Debian Configuration :: Is It 64bit Kernel Or 32bit Kernel Optimized For Amd64 Architecture?

I recently installed debian squeeze 32bit on a second partition of my amd athlon 64 X2 dual core machine.Currently it is using linux-image-2.6.32-trunk-686 kernel.But linux-image-2.6.32-trunk-amd64 is available.on the repository.Is it a 64bit kernel or 32bit kernel optimized for amd64 architecture?
I am running a 32bit Ubuntu 9.10 on a netbook with AMD64 architecture. I have read about a 64bit Flash alpha from Adobe and other work arounds to get flash running on 64bit linux, but is there anyway to get flash to work on an AMD64 system running 32bit Ubuntu 9.10?
I used make-kpkg to build the 3.0.0 source debian wheezy on a dual 3.4GHz Xeon/L1-16k/L2-1mb/800Mhz bus with 4GB PC2-3200 ECC ram and Ultra 320 SCSI, using CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=4 (2 hyperthreading cpus=4 cores). The build was slower than molasses in January! Top reported cpu usage total between 10% and 25%. Why won't the build use the amount of machine it has available. One footnote: I wasn't using swap space. It literally took over an hour to build the deb kernel package.
My notebook from 2003 is at least three times faster building the 3.0.0 debian kernel source. Is it possible that this might cause improvement: make -j4 KDEB_PKGVERSION=version deb-pkg
Could amd64 vs. i386 have some influence? Could the small processor caches on the XEON cpus have an effect. The 64-bit machine absolutely flies doing everything else. I'm miffed! I've used debian since woody, although I am not an expert, but I'm no slouch!
Installed 6.01a from DVD 1 on a system with 4GB ram. Installer installed amd64 version by default. When I try to install amd64.deb files I get "wrong architecture" error messages from the package manager. root@Laptop-RalphDeb:/home/ralphq# uname -r 2.6.32-5-amd64 root@Laptop-RalphDeb:/home/ralphq# uname -p unknown Why I can install amd64 programs and why I get unknown for the uname -p command?
I have been running F14 as a 32-bit system (original m/b was 32-bit). Now the system is on a 64-bit dual-core processor board and I'd like to change from the 32-bit kernel to 64-bit. I downloaded a 64-bit kernel (kernel-22.214.171.124-45.fc14.86_64.rpm) and attempted to install it. It won't install and Package Installer returns a message of the sort that says this file "has incompatible architecture.
Valid architectures are ['athlon', 'i686', 'i586', 'i486'....]". My processor is an Athlon 64 x2. Is it possible to do what I want to do (I only want the kernel at the moment)? Is there some Fedora file I need to modify to allow the system to install the 64-bit kernel for this m/b? Do I need another file (or files) installed before I install the kernel?
I have a system with a missing or damaged kernel and I need to reinstall some software to fix it (see this thread for reference removed xen and kernel is gone). I feel fairly certain I can fix my system with the info in that thread however I don't know if this was a 32bit or 64bit system. How can I tell after using the dvd and linux rescue or does it even matter?
I recently started having this odd behaviour while using and loading cpufrequtils on boot, I don't know if it is happening to someone else.During boot I'm getting( when /etc/init.d/cpufrequtils invokes /etc/init.d/loadcpufreq to load the proper module):

I have 64bit debian 6 squeeze installed on my 64bit pc. I have an NVIDIA gpu which I have installed the drivers for and they work just fine. I also have a 32 bit chroot located at /32 which was created using debootstrap. The NVIDIA 64bit driver gives the option to install compatability driver libraries into the 32bit chroot. Whenever I run any application that uses opengl rendering within the chroot, they segfault. When I uninstalled and reinstalled the NVIDIA driver without installing the libraries to the chroot, and instead replaced them with mesa gl libraries, the programs complain about framebuffer missing. They do not segfault, and some programs that can use sdl instead will work fine. I have xhost + set to allow any programs in the chroot to use the host's xorg. I have the host's proc mounted to the chroot proc directory, and i also have dev mount --bind 'ed to the chroot.
I am using DEBIAN 6.0 and I wannna update my kernel from 2.6.32 to 2.6.38. Every time, I do it but after the installation & rebooting into the new kernel it gives me error "UNABLE TO BOOT INTO THE KERNEL".
I have a problem with my custom kernel when I want to create the Nvidia kernel module.After this finished I installed the image and headers and created the Nvidia kernel module. Everything worked fine.However, if I remove the linux-source from my home directory then I can't create the kernel module.Even though I have the headers for the kernel installed.
I tried to compile an x86 linux kernel from amd64 machine. It is giving errors even after installing "gcc-multilib" But I wonder, it should be simply doable becuase "gcc -m32" creates 32 bit binary . I would prefer to compile it natively on x86_64 rather than creating an exclusive x86 chroot for that. Has anyone tried this on native x86_64?
I have not been using my lenny 2.6.26-2-amd64 for about a month or more.I booted it today, and there were over 30 updates available, inculding some kernel header updates I installed all these updates and rebooted.Well, there are 2 new entries to grub menu:Linux 2.6.32-bpo-3-amd64Linux 2.6.32-bpo-2-amd64 (single user or recovery)in addition to my old kernels.So, I chose the bpo-3 entry, but it just sits there.I have to chose the kernel before the update. Is there something wrong with the update? dit: I just found out that synaptic manager does not show 2.6.32-bpo-3-amd64 at all as being installed.In fact, it is not in the header list nor the image list.
I encounter a problem with the pakage cdcd : cdcd sees my CD, for example the command "track" gives the list of the tracks but with the command "play" there is no sound. I encounter the same problem with the packages cdtool, workbone, orpheus, ...
If I use the kernel 2.6.30-bpo.1-amd64 cdcd works like a charm.
why "cdcd" does not work with the kernel 2.6.32-4-amd64 ?
Is there a way to make it work with the kernel 2.6.32-4-amd64 ?
My sound card works fine because sound-juicer and vlc read my CD correctly
I installed Debian Squeeze on a laptop today, with the official i386 DVD1. At the end, I was very disappointed to notice the installer automatically chose the amd64 kernel (with i386 packages ? how does that work ?). The hardware is compatible, but I'd really like to use the i386 kernel instead. Earlier, you could choose the kernel during installation ; I looked in Expert install with no luck. Where is it ?
I'm currently using FC 9 - 2.6.27 x86_64. (In my Hp - nx6320 laptop with- Intel centrino Duo processor). I have downloaded linux-126.96.36.199. How do I install this with i386/i686 configuration set. All that I want is a 32 bit - linux-2.6.30, because NCTUns 5.0 works only with the 32-bit kernel. I have tried following:

How to install the kernel as 32-bit along with the existing FC-9 64 bit kernel.
I have recompiled a few kernels, but all on 32bit systems so not sure if that has anything to do with it.
Running Arch Linux 64bit, most recent version.
My first thoughts was that it might be my grub bootloader configuration, so had a big play around with that but it didn't fix it. Also made sure support was built for filesystems. However almost all that Fstab mounts are ext3 anyway, and certainly the root and /boot are. Now thinking it may be a memory error so will run a check when I shutdown.
i'm using this guide videos - howto: debian linux kernel compilation, part 1 and the author says i need kernel 2.6.26 this version of kernel doesnt longer exist in kernel.org website and the only 2.6.26 i found is a patch here. should i use the patch? or download another version of kernel?
I'm trying to use nspluginwrapper to run 32bit Flash in Iceweasel. I need some 32bit libraries that aren't included in ia32-libs, like libnss3.so and libssl3.so. However I have no idea how to get them. I've tried aptitude install ia32-libs-libnss3 like it says on the wiki but it just tells me that it can't find ia32-libs-libnss3. I've also tried aptitude install libnss3.so but it gives me the same error. I'm running amd64 Lenny 5.0.5. What should I do?
My new HP625 Laptop came with SLED11 preconfigured - including such special keys as the wireless/bluetooth key etc under gnome. I need a 64bit OS and 8Gb for my applications and the HP site does not offer any explicit support for 64bit Linux. So I installed SLED64bit on separate system partition and can select now 32 or 64 bit from GRUB. There remains the problem of configuring gnome (or KDE) on the 64bit system to take advantage of the keyboard, sound, cam etc. I did find a 64bit wireless driver in the i586-Repo on the HP-site that requires the kernel from opensuse 11.3 and I got bluetooth working with gnome but just for the keyboard alone, I am stuck with finding a decent configuration under 64bit. Is it possible to migrate the system wide gnome configuration from the SLED32 bit installation (as configured by HP) to any SuSEx86_64 system?
i recently buy an MSI 770-45 motherboard with 4gb (2x2gb) Gskill 1600Mhz Ram. The CPU is an athlon2 x4 620, everything tested and working fine except i can`t get lenny or squeeze 64bit linux running because of kernel panics when creating ext3/ext4 partitions during install or running fsck on the system i installed on another PC and moved to this one. The boot shows a screen related to IOMMU problem saying must enable it in bios but no option related to it and no memory remapping also. The question is how i can get IOEMMU working with 4gb of RAM (if i remove one of the two modules everything is fine). I`ve tryed ioemmu=memapper/off/noagp/soft and any thing i found on the web, moving to test debian installation was my last hope really before starting to use the 32bit one, i am planning to add more RAM which with this version is just can`t be.
I am trying to install debian on my windows PC but am receiving some errors with it. I have downloaded "debian-506-amd64-DVD-1.iso" from debian website and am seeing that the md5 sum is correct. I am getting following error when I choose Graphical Install or install.

1. IDE hard disk (80 GB) -> windows is on this drive 2. SATA hard disk(250GB) -> I intend to install debian on this drive. 3. MSI motherboard & AMD 64 processor with 1 GB RAM. 4. NVidia external graphics card based on AGP slot(256 MB)
