I was hoping that someone on this forum could help me to multiboot my USB drive with openSUSE 11.4 and Ubuntu 10.10. I would also like the changes I make to the files and settings on my operating systems which are located on my flash drive to be persistent. I am a bit of a Linux noob so I was hoping for some easy, basic, step-by-step instructions on how to do this. AlsoI do not mind using a terminal or other similar applications but I would prefer otherwise as I do not want to mess up.
I've got a multiboot system with Windozin the first drive and first partition like everyone recommends. I have several distro's and just let them install their bootloaders, but always on hd0 mbr. I installed Debian 5.0.1 this way and it wouldn't boot, so I got SGD to "fix" it, which it said was successful, but all I get is a partition doesn't exist when I try to boot. I put Debian on /dev/sdb3, I loaded Linux Rescueand mounted sdb3 and verified that its menu.lst had the right boot numbers (hd1,2). fdisk even showns /dev/sdb3 as boot as shown by the asterisk under the boot column. Should I do a complete reinstall of grub, maybe using one of the other distro's as the holder of grub? At one time they did all the grub launching as each addition was made
I am using Opensuse 11.2 for the last few days, and I absolutely love it!! I have a dual boot system at the moment, with OpenSuse 11.2 and Windows7. However, i want to make space for another Linux OS for testing purpose.
More precisely, I have 750 GB hdd space. Windows 7 in C Drive (40 gb ntfs) and OpenSuse has like 30 GB for itself. Rest of the partitions hold data. I want to use one of the empty partitions for another Linux distro. Presently for Linux Mint. This partition may be rotated with other distros later, but i intend to keep Opensuse permanently.
My Question is, if i install Mint now, will its grub configure Opensuse and Windows7 into the loader automatically or will i need to manually change something? I do not want to lose my OpenSuse installation, neither Win7.
Also, is it necessary to have a common /home partition, or can the 2 distros have their own /home partitions? I'll proceed with the install only after i get a go ahead from here (with instructions )
I have Windows XP and OpenSuSE 11.1 installed on my laptop. I have recently removed the recovery partition provided by the laptop manufacturer (HP) to free up some space and ideally I would like to be able to add the free space to the existing Windows partition.The current partition set up is as follows:

I installed Gnome 3 on a free partition of my netbook but I lost the boot to my suse kde...(MBR). I launched a live CD on USB but cannot restore Grub; the only way is to reinstall the KDE. Then it boots but does not show Gnome 3. Why the installer does not take into account both OS?
I've been trying to install multibootisos.exe on to my flash drive. Instead of getting the menu like in the picture I get a black screen that looks somewhat like a command prompt. I am using an 8G PNY Attache flash drive.
I have been able to get a few of my desired tools working 100% (dban, gparted, ophcrack, UBCD) but what I would ultimately hope to get working is CloneZilla! I was able to get the Clonezilla user interface to load correctly but when I choose any of the options I encounter an error "ntfs volume version 3.1" repetitively. I have a feeling it is because I am launching the iso wrong in my menu.lst config file for grub. This is what I have.

I got a PC (32 bit) from my friend that has Fedora & Ubuntu on single HDD. Now I need to install Suse on the same HDD without destroying other distros. What are the prerequisites for this? & how to do this step by step. I'm not sure how the before installation is done?? I'm not sure about grub editing/tweaking. I currently have 2 operating systems on my main hdd: Ubuntu and WinXP My current setup - [storage NTFS partition, solely data][17GB WinXP partition][{extended partion}Ubuntu + swap]: [URL] I have a second SATA hdd that I would like to install Arch Linux on to. It uses GRUB Legacy, and Ubuntu uses GRUB 2. I would like to know how I would go about booting this, and figure out where my current bootloader is installed to. i.e. /dev/sda or /dev/sda5 (the / ubuntu partiton)
I successfully installed OpenSUSE on a 4gb pen drive using the instructions contained within this portal. However, for the life of me I can't figure out why the persistent feature doesn't work.
I want to dual boot openSUSE 11.2 and Windows 7. I already have Windows 7 installed but I have encountered multiple issues in the past with trying to make dual boots. Usually when I install Linux, GRUB decides it wants to go into world domination mode, and "breaks" my Windows installation. I have reason to believe this is because the distros I use come with legacy GRUB, (v0.97) and for some odd reason it lacks commands such as "update-grub" etc. This means I cannot add Windows 7 to the boot menu without going into extreme complications, which have NEVER, I repeat NEVER succeeded. When I boot the Windows drive directly, I get some error about GRUB not finding the device, and it puts me into a grub rescue command line. Now I am no expert in this field at all, but wouldn't that mean that GRUB wrote itself to the MBR of...oh I don't know, ALL of my hard drives? I really want to install openSUSE 11.2, but from bad experience I am really put off as I know that it ships with legacy GRUB v0.97.I am also running Fedora 13 at the moment, I have quite an experimental dual boot running..been trying to get GRUB 2 for hours now, it is definitely there but no commands work, "upgrade-grub-from-legacy" and "update-grub" return with command not found. I've heard this is just a bug but can anybody confirm that there will definitely be a way for me to "fix" my windows installation after it gets "broken" by GRUB?Second idea, unplug my windows hard drive while openSUSE installs?
I have two different laptops that I would like to make bootable flash drive installs for, but would then like to have at least /home on a common removable storage (either a big flash drive or USB or ethernet hard drive) to share between the two laptops (I'll only be using one laptop as a Linux box at a time). One laptop (Dell Latitude D410) is only 32 bit capable (Pentium M - I think there's a 64 bit Core 2 CPU available for the socket 479, but I don't know if the BIOS / mobo will support it). If I'm going back and forth between 32 and 64 bits, can I share /home? What else can I share - /usr or anything else?
I initially installed OpenSuse on my Laptops internal drive (clean formatted) and everything worked fine. Later I took out laptop's hard drive and put it into a USB enclosure to use as an external drive.
I've pretty much installed Ubuntu Linux9.10, 10.04 and Debian 5 on external hard drives before, however, I just want to avoid certain pitfalls that may occur with openSUSE11.3. Has anyone successfully done this before? And, is it similar like Debian and Ubuntu installs in that you have to install the OS using an advanced option and specifying /dev/sdb, etc? Right now, I have Ubuntu installed on an external harddrive along with Debian as well and wanted to do the same for openSUSE11.3 and was wondering if all Unix derivatives share similar installation processes. I would just like to keep things as I have it currently where the system does not boot with Grub, and instead I have to go to the bios and specify which physical drive to boot from in order to change the boot order.
I have a DELL D420 without optical drive and i want to install opensuse 11.3 on it, also i don't have an external Optical drive. I want to know if it's possible to install OpenSuse 11.3 from a Flash drive or Amovible disk, and how to proceed to do that.
PS: is it a good idea to install Opensuse on dell d420: C2D ulv 1.2, 1gb ram, 60 HD ? it it'll work well.
I have a Chrome OS .iso that I can booting from CD but only in text mode [the computer has issues] and I want to live install it to the hard drive, but all I have is the linux prompt. Is there a command to do that? I tried install, but I still don't know what to do.[I'm fine with a complete install overwriting everything]
I have a couple of USB pen drives, they are 8 and 16 gigs.I want to set one up to run as a �Live KDE� drive and put the �install DVD� in the other.Where would I find directions to do this?
Is it possible to install Linux on an external SATA drive?I have a system dual booting between OpenSuse and Windows XP. I wanted to see what other distros were like so I tried installing Ubuntu to my external SATA drive. After installing, I got an error from GRUB, and I had to recover my MBR.I tried the same thing with Mandriva, and got the same result. Finally, I tried another install of OpenSuse 11.2. The result was that I get a grub error 21. The only result of my efforts to try other distros is a lot of experience recovering my MBR.
Old hp notebook (HP520) and want to install some linux distro on it to use it for basic web browsing and word processing. After a bit of research decided to begin with opensuse.
Only problem i cant seem to install it on the notebook. The dvd drive is dead and hence i wanted to install suse through a usb drive (2GB). Downloaded the appropriate live CD and used it to make a bootable usb disk as per instructions on opensuse.org. The drive boots up fine but no matter what i do i the next screen is always a black screen with a blinking underscore and nothing seems to happen. However compatibility reports indicate that suse should install hassle free and everything should work!
Already attempted text mode and safe settings installations. Nothing has worked so far. XP seems to run perfectly fine on it.

so excuse me if I don't use the correct terminology, but what I have are two USB external hard drives joined into one drive using LVM.I originally set this up using 11.2 and then used it for months on a system with 11.1. The LVM drive would show up in the file system as /dev/mapper/Media-Media.I then upgraded that system from 11.1 to 11.4 using a clean install and a "minimal server" selection. Now, the LVM doesn't show up anywhere. In the YaST disk partitioner, it shows a "/dev/Media" as being of the type LVM2 Media with no logical volumes
Was anybody successful in installation from a memory stick? I couldn't, I get a message at some stage of installation that repository was not found. A suggestion dialog comes up, but the installation (live) disk (the USB flash drive) is not listed there. I follow the instructions on SDB:Live USB stick - openSUSE where there is a part on installation using a DVD image.
I cant seem to get Opensuse 11.4 to install I am stuck using a USB drive but using the imagewriter program that Suse provides to do a usb installation. Everytime I try to install i get LOGICAL UNIT NOT READY, CAUSE NOT REPORTABLE and some I/O error also if i DO the Check Disk thing its always perfect. Not sure it thats because im using usb.. idk.

Problem Context: I have the OpenSuze DVD from which I want to install the Linux on my USB Hard Drive. However, I have Windows XP installed on my laptop and I do-not want to touch these partition.
I would like to increase the storage space available to users. I am planning on adding another 120gb hdd and want it available to users in their home space. Is that possible? Also, what happens if you change hardware? If I changed my cd drive to a dvd-rw will suse 11.2 simply find the change and update the system (like in windows)
I recently downloaded OpenSUSE 11.3 GNOME for my Netbook. I wrote the image over to my SanDisk 4 GB USB Drive, and it boots on my laptop but not on my ASUS 1004 Netbook. I have already adjusted things like BIOS and Boot Order on the netbook but I am still getting error messages such as "Insert Boot Device" and "Cannot boot from USB". I am trying to make my netbook a dual boot (Windows 7 and SUSE) PC.
I think I broke something. I have been playing with SUSE 11.3 for 2 days now getting it ready for me to work on. Now that I want to put some pictures on, I notice my DVD/CD is not working at all. I can seethe icon in Nautilus but when I click on it nothing happens. I ran the hardware info from Yast and this is what came up.
I cant seem or know how to mount it if need be. I opened the System Services and saw this. Start the autofs daemon for automatic mounting of filesystems. This is set to off. should it be on? I'm thinking it is just for HDs though. I have no clue. I was doing the live cd thing for a while and it worked great. Then I thought.. hey do a full install with dual boot and learn this linux stuff.
