my OpenSuse 11.3 worked absolutely perfect - till now ! It suddenly started not to load KDE, but instead prompts the login screen. When i then log in, it just crashes after a minute or so. I tried to boot in IceWm and it appeared more stable to me, but when i opened a programm like firefox or gimp, this Environment crashed too.
View 4 RepliesRecently upgraded to 11.04 - everything was working well in 10.04. However, running programs in wine (or running wincfg) now causes the xserver to lockout after a random interval. At best, I get dumped back to the gdm, at worst it needs a hard reboot. I've tried using wine versions 1.3 and 1.2, but both cause the same problem. I've also tried installing ldfontconfig from 10.04 as I read that this was a resolution for people having similar issues, but no joy.
I'm running 64 bit ubuntu, and have an ati graphics card
This is a real deal breaker for me - I need MSOffice, but really don't want to go through the hassle of downgrading to 10.04.

I have a Radeon HD 6370M with proprietary drivers.
I run an old Toshiba Satellite M35x S114 Laptop with Debian Testing, it always runned smoothly - although it IS testing . Since the latest update to kernel 2.6.32 , the X server just freezes. The init goes all the way to gdm, and then a blank screen , no mouse pointer, no way to get out of this screen (not CTRL+ALT+BACSPACE not CTRL+ALT+F1 / F2 ... etc) just a hard reset.
I can boot to the older .30 kernel with absolutely no problem, gdm starts normally login successfull (as I am able to write this on the reffered machine and all).

after the install with kde selected i get a command line however typing startx tells me no startx installed, startkde says "$DISPLAY is not set or cannot connect to the X server."

I was about to do upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4.I was following the guide I found in opensuse's website. I was to the point where I had to disable all 11.3 repositories and add the 11.4 at that point I forgot to change my nvidia repository ( I have a g210m graphic card).
thus after the upgrade the X could not start at all. I think this was because Yast could not find the nvidia driver.
Using text mode YaSt2 I added the nvidia driver but after restart I can not see and X running. I receive an error message that the current kernel can not be loaded!!!
I also checked in command line if there is something like Sax2.. but I couldnot find anything.
I am trying to install a Java based game to try it out and i keep getting a crash report can anyone assist me with getting this to work?

I've installed OpenSUSE 11.2 x64 on my Intel Core 2 Quad machine with 8GB of RAM nstallation went perfect. After the main installation, I've installed the XEN-kernel. Booting into the XEN-kernel goes fine.But, now I want to install the first domU (paravirtualized). I use the same installation disk but OpenSUSE 11.2 won't install. It crashes directly. Neither the x64 or the x86 version works.The strange thing is that I can install OpenSUSE 11.2 as "full virtualized".Also, OpenSUSE 11.1 (paravirtualized!) as a domU works perfect!!

The crash happened when I was reading a web page and the screen went black and the mouse pinterr dropped to the middle of the bottom of the screen and froze. I had to do a warm reboot to get going again. I'm using 11.4 with KDE.This is the section of the /var/log/messages from around the time of the crash at 16.42/16.44.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having plasma crashes for the past few days. I'm running KDE 4.5.2 and it was all running fine. Then the latest runs of updates happened and now I can't get a desktop. KDE runs but plasma fails to start leaving me with a black screen and a mouse pointer. This happens in both failsafe and normal, with or without a fresh .kde4 folder and consistently! I think I've totally destroyed my Suse install, but I have no idea what happened.
I was running Yast's "Create a backup" utility and my screen totally went black and kicked me to the login screen. I was unable to log in, except to a terminal.
So, then I tried to restart X (by typing startx) and I get "Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0"
I've tried running the repair utility, and it doesn't work. Through a number of commands, I was able to start up a second X session, but that wasn't really much help.
My system just crashed and I had to reboot. The only interesting message I have found in the logs before the crash was :

So I installed this system with the net install disk. I really don't want to do that again. It said it needed one update shortly after install and I figured that a net install would pretty much be up to date and I would be fine to wait on that for a day or two. Wrong. I used bit torrent for about 20 hours and downloaded ~60 GB's to the external hard drive. After a while while clicked the little update button closed every thing else then hit apply.
Walk off, come back and the computer is completely non-responsive and the monitor is not getting a feed from the tower. Not even any num-lock blinky light action on the key board. I gave it a minute or two to show any kind of life then turned it off. It came back on well enough to get online and post this but, like the title indicates, that package manager appears to be broken in some way. In Debian based systems there is a command that clears this up. Is there an equivalent for this distro?

The above pertains to a fire fox update of some kind. I still have the install disk handy but would rather not wait the 3 hours it takes to download the packages. How I can fix this. I switched from Ubuntu to SUSE because it is supported by online learning soft ware I have access to.
Bug-buddy tells me vmware-user crash on every-time I boot up. I don't know what to do about this just pop-up without i changed anything on my machine. I saved a "crash report" on the desktop but couldn't understand what was the "problem" when I read it.

My wifes computor crashed during an update with a message to fill in a report. It would not respond to any key presses. The computor has been running 11.3 since it was realeased without problems other than jerky video. The computor will not boot it asks for the password but does not accept it, Although I can see the Home folder it does not mount. I have tried testdisk but although it sees the partions it cannot acess them.

But having a integrated nvidia 6100. Kinda make my keyboard crash at times. I ask my friend parent. And they said they give me there for FREE. So here I am with a Radeon X700 PRO (RV410) (PCIE). I have a x32 bit computer ^.^ and 11.2. But I'm having trouble finding good info on install the driver. So I can used it to play games and such. I have a Geforce GTX 460 GPU and I recently switched from Ubuntu to Suse 11 and I have installed the latest Nvidia drivers (the same as I had on Ubuntu) In Ubuntu I had configured the xserver to display my desktop on my LCD monitor and my LED TV as clones and everything worked fine When I change the settings in Suse everything works fine until I restart the Xserver. All my settings disappear and everything is back to the standard settings again. It doesn't seem to make any difference whether I have root privileges or not, and I have tried saving to etc/X11/xorg.conf., etc/X11/xorg.conf.install, etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup but each time I reboot everything is back to the default settings again. In Ubuntu I just saved the new settings to etc/X11/xorg.conf. and restarted the Xserver and all was fine.

Here's the thing: When I work in Xfce session or in Xubuntu session (10.10 on Acer Aspire One) the whole DE switches from Xfce to Gnome. I see it not only on the change of the desktop wallpaper, but on application menu, context menu etc. It changes from my Xfce setup, which I know and love, to Gnome and then back in some 1 to 3 second interval. It switches back and forth untill it finally stays on Gnome. I love Gnome, but would like to have working Xfce on this machine.
I googled for similar problems and possible solutions before posting here, but wasn't successful.
I'm running the latest Xubuntu and can't seem to kill the xserver to install the nvidia dev drivers. where I could find the program to kill the server? I tried Top and it kept coming back!

I ran the simple installation: Code: lynx --source [URL] Everything downloaded and installed so I logged off, ran xwmconfig and set it to gnome and then tried starting my xserver and my screen turns black with a single white dash in the corner. My keyboard doesn't respond (the lock lights won't turn on) and I'm stuck on this black page. I tried changing xwmconfig back to KDE and the same thing happens
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've been running Ubuntu on my PC for a while. I liked it so much that I decided to see if I could give new life to my old Sawtooth G4. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 using the alternative installer and everything seemed to be going fine. However, and without warning, the video cut off. I restarted only to have the same thing happen repeatedly.
what's causing this problem and how I can resolve it? I'm not sure if this helps, but my G4 has been modified. It has a ATI Radeon 9200 video card. It also has a 1.2 Ghz processor.
I'm running a system where we had a 62 TB XFS filesystem running on top of a LVM2 logical volumes (which in turn is comprised of 5 PVs, each of which is a external 16 bay RAID). Well, this weekend there were some I/O errors on the filesystem. I rebooted and then ran xfs_repair. The filesystem looked ok, but then I noticed using df, that it was only reporting 51 TB!
I looked at pvdisplay and also noticed the entry for one of the PVs is as follows:
Please note where it says that 12.00 TB is 'not usable'. I don't know what precisely is meant by 'not usable'. I looked back and it looks like it's been this way before the problems this weekend, but it is very suspicious.
I really have no idea as to how to proceed. I've never seen anything like this before. lvdisplay says the volume is 61.85 TB. parted says the filesystem on top of this volume is 68.0 TB. xfs_info says the volume is 51 TB, which is what df -h is also saying.
The system is Centos 5.x (not sure which version, but the kernel is 2.6.18-128.1.14.el5). Hardware is a Dell Poweredge 2950 with an LSI fusion SAS card, which is connected to a SecurStor ES RAID 16 bay unit w/ 4 additional JBODs.
I have Lenovo 3000 n200. I'm new in debian, but it's great to me! I wan't to stay with this distro, but i Can't upgrade this to testing or unstable version. Lenny have too old packagges for me. All versions of squeeze (downloaded or upgrade from lenny) is broken. I can't run xorg. For about 2 weeks i'm serching for answer and i only found that this is xserver-xorg-conf. That's true this is the package that is broken, but cannot install this.
When i upgade system the synaptic package manager write me one package is broken (xserver-xorg-conf), so i delete it and install one more time. This same problem. So i downloaded and i have this same problem. When i restart system i cannot run xserver and gnome.
After starting the Nvidia driver installer I get the error message "please exit x before installing". I read the manual page for X. From the console I typed X -terminate. I get the error message "Fatal server error" "Server is already active for display 0". how to exit from X.

View 4 Replies View RelatedThe graphical login screen is loaded just fine. Though very shortly after (a moment after the loading screen could be seen) it crashes back to the graphical login. And that happens no matter what wm I'm trying - gnome, kde3, kde4, e16, e17, even twm.
It happened after the logout after a zypper up yesterday morning. Looking through the list of what packages were upgraded (two machines, both last zypper up'ed last Sunday, checked on the second one after the problem with the first one), the only packages which might be responsible are kwin or qt4.
The graphics card seems to be fine (NVidia 9600), as it happens whether or not I use nv or the propietary driver. Also tried reinstalling it from the repo as well as using the binary blob from NVidia. Has been tested on Windows and games are running fine there, so it shouldn't be the card.
What is strange, is that when calling upon sax2 -r from runlevel three, the initial screen loads nicely, but sax2 crashes back to the cli once one presses 'Change Configuration'. No error messages are being printed.
Any pointers on how I can narrow down the cause (and get it fixed)?

Iceweasel and Icedove spontaneously crash, sometimes individually, sometimes together. Upon restart they will both run, but the amount of time they run before crashing again decreases with each crash. The way to extend use of these programs is to reboot Debian. (I typically run my computer 24/7 to run community service programs.)
How do I get these programs to run without spontaneously crashing?
