when I enter username and password for the login and press Enter, the screen become dark and it redirect me at the login window! But, if I login with root credentials, I have not problems!!
View 9 RepliesI am using opensuse 11.3. I am encountering a problem while trying to log in. The problem message was
"could not start kdeinit4. Check your installation"
I tried to solve this problem by following the instructions given in OpenSuSE 11.0 Could not start kdeinit4... i.e., I opened yast2 and then I had to select "software management" from there in order to update all the packages in kde4. But I got another error when I clicked it.
/usr/lib/YaST2/bin/y2base:/usr/local/lib/libstdc++.so.6: no version information available (required by /usr/lib/YaST2/plugin/libpy2wfm.so.2)
The error list continues. I cannot type whole error list ending with similar wordings as above as am using different computer. I tried to solve this one too by following the instructions in Relocation Error but I could not understand its line "...fixed the problem by taking /usr/local/lib out of ld.so.conf, and then running ldconfig" as am new to linux.
It happens like 50% of my Suse 11.2 startups, when I type in my password at login screen and hit enter, Gnome do not start, i can only see the green blank screen,or sometimes it start to show only my custom wallpaper and nothing more, when i try ctrl+alt+backspacex2 and login again everything seems to work fine, but what could be wrong ? is it a hardware issue ? Moreover, sometimes when I want to shutdown my laptop and click the shutdown button, suse do logout, but instead of turning off the laptop , it brings me to login screen, clicking the shutdown button at login screen makes my hdd lamp blink and thats all.

When i enable SELinux with YAST and then reboot the machine After rebooting everything goes ok ... but when the X login screen appears and i put my login, KDE or the X-Window manager system shows me a message similar to this: "Could not start D-BUS... " etc... and a button "Okey" ... then I pressed the button and the system goes back to the X Login Again ...

View 9 Replies View RelatedSomehow an app on this box seems to have disappeared long ago which was configured to start immediatedly with a root login (eg su). Now, whenever upgrading permissions to root or logging (and assuming login as root), an error displays saying "cannot find <application>"
Considering root usually is different than other logins, am not sure where to start looking on an OpenSuSE box. I've tried without success
BASH -v to enable verbose mode before executing a "su."
BASH --debugger to enable debugging mode before executing a "su."
Logout, Login as root and inspect /var/log/ hoping to find some logfile that audits the login sequence, but may be looking at a wrong logfile.
How can i change the login sound at the start of KDE?

been using 11.2 with KDE on a Sony laptop since 11.2 was released always ran perfect suddenly I can't login, I get to the login screen type in password it begins to load my desktop, then fails and dumps me back to the login screen I can login as root, all my stuff is there (under /home/me) I tried changing my password, no luck I went to run level 3 and there I can login just fine seems to be something with my KDE profile
any ideas where I might find some error messages telling me what's going on?

i am having a boot problem with opensuse.i installed a theme named suse-elegant under personal settings(configure desktop)-system administration-login screen.
i had also added vbox users(i ticked vboxusers) under yast-security and users-user and group management-edit-details to make virtual box work.
i want to check that installed theme so i restarted my laptop.after the restart opensuse taking too long time to boot
note:the login theme also not working.

when I get into the login page, I can only see the background and the login box in the middle of the page just turns whole white and keeps flashing. no response for any clicks. I was force to ctrl+alt+F1 to switch to init 1 to do my work. But I still want to use my graphical desktop either KDE or Gnome is ok. I am using gnome.

View 10 Replies View RelatedThe graphical login screen is loaded just fine. Though very shortly after (a moment after the loading screen could be seen) it crashes back to the graphical login. And that happens no matter what wm I'm trying - gnome, kde3, kde4, e16, e17, even twm.
It happened after the logout after a zypper up yesterday morning. Looking through the list of what packages were upgraded (two machines, both last zypper up'ed last Sunday, checked on the second one after the problem with the first one), the only packages which might be responsible are kwin or qt4.
The graphics card seems to be fine (NVidia 9600), as it happens whether or not I use nv or the propietary driver. Also tried reinstalling it from the repo as well as using the binary blob from NVidia. Has been tested on Windows and games are running fine there, so it shouldn't be the card.
What is strange, is that when calling upon sax2 -r from runlevel three, the initial screen loads nicely, but sax2 crashes back to the cli once one presses 'Change Configuration'. No error messages are being printed.
Any pointers on how I can narrow down the cause (and get it fixed)?

View 9 Replies View RelatedGot it on a CD and was using it as "Try Ubuntu" instead of installing it for good (I still wanted to see if there were memory issues or HDD issues with my desktop, before I installed it for good).Anyway, I would shut down the pc after about 2 or 3 days and redo the CD install (try ubuntu option) again and add all the plugins etc.Kids used this for playing some games on friv or nickjr.The real issue - of late, when I try to start the PC and boot from the CD, I am getting a LOGIN screen instead of the regular option to install from CD or Try the Ubuntu.

I have an 1TB hard drive, half of it for Windows XP SP3, another half for OpenSUSE 11.4. After installing OpenSUSE, it didn't take me much time to notice that there was something wrong with KDE: sometimes it loaded quite fast, as expected, but most of the time I'd have to wait around 1 minute in that loading screen. Then I updated the kernel, as well as KDE itself, but that didn't solve the problem.
After that I tried to start the system using Enlightnment, and it was lightning fast compared to KDE, however, I didn't quite like its interface, and for some reason GNOME refused to start. All that was too frustrating to me, so I gave up and have been using Windows for the last few weeks. Got sick of it now and here I am on OpenSUSE again. Oh, it feels sooo much better! BUT, I'm still with the same problem.
My specs are as follow:
Motherboard: Gigabyte MA78GM-S2H (with updated BIOS, version F11)
Processor: AMD Phenom X3 8450
Memory: 2GB
Videocard: Nvidia Geforce 8500GT (using NVIDIA proprietary drivers)
OpenSUSE 11.4
KDE 4.6.0
Did I forget anything important?
Ps.: I didn't have these problems with Mandriva 2010.2, which, if I'm correct, used the same KDE version.
I have just visited this page here, Updating openSUSE - openSUSE I have been trying to update my OpenSuSE system for a week now and I have absolutely no idea what causes this problem. The update would start but would stop right in the middle and refuse to install some pulseaudio(...) package... It would indicate that network is down while I am sure it is up.
I am behind a proxy and I have again and again made sure that the proxy settings are correct and alright. Since it downloads some of the packages in the start I believe my connection and settings are OK. Maybe the SuSE server is down, but not for a whole week, I don't think so. I would also like to mention that I have only tried updating through YaST GUI and I am, as of yet, unaware of any console or command-line methods of updating.
I really would like to update my system because I happen to be paranoid in matters of computer security. (Just kidding) But since I cannot install any updates it should mean I might have problem installing new software. So my digital life is literally crippled because of this problem.
I have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:

/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?

After the install on every first login the pointer works but not the buttons. If I restart the gui and try to login into gnome again then all works agin. View 5 Replies View Relatedwhen i try to install opensuse 11.2 i do all the necessary steps but the installation won't start..i installed and used opensuse before im not clueless...before i reformatted my drive i was using windows 7,ubuntu and opensuse together.harddrive (160 gb) is sufficient and the installation was going smooth..i added kde and xfce from the software selection and enabled mbr and boot from /partition...Actually i tried all the alternatives (disabled mbr and /boot,enabled mbr and disabled /partition) but nothing changes..when the installation starts it says ''preparing the disks''but after waiting for 5 minutes and seeing nothing is changed i reboot and take the disk out of disk tray..where am i doing wrong and what i did wrong this time instead of last time that prevented the installation ...i thought my cd went corrupted so i downloaded and burned a new dvd from iso image.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded the iso from the webpage and used the live cd option. From there I chose install and proceeded to install the OS. Everything went fine and I got a message that the system would need to restart without the live cd. I saw the chameleon with the white growing line under (which seemed to run to it's completion) and then I came to a screen mostly white with three option buttons in the bottom right corner and my mouse with the waiting symbol spinning in the middle of the screen. Basicly the symbols stops spinning after a little while and the system hangs. I have tried starting in fail safe mode and run level 3 with the same result. My laptop is a MSI GX740
Edit: I have tried both ubuntu and mint earlier today and those Live CDs wouldn't even start. Also I am using the CD size Gnome ISO. Maybe some of the content on the dvd iso would provide support for my HW?
My videocard, a Radeon HD2900GT from Sapphire has some kind of legendary hate with a new-ish version of Xorg. If I install 11.1, it works fine until I get it to update (haven't gone as far as installing it and stepping versions manually... yet). SuSE 11.2 had never even gotten past installation for me. Having recovered my tower after quite a while away, I decided to regain my linux legs as well. SuSe, as usual didn't work. I ran to Fedora 13 and got it to work, albeit with no support for 3D acceleration. Troubleshooting there, though served as a means of reacquainting myself with the console, X, and linux as a whole. But since Fedora never managed to satisfy me as a distro, I decided to come back to SuSE and use my recently acquired tricks to try and get SuSE to at least install and boot. With the plan being to try and install flgrx once I get the chance. After a lot of trying I managed to shut down X at installation by not installing xorg-x11-driver-video and xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd. This forced the configuration part of the installation to run in text mode, allowing me to get into a text system. Within that I tried then Zypping those packages back in and seeing if I could get X to start. Then started the strange part. SuSE never had an xorg.conf, so I generated one with (#) "Xorg-configure". I then went into the generated file, but even if I change my vga driver to "vesa" withing that one, "Xorg -config /root/xorg.conf.new" will not get X to start.
