I've searched this forum and found numerous references to these error messages but cannot make head nor tail of the diagnostic suggestions. Apart from anything else they suggest strings of command lines which I don't understand and can't enter anyway since they don't correspond to my keyboard layout (if I hit > or ) something completely different appears on the screen). Is there someone here who can provide a step-by-step solution in lay language ? Or is there such a thing as a bootable file which can be downloaded and inserted into my CD drive to correct this problem ?

Apr 29, 2010Currently I run into a rather confusing case. I met bellow mount errors when I was about to enter the rescue mode on SLES11:

Then I tried to extract the rescue image and to see what's wrong in the scrip, but it turn out that there is no boot script under /etc/init.d directory, either a similar one that may as it.
where is the script or which is the script does the mount things in rescue image?
PLUS, I can see /etc/init.d/boot script in SLES10 rescue image.
Debian Installation :: Grub Rescue - Will Not Boot From Mdadm RAID - No Such Disk
Sep 19, 2014I am running a 14 disk RAID 6 on mdadm behind 2 LSI SAS2008's in JBOD mode (no HW raid) on Debian 7 in BIOS legacy mode.
Grub2 is dropping to a rescue shell complaining that "no such device" exists for "mduuid/b1c40379914e5d18dddb893b4dc5a28f".

The UUID for md0 is `2c61b08d-cb1f-4c2c-8ce0-eaea15af32fb` so I do not understand why grub insists on looking for `b1c40379914e5d18dddb893b4dc5a28f`.

During the grub rescue an `ls` shows the member disks and also shows `(md/0)` but if I try an `ls (md/0)` I get an unknown disk error. Trying an `ls` on any member device results in unknown filesystem. The filesystem on the md0 is XFS, and I assume the unknown filesystem is normal if its trying to read an individual disk instead of md0.
I have come close to losing my mind over this, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling grub numerous times, `update-initramfs -u -k all` numerous times, `update-grub` numerous times, `grub-install` numerous times to all member disks without error, etc.
I even tried manually editing `grub.cfg` to replace all instances of `mduuid/b1c40379914e5d18dddb893b4dc5a28f` with `(md/0)` and then re-install grub, but the exact same error of no such device mduuid/b1c40379914e5d18dddb893b4dc5a28f still happened.

One thing I noticed is it is only showing half the disks. I am not sure if this matters or is important or not, but one theory would be because there are two LSI cards physically in the machine.
This last screenshot was shown after I specifically altered grub.cfg to replace all instances of `mduuid/b1c40379914e5d18dddb893b4dc5a28f` with `mduuid/2c61b08d-cb1f-4c2c-8ce0-eaea15af32fb` and then re-ran grub-install on all member drives. Where it is getting this old b1c* address I have no clue.
I even tried installing a SATA drive on /dev/sda, outside of the array, and installing grub on it and booting from it. Still, same identical error.

Aug 31, 2011I've recently added a new hard disk and due to mother board controllers this new hard disk is known as sda.Before that my boot partition was /dev/sda3 and know this changed to sdb3.Whenever grub menu appears and I choose opensuse,it can't find /dev/sda3 .It seems that I should edit menu.lst or change boot loader parameter.something like root (hd1,2).But I don't how I can do this with opensuse boot loader.Though I could do this with CentOS easily.

Background: My mother's HP laptop had Ubuntu and Vista on it, Ubuntu my brother's doing. He decided he wanted to take off Ubuntu yesterday (he had forgotten the password), and deleted the partition that it was contained within. The computer now boots to this error.
Inventory: We no longer have the install disk for Windows Vista, he cannot tell me what version he used of Ubuntu, what partition it was on, any of the specs for the machine, or generally any information about the system. All I am aware of is that error on the boot-up screen. I have nothing else to work with.
I would like to remove Grub, and Ubuntu, and leave Windows intact (the request of the owner of the computer), but I have no idea what commands I could use to get rid of either when I can't access Windows, or how to properly remove them if I did access Windows.
OpenSUSE Install :: Will Not Boot Without An Install Disk?
May 14, 2010Have a coworker that plays around with computers. He built a dual processor, 64 bit with 64mb of ram on a server board. Do not have the specs at this time. He installed purchased version of Suse 8.0 server. Using KDE. (Don't know why he went this route. He is not setting up a server.) His problem is it will only boot from a CD. He can take out CD and it runs ok. A friend told me that there is a way to check the master boot file, but I do not know how to do it. I am learning trying to learn Unix/Linux programming. I can do some commands in terminal.

Apr 8, 2011I have multi-version Kernels on a Dual Boot WinXP / openSUSE 11,3 box. It's been a LONG time since I needed to boot to Win XP and now that I find that I can't get to it, I can not say for sure what I did to break it. Looking back, I suspect that the method I used for the recent removal of one of the Kernel versions may have been innappropiate. Rather than unchecking in versions/package groups I may have just removed the unwanted kernel in the package list. Not sure. I've tried dinking around with menu.lst and Yast Boot Loader to no success. I get errors depending on what I messed with. Didn't try to reinstall grub until I checked here for help with a fix.

Sep 17, 2010Could someone recommend a simple (non-graphical) distribution that fits on a USB stick, boots without HD access, providing the functions of Super Grub Disk. I find the instructions for creating a Super Grub USB confusing. Even the CD version has cryptic operating instructions. Yes I know there is always Knoppix, but it is graphical (slow loading) and lacks the grub manipulating functions.

Jan 21, 2011I have finally gotten around to installing 11.3 x86_64 on a deskside PC. All went well with the installation until the last package, fetchmsttfonts-11.3-1.1.5-noarch, failed to connect to a server and produced a "Command exited with status 5" error. I have not yet clicked the "OK" button on the error popup. Is there any way to rescue this installation?
I had tried once before, and had clicked the "OK" button before looking things over to see what was the issue since I'd figuredwas nothing that couldn't be sorted out later.However, it aborted the install with the system largely unconfigured. I attempted to fix it but gave up and started a new install from scratch, which failed as described above.I was doing a netinstall, using the oss, non-oss, and update repos.
I would like to avoid having to restart the install yet another time since I do not have the packages cached locally and most certainly do not want to go thru the package selection phase again since I'd picked quite a few additional packges. If I can rescue this one it would be great. If I have to start over, is there a way to import the list of packages from this install into the installer during a hew install
OpenSUSE Install :: Grub Rescue After Deleting Partition?
Sep 30, 2010Windows 7 x64 was the only install with a separate boot partition which was already on the Dell laptop. I then shrunk the partition to allow me to put opensuse on. Then I made the stupid mistake of deleting the opensuse and boot partitions while in Windows. I was going to do this, copy pictures of my new born baby off then reboot and delete all stuff and redo all the partitions and installs again.Now I just get grub rescue with the following when I do ls command:(hd0) (hd0,1) (hd0,2)I would like advise on how to get the data off, I cannot afford to lose my babies pics as there are no other copies. I will then do a normal install of opensuse first then Windows 7 after it.

Nov 21, 2010Hey guys by mistake I've deleted my root partition, now I'm trying to recover my data which is located in /home/user I was able to mount my home partition to /home by executing mount /dev/sdf10 /home and I was able to mount my external by executing mount /dev/sda1 /media The problem is I can not copy anything to it, it says "operation not permitted" I've tried the following
mount -o rw /dev/sda1 /media
mount -o remount,rw /dev/sda1 /media
I've even tried -t with vfat, ntfs, fat32
and also
chmod 777 /media
I get no errors while trying this but as soon as I try to copy or touch a file in the directory it denies me.
OpenSUSE Install :: Mounting Software RAID In Rescue Mode
Feb 27, 2011I have a software RAID 1 (mirroring) on my 2 hard drives configured through OpenSuse 11.3 installer. When I boot from the OpenSuse 11.3 install DVD in rescue mode, the RAID isn't recognized, ie attempting to mount /dev/md0 results in 'bad superblock' messages. I can still mount individual disks in the array though (/dev/sda1, /dev/sdb1, I did it read-only so not to corrupt the array). I also tried booting from the Centos 5.5 install DVD in rescue mode on the same computer and it has no problems finding the RAID 1. I was able to mount /dev/md0. Is the OpenSuse 11.3 install DVD in the rescue mode not supposed to find the RAID 1 or am I doing something wrong here?

Jan 2, 2010My dual proc, dual core Opteron MSI Master2FAR motherboard failed, and I try to boot a disk, used on this board as boot disk, on an Intel based Gigabyte GA-965-DS3. Both systems are x86_64 architecture.
The OS is on both systems is openSUSE 11.1.
On booting the disk on the Gigabyte, the disk is seen correctly by the BIOS, but not by the OS, and there is no /dev/sdX; no /dev/disk/... either. I am taken to a login shell from the ramdisk.
When I just mount this disk on the Gigabyte (booted with the Gigabyte's original boot disk) everything seems fine. No suprise to me, since the disk was fine, and was unmounted gracefully and physically taken off the MSI before the board failed.
I think that the cause lies in the fact that the harddisk controller on the Gigabyte is different from the MSI, and the driver for that controller is not available at boot time.
I have two questions:
- is my assumption correct, or is something else going on?
- if I am right, is there a way to get this disk booting on the Gigabyte (or on another system, for that matter)?
You might want to ask why I want to boot this disk on the Gigabyte in the first place, since I can mount it and see all data on it. I have a reason for that, but telling that story would make this topic too long, and it's too off-topic. Most certainly I will get to that in another topic.

Mar 8, 2011I've a LaCie usb drive that seems broken. Not detected by nautilus or gparted, nothing at /dev/sdbX but still doing noise when I plug it. I guess it's an hardware problem but I want to be sure. Do you know some tricks to try to rescue my disk (make a final backup)?

Dec 11, 2010Trying to do a new install of ubuntu 10.10 to my laptop. Installation and all works fine, but upon rebooting, after the bios screen i get:

I tried using following some instructions i found after googling for the problem:

but after the 5th step, i get another "error: out of disk" message. The odd thing is that I had an install of 10.10 on this laptop a month ago, and it worked fine. As a side note, I installed fedora 14 after this happened, which worked fine. Reinstalled ubuntu, and it was back to the same problem. I also tried installing with a kubuntu cd I had, to make sure it wasnt the install media, and had the same problem.

Oct 23, 2010I wanted to get the data off the WD2500 (250MB) hard drive so slaved it to an older Dell machine running Win 2k. Unfortunately, the older machine's BIOS is so old it can't read the larger hard drive. Then, I connected it to a Gateway machine running Win 2k; it started running chkdsk on the WD2500 drive and indicated it was 'fixing' a bunch of errors. It appeared to be in an endless loop, fixing the same problem over and over, so I killed the power. Then, I booted the Gateway machine with Knoppix Live CDIt shows the 250G hard drive in the file manager window. When I click on the 250G hard drive icon it shows at the bottom of the window '1 visible item (0 hidden), Free space: 97.4 GB (Total: 250.0 GB)This seems about rightHowever, the file listing only includes a single item, 'Documents and Settings' of size 4.1 kb. So something to do with the directory structure is corrupted, but I don't know what, and I don't know how to fix it

A. I have partitioned my WinXP LTop into:
--- WinXP NTFS partition
--- a vfat partition (mounted onto /fat32)
--- Installed F10 on ext3 virtual partition
B. I do not want install grub-loader in the Master Boot Record (that would loose my WinXP boot-loader for ever)
C. I have installed grub boot loader in the First Boot Sector
D. Now I have to boot using Rescue Mode, do:
1. dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/fat32/linux.bin bs=512 count=1
2. mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /ntfs
3. cp /fat32/linux.bin /ntfs
4. modify /ntfs/c/boot.ini and introduce the statement 'c:linux.bin="Linux"'
Problem: Im not able to do step D.2 above.
Symptom:
** after booting linux using the Rescue Mode: sh-3.2# chroot /mnt/sysimage sh-3.2# uname -r 2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i586 sh-3.2# mount -f ntfs /dev/sda1 /ntfs FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i586/modules.dep: No such file or directory ntfs-3g-mount: fuse device is missing, try 'modprobe fuse' as root

Observations:
* The rescue mode boots into i586 based kernel (I dont know what is the actual difference between i586 and i686 - will really appreciate if anyone can educate me about it). * The installation is only a i686 image and consequently there is *only* '/lib/modules/2.6.27.5-117.fc10.i686' dir and *no* other dir. There is no dir as xxxx.fc10.i586.
OpenSUSE Install :: Re-install OpenSUSE From Hard Disk Using The Terminal?
Sep 29, 2010I'm running openSUSE 11.3 and screwed some things up so that I can't install anything, including UNetbootin. So I decided to completely reinstall. I'm limited to using my hard drive as there's no CD/DVD or floppy drives installed on the machine and BIOS does not support booting from USB.

From the terminal enter these commands
sudo mkdir /distro
sudo chmod `whoami`:`whoami`
cp MYLINUX.iso /distro/distro.iso
Now extract Linux_kernel & Ram_disk to /distro#
Open /boot/grub/menu.lst
#ADD NEW ENTRY#
title Install Linux
root (hdX,X)
kernel /distro/Linux_kernel
initrd /distro/Ram_disk
Reboot and select "Install Linux" from grub. Blog Widget by LinkWithin
Creating the folder "distro" on root was easy and went smoothly. I can't seem to make the second 'whoami' command work, though. I copied-and-pasted "sudo chmod `whoami`:`whoami`" into the terminal. It asks me for the root password, I enter that and then get
chmod: missing operand after `holly:holly'
Try `chmod --help' for more information.
I didn't see anyone reply in the comments of that page saying they had trouble with it, so I think I'm just being an idiot. One person did suggest adding distro at the end on another page and it gets me

OpenSUSE :: Hard Disk Thrashing, Esp After Boot?
Apr 24, 2011Acer Travelmate laptop, 1.3GHz Pentium M, 12MB Ram.pensuse 11.4 (upgraded from 11.3)Vanilla install, not running anything special, always startup and shutdown from scratch, never sleepFor several minutes after KDE appears and I open an app (any app, e.g. Chrome) the hard disk is going nuts. WTF is it doing and how do I stop it? Also some programs take years to start, e.g. digicam took TEN minutes the other day even after waiting a while after booting, the disk thrashing the whole time. But in 11.3 it started almost instantly.
