I have Linux mint 8 iso and would like to install it on an Asus eee machine, for light web surfing and perhaps a movie only. I have istalled Linux mandrake once ages ago and red hat once too. The only other machine I have is a bigger netbook on vista, if I can get Linux working on the smaller then use it on my bigger machine too. Is it possible to use an USB HSDPA modem using mint on this netbook?
View 2 RepliesI want to install Linux Mint 11 (just came out) to a USB drive. My USB drive is 34 gb. So I want to put a 1-2 gb partition on it and install mint just to that. Is that possible? I am a noob so I want to use [URL] but the screenshots don't show an option for a partition or state any extra steps that might be involved in doing this (there's a tutorial for doing this for one of the Ubuntus using fdisk, but I don't have any linux installs right now).

I wanted to install a Linux distro to a flash drive so that I can have a portable OS with all my settings, programs, etc. wherever I go. So I fired up a Linux Mint Live CD and installed Mint to the flash drive, and this seems to work OK. But now, whenever I try to boot up my system normally without the flash drive plugged in, it doesn't seem to work. It basically hangs for a bit, and then I get the following prompt:
However, when I try powering my system up when the USB is plugged into the computer, it gives me an option between using the OS installed on my USB and the OS installed on my HD. Selecting the latter, everything loads up just fine. I'm guessing that installing Mint to the flash drive somehow messed with my native Grub installation.
I recently installed Linux Mint Julia 10 on my netbook and it is great.no issues from USB install.My question is what is a smaller distro I can use for netbook...and will it install as easy as Mint 10.I only use netbook for emails and web searches for information..I have no harware issues ..except for my lack of knowledge of Linux.

Preferably in a separate partition allowing boot to either Linux or Win 7.This needs to be a high confidence installation, because if the existing Win 7 installation is screwed up there appears to be no way to recover.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have already installed Ubuntu from an USB drive, however everytime I have to install it on a desktop/laptop or netbook, I have to "burn" the USB again, so I wonder if there is any way to have both (Ubuntu desktop and Netbook Edition) on the same USB drive and choose wich one you want to install at the boot moment.
I usually have the ISO images and copy the files to the USB with the "Startup Disk Creator" utility built in Ubuntu or eventually with Universal USB Installer or UNetbootin...
I'm posting this question in Ubuntu since mint is a variant of ubuntu. I've just downloaded Linux Mint 8 and my cd rom is not working properly and so the only option I've is to take the iso to usb drive and install it from there. I've tried two ways and bot of them did not work.
1. Using IsoBuster I directly extracted the data from the downloaded file into the usb drive and tried re-booting the system
2. I used a LinuxLive USBcreator to create the installation files into the usb drive and this too didn't work out.
installing the linux mint 8 into my system using the usb drive? I don't want to run linux mint from the usb drive like knoppix. Also note that I'm going to have dual boot system with win xp pro as the other os.

A friend loaded linux onto my eMachine netbook. Unfortunately the touch pad and WiFi refuse to work. He loaded it into a 40gb partition leaving 120gb unusable so it would probably make sense to start all over again. I only need basic txt software, pics and internet to work so I am not looking for state of the art. Just something that will work, is not too difficult to set up and preferably can be loaded from a pen drive (memory stick). Any suggestions? The "distro" as I understand it is Kubuntu. Not sure what version but I will have a look later.

I have a few questions before I do so. A.) Is all this reversible? B.) It will not affect my current system. Like, if something goes wrong with the install for some reason, it will not affect my current Ubuntu OS, which I will be installing it under. C.) When it asks you to create a hard drive, that is reversible, right? And it's only used when you are using VB? D.) About the hard drive you have to create. I have 2 partitions partitions that I use mainly, my / Linux partition, and OS, which is my Windows NTFS partition. If I create the hard drive on OS, will that mess up the VB?

I've been using Linux Mint happily for a while until a couple of days ago it just died. Froze up, nothing I could do would free it up other than a hard reset. So, I tried to install it again from a Live CD, but my laptop won't even boot into Live mode. It just sits there, saying 'Loading....'. which it frankly isn't. I suspect a major hardware fault has occurred, but have no idea what. Any ideas?

I have burnt the iso to a CD and when I use it within the VM, I see the Mint splash screen start but then the VM goes into a power down state and stops. This happens about 10 seconds ater the VM starts reading the CD. There are no error messages that I can see. Is there a tutorial on installing Mint in a VM? I did Google this and saw someone recommend VirtualBox, but I'd prefer to stay with Virtual PC.

1. Downloaded BitDefender-Antivirus-Scanner-7.6-4.linux-gcc4x.i586.deb.run into the download file. In Terminal I have tried to run it using sudo sh followed by the filename but get the message it can't find the file. Have tried cd /Desktop & cd/Downloads (Mentioned in a Linux article) but still get nowhere. Also tried putting the file on the desktop, then properties,permissions, ticked the execute box but terminal is not showing up in that box.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI want to install Mint 9 KDE but I need to specify some installation parameters. I need to set the default filesystem as EXT3 so I can create a disk image with Acronis True Image that doesn't support EXT4 yet.
I've done the same with Ubuntu Server 10.04 by including the parameter 'partman/default_filesystem=ext3' at the installation console. I know Mint 9 Gnome can also be installed direct from the CD, but the KDE Live DVD doesn't give me any such option - just the desktop installer.

I was wondering if I can install RAID 1 during the installation from the Live CD.I have managed to set up RAID from the Live CD and install Linux Mint 11 to it, but on reboot it will not recognize the RAID volume as mdadm is not installed. Can I install RAID drivers from my Live CD onto the installed Mint using chroot and get Mint to recognise the volumes on reboot? Is there a better alternative?
I know this would be a trivial exercise using the Alternate CD in Ubuntu but Mint does not have an Alternate CD (at least that I aware of).
i bought this laptop for my parents to use with a webcam to communicate because i recently moved to another state. I have read that the logitech c200 webcam is compatible with my laptop, and should just install as soon as i plug it in. However, nothing happens when i plugged it in so i tried to install it from the cd. there is an icon that pops up on the screen when the cd is in, but goes away when it's removed. not sure what type of info you need. my system is linux mint 9 isadora.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a computer with an Asus M2N68-AM plus mother board running Fedora 14 that will not show external usb flash drives or hard drives when I plug them in. I used to run Linux Mint 9 on this computer and switched to Fedora because of easier LVM support out of the box. Mint would mount these devices just fine.
To simplify the issue and rule out anything I did since the installation, I tested this on both the Mint 9 live DVD and Fedora 14 live cd (both 32-bit versions, if that makes a difference) with the same results.
Just to be clear, I'm still somewhat new to Linux. I'm reasonably sure it's an issue with seeing the devices in the first place and not just an auto-mounting problem.
