While installation of openSUSE on machine already having winXP and Ubuntu, I chose "Edit partition setup", I also chose GRUB: change locaiton to "MBR" enabled installation summary was something like this, shrinking sda1 to 13.02 and sda5 to 12.3 Gb, swap partition to sda3 (old linux), root partition to sda6(old linux), then began installation, and after sometime, while shrinking done with sda5, when started with sda1, it showed the following error- Failure occured during following action: Shrinking partition /dev/sda1 to 13.03 GB (progress bar might not move) System error code was: -3027. Now, currenly, i am not able to have my winXp back, during booting it shows: error: no such partition grub rescue>_
When I move something to Trash it doesn't show the option of "Empty Trash". I can use "move to Trash" and it just moving there like some ordinary folder, but shift+del give me an option for deleting the files. Using OpenSUSE 11.3 32bit.
running 11.2 and lovin itI have come up with a copy of Win7 and want to install it so I can duel boot and play with it. Won't installing it after having 11.2 installed overwrite my grub installation? How can I recover from this?
When I try to "Move to Trash" any file, a message say that Dolphin can't move the file to trash because it's full, but trash is empty. I'm running openSuse 11.4.
I think this function (Move to Trash) was working fine this morning. What it happened?... Maybe "Move to Trash" files in a pen drive was the cause of the problem.
I have a problem with a couple of folders in the Trash. If I click on the Trash icon, 2 foldersare there, and when I try to delete them, it just says "Failed to delete the item from the trash"
But when I go to .local/share/Trash there are no files there! Anyway, I tried using the command "sudo rm -rf .local/share/Trash", it shows no error, but the files continue when I click in the trash icon.
openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME. Every time I try to open up the trash, it gives me an "operation not supported" error, and starting nautilus from the terminal doesn't give me any output. I've tried removing the ~/.local/share/Trash and ~/.nautilus folders for both my main user and root and restarting nautilus, all to no avail.
Also, nothing in nautilus that starts with protocol:// works, like network or burn (or trash).
My only lead so far is that I messed up something in the glib runtime, since I've been working on a project that depends on a lot of GNOME and glib libraries, and have compiled a few from source. But since I can't find any sort of log from nautilus, I have no idea what the cause actually is.
Whenever i try to empty the Trash (As Root) it does so then gives me an error message saying that it can't delete a specific file. It's always the same file and it says:"The file or folder /home/.Trash-0/files/yesterday once more.mp3 does not exist."Having looked in this location logged in as root using both Dolphin and at the command line, this file doesn't exist.
I have some files in my user trash bin which don't get emptied. Can you please tell me where I can find my trash bin using Superuser Dolphin? Or how can I force empty it? I tried /home/.Trash-0/files but it's all empty.
I can't delete any files bigger than 4 Go. I got a message telling me that my trash is full and I should empty it. But there is nothing in it. Is there any thing I can do to be able to delete files over 4 Go?
I have opensuse 11.2 with KDE installed and I changed the default File Manager to Konqueror. I cannot empty the Trash when right clicking on Icon in KDE4. If I try, then I get Icon Settings. Howto switch off these Icon Settings generally?
Does anyone know how to add a fully working (icon changes) Trashcan to the Desktop Folder View?I don't want the plasmoid/widget on the Desktop or on the Task Manager Panel.I can right click -> Create New -> Link to Location(URL), but the icon doesn't change. If the Desktop Folder View is a plasmoid, I guess I'm asking can a plasmoid (trash can) run inside another plasmoid (desktop view) %-)
How can I restore the data inside the trash after make it empty ?I need to restore an important folder from the trash and I can't find it there.I am using openSUSE11.1 (KDE)
Every time I try to empty the waste bin I get dolphin error - 'The file or folder /.local/share/Trash/files/IMGP1676.DNG does not exist'I tried to recreate the file 'IMGP1676.DNG' , deleted it i.e. sent i to the waste bin and then tried the empty waste bin again, although this time it was there and deleted it still reported the same error.du -h .local/share/Trash/files/ 12K .local/share/Trash/files
I have 6 disks (partitions) combined into one lvm volgroup in my server. The server have been online for a year.
And today, suddenly it hangs. At first, I thought it's caused by network lag, because after a couple minutes the server is responsive again. But then I felt something very wrong. I can't access any file that stored on the lvm.
After some dmesg, fdisk -l and a peek at /etc/lvm/archive/*, I found that one of the partitions used for lvm volgroup is missing. Tried a reboot, and the suspected disk is undetected even in BIOS. Must be caused by bad block on the disk's sector zero or something. I think missing one pv makes the volgroup failed to initiate. So, no volgroup, no logical volume. And I can't access the files on it for sure.
Is there a way I can save/rescue data from other non-damaged disks? I have no luck finding similar situation (and solution) by searching on google.
I have a Slackware 12.2 DVD, I was ready to install it when I noticed some scratches on it. I do not know how to install Slack currently, therefore I do not want to mess with the installation. What is the way by which I can be sure that the ISO image in that DVD is intact ?
When the computer starts, you will read a flashing message about S.M.A.R.T and a few other things.I have two hard drives. There is a strange noise from the computer when I run it for more than 3 or 4 hours continuously. I firmly believe one of the hard drives is not working properly. I saw a message about a problem in S.M.A.R.T.It was a flashing message. I couldn't read it. I don't run any Windows on the computer. All are Linux. The default is Mandriva.
How do I read the flashing message you see at the start of a computer? I want to find out the damage one replace it with a new one.
I have setup a local repository containing several .rpm files. I created a comps.xml file outlining the category and groups for the local repository. However, when I issue the yum grouplist command, I get the following error:
Failed to add groups file for repository: localRepo - comps file is empty/damaged
However, if I try to install one of the the packages in the repository, it works just fine.
Here are the steps I took to create the repodata:
The comps.xml and repository are stored in the directory: /var/www/html/myrepo/x86_64 cd /var/www/html/myrepo/x86_64 createrepo -g comps.xml .
I installed postgregresql-8.4 in ubuntu 9.10 some time ago, now I upgraded to 10.04. Everything looked like normal, but when I decided to update my packages via synaptic, postgregresql-8.4 got an error and now it s listed as broken.
I tried to simply uninstall it, but an error appears and says that the package is at a bad state and cannot be uninstalled. How can I uninstall, update or reinstall the package?
How you doing all? I've my Slackware 13 box. Recently, I have upgraded to -current, and while the upgrade I noticed that my connection went down while it was downloading the new kernel. I had doubts that it got damaged.
Code: slackpkg upgrade-all and found every thing is up to date. While upgrading, the system asked me to run lilo, and I did. But after rebooting, I got the (Kernel Panic) error. I logged back in using setup disk, and the chroot to my original system root directory. I removed the current Kernels, and now I need to re-install it.. there I'm stuck. Slackpkg isn't working because the box is not connecting to the internet. or links is more than appreciated since I'm not geek enough to sort it by my own. Also few googling didn't set me up with a solution so far.
My laptop was damaged a couple of months ago. Just a short drop from the couch, but it was hard enough to make the HD inaccessible. I took it to a local, respected shop but they couldn't save any of the data and simply installed a new HD after consulting me.
I have the old drive and would still like to retrieve the data, if the price is right. What should I ask about when looking for another repair shop?
I've been using ubuntu about a year, so I have a fair amount of experience with it. Today I was trying to install ubuntu on my new laptop, which doesn't have an optical drive. I don't have a usb stick, so I attempted to partition my external hard drive. I stupidly clicked "erase disk" on startup disk creator and erased the entire drive instead of the partition. I want to get back the files I had on this external. I searched and managed to find that people had been successful with testdisk. when I choose to analyse, it only finds the partition I created for the live cd.
When I choose advanced, I can find my older partition (FAT32) but when I choose to undelete I get: Code: No file found, filesystem seems damaged.
When I choose boot I get: Code: Boot sector Bad Backup boot sector Bad Sectors are identical.
A valid FAT Boot sector must be present in order to access. Any data; even if the partition is not bootable. I searched but I couldn't find anyone receiving this error message or how to deal with it. So I tried using photorec. Photorec is recovering all of my documents currently but without the filenames and file structure, it's more or less worthless.

I have a HDD with OS Win with three partitions NTFS.I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on new partition, and I left the old partitions on the disk, because there are a lot of my personal data. When I was looking for how to mount partitions on startup, I was fortuitously to Palimpsest Disk Utility selecting the checkbox on sda2 as a boot, and apply. But I saw that it was wrong and took the check back. And after this was damaged NTFS on the partition sda2. Windows shows the partition as RAW.
Yesterday, my windows xp died and I can not do anything with that, but I would like to rescue my important files from hdd before format. I open ubuntu trial version from cd but i can not access my hdd. I find my hdd in system->administration->disk utility but I can not go anywhere from there.
When I solve this problem I would like to try ubuntu as my os but i am worried that some programs may not work on it . Like for example my bamboo tablet, fm2010, adobe ilustrator, autocad.
