OpenSUSE :: After Updating Online 11.3 KDE Is Not Working Anymore

Oct 4, 2010

After a lot of work I succeeded in making my Icon 225 Mobile Broadband working under Linux, so I immediately took advantage of this by updating my system. But unfortunately not everything went well. I have to say something:in Linux when you solved a problem another one pops up. And this is what happened to me. The first problem was the following error message: PackageKit Error repo-not-available: File '/repodata/repomd.xml' not found on medium [URL]

It seems that in the Online update system there is a error: or the address is wrong or something is not working as it should be. Anyway I got over it and the system started to download the updates and so on. At the end the system asked me to reboot and I did it. Unfortunately a cold shower was waiting me : the KDE interface did not work anymore, the only thing I could see was something like a fog all around the video. The mouse cursor was a dark square. I was still able to hear the welcome sound so I deduced that only the graphic interface was corrupted. I rebooted again and when the system show me the booting choices:

1) Desktop opensuse 11.3-2.6.34.7-0.3
2) Failsafe opensuse 11.3-2.6.34.7-0.3
3) windows 1
4) windows 2
5) Floppy

I chose this time the second one (I think it is like a safe mode)and fortunately it worked but the system looked like having lost brightness (I think this choice change the card driver). Now I do not know why the KDE inrface got corrupted, because I download everything from the opesuse website, so no strange repository has been installed. I checked in the little manual supplied with the DVD and I found the following suggestion: If the KDE interface got corrupted please try to remove the cache files of the KDE desktop using the following command rm -rf /tmp/kde-user /tmp/ksocket-user

Software :: Online Updating SuSE - Kernel Rpm Could Not Be Installed

Apr 9, 2010

There was a kernel update included in my last three attempts of online updating SuSE 11.2 -- all of which which ended with an error, something like kernel rpm could not be installed (one can't copy that out of the YAST-window ).

The new kernel-relevant directories are there under /boot, the original 2.6.31.5 is gone. This produced lots of errors during the next boot until I manually re-assigned links in /lib/modules pointing to the new kernels. "uname -a" shows my old kernel (see also this thread: [url].

I ran "rpm --rebuilddb" and re-tried the installation, all to no avail.

In the message box during install came about 1,5 MB of errors, a brief extract is shown below:

Code:

Any ideas how to proceed? Can one delete the rpm database and rebuild it from the online repositories?

OpenSUSE Install :: Online Update In Virutal Box?

Apr 21, 2010

On my work computer I installed Opensuse11.2 in VirtualBox. However online update or installs which are downloaded through YAST2 are not working. I get the message "Failed to download media ....." and that's it. I configured the proxy and when using the test proxy button it tells me that the proxy works OK. If I copy the link from yast into Firefox I get to the site of the repositories without problems only Yast cannot connect. Neither from the GUI nor from the console. I had no problems with Opensuse11.0 and previous versions. WHat is the problem?

OpenSUSE Install :: Online Upgrade From 10.3 To 11.3 - Can't Access Physically

Jan 13, 2011

my server is still running on 10.3 and I want to upgrade it to 11.3. I can't access it physically so it has to be an online upgrade. I have already learned that it is possible to upgrade from 11.x to 11.3 using Zypper from this nice german tutorial (Upgrade). But does it also work from 10.3? Should I upgrade all at once or every single version for itself?

Not sure this is the right place and I feel really stupid for asking this but, I want to change the frequency of the online update checks but, for the life of me, cannot find out how. During install, I can configure it but I now want something different. I thought that there was a topic with yast under software but no. Only "online update" which basically give me manual update. I click on configure but same screen appears.

OpenSUSE Install :: Automatic Online Update In YaST?

May 21, 2011

in the last few days, Kpackagekit, which I use to update my system (openSUSE 11.4) had some difficulties to

1. install updates for flashplugin, because whenever you accept the license, Kpackagekit closes, and starts from beginning = a never ending cycle is started

2. fetch updates from Packman. It always throws a message with connection timeout - in Zypper and YaST no such problem occurs

Thats why I have fiddled around in YaST online update and found a feature "automatic online update". For that you need an extra package yast-online-update-configuration. I installed it and configured it to do automatic Updates.

So now I have a question on how it works. Because I have some additional repos activated: KDE updated Apps, KDE extra and the KDE release 4.6 repo, which brings the most recent KDE updates for KDE 4.6.

These repos have priority 90 whereas all the other repos - Packman, OSS, Non-OSS, Contrib etc. have prio 99.

Will YaST install all the updates from KDE with this setup? I am asking, because when I did online updates in Yast before, with prio 99 for the KDE repos, it did not update them, unless I choosed, "Packages --> update all, if newer version is available". I would like to set Kpackagekit into silent and just stick with YaST for that, but have an automatic system update.

OpenSUSE Install :: Updating From 11.1 To 11.2

Nov 30, 2009

Been using suse since version 5.x (yes that long). I updated from suse to opensuse 10.3 (sorry I am broke. Everything works in my machine: bluetooth, ipod, printer. I moved to 11.1 (I was not able to update to 11.0 at the time because when I tried the installer will go in an infinite loop).

In 11.1: bluetooth does not work, ipod does not work (found that the bluetooth stack was broken same with ipod) then I hear about 11.2. I tried to update (in hope that all the issues where fixed) Updated the system tried to boot and fails: The reason was that was using USB to try to boot a SATA drive. Which I can tell you will not work

Use the rescue system and I can boot the machine, but there is not a single USB (so the printer can not work) It can not see the video card properly (works only in reduced mode 1200x800 16bit) no sound (asound just fails). Tried to install a new kernel and same. I just went back to 11.0 oh well waiting for 11.3

OpenSUSE Install :: Online Updates For 11. 2 And 11.0 Corrupted Yast And Zypper

May 9, 2010

Using 11.2 64 bit on Amd 3200 64I installed 4 Days ago After running a online update yesterday with Yast which was completely finished, starting the machine today, I wanted to add a program Yast reports "UI Syntacs Error Couldn't load plugin qt_pkg" Using 11.0 on P2800 I run an online update 3 days ago. Today I started, the updater reported updates. When I accepted I got the error message "DBus error :Unable to get transaction id from packagekit." Disabling the updater, starting Yast, I got "error initializing the repositorys.Parse error." and "UI Syntacs Error Couldn't load plugin qt_pkg" On both machines I gave the command rpm --rebuilddb On the 11.2 Yast started without error.

I wanted to instal a program when the download was completed I got again the message "UI Syntacs Error Couldn't load plugin qt_pkg"On the 11.0 Yast installed a small Program without error. When I opened Yast online update, I got the "parse error again. When I say o.k. there, Updates are shown and installed. However using the updater kit it reports still "DBus error : Unable to get transaction id from packagekit". How can I fix the DBUS error of the 11.0 (On an 9.0 I had to deinstall Rug and thereafter run only Yast) I can deal with the Parser error myself, checking all Repositories should do it)

Debian :: Server On Vmware Can't Be Found After Being Online Several Hours

Aug 27, 2010

Recently I set up a Debian server following this guide:

However I wasn't able to connect to the internet after the clean install of debian.

I found a fix:

Where x is a number not in use by any machine

Where y is the number on the gateway

These commands are appended to /etc/rc.d/rc.local and works fine.

The server is virtual and running on a vmware installation.

The problem, I have, appears randomly after the server has been startet. Sometimes after 20 hours and sometimes after 9 hours only.

I can't connect to the server through the web (server.mydomain.com). However I can reach my computer running vmware at (host.mydomain.com). In vmwares terminal window I can access the debian installation which is running all fine. No errors or so. I can even ping remote ip-adresses from the debian server without problems. Restarting the server fixes the problem. But it then re-appears after some time.

OpenSUSE Install :: Will Not Boot After Updating

May 8, 2011

Yesterday I ran an "Online update". One package came up with an update available. Quite honestly, I didn't even take note of which package it was. Anyway, I applied the update patch. After that my computer wouldn't boot. Grub ran normally, and some of the drivers, and such would load, but just about the time when kdm would come up, all I get is a blank screen. Monitor says "No Signal". I have to manually restart.

I managed to boot into failsafe mode, log in as root, and then run kdm from the console. That way I can login. However, my computer is very, very slow running failsafe mode. how I can get it back to normal? also, is there any way to check the history of updates?

The install program then proceeded to access online repositories without difficulty, and I had no further difficulty accessing the internet. So why the misleading test result?
