverable error's on the boot logs concerning the HDD.
I've got this really huge problem, which I really want to solve, because otherwise I might even switch back to ubuntu. So here we go. Yesterday, I had a problem with mounting nfts hard drives and solved (you guys solved it actually) it by adding ntfs to the /etc/filesystems file. (I doubt, that it has anything to with that, but it might, so I will just tell you everything I did) I added an ATI driver repository as well, which is probably the key to this problem.(or at least something with drivers) --> not sure if I installed anything
So however, the problem is now, that the screen tells me, the signal would die just before the log in screen appears. ("No signal" --> screen goes to standby --> can't wake it up again--> no opensuse for me) I'm now running the system in some sort of safe mode and it works, but I think, that it is using my on board graphic card and not the actual "radeon hd 5600", which provides much better quality. just looked it up, yes it is using the crappy one (on board) So here's the question: First of all why does this error occur(worked fine before) and secondly how can I fix it?
I've recently added a new hard disk and due to mother board controllers this new hard disk is known as sda.Before that my boot partition was /dev/sda3 and know this changed to sdb3.Whenever grub menu appears and I choose opensuse,it can't find /dev/sda3 .It seems that I should edit menu.lst or change boot loader parameter.something like root (hd1,2).But I don't how I can do this with opensuse boot loader.Though I could do this with CentOS easily.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI found what I believe to be odd behavior on an OpenSuSE 11.0 computer today. I needed to add some disk space on one of our computers and here is what I did: This computer had a separate disk for swap space so I deactivated swap (swapoff -a) and then removed the swap entry from /etc/fstab. I then shut down the computer and replaced what was a single disk used only for swap with a RAID1 hardware mirror.
I then booted the system and added a swap partition and another file system on the new RAID1 volume. Even after activating the new swap space with swap on, no swap ever seems to be actually allocated. The swap space shows up in top, free, "swap -s" and vmstat, but never gets used. I realize that a reboot will result in the swap being used, but is there anyway to get the kernel to use the swap without a reboot.
It's probably worth noting that I verified this behavior on a second computer. That is I turned off swap, removed the swap entry in /etc/fstab and then rebooted. Swap is never actually allocated until a second reboot. By the way, this was discovered when some of our users attempted to run java on the system where I did the first work and they got:

Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Could not create the Java virtual machine.
Yesterday, java was working fine and I got the same results on my test computer. Is this a kernel bug or just odd behavior?

I have had to reinstall SuSE 11.2. After its successful completion it got into a strange situation: the boot loader identified a boot record on the hard drive and displayed the appropriate message on the screen - but then nothing happened. When I restarted the system with the live CD and chose "boot from hard drive" it got to the normal boot menu without difficulty. I have no idea why the second method succeeds while the first fails
View 3 Replies View RelatedI got an HP ProBook 4520s that comes with 500 GB with Windows 7.
It comes with 4 partitions: SYSTEM, the main Windows partition, HP Recovery and HT Tools.
I tried to have OpenSuse installation to resize the Windows larger partition but it said that it couldn't with this message:
"The partition on disk /dev/sda is not readable by the partitioning tool parted, which is used to change the partition table.
You can use the partitions on disk /dev/sda as they are. You can format them and assign mount points to them, but you cannot add, edit, resize, or remove partitions from that disk with this tool."
So I resized the Windows partition from Windows 7 and added 3 partitions on the empty space for Linux: /, swap and /home. Still OpenSuSE installation has shown this warning message:
"The bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128 GB. The system might not boot if BIOS support only lba24 (result is error 18 during grub MBR)."
I configured OpenSuSE installation to install on those partitions but Grub could not install the boot loader with this message: "grub> setup --stage=/boot/grub/stage2 --force-lba (hd0,2) (hd0,2)
Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition grub> quit"
I already tried this in OpenSuSE 11.4 but I suspected it needed newer parted and grub versions, so I also tried OpenSuSE 12.1 milestone 3 with the same results.
The installation finishes but no Grub boot menu appears, it goes to Windows as if no Linux was installed, although the installed version is there in the 3 partitions that were created on Windows, I just cannot make them boot.
Just a little disappointed. I downloaded the 11.4 Gnome by about midnight, checked the CD for integrity,and started the Live CD, and it worked quite well. Installed it, but troubles started. OpenSuse 11.4 won't boot up in the normal mode, but would boot up in the safe mode only. I am now writing from the safe mode, but would like to boot up normally. It get stuck after the first verbose page. And not a move from there. The laptop is Lenovo T400, Core2Duo with 4GB RAM, screen 1440x900. No problem with any other distros up to now.
View 9 Replies View RelatedNow after my experiments with Open Indiana on another partition, I have rewrite my Suse Grub, that was as in / suse partition as in MBR. Suse partition is intact as well as files in /boot/grub, but in MBR is boot loader of Open Indiana as primary. How can I get back Suse boot loader. On Installation media under Rescue system I didn't find any option for re-installation of boot loader.
P. S. Now I can run Suse completely in Gui without any problem, because, I made some changes, in Open Indiana boot loader, but I would like return a Suse Grub.
I am running Windows 7 and openSuse 11.3 as a dual-boot system. I had to run a Windows 7 Startup Repair, which apparently reset the Windows boot loader, so now I am not getting Grub. How do I reinstall or reactivate the Grub boot loader? I am assuming I have to use the installation DVD?

View 3 Replies View Relatedhad a dual boot system with openSuse 11.1 and Windows XP working OK - Linux boot loader was where OS selection was made (openSuse was installed after Windows) Last week I had to reinstall Windows and this removed the Linux loader from MBR and Windows booted automatically. I wanted the Linux boot loader back,checked the threads about boot loader restoration and did the following:
- downloaded Knoppix 6.2.1 ISO and burned to CD
- booted with CD
- opened terminal with root privileges and typed:
grub (ENTER)
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1 (ENTER)
> (hd0,2)
grub> root (hd0,2) (ENTER)
>Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
grub> setup (hd0) (ENTER)
setup was successful (no error messages)
Now when booting, i have an error that root (0,3) can not be mounted and "Press any key to continue"??? When hitting any key I see that there is GRUB there with all entries as in original state (Suse 11.1 and Windows) but only Windows can be booted. Then I downloaded live eval of openSuse 11.1 and did the same (booted from CD and run same commands from terminal as root) - again no errors but still "root (0,3)" can not be mounted..
This is a problem when Windows is running some malware that cannot be removed, which happens all the time. The problem is all the new hardware or specialized hardware will not work on Linux so Windows is the only choice. I would think the latest versions of Linux would have this problem worked out by now. I installed 11.3 one week ago, only to find that the repair option in the install menu no longer exists so don't bother uses this link to reload the GRUB HowTo Boot into openSUSE when it won't Boot from the Grub Code on the Hard Drive. I also tried this link Re-Install Grub Quickly with Parted Magic which does not work either. On step 2 typing grub returns the error message "grub command not found". You can use GRUB if you boot the install DVD and select Rescue Boot. However when you type find /boot/grub/menu.lst the error message "file not found" is returned.
I did the following to restore my GRUB boot record. Boot the install DVD and select the update option during installation. Change all the repositories to enable except the NVIDIA repository, it is not responding at this time. When the system comes up go into Yast and open the boot loader. It should have your original boot menu in memory. Change the default to another option and re-write the MBR. This will write a new MBR using the original data updated with your new default. Re-boot and then change your default back. I am just a NewBe so this may not be exactly correct but I hope it saves someone like me some time fixing a MBR re-writing by the Windows installer.
I've installed fglrx drivers with 1click install on openSuse11.3. If I try to boot in "normal mode" I end up in black screen. However if I boot in safe mode, then login and startx, everything works ok

When openSUSE was installed, GRUB information was installed in the Extended partition rather than in the MBR.
I have a triple boot system: Windows XP Pro, openSUSE, and another popular distro on Linux. The other distro put GRUB info in MBR. Now when I boot up it goes to member first. If I select openSUSE, the GRUB info in the extended partion is accessed and a 2nd selection screen is displayed.
I tried reloading the GRUB data for openSUSE selceting to install it in MBR but this does not seem to work.
How do I get rid of the GRUB stuff in the extended partition so that the 2nd GRUB screen does not get displayed?

I use Suse Linux 11.1 on a VMware Workstation 6.5.3, and I've run into the following strange behavior: occasionally (happened two-three times in the last several days), I get instead of the usual boot options screen, which is of green color, a screen with the same content but which is predominantly blue; in fact it contains a sort of snowscape with a penguin walking across it. So far I haven't noticed anything wrong with my machine; but I'm curious if anybody else has noticed it. Could it be some malware
View 2 Replies View RelatedPrevious installation (11.1) left boot manager intact and I had three options on menu. Windoze, OS/2 and Opensuse. They all worked and if I selected Opensuse I then got a Grub boot screen with normal options from which I could start opensuse as usual.
New installation of 11.3 I selected MBR option but think I must have left grub as the boot method. I now boot into the grub screen but if I select OS/2 there is only Windoze left on menu and no OS/2.
What should I use to put back the booting to how it was? Can I use opensuse program to do it or should I use OS/2 partition manager?
Everything went fine but whenever I rebooted, Ubuntu 10.10 was not an option in the boot list. However, Windows shows up and boots just fine. I am currently tri booting (not sure if that's the correct term) Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.10, and OpenSuse each on a hard drive of their own. In the dolphin file manager I can still see all the files for Ubuntu so I know it was not partitioned over or deleted.
