Ubuntu :: Hard Drive Recovery - Filesystem Seems Damaged
Sep 8, 2010I've been using ubuntu about a year, so I have a fair amount of experience with it. Today I was trying to install ubuntu on my new laptop, which doesn't have an optical drive. I don't have a usb stick, so I attempted to partition my external hard drive. I stupidly clicked "erase disk" on startup disk creator and erased the entire drive instead of the partition. I want to get back the files I had on this external. I searched and managed to find that people had been successful with testdisk. when I choose to analyse, it only finds the partition I created for the live cd.
When I choose advanced, I can find my older partition (FAT32) but when I choose to undelete I get:

When I choose boot I get:

Sectors are identical.
A valid FAT Boot sector must be present in order to access. Any data; even if the partition is not bootable. I searched but I couldn't find anyone receiving this error message or how to deal with it. So I tried using photorec. Photorec is recovering all of my documents currently but without the filenames and file structure, it's more or less worthless.

Jun 6, 2011I have an Ubuntu server virtual machine running in vmware server on a Win2003 server host. A locked up machine forced a hard reset a couple of days ago and my VM seems to be damaged.At first VMware wouldn't start the VM, complaining of a locked file. I deleted 3 .lckdirectories and was able to start up the VM. I then get a GRUB menu with 6 options - booting any of them other than memtest results in a lone underscore cursor at the upper left corner.me in the right direction as far as the next thing I should try at this point? Unfortunately I had not yet set up a rigorous backup scheme, other than internal daily db/web backups that are stored inside the VM. I have a snapshot from 3 weeks ago but upon loading the snapshot I get the same cursor.

Aug 10, 2011I've been running a dual-boot ubuntu 11.04 64-bit and windows 7 64-bit for a while now, and recently got a new computer. I moved the hard drives to the new computer (one had both os's on it, the other was just a storage drive) and windows 7 would not boot, so I reinstalled it. I used a live cd to repair grub using boot repair /Boot-Repair) and everything looked to be going swell But when I tried to boot I got "invalid or damaged bootable partition" instead of a grub menu. so I went back and, copying and pasting the commands the program gave me, I manually removed and reinstalled grub on my ubuntu partition. same error. so, I backed up all my documents onto a third drive, wiped everything out, and started again. I installed win7 on one drive, and then when that was done, I installed ubuntu on the other. lo and behold when I tried to boot I got the same error message, and now I can't even boot from my windows drive. The ubuntu drive is fairly new and according to disk utility has no errors. Is this some problem with grub or what?

I managed to create an ubuntu bootable usb and followed some tutorials for fixing grub but all i managed to do is to get another error: "Grub error: No such disc". After some experimentation i got

Feb 7, 2010I have been using ubuntu 9.10 for a month. i have it installed on a 5GB separate partition of a 80 GB hard disk with my XP installed on a C drive(a separate partition ofcourse) then i had to remove it from my PC so i boot my PC with a partition manager cd and directly formatted that partition of 5GB from that software now i am having this error on my boot of PC....

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Clean Install Causes Grub Unknown FileSystem
May 7, 2010I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and during the upgrade it asked to install a new version of grub or keep the current one. Thinking that I should just upgrade the grub just to make sure that I had the latest version I decided to do it. So I told it the partitions to use the ubuntu, ubuntu swap, vista, and vista recovery.Finished the upgrade and restarted.I tried to boot into both the vista, and vista recovery but I noticed something weird. Grub switched the names, the actual vista install is called recovery, and when you tried to load it, a blinking cursor would appear for a split second and then loop back to grub. If you tried to select the vista recovery now called vista it would just sit at the blinking cursor for infinity. But booting into ubuntu worked.
So I decided to wipe ubuntu and do a fresh install of 10.04. Went through and set up the swap and ext4 partitions at the end of the hard drive(because I would like to expand the windows directory should I ever be able to boot into it). Now when I start up and select vista recovery now called vista it sits at the blinking cursor just as before.

Oct 16, 2010there was ubuntu on my pc operating system but it is strange for me so i wanted to instal windows 7 on my pc. I inserted Window 7 disk and started to install it and i formated Ubuntu but the disk what i was using was damaged and it could not complite the installation and now i dont have any programs in my pc. Problem is that i got another disk but i cant boot anymore my pc, i select drive and stuff and then comes error.

Nov 17, 2010I had dual boot with windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04 running, and working. In my grub menu on startup I could choose (among things) something called Vista loader. Dont know why, since I installed windows 7 and not vista. Could also choose windows7 and ubuntu, both worked.
Today I accidentally pressed the vista loader, and now I get the following error upon boot: Error unknown filesystem grub rescue
So the next thing I did was download the latest ubuntu and boot from live cd. I followed instructions [url] on how to purge grub2 and reinstall it, and did so with out any problems. However the same error remains when I boot.

I have tried a windows repair disc with no results, it cannot find any problem with the startup routine and I have looked at many different tutorials and information about how to restore grub using command from the grub rescue menu. Ubuntu 10.10

May 2, 2011I tried upgrading to 11.04 this morning and after rebooting grub left me at the grub rescue> prompt with the message 'error: unknown filesystem'. I've tried purging and reinstalling grub using a live-cd but no joy.

May 25, 2011I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04 lts on three of my schools old computers, they are all old Celeron computers, all basically exactly the same, it installed flawlessly on the first one but on the second after restarting after fresh instillation it boots to an error saying "unknown filesystem, grub rescue>" I've reinstalled 3 times, I've looked for others with the same problem but they are all related to dual booting with windows, I wiped windows, there is mow windows involved

May 18, 2011I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:

*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?

I've tried following the direction to restore grub but I'm getting stuck right away on the command to mount my ubuntu partition. After I type "sudo mount /dev/sda4 /mnt", I keep getting the error message "mount: you must specify the filesystem type."

May 23, 2010A friend of mine upgraded his pc to ubuntu 10.04. Sadly enough we ran into issues with his graphics card, which apparently doesnt work well with lucid. We decided to downgrade to 9.10. I did this by installing over the old partition and chose to import the settings from the old account.The problems started when the pc booted for the first time:The list of kernels in grub2 was the one from 10.04.Somehow grub2 from the old installation seems to be still around and messes everything up. Any ideas how I could fix this?

It says in the kernel parameter that it is read only (RO) but still mounts it RW. A remount with mount -o remount,ro does not work, since / is always busy. what to do to get a fsck done? I don't want to boot into a rescue system, this should be possible on a running system (like Windows does it, when rebooting)

Oct 28, 2010I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10--it had Windows 7 on the machine before but wiped that off so it is not dual boot.
The upgrade manager prompted me to install about 170MB or so of upgrades. I chose to install everything and then rebooted. Upon rebooting I received an error (sorry but didn't record it).
I rebooted by ctrl-alt-delete and then got the error: error: unknown filesystem grub rescue.
How do I get back my installation?

Sep 24, 2010A few days ago I decided to try a linux OS for the first time. Following a how-to advice, I created a ~80gb partition (on a 320 gb sata disk) for Win7 and installed it. Then I installed Ubuntu 10.04, chose to make partitions manually, created a primary ext4-partition (right after the one with Win7) for / and a 1024mb swap partition. So now the disk is parted this way: 512 booter - Win7 system, ~ 80gb ntfs - Ubuntu /, 8 gb ext4 - Ubuntu 1 gb swap - file storage, ntfs ~240 gb (created using Win7 bootable disk, but the issue from below started before this).
After the installation the boot loader failed to load any system, giving the error from the topic title. I tried several ways to reinstall/repair/reconfigure grub in the live-CD mode. Some of them didn't change anything, others were not completed because of an update-grub error ("cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?)"). Grub version is 1.98b. The disk with Win7 and Ubuntu is treated as hd0 in grub and sdd in Ubuntu
