OpenSUSE Install :: Re-Installation/Start Over Again?

Nov 27, 2010

if the answer to this is glaringly obvious/is written in windows terminology or mentioned elsewhere but searching has got me nowhere. I don't know what I did to the installation, but I'll be honest I added repositories when amarok said I needed files to enable mp3 capability. Don't ask me how because I can't remember, it seemed to take forever and now nothing seems to work properly amarok won't even work.

What I want to do is just reinstall or use some sort system restore. Is ther an easy way of doing it?

OpenSUSE Install :: When Try To Install 11.2 Do All The Necessary Steps But The Installation Won't Start?

Mar 16, 2010

when i try to install opensuse 11.2 i do all the necessary steps but the installation won't start..i installed and used opensuse before im not clueless...before i reformatted my drive i was using windows 7,ubuntu and opensuse together.harddrive (160 gb) is sufficient and the installation was going smooth..i added kde and xfce from the software selection and enabled mbr and boot from /partition...Actually i tried all the alternatives (disabled mbr and /boot,enabled mbr and disabled /partition) but nothing changes..when the installation starts it says ''preparing the disks''but after waiting for 5 minutes and seeing nothing is changed i reboot and take the disk out of disk tray..where am i doing wrong and what i did wrong this time instead of last time that prevented the installation ...i thought my cd went corrupted so i downloaded and burned a new dvd from iso image.

OpenSUSE Install :: New Installation For Dual Boot Won't Start

Aug 20, 2010

I have just installed OPENSUSE 11.3 from a CD to a computer running WIN XP. The installation completed and I got to a desktop. I then shut down. When I restarted the computer with the installation CD removed from the drive, I got the message "missing operating system". I ran the installation again, and have left it running. As near as I can tell, the WIN Partition is still intact, but I'm afraid to shut it down for fear I once again will not be able to access either system.

Of course I denied and stopped this installation, but now when starting my computer, the boot menu gives Vista, Ubuntu and Suse as a choice, but if I choose Vista, the Suse installation process is starting instead of Windows, there is no way to get Windows started (fortunately Ubuntu is working so that I can write this message). How can I get Windows starting?

OpenSUSE Install :: KDE Too Slow On Start Up. OpenSUSE-WindowsXP Dual Boot?

Jul 18, 2011

I have an 1TB hard drive, half of it for Windows XP SP3, another half for OpenSUSE 11.4. After installing OpenSUSE, it didn't take me much time to notice that there was something wrong with KDE: sometimes it loaded quite fast, as expected, but most of the time I'd have to wait around 1 minute in that loading screen. Then I updated the kernel, as well as KDE itself, but that didn't solve the problem.

After that I tried to start the system using Enlightnment, and it was lightning fast compared to KDE, however, I didn't quite like its interface, and for some reason GNOME refused to start. All that was too frustrating to me, so I gave up and have been using Windows for the last few weeks. Got sick of it now and here I am on OpenSUSE again. Oh, it feels sooo much better! BUT, I'm still with the same problem.

My specs are as follow:
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H (with updated BIOS, version F11)
Processor: AMD Phenom X3 8450
Memory: 2GB
Videocard: Nvidia Geforce 8500GT (using NVIDIA proprietary drivers)
OpenSUSE 11.4
KDE 4.6.0
Did I forget anything important?

Ps.: I didn't have these problems with Mandriva 2010.2, which, if I'm correct, used the same KDE version.

OpenSUSE Install :: Update Start But Would Stop Right In The Middle And Refuse To Install Pulseaudio(...) Package

Jun 18, 2010

I have just visited this page here, Updating openSUSE - openSUSE I have been trying to update my OpenSuSE system for a week now and I have absolutely no idea what causes this problem. The update would start but would stop right in the middle and refuse to install some pulseaudio(...) package... It would indicate that network is down while I am sure it is up.

I am behind a proxy and I have again and again made sure that the proxy settings are correct and alright. Since it downloads some of the packages in the start I believe my connection and settings are OK. Maybe the SuSE server is down, but not for a whole week, I don't think so. I would also like to mention that I have only tried updating through YaST GUI and I am, as of yet, unaware of any console or command-line methods of updating.

I really would like to update my system because I happen to be paranoid in matters of computer security. (Just kidding) But since I cannot install any updates it should mean I might have problem installing new software. So my digital life is literally crippled because of this problem.

OpenSUSE Install :: Fresh Install Of 11.3 Won't Start

Aug 20, 2010

I downloaded the iso from the webpage and used the live cd option. From there I chose install and proceeded to install the OS. Everything went fine and I got a message that the system would need to restart without the live cd. I saw the chameleon with the white growing line under (which seemed to run to it's completion) and then I came to a screen mostly white with three option buttons in the bottom right corner and my mouse with the waiting symbol spinning in the middle of the screen. Basicly the symbols stops spinning after a little while and the system hangs. I have tried starting in fail safe mode and run level 3 with the same result. My laptop is a MSI GX740

Edit: I have tried both ubuntu and mint earlier today and those Live CDs wouldn't even start. Also I am using the CD size Gnome ISO. Maybe some of the content on the dvd iso would provide support for my HW?

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Get X To Start In 11.2

Jun 11, 2010

My videocard, a Radeon HD2900GT from Sapphire has some kind of legendary hate with a new-ish version of Xorg. If I install 11.1, it works fine until I get it to update (haven't gone as far as installing it and stepping versions manually... yet). SuSE 11.2 had never even gotten past installation for me. Having recovered my tower after quite a while away, I decided to regain my linux legs as well. SuSe, as usual didn't work. I ran to Fedora 13 and got it to work, albeit with no support for 3D acceleration. Troubleshooting there, though served as a means of reacquainting myself with the console, X, and linux as a whole. But since Fedora never managed to satisfy me as a distro, I decided to come back to SuSE and use my recently acquired tricks to try and get SuSE to at least install and boot. With the plan being to try and install flgrx once I get the chance. After a lot of trying I managed to shut down X at installation by not installing xorg-x11-driver-video and xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd. This forced the configuration part of the installation to run in text mode, allowing me to get into a text system. Within that I tried then Zypping those packages back in and seeing if I could get X to start. Then started the strange part. SuSE never had an xorg.conf, so I generated one with (#) "Xorg-configure". I then went into the generated file, but even if I change my vga driver to "vesa" withing that one, "Xorg -config /root/xorg.conf.new" will not get X to start.

OpenSUSE Install :: Gdm Won't Start Version 11.0 ?

Dec 27, 2009

The system is:
64bit installation
4 core single processor

And "cat /proc/version" gives: Linux version 2.6.25.20-0.5-default (geeko@buildhost) (gcc version 4.3.1 20080507 (prerelease) [gcc-4_3-branch revision 135036] (SUSE Linux) ) #1 SMP 2009-08-14 01:48:11 +0200

In an effort to solve a problem I was letting openSuSE upgrade as much as I could and then all of a sudden gdm wouldn't start.

I've found some problems but I have no idea how to fix them, remember I have no graphical interface. zypper does work and I was looking for a way to downgrade something figuring that just reversing one of my upgrades should do it.

If anyone could give me some steps for getting out of this mess I would appreciate it. Also, if it is possible to just install the new openSuSE 11.2 without losing all my custom settings I would be happy to take that as a solution.

In any case, here is the info I have so far on the problem:

- I get this error over and over in the command screen:

Any this command that I found in the post: ldd -r /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0

Gave me the long output at the bottom of this.

OpenSUSE Install :: Shut Down Then Start Without Having To Log In?

Mar 18, 2011

I powered up and saw to my consternation that several Firefox Tabs did not load (server unavailable). I gave it several tries, but it did not work. Hiding Firefox, I saw that KWallet was waiting for a password. After that, I entered the password for SU, and Firefox worked. Then it struck me:

I did not login - repeat: I DID NOT LOGIN - , no username, no password. And the password for KWallet is not the same as my user PW.

If I am correct, openSuSE 11.4 (64 bits) may have security problem. Do: Start Firefox 4.0 Beta 12 Start some application that needs a password stored in KWallet, do not enter the PW Place the Firefox window over the KWallet wind for the PW Do a shutdown via the Icon Wait 30 seconds after power down Turn the power on

If you now enter the session without specifying any user name or PW, then this message has some merit; if not, I will try to duplicate the issue tomorrow.

OpenSUSE Install :: Could Not Start KVMSERVER

Apr 17, 2011

I just installed Open Suse, after i tried the live boot version that I received with a mag in DEC 2010.I was very impressed with the Live Boot version as it picked up my sound and other components really well, which is something some of the other distros have not done. However after installing to my hdd I followed all the instructions, remove DVD and restart, this went well and the system restarted so I let it complete the setup process unattended. When I came back and selected menu items I got error messages saying that some components were missing. So I thought OK maybe a rebbot is required so that the install could be reconfigured properly. However when I got to the login screen, i kept getting "Could not start KVMSERVER" messages. If only the installed version lived up to the standard of the Live version life would be great.

OpenSUSE Install :: KDE Won't Start Anymore?

May 9, 2011

since about a week I got a serious Problem on my Multimedia Homeserver. It firstly happened after doing normal updates with 'zypper dup'. Starting the Machine xdm starts up normally, but after logging in KDE (4.6.0, OpenSUSE 11.4 64Bit) shows its progress bar and finally ends up hanging at about 80% completion. Repos are the original distro repos (except nvidia, packman and VLC Repos) for stability reasons - this means no KDE-factory or Tumbleweed repo is activated here. Icewm starts fine so I can use Xine but I'd like to get KDE back running again for using amarok and others. Here is what I tried so far:

tried another user - same result
tried root-user - same result
renamed ~/.kde4 - same result
