OpenSUSE Install :: How To Rescue Failed 11.3 Install

Jan 21, 2011

I have finally gotten around to installing 11.3 x86_64 on a deskside PC. All went well with the installation until the last package, fetchmsttfonts-11.3-1.1.5-noarch, failed to connect to a server and produced a "Command exited with status 5" error. I have not yet clicked the "OK" button on the error popup. Is there any way to rescue this installation?

I had tried once before, and had clicked the "OK" button before looking things over to see what was the issue since I'd figuredwas nothing that couldn't be sorted out later. However, it aborted the install with the system largely unconfigured. I attempted to fix it but gave up and started a new install from scratch, which failed as described above.I was doing a netinstall, using the oss, non-oss, and update repos.

I would like to avoid having to restart the install yet another time since I do not have the packages cached locally and most certainly do not want to go thru the package selection phase again since I'd picked quite a few additional packges. If I can rescue this one it would be great. If I have to start over, is there a way to import the list of packages from this install into the installer during a hew install

OpenSUSE Install :: USB Stick Rescue System

Sep 17, 2010

Could someone recommend a simple (non-graphical) distribution that fits on a USB stick, boots without HD access, providing the functions of Super Grub Disk. I find the instructions for creating a Super Grub USB confusing. Even the CD version has cryptic operating instructions. Yes I know there is always Knoppix, but it is graphical (slow loading) and lacks the grub manipulating functions.

OpenSUSE Install :: Grub Rescue After Deleting Partition?

Sep 30, 2010

Windows 7 x64 was the only install with a separate boot partition which was already on the Dell laptop. I then shrunk the partition to allow me to put opensuse on. Then I made the stupid mistake of deleting the opensuse and boot partitions while in Windows. I was going to do this, copy pictures of my new born baby off then reboot and delete all stuff and redo all the partitions and installs again. Now I just get grub rescue with the following when I do ls command:(hd0) (hd0,1) (hd0,2)I would like advise on how to get the data off, I cannot afford to lose my babies pics as there are no other copies. I will then do a normal install of opensuse first then Windows 7 after it.

OpenSUSE Install :: Mounting Rw External In Rescue Mode

Hey guys by mistake I've deleted my root partition, now I'm trying to recover my data which is located in /home/user I was able to mount my home partition to /home by executing mount /dev/sdf10 /home and I was able to mount my external by executing mount /dev/sda1 /media The problem is I can not copy anything to it, it says "operation not permitted" I've tried the following

mount -o rw /dev/sda1 /media
mount -o remount,rw /dev/sda1 /media

I've even tried -t with vfat, ntfs, fat32

and also
chmod 777 /media

I get no errors while trying this but as soon as I try to copy or touch a file in the directory it denies me.

OpenSUSE Install :: Mounting Software RAID In Rescue Mode

Feb 27, 2011

I have a software RAID 1 (mirroring) on my 2 hard drives configured through OpenSuse 11.3 installer. When I boot from the OpenSuse 11.3 install DVD in rescue mode, the RAID isn't recognized, ie attempting to mount /dev/md0 results in 'bad superblock' messages. I can still mount individual disks in the array though (/dev/sda1, /dev/sdb1, I did it read-only so not to corrupt the array). I also tried booting from the Centos 5.5 install DVD in rescue mode on the same computer and it has no problems finding the RAID 1. I was able to mount /dev/md0. Is the OpenSuse 11.3 install DVD in the rescue mode not supposed to find the RAID 1 or am I doing something wrong here?

Loading Rescue System (2/2) (10268 kB) - 100%

Then I tried to extract the rescue image and to see what's wrong in the scrip, but it turn out that there is no boot script under /etc/init.d directory, either a similar one that may as it.

where is the script or which is the script does the mount things in rescue image?

PLUS, I can see /etc/init.d/boot script in SLES10 rescue image.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Login Failed, VirtualBox 3.0.8?

Nov 13, 2009

I'm trying to run OpenSUSE 11.2 on VirtualBox (ver3.0.8 on Ubuntu 9.10). The installation proceeds without a hitch, but when I try to login, the login manager (kdm?) complains that the login failed. When I go to the console, my login/password do no work there either. I've tried installing OpenSUSE 11.2 three times -- the first two times, it complained about the simplicity of my password -- and all three times I've run into this problem.Have other users encountered a similar problem? It doesn't seem like a VirtualBox-specific issue. Is the /etc/password being changed somehow?

OpenSUSE Install :: Authentication Failed - During The OS Installation

Jun 3, 2010

I wanted to install it on a secondary computer in my house for web browsing and little-to-nothing more.

How can I fix or get around the error 'Authentication failed' when attempting to login?

I just installed openSUSE. The installation seemed to go well. After installation, everything loaded up and I was using the OS with no problems.

I restarted the computer to change my boot sequence in the BIOS. Then I got to the openSUSE login screen. I was presented with three options:

1. my username - When I enter in the password I specified during the OS installation it says "Authentication failure"

2. Automatic Login - just says "Permission denied"

3. Other... - Nothing seems to work here

How can I login?

after login to GUI open your browser and go to: Bootchart scroll down to Renderer Web Form and upload bootchart log tarball located in /var/log/bootchart.tgz leave PNG format nex press Render chart button. I do not see the location on the website listed, to upload a file.

The other methods I have tried entail using the terminal to convert the file, but I continue to get errors on a failed conversion, or the wrong commands. Is there by chance I do not have a certain software yet installed to make this conversion on my laptop. I have installed the minimal OpenSUSE 11.3.

OpenSUSE Install :: Call To Lnusertemp Failed?

I've cleared out the /tmp files, set my tmp files to be deleted on reboot, tried creating a new user, renamed .kde4 to .kde4~old....no luck.

I think that the best solution is to completely remove KDE and then re-install it. How do I do that? Alternatively, if anyone has a better solution, I'll try that.

OpenSUSE Install :: Failed Dual Boot Win 7 And 11.3

Dec 27, 2010

I've been googling and couldn't find solution to my problem. In the past I was able to get around dual boot with Win XP but that Win 7 seems to be more resistant to dual boot. I have a Toshiba Portege T110 that came with Win 7 home edition. I parted the hdd using gparted and put Linux on extended partition. It was OK up till then. After installing Opensuse 11.3 and installing Grub in extended partition, grub came up but when I chose windows, I got error from windows boot manager saying it couldn't find winload.exe. I tried to manipulate the grub by typing:

rootnoverify (hd0,1)
makeactive
chainloader +1
boot

That didn't work at all. So I reinstalled Win 7. After Win 7 back up, I again tried to fix grub by doing this:

find /boot/grub/menu.lst (this gives hd0,5)
root (hd0,5)
setup(hd0)
quit

After rebooting, grub came back but when I tried to access win 7, I again got the black screen saying my winload.exe is missing. I'm reinstalling my win 7 for the 2nd time now. But I'd still like to get the dual boot with Opensuse 11.3 to work. What have I done wrong? Should I put grub in MBR or the mount point / ? or should it be left alone in extended partition? And how do I move grub to different place?

OpenSUSE Install :: No Kernel Was Found / Installation May Have Failed

I installed OpenSuSE 11.2 64bit from a Linux Magazine #111 dvd and now cannot create DomU guests. The exact error is in the subject line. It is sitting on a software RAID-1 partionion on two (mirrored) hard disks. When I first install - formatting all partitions - it reports error 17 and won't load the OS. After running the Repair installed system from the DVD I get the impression it is doing things twice rather than doing the repairs once on the RAIDed partition. Should I go back to 11.1?
