I am running linuxmint . Trying to configure my start-up resolutions using the Startup Manager. But they only offer 4:3 resolutions. (My screen is a widescreen, 1600 by 900). So I could check the 1600 x 1200 option but that is not the correct resolution. And I get a reminder from my screen that the resolution is wrong.
View 2 RepliesI recently started using Ubuntu 11.04. Everything works fine with my monitor directly connected to the computer. I get a default screen resoluton of 1680 x 1050, which is just fine.
However, when I connect the screen through a video splitter to be able to use a beamer, the screen resolution defaults to 1024x768. Moreover, Ubuntu then detects an unknown monitor and I cannot select a higher resolution.
I searched for modifications of xrandr en xorg.conf but I have to admit I don't understand what I've read. So my question remains: how can I force Ubuntu 11.04 to start with a screen resololution of 1680 x 1050 (without first connecting monitor only, that is).
I hereby add some information I retrieved with the screen connected without the splitter, so you can see what hardware is involved.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 along side windows 7, It works flawlessly accept for one issue: no widescreen resolution (1440x900).I have some CIBOX screen and XFX HD 6850.

I havent got any backed up x org file and only a live usb of super os/ubuntu - no cd or floppy drive.
I just installed drivers for this nVidia GPU from the website. Now, whenever I boot, the screen resolution goes to 1024x768 instead of 1280x800 like I want it to. I have to change the screen resolution every time I boot into Ubuntu.

The videos and games have two black stripes at the monitors edges this is due to Widescreen monitor.
At windows you can go at catalyst control center and in monitor configuration has the option for scaling so i can configured my vga to play the videos and the games at full screen with out any black gaps (right-left)
How can I install the video card of this netbook with widescreen resolution?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Karmic with an NVIDIA GeForce 6600, normally at 1280x1024. Just during the past week, the resolution has started spontaneously changing to 1024x768, just after I type the password to login. I get the Ubuntu splash screen with the animated light thingy underneath, then the screen flickers and it goes to 1024x768. I have tried changing driver but this has no effect.
I then have to change it manually using the Nvidia X Server settings utility, which is fine. I can then save X settings into /etc/x11/xorg.conf but next startup it does exactly the same again. I have seen a lot of posts in which Ubuntu leaves users stuck in a low res, or even tries to put them into an unsupported res, but nothing quite like this. Is there a Gnome setting somewhere that defines screen res at startup??

This is some thing that I've noticed with any install of Ubuntu whether its regular Ubuntu or Kubuntu etc. The splash that comes up with the distro name Ubuntu/Kubuntu on start up look perfectly fine and as it should until I've installed my Nvidia drivers. then it goes all bung.
Lower Resolution. Slightly different colouring and Not taking up the whole screen. Sometimes it even sits slightly to the right.
Is there a way that I can fix this? I know its nothing all that major but it would be nice if it looked as its meant to.

I added the increase_resolution.sh to my startup menu but I guess I don't know the command to MAKE it start at startup. (That is what "command" means in the "Edit startup program" menu, correct?) If I go into usr/local/bin and click run it works, but if I can execute it automatically, that would be great.
Also, I have added an account(?) for my daughter and when she is finished and I try to log her out the display goes nuts and does not correct itself. I assume it has to do with this since when I restart the machine (and the script isn't running) the picture is fine again. Is there a conflict between the two accounts and this script? I'm sorry if this is not making sense, I know what I want to say, but don't have the lingo/jargon down.

Before I upgrade to 10.4 It would be nice to find the best solution to this problem. I use a KVM switch that dont pass the EDID info from the screen to the OS. To solve this, that is, to get the correct screen resolution, i need to pass monitor and screen info to the OS at every startup. One way is to ad a script to /etc/gdm/init/default, or in KDE /etc/kde4/kdm/Xsetup.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI was wanting to use StartUp-Manager to increase the resolution of the GRUB menu and the boot logo screen. Changing the resolution for the GRUB menu works fine. But the Ubuntu logo that should show up during the boot process is all scrambled across the screen. I tried multiple resolutions to fix it and none of them work. How do I restore everything back to their defaults? I tried putting the numbers all back to where they where when I first ran StartUp-Manager but that didn't fix it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI use normally opensuse 11.1. This days I installed the 11.3. Since I have installed it, the resolution is higher and the fonts are very small. I have some problems with my eyes, so I prefer to use text mode for startup and console. So now I dont know how I can get back to start system in textmode 80x25. suse seem to ignore every command I enter I tried in Yast grub settings to set there Text mode. I tried to add command vga-normal vga-0xF00. Nothing changes it. There is maybe a bug. Whay is the standard resulotion in 11.3 so high ? The installation works in textmode, but after first start it goes up.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.
From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

i have just put a Geforce 7300 GT graphic card into my machine the problem is the max resolution I can get is 1024x768 at 60 hz the screen is a benq fp71g+. also the screen goes blank when i click on the display icon in system settings. i know that the screen can be run at 1280x1024 so I don?t know where the problem is.
View 3 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately my experience in the Unix* based world up to this point has only been using web servers and administrating them, no GUI experience of any kind so I am completely unfamiliar with the setup and entire usage of Xorg or any other Window manager at this point. The issue I am having is with the screen resolutions I am being allowed to chose for my Dell Studio 1535 running Fedora Core 13 and the KDE 4 desktop GUI, thus my issue since I am not really familiar with how to run a Unix* based GUI in the first place.
The basic information, if there is more needed just advise what and what command gathers that info (or what conf/log I should look into in order to find it). Laptop is a Dell Studio 1535 Video is the Mobile Intel GMA X3100 ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics. LCD interface is the LVDS.
So far it seems to give me modes for 1024x768 and on down, nothing above this. I believe I am supposed to use the radeon driver being that is the type of card it is but every time I change the xorg.conf file to use this instead of vesa the system wont get past the loading screen anymore upon reboot and nor can I seem to find a way to bring up a command line so I can hit up the Xorg.0.log to see what is wrong or change the xorg.conf file back to the original driver it had listed.
I am going to assume this is a missing driver or something else it hangs on but without being able to get access back to the system and having to rebuild it again (re-install via live CD) I am basically out of luck at this time. Sorry for the rather poor post but I do hope to receive some basic directions on where to go from here with this issue
I'm running OpenSuSE 11.2 with an Nvidia GeForce 8200 on board graphics card and am running the drivers installed from the file NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run which I obtained from the Nvidia web site. I also have this vga directive on the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst vga=0x346 Yet, sometimes when the system starts up it will go into 640x480 mode instead of 1680x1050. If I shutdown and restart a few times it will eventually come up in the proper resolution.

I just upgraded to the 10.04 and everything works just fine as before (except for skype but that really doesn't matters as it has already been 3 years I'm using ubuntu and I managed to get it to work only once, for miracle I believe ^^). The only real issue I have is this: when I start up my laptop, after the log-in, no sound will be heared as the "speaker" volume level in alsamixer is set to 0; if I raise it from the terminal running alsamixer (as I don't know any other alternative) everything plays just fine, but the next time I boot I do have to do it all over again... So, how can I change the default startup level of the "speaker" in alsamixer?
PS: by the way I do have the very same issue with the screen luminosity but the other way round as is always starts at maximum brightness and I can't manage to get it to start at the minimum, as it did before. At least reducing the backlight if far more quick but a couple of times I forget it and the battery lasted something like half an hour
i just installed 10.04.1 and have done a quick apt-get update/apt-get upgrade.the problem is i'm running a 1920 x 1080 display using a geforce gtx460, yet the screen is cropped in at 1280 x 1024. i have the option to go lower only.i first tried to install the nvidia binary in the old-fashioned way of (system > administration > hardware drivers) but this reported that there are no proprietary drivers in use and there was no option to 'switch one on'.i guess my hardware is too new so i want to install the drivers available at nvidia's website (256.44). this adds support for my gpu.
i tried to install these by exiting x but this just resulted in some sort of system hang. the function keys on my keyboard seem to be 'non-functional' too, making a ctrl+alt+f1 not do what it should. i think this may be a problem with the mac keyboard i'm using.is this just a waiting game? can i get into a virtual console somehow else (perhaps during bootup)? is there a way i can exit x without the system hang? is there another way of installing some workable drivers? should i be altering my xorg.conf?

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64Bit, and the highest resolution available at Sysytem>Preferences>Monitors>Resolution: is 1024 X 768. I want to get the resolution up to 1152 X 864, which the card/monitor is capable of. I looked around the forum for a solution, but couldn't find a thread that explains exactly what I want to do. In the most previous version of Ubuntu that I used (9.10), I could generate an xorg.conf with Xorg, grab the (Monitor, Device, and Screen) sections, and use that with a few changes to create an xorg.conf to get the resolutions that I wanted. In 10.10, that no longer works. In fact, it won't even work without the changes. After placing the xorg.conf in /etc/X11, the PC will only boot up to a text CLI prompt to login. No GUI desktop.
My PC is a totally orthodox desktop, no dual boot, no Virtualbox. What do I have to do to get the resolutions above 1024 X 768?

After a couple of reboots, I changed from the proprietary drivers, to the regular nVidia drivers. After doing this, the startup logo is displayed at a really low resolution. Is there a simple fix to change this and use the nVidia drivers as well?

After installing the Nvidia driver I went to system -> preferences -> display in order to change the resolution to 1920x1200. Unfortunately, the available resolutions were only 640x480 and 320x240. I tried to set the resolution manually, using the advanced button, but when I did this everything was extremely big on my screen.
