I have installed many Linux distributions, but I have never tried openSUSE! So I thought it must be time to try it. I pop the dvd in(I checked the md5 of the iso and checked on the bootable disk) and when I go to install it pauses on the "Probe hard disks"Things I have done:
- Re-checking the integrity of the disk and iso.
- Tried booting with the safe kernel.
- Tried leaving it for ages

I am trying to install Fedora Core 10 64bit on my Desktop... i've been running FC7 on it until now.The installer continues until the Anaconda GUI, and I am able to click next on language select, then when I click to select "U. S. English" as the keyboard layout and press NEXT, the installer hangs. System boots up to loading NVIDIA drivers, it shows mouse pointer then it hangs up!
This happened after brutal force rebooting, because system did not responded properly (especially Nautilus). Probable cause:
forget to unmount.cifs a windows shared folder in the network (mounted with mount.cifs). It happened to me already sometimes (to forget umount.cifs), but never ending with this permaenent hanging up)
-tried automatic system repair with suse boot DVD. It repaired something + changed the bootloader. Problem still there
-rebooted--> system hanging up after NVIDIA drivers. code...
I have been trying and failing to install openSUSE 11.3 for the last couple of days to replace my Ubuntu install.
I have downloaded the openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso (have downloaded numerous times in case it was a problem with the mirror I used) and done the standard dd stuff, as well as trying it from my windows partition with the ImageWriter app.
When I try and boot with the USB drive plugged in my system hangs at the boot screen and the usb drive starts flashing as if it is being read, this continues indefinitely and never goes beyond the boot screen and i eventually take the usb drive out and restart.
When plugging the drive in when Im in ubuntu it shows up as "openSUSE Live CD GNOME" and all the files seem to be there. In gparted it doesn't recognise the partitions or anything but I presume this is normal... Also reduces the size of my drive to the size of the Live CD but again I presume this is normal...
I have also tried installing using the NET iso however I have exactly the same outcome.
This laptop is a Acer Travelmate 8371 and has had Ubuntu, Mint, and Windows 7 all installed from the same USB drive. There is not optical drive so I have no other ways to install openSUSE.
I am running 11.3 for about 4 months and it suddenly started to hang intermittently, sometimes many times a day. Once KDE restarted and other times the screen went black. Most of the time it was just hanging and I needed to force a shutdown. The only clue I got is KDE displayed a notification saying "Disabling IRQ #24" not long after it started to go nuts.
After searching around, I figured the problem was with my external video card so I pulled it out 2 days ago and so far it didn't freeze again. After searching around some more, I found many users fixed very similar issues by upgrading to kernel 2.6.35 and I am ready to go for this solution. But now, I couldn't find out how to upgrade the kernel. People said it can be done in Yast but I only see version 2.6.34. What is the easiest way to upgrade?
i have hd encryption activated on my swap and home disks. now every 20 min or so (not really periodic but definetly reproduceable) my system hangs completely for about 4 - 10 sec while the hd led is on. i have a dual core cpu which makes this even more odd. could this be a side effect of hd encryption especially on the swap partition?

View 9 Replies View RelatedNew Intel x64 system installed with Opensuse 11.1 (like the KDE 3.5 option) and has been running well until today. Booting stops at "starting jexec services". Even while booting under "failsafe" system halts at "starting jexec services". Unable to boot to command prompt to attempt repair. Ran "repair" option from install disc with no good results. Still will not boot past jexec services.
View 2 Replies View RelatedEvery time I boot up OpenSUSE 11.3 it hangs at the same "position" for approximately 3 minutes and then continues to boot. Unfortunately I see no corresponding error log e.g. in dmesg output. Hence, I don't know what is the reason for that. Here is my dmesg output. The delay occurs at 20 seconds after beginning of boot process (line 1085). I also analyzed the boot process with bootchart.
My computer: Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad R400.
By trying to install opensuse 11.4 / 1 the installation hungsup at a late level. After rebooting the system, the configuration goes on. When finishing the installation on that way, there are no menus so you can to simply nothing. The problem of system hanging exists also with version 11.3 final release but after rebooting the configuration goes on and when finished, you have the menus.

After reading this thread: Hangs at end of SuSe 11 install I used acpi=off apm=off nolapci as the install options and it worked. My question is, do I need to add those options to the /grub/menu.lst or will the install do that?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 on a completely blank machine, empty disks, etc. using a Network Install. The install appeared to run OK, but when it rebooted to do the configuration, it hung. I tried a manual reboot a couple of times, then booted in FailSafe mode - came up OK and ran through the auto-config. Now, it still boots up ok in FailSafe, but in normal mode I get the wallpaper on the screen, but it hangs there.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and made created a DVD. When I started installing it, I'm not able to do it. I think its hanging. This is what happening: First I found a screen saying 'ubuntu 10.10' and it loaded for some time then I got a screen with a black color task bar at the top of the screen, then after some time it turned into white color and after some time it disappeared. Nothing else happened. I didn't find any pop-up window to start installation of OS..
But when I tried this in my friends house, I found that instead of 'ubuntu 10.10' there came 'Ubuntu' LOGO and it was little bit slow but a pop-up window opened to start installation..

I have a SONY PCG-R505TE laptop with an external CD/DVD, it connects via what I think is a PCMCIA card, the drive came with the laptop and functions fine. I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.

When I run the installer dvd from 11.2 i can see all the files there, i click on auto run and it gives me an error msg saying cannot find autorun program also have a live gnome desktop cd and same problem, cant boot install media. This were both created on opensuse 11.2 using k3b for the first one and brasero for the second one. I have put both on an xp laptop and the installers start with no problem, both media check are fine, no error. On top of that I have some ubuntu dvd and some xp dvd, I have tried both on my pc and they boot fine, so its not a boot problem,
this ones were created on this same pc before I had opensuse, seems only cd or dvd created in opensuse fail, but it only fails when booting on my opensuse pc and work fine when I put them into xp laptop. I have been trying all day and I cant find any info on this problem. The only thing I can think of, that I have not tried is to try to burn a dvd using xp and try that one.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried to install suse 11.4 from live usb when it was installing, it said at one point that there is 0 b available on my disk. It's impossible because I had a partition with 15 GB of space devoted to this installation. My hard drive is 300GB,100mb for system reserved, about 50 + 214 for windows and the fourth partition is extended 35 GB. The extended 35 has 20 GB for FAT 32 and then 15 GB for the suse. And it said there is no room. pressed explore or something from the error message and then the whole computer froze. I had to reboot and the grub was ofc fcked up, nice. So, atm I am running from another live cd. When I tried to boot the openSUSE live usb the usb was ruined.. I don't know what had happened but it tried to load the live usb, it had it's cameleon ture and then error messages that said something about the usb being read only. So, do you have any ideas what might have happened, why did it say there is no room when there clearly was?

I have tried the 4.7 GB DVD image, and the KDE Live CD, and both shows this. Also i tried UNetBootIn (is that what it's called?) and it's the same too.
I have 2 physical 500 GB Sata drives/stripes that appear as 1000 GB C: drive under WinXP. I have partitioned that drive into 750 GB Windows native C: and an empty 250 GB partition F:
When running the installer for OpenSuse 11.2 only the physical drives appear in the list of available hard drives 2x 500 GB (= sda and sdb), rather then the partitions of 750 and 250 GB (would expect sda1 and sda2). Is it possible to install Opensuse on the 250 GB partition (F: under windows) without destroying the WinXP installation and data on the C: partition?
I am installing openSUSE 11.4 on a Dell D620 on which I used to have Ubuntu/XP dual boot. I don't want Windows at all anymore and on the new openSUSE install I just want swap, root, and home partitions.The installation goes fine, but it says my drive is 465 GB not 500, I think what is not showing is my old Windows System partition. I can't see away from within openSUSE to increase the size of my home partition after the install either.With my limited linux skills I think the simplest solution would be to just format the whole drive then install openSUSE. I am in possession of a new HP HPE-570f PC which I bought this morning. This has AMD Phenon 1090T and AMD Radeon HD 6770 graphics card. The OEM Windows 7 works fine. When I try to install Suse 11.4 using same DVD that works on my other (older) machine, I see the Suse Installation screen from which I select "installation", then comes the "Loading Linux Kernel" progress bar. As soon as the progress bar gets to the end, the computer reboots! Then of course I end up back at the Installation screen since the DVD is still in the drive.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI was messing around couple linux distros and a desktop earlier today. When I booted from the Ubuntu disk, it seemed to take like 2-5 minutes on each screen. So was basically taking like 10 minutes before I even got to the disk's menu. When i booted the machine off of openSUSE 11.2 disk it booted nice and fast, then installed without a hitch.When i put the Ubuntu disk into my laptop it booted fast and fine there.I'm just curious if anyone has any ideas why that desktop would seem to disagree with a bootable Ubuntu disk like that. Those things are obviously designed to work with near anything. It's a standard IDE CD-ROM, 7600GT, IDE hard drive, all pretty standard stuff.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI tried to install 11.3 today but no luck so far. I installed it 3 times from GNOME liveCD and once from a LiveUSB both didn't work. With the CD, it restarts before installing initrd, GRUB tells me :
error 15 : file not found.
I verified both the image I downloaded via md5 and the CD I made and they both are OK.
