I ran 11.1 security update today, now the system will not recognize most of my hardware, will not enter X,, how can I recover or revert back? I have hardwired and cannot get the network card to work,,,errors at boot indicate a problem with modules....this all occurred after rebooting from today's update??

I had Ubuntu 10.10 installed inside of Win7, I updated it to 11.4 BETA (I know a bad Idea). Well I dint work, now ill I get is some sort of GRUB console.
I would like to either fix this or retrieve my very important files! I now have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on my computer on a separate drive. But I have not been able to find my old Ubuntu files.
Today i upgraded my system and started getting error when i update, install or remove a package. The error isn't restricted only to one repository so i thing something is wrong with my system.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo I installed this system with the net install disk. I really don't want to do that again. It said it needed one update shortly after install and I figured that a net install would pretty much be up to date and I would be fine to wait on that for a day or two. Wrong. I used bit torrent for about 20 hours and downloaded ~60 GB's to the external hard drive. After a while while clicked the little update button closed every thing else then hit apply.
Walk off, come back and the computer is completely non-responsive and the monitor is not getting a feed from the tower. Not even any num-lock blinky light action on the key board. I gave it a minute or two to show any kind of life then turned it off. It came back on well enough to get online and post this but, like the title indicates, that package manager appears to be broken in some way. In Debian based systems there is a command that clears this up. Is there an equivalent for this distro?

The above pertains to a fire fox update of some kind. I still have the install disk handy but would rather not wait the 3 hours it takes to download the packages. How I can fix this. I switched from Ubuntu to SUSE because it is supported by online learning soft ware I have access to.

If I attempt to "register for support to get update repository," clicking on Configure Now and Next produces the same three error messages: "Failed to download", one for each repository. This AMD desktop machine with this install of 11.2 has updated many times in the last few weeks. Has something changed? The update servers do respond to a ping, so they are up and apparently I have connectivity.

I'm running OpenSuse 11.1 (this may be the thing that causes me to finally update ) with KDE 4.4 (specifically, 4.4.4 release 5). Recently (maybe the past month or so... give or take a week or two or so... first time I really remember it happening is when I realized they changed the repository for KDE 4.4 from factory to stable and switched them) >90% of the things I try to install via YAST fails with the following error... this example is me trying to upgrade avidemux from the Packman repository.

I am having an issue with KPackageKit, actually 2 issues but one makes it unusable. The major issue is that when I go to apply the updates I get the following error message (at least here are the details of the message)

I do not run my connection through a proxy and my internet works correctly. This is on a laptop I upgraded using zypper from 11.3 to 11.4 (I did the same with a desktop which does not have this issue). zypper refresh successfully refreshes the repositories, and the various Yast repo tools all work correctly. Additionally after I am shown the updates and am prompted for root pw, the packages will no longer show up for a while, each time it tries to look for updates the message comes through but they will show up after a while again. The other issue I have is that it requests my pw multiple times, this also happens on my desktop that actually will update. I get prompted twice, they are immediate and back to back. This one is a little minor annoyance but there should be no reason that it needs to make this request multiple times.
I was trying to update (from 11.0) to 11.3. Booting from DVD, selecting root (after "show all partitions", because none was offered at all), there is a message "No fstab found." and then "Failed to mount target system".fstab on target root is definitely readable and OK. (this is a dd copy from my current system, which is fine.). The target root fs is ext4 (seems ok, see y2log):

I recently installed 11.1 via unetbootin from the network onto an old Sony VAIO laptop. After the installation completed, I suppose the OS started to boot, but I was presented with a black screen. I heard "chimes." The black screen does not provide any visible feedback from mouse or keyboard input. I hard rebooted and was presented with an interesting background graphic (grayish, I think) that faded to the same black screen.

I have a laptop with an original linux Suse Enterprise 11 OS, and a Windows 7 installed after, I'm a beginner in Linux and actually I need some disk space, so I gonna free the linux one, so two partitions should be wiped, the ext and the swap, and that will provide enough space for my purpose, my questions is the follow: I'll be using Gparted to format, does not this make any issue or conflict with windows 7? I have a partition of the Suse System Recovery (to conserve of course), if I have formatted the partition where the Suse was installed, are there any risk to lose (crush) other partitions? If I want to install (recover) my Suse after freeing spaces (two disks) using my System Recovery CD, (again ^^) are there any risk to lose (crush) other partitions?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a 250 GB external disk, where there was store a hundred and something GB of data. Pictures, music, documents and TV-shows. It was FAT32. In an attemt to make an live USB drive with openSUSE, I did exactly what I shoulden't do: I mistook the external disk for the the USB drive. Now the external disk has a 700 mb linux partition, while 232.2 GB is unpartitioned. TestDisk from CGSecurity is looking to see if there is a lost partition table there, somewhere. Is there anything I can do? There was no formating, so the data is still there (except for those 650 mb that was overwritten). Is there any way to rebuild the old partition?

I would like to recover my grub installation in a dual boot system. if there is an easy way to recover grub using flash disk? If yes is your suggestion opensuse developed? (currently running 11.3) . It would be nice also to have some gui just to make things easier. If not I assume that then the only option is the boot from dvd. Is that right?

View 1 Replies View RelatedIt seems my 320gb HDD has bitten the dust. The timing couldn't be more ironic as I have spent a couple of days tidying the files on it to burn them to disk.
This is an ntfs drive that had indicated 4 bad sectors but up until today (backup day) was fine. I am unable to mount it and in fact it is causing some sort of conflict with the OS drive and wont let the system boot up successfully.
I am going to try using a windows based PC tomorrow to see if I can rescue the data.
Are there any 'other' tricks to try and mount it with ubuntu that I may not have tried so far? I have tried-
mkdir /media/disk
fdisk -l to establish it's name which was /dev/sdb1 when it was all working but it isn't reachable and doesn't show in the places menu or in any of the menus when using a live CD to get round the HDD clash.
sudo mount -a used in desperation after the mkdir but nothing.
I rejigged the cabling inside the PC to make the HDD a secondary master as it was a slave on the primary IDE to start with in the hope that the system would boot up normally but to no avail.
Yesterday, my windows partition (in a dual-boot with windows7/ubuntu) failed, and in trying to fix that partition, I managed to mess up both, including the MBR and what not. I have been desperately trying to recover them, and believe there's a good chance of doing that as I haven't yet written any data since the crash.
On running testdisk, I have the following info about them:

I am quite sure that the data I'm interested in recovering is in the partitions found on rows 2 and 3 (which correspond to my old windows drive c:, and my shared data drive, respectively). Currently, I am running off ubuntu that's living on my portable harddrive, and system> Disk Utility shows the internal (messed up) harddrive as one unpartitioned unknown mass of 250gb, with "bad sectors".

I was trying to resize an external ntfs hard drive, so that I could make room at the front of the disk for a swap partition. At the end of the process gparted encountered an error. It couldn't see my disk again until I rebooted the system. Now, when it looks at the hard drive, it sees it as one big unpartitioned hard drive.
I'm pretty sure all the data is still there, uncorrupted. I just can't access it. How can I fix this?
