What is the name of kernel optimized for server machine? In my case Firebird database + Apache + PHP?

I don't want to cause damage, but I'd rather not go into BIOS.
My company support a client with an old Redhead server " Linux version 2.6.9-5.ELsmp [URL] (gcc version 3.4.3 20041212 (Red Hat 3.4.3-9.EL4)) #1 SMP Wed Jan 5 19:30:39 EST 2005" My IT department wants to move this old server to a VMware machine and I'm trying to check if this project can fly. Me my self never worked on an old Linux server there for my first question is can I upgrade the kernel with the command yum -y install kernel..... and when I'm done I'm still going to have the old kernel just in case?

I am going to be setting up my first ubuntu server this week, and I noticed in tutorials, that there are different options for what type of packages you want installed. I know a little bit, like what a DNS server is and such, but I am hoping somebody can shed some more light on the subject.I am pretty sure I won't need Postgresql or a print server, as the purpose of my server is to provide a low end platform that I can work on my php projects. I will be using PHP and mysql. I am also using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, 32-bit edition.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI purchased an older Dell (p4 1.8G 256M) just to run some low demand programs. They don't require a GUI - just ssh/cli type of access. will be a server type - no kb or monitor. Can someone give me some pointers where to start at? I've never done a Debian install - the install process may address these questions - but figured I would throw it out here. I've used Ubuntu for several years now but I doubt that it would be the best distro for a legacy system....

View 11 Replies View RelatedI am using eclipse, and whenever a pop-up appears (like auto complete, error detail, suggested fix - usually triggered by mouse-over) over the text field, the caret no longer types. I imagine the text field lost focus when the pop up appears but never got it back.
I can re-enable typing by either alt-tab, or switch workspace then back. But it is REALLY annoying since I need to do this every 30 seconds. The same problem happens to terminal, tex editor, and many other text fields.
I am using an ACER Aspire ONE (N270 atom, 2GB, Intel GMA945). I noticed after upgrading to 2.6.32 kernel but now I have checked with older kernels, they all have the same problem.
I just installed Slackware 13.1 x86 on a new laptop (you probably remember me from my audio post). I am having one other issue. My root file system is formatted as EXT4. When my computer boots, it tries to mount it as EXT3 then EXT2, fails both types and then tries EXT4. Here are the messages.
Code:
EXT3-fs (sda2): error: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (240)
EXT2-fs (sda2): error: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (240)
EXT4-fs (sda2): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode
So, eventually / is mounted correctly, but I think this is slowing down my boot time. Does anyone know how to fix this.

I am trying to look at installing the PAE module on a RHEL 5 2.6.18-53 system and I cannot seem to find that around. I had hoped to find out if installing the CentOS 5 2.6.18-128 or 2.6.18-164 kernel-PAE modules would have a lot of negative consequences? Perhaps one of you could direct me to a download site that would provide kernel-PAE for a 2.6.18-53 build?

I'm working on a userspace application that needs to find if the kernel has a route configured for a particular destination address, and what port it would be routed from. I'm hoping there is a simple kernel call that will do this for me, but haven't been able to find it yet :-)
I don't want to actually send a packet to do this, just query the kernel if where it *would* send the packet if I did.
The only method I've come up with is to get the kernel routing table through rtnetlink then check each entry to see if it matches my destination address. I guess this will work (after one or two tries to get the logic right ;-) ) but I'd rather do a single call if there is one.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to compile a new vanilla kernel on to my Ubuntu server system which has been freshly installed with Ubuntu 10.04 server 32bits. As this will run on a VIA epia-px5000eg mainboard with USB stick I want compile this kernel on a different machine on which is also ubuntu 10.04 installed. Unfortunately currently I experience difficulties when I boot kernel 2.6.34; it says "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown block" while if I load to original kernel that comes with Ubuntu 10.04 all works perfectly well. BTW reason I want to build a custom vanilla kernel is to trim down kernel to the necessary services I need as I am running a server that requires just the essentials. And it needs to support the VIA Epia CPU processor family ( C3, C7 or generic setting which is another hurdle which I won't discuss here ).
Hopefully one out there is able to guide me further as I type step by step what I executed. Thanks for your replies in advance:
Yet I hook up the VIA epia-px5000g with 2gb usb stick, a dvd drive and keyboard ( all usb ). Boot from CDrom and install a minimal system (<f4>) to usb stick. Partitioning part I set it to EXT4 and used full size thus no SWAP. Also mount option " noatime " has been set all to save writes to usb stick.
When the base system has been installed a user has been added, as well apt is being configured to install only security updates automatically. As services I want to run definitely openSSH-server so I can access remotely. Grub gets configured and system will be rebooted.
At this stage I configure the network interface to a static address so I do not need to check my router all the time which dhcp address Ubuntu is using if I want to access remotely.
Now the compile part starts, the ubuntu way. I log in to my other system and execute following commands accordingly code...

A few days ago yast did update my computer to a new kernel-desktop 2.6.31.12-0.1.1.
My mainboard is an ASUS P4P800-VM with Intel ICH5 chipset. This new kernel is not able, to poweroff my computer. Older kernels were able to poweroff the computer.
How can I roll back to the older kernel? Yast does only offer the recent kernel.
In /boot there are only files of the recent kernel.
