OpenSUSE Install :: Suse But Installer Corrupts Screen Graphically And Is Unusable

i've tried both the gnome and kde installers and initially it boots fine to the first menu, but if i then select 'installation' or even try to boot to the live cd, the screen goes blank and then reappears as something that looks like the static on your television if you're trying to tune it in. if you let it continue to boot, then it goes blank again and comes back with a different corrupted screen, but this time you have a white block in the middle that is apparently the mouse point as i can then move it around.
i've tried it in VESA mode and even text mode and the same thing happens. the installation media checks out fine, and my graphics card is brand new - a Radeon 3650 HD. I might try an older version of suse and try and upgrade from there
I have installed Open Suse 11.1 on two different machines. One contains an ATI X850 video card, and the other contains an ATI X1950 video card. I updated the ATI drivers on the 850 card and it works like a dream. I updated the ATI drivers on the 1950 card and Suse becomes unusable. System works fine before the update. Before the update I ran it at a resolution of 1280 x 1024. I thought I would lower it to 1024 x 768 to see if that would help, but it does not. I dual boot with WinXP, and card works fine with that setup at 1280 x 1024, so I would suspect this is a specific problem with my Suse setup as opposed to a Motherboard issue.
I am in possession of a new HP HPE-570f PC which I bought this morning. This has AMD Phenon 1090T and AMD Radeon HD 6770 graphics card. The OEM Windows 7 works fine. When I try to install Suse 11.4 using same DVD that works on my other (older) machine, I see the Suse Installation screen from which I select "installation", then comes the "Loading Linux Kernel" progress bar. As soon as the progress bar gets to the end, the computer reboots! Then of course I end up back at the Installation screen since the DVD is still in the drive.
I hope this is the right forum in which to post this but I am currently running SUSE 11.2(I know im a couple versions back, its a long story but this box has been in storage for awhile) but the problem I am having is with updating SUSE and accessing the repositories through the Yast Software Installer. When I open it I get several variations of this message:
Download failed: File '/repodata/repomd.xml' not found on medium '[URL].. I think this must have something to do with an old repository not being up but im not exactly sure how to fix this.
I am trying to Install Open Suse 11.3 (burned as an ISO DVD) along with existing Win 2008 R2 OS. When I try to boot from the DVD it just logs in to Win2008 though boot from CD/DVD is enabled in the boot sequence. So i tried to mount the ISO and run from Windows ! BUT I get an error before installation starts telling that Win2008 R2 is not supported in open suse installer! Is there anything I can do to overcome this and install/retain both OS? In fact I am even trying to c hange my win2008 from R2 to Enterprise to see if I can overcome the problem!
I have a SONY PCG-R505TE laptop with an external CD/DVD, it connects via what I think is a PCMCIA card, the drive came with the laptop and functions fine. I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.
Using suse 11.3 and kde 4.5 after an updating happen that runlevel 5 is skipped and suse dont start x I think is a kdm problem, becouse if I change kdm in gdm in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager it starts and show me the login window, (but system don't work well)

I have installed openSuse 11.2 in vmware that is a virtual box on win7 ,last time when I logged in I tried to change some desktop effects. I'm installing OpenSuse 11.4 to a HP DL180 G6 server, with no luck. I go through the installation process when booting up from the DVD, and when it finish and restarts in loads Suse and then goes to a black screen and doesn't respond.
I have my brand new Dell latitude e6410 delivered with Windows 7 already installed. I want a dual boot and I decided to try SUSE for the first time. I used the installation DVD, the installation seemed to end up well. The problem is that already at the first reboot, the screen went completely black. By pressing ctrl-alt-del I can reboot the laptop. It seems to me a problem with the graphic card.
My setup is: Dell Latitude e6410 Intel i5 m560 @2.67 GHz nVidia NVS 3100M 4Gb DDR ram Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network connector
If I start in failsafe mode, the X server starts, I have KDE, although with a somewhat sketchy graphic, I can use SUSE almost normally. The main problem in this case being that the system doesn't find any ethernet/wi-fi device, so I cannot connect to the Internet (I'm writing from Win7 right now). I tried choosing the default SUSE boot with the additional boot option "nomodeset" at the grub prompt. This is a suggestion mentioned in another post on this forum, although in that case the problem was coming from a bug dealing with an Intel graphic card. The system goes up but then kde doesn't start. I'm asked to lgin at a prompt. If I try to launch kde from command line (startkde), it complains that the variable $DISPLAY is not setup.
This is where I am now. I'm quite out of ideas, so I want to ask you few things. First stupid question: is the problem coming likely from the drivers of the nvidia graphic card? Second question: in that case, how can I fix it, considering that the linux partition is "isolated"? The fact that in failsafe SUSE doesn't see any network adapter concerns me a bit.
I'm new to linux, and I'm just trying to learn OpenSUSE. I just installed it and I have a few quick questions. #1 I accidentally installed the "OpenSUSE Installer (LOCAL)" on Windows 7, so now I get the option to choose windows or the installer at the windows boot screen. I ended up just installing OpenSUSE on a completely different HD (my original intent) from a burned DVD, so this installer is useless and I don't know how to remove it.
#2 After installing opensuse on my second HD, the boot screen is now SUSE's instead of Windows, and I can choose suse's desktop, the suse failsafe, windows 1, and windows 2. Windows 1 brings me to the windows boot screen with the choice i mentioned above (windows or the local installer i accidentally installed), and windows 2 i assume is my second windows partition which is just my SWAP file, and selecting it does nothing (which would make sense if thats all it is).
My question here is how do I make it so my default boot screen is the windows one with an option between windows 7 or suse? Or would this require reinstalling the system? If it does and its simple enough to explain please do I wouldnt mind removing it and reinstalling at this point, I would just wipe my whole second HD from windows.
#3 I have a netgear adapter. unfortunitly i'm not at home right now and I don't remember the model, so I'll provide that this evening if necessary. What I do know is they do not have a driver for linux. I've found ACX100, but I didn't find my netgear adapter listed on their website. I also found NDISWrapper, but thats for XP and I still don't know if that'll work. I will of course try both unless someone here has a better solution. If anyone knows anything that will work on any netgear adapter for linux please let me know, if not then I'll provide the model later on.
I have a problem after running zypper up. Apparantly somehow it upgraded to current factory release.. Problems so farNo networkNo x - session(after a quick hack i have x started but no input devices work)I think there is something wrong with udev and my xorg.confx first complained about InputDevice not being recognised.. I moved away my /etc/X11/xorg.conf and got a quick running session (without input devices, so icannot log on) but after a reboot it gives me a "black" screenWhile troubleshooting is encountered the problem that my network card is not recognised.. This all points in the direction of udev or whatever to be badly configured during upgrade..
I convinced my sister into trying linux instead of windows. When she agreed, I messed things up for her in the install and now her files are gone. I was trying to install Kubuntu. I had backed up all of the data into one partition (hda7 ... which is the last partition) and restructured the other partitions. When applying changes, it crashed in the middle so I had to start again and redo things.
Finally when everything was installed, I tried mounting the NTFS hda7 partition but to no success. Upon checking in fdisk, it was listed as ext3 but even could not mount it with ext3. I checked in windows and the partition is marked as "unknown". what has changed is that instead of hda7 being logical, it is now marked as primary. I have checked testdisk and I am not able to recover any files from it. Any ideas?
1. Testdisk ... did not find any files from that partition 2. Partition magic ... got some messages that something wrong with the partition table, it fixed that, but get Error 17 and partition magic cannot start 3. chkdsk ... did not find anything
I read something about DD but I have never tried it and I am worried I might mess up things.
I have a laptop of which a large part of the screen is broken (shows garbage). Fortunately the broken area is a clean rectangle, the bottom 1/3 of the screen or so.
The laptop is running Ubuntu 8.04, but I plan to reinstall it with 10.10. The graphics are provided by an Intel 915GM or something in that direction.
Knowing this, do you know of a way to tell the system about the broken part of the screen, so it will simply not use it? I don't really care whether it's done at the hardware, X or window manager level, though as low as possible is preferred.

The screen resolution looked very good with all screen resolutions working well The colours and fonts very clear. All other device drivers worked 100%. But unfortunately the display flashes about every 10 seconds and the partial beak up of the display only lasts a fraction of a second and very distracting and is unusable. Testing with Ubuntu 10.10 live DVD. With this months Linux Format Magazine also exhibits this problem. However deleting the partition and installing Ubuntu 10.04 Beta1 DVD -386. And all updates downloaded. Works 100% with no screen flicker.
is there anyway that i can install my reliance netconnect lxu800 modem graphically(GUI). i am not well versed with command line interface. i just downloaded ubuntu desktop version and installed it alongside windows vista.
I am currently installing 11.2 on a new 1TB hdd.the opensuse installer does not allow me to create a / partition (ext4) >20GB. Does anyone know why and how I can get around this limitation?
I attempted to install the mesa-dri-drivers-experimental package and my screen became unusable when I enabled desktop effects. I then uninstalled mesa-dri-drivers-experimental and tried to install the akmod before realizing that my card isn't supported yet. Now I can't seem to do anyting to get my screen back. I removed the blacklist on nouveau, but my screen still goes black after fedora boots. Is there any way I can just get things back to default without reinstalling the whole system?
I am trying to install opensuse 11.3 but the PC restarts itself before loading the installer dvd. When I run the installer dvd from 11.2 i can see all the files there, i click on auto run and it gives me an error msg saying cannot find autorun program also have a live gnome desktop cd and same problem, cant boot install media. This were both created on opensuse 11.2 using k3b for the first one and brasero for the second one. I have put both on an xp laptop and the installers start with no problem, both media check are fine, no error. On top of that I have some ubuntu dvd and some xp dvd, I have tried both on my pc and they boot fine, so its not a boot problem,
this ones were created on this same pc before I had opensuse, seems only cd or dvd created in opensuse fail, but it only fails when booting on my opensuse pc and work fine when I put them into xp laptop. I have been trying all day and I cant find any info on this problem. The only thing I can think of, that I have not tried is to try to burn a dvd using xp and try that one.
I just installed Suse 11.3 64bit on a new build. My video card is a nvidia gt240. I am using the default drivers. My monitor is a NEC 17" LCD.
When I boot up the screen resolution defaults to 1280x1024. I can go to applications>configure desktop>display and set it to 1024x768, which is my resolution of choice, and it works until I reboot or log out and log back in, then it resets to 1280x1024.
I would like to make 1024x768 the default so I don't have to keep changing it. Is there a way to do this? The output of xrandr looks like this:

I started the openSUSE installer from Windows, but I do not want to install SUSE. How do I get back to Vista?Every time I get 'Booting OpenSUSE installer 11.2 (LOCAL)' and it prompts for the SUSE DVD. I tried inserting the DVD and selecting 'Abort' on the first opportunity but I never get to return to Windows
I tried to install suse 11.4 from live usb when it was installing, it said at one point that there is 0 b available on my disk. It's impossible because I had a partition with 15 GB of space devoted to this installation. My hard drive is 300GB,100mb for system reserved, about 50 + 214 for windows and the fourth partition is extended 35 GB. The extended 35 has 20 GB for FAT 32 and then 15 GB for the suse. And it said there is no room. pressed explore or something from the error message and then the whole computer froze. I had to reboot and the grub was ofc fcked up, nice. So, atm I am running from another live cd. When I tried to boot the openSUSE live usb the usb was ruined.. I don't know what had happened but it tried to load the live usb, it had it's cameleon ture and then error messages that said something about the usb being read only. So, do you have any ideas what might have happened, why did it say there is no room when there clearly was?

I have tried the 4.7 GB DVD image, and the KDE Live CD, and both shows this. Also i tried UNetBootIn (is that what it's called?) and it's the same too.
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop and encountered several issues.
1. The Synaptics touchpad is nearly unusable. It is impossible to drag while holding down a button. The cursor will move randomly across the screen instead. It is impossible to right click; a right click is treated like a left click. Double-tapping the dot in the corner does not disable the touchpad.
2. Attempting to change the brightness will kill the screen. The computer is still functioning, and it is possible to perform tasks "blind." Only the screen becomes completely blank.
3. Ubuntu does not always boot up reliably. When it does not, the screen is blank but the computer is otherwise responding.
4. The screen is black after suspend.
5. The computer will sometimes hang when shutting down (showing desktop background). Possibly related messages in dmesg:
I have installed many Linux distributions, but I have never tried openSUSE! So I thought it must be time to try it. I pop the dvd in(I checked the md5 of the iso and checked on the bootable disk) and when I go to install it pauses on the "Probe hard disks"Things I have done:

I have 2 physical 500 GB Sata drives/stripes that appear as 1000 GB C: drive under WinXP. I have partitioned that drive into 750 GB Windows native C: and an empty 250 GB partition F: When running the installer for OpenSuse 11.2 only the physical drives appear in the list of available hard drives 2x 500 GB (= sda and sdb), rather then the partitions of 750 and 250 GB (would expect sda1 and sda2). Is it possible to install Opensuse on the 250 GB partition (F: under windows) without destroying the WinXP installation and data on the C: partition?
I am installing openSUSE 11.4 on a Dell D620 on which I used to have Ubuntu/XP dual boot. I don't want Windows at all anymore and on the new openSUSE install I just want swap, root, and home partitions.The installation goes fine, but it says my drive is 465 GB not 500, I think what is not showing is my old Windows System partition. I can't see away from within openSUSE to increase the size of my home partition after the install either.With my limited linux skills I think the simplest solution would be to just format the whole drive then install openSUSE. I tried to do that with some XP CDs, but none of them will boot, they keep listing various errors. I tried putting the drive in an external holder to plug it into another computer and format it just using windows, but windows won't recognize it.Using some free live cd/USB I don't know about Using some setting in the openSUSE installation menus I don't know aboutUsing windows or a windows CD (I can post the boot errors if needed)
I'm using a Gateway LT3103u running a dual boot of Win 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 (separate partitions) and ever since I've started using Ubuntu (last October) I've had persistent graphic card problems.
My graphics card is the ATI Radeon X1270.
Right now I can't use any visual effects because of I do the screen spazzes out and becomes unusable. This isn't a big deal for me since I don't use them but I figured it's relevant to the problem.
Even with visual effects off I still have problems and at times parts of the menu will stay on the screen in a little box which covers any windows that open beneath it. The only way to get rid of it is to turn visual effects on so the screen resets then hit use previous settings.
