OpenSUSE Install :: How To Install / Setup / Configure Rsh On Opensuse 11.1

May 8, 2009

I tried to search the internet to find out the documentation for setting up rsh on my opensuse 11.1 but was unable to find one. So i 'm posting this to help others. I know it is preferrable to use ssh instead of rsh but oracle requires use of rsh. So please dont get back to me saying "use ssh".Note to moderator: I tried to add this to "how to" section but in vain due to "no permissions error".

OpenSUSE Install :: Better To Update Current Setup Or Do A Fresh Install Of 11.3?

Jul 31, 2010

I am looking to update from 11.1 to 11.3. My question is would it be better to update my current setup, or do a fresh install of 11.3? I was never able to get 11.2 to install no matter what I tried so I gave up on it and went back to my tried and true 11.1. What is the best way for me to get 11.3 on my computer?

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Configure Lastb

Nov 3, 2010

This is apparently a long standing problem across all Linux distros for some time now, and various posted solutions may be distro and version specific.Am hoping that someone can post a solution that should work for OpenSuSE, and if necessary for each currently supported version. What is lastb?lastb is the "bad logon" corollary to the working "last" that reads successful logons to the file /var/log/wtmp. At the moment I haven't checked but the OpenSuSE Forum post I listed below suggests that failed ssh logons may be logged to btmp, but no local terminal failures are and it's unclear if any other types of failed logons are supported.

Some relevant links I've foundThe only relevant OpenSuSE Forums post I've foundThe only relevant Novell Forums post I've foundA RH List postWhat I've triedHave created /var/log/btmp and /var/log/ftmp files and applied permissions copying from the wtmp file as described in the Novell Forum post and verified permissions are applied. On my machine (11.3), the wtmp default group permission is "tty."Then, after verifying that lastb can find and read the btmp and ftmp files, from a console executed failed "su root" commands (wrong password) to try to generate a failed logon entry which I expect should be logged into either btmp or ftmp.Result is that nothing is written to either btmp or ftmp. According to many references on the Internet, typically ( ) systems should be automatically configured to write at least some bad logon types to either btmp or ftmp when the files exist.

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Configure Repositories For 11.4

Mar 13, 2011

In this blog post I explain how to use "Install/Remove Software" to configure your repositories, which repositories you'll want to add, how to configure their priority, and updating your system with the correct versions.
Musing Allowed: OpenSUSE 11.4: Repositories

I may eventually transfer some of this to the opensuse website, but I never expected it to take several days just to write this one blog post so it probably won't be soon. Still, I hope that it's helpful to opensuse 11.4 users and I wrote the post so that it was targeted to regular users primarily but also for those looking to see how the repositories have changed with the update to 11.4.

OpenSUSE Install :: OS 11.3: Configure The Monitor Settings?

Jul 17, 2010

The default Gnome desktop now has a 1600x1200 @ 75 Hz which fit my monitor but is a little too big (or at least the font sizes are too small). I would like to switch to a lower resolution. I don't find anywhere in Yast how to configure the monitor settings. No more sax2, no more /etc/X11/xorg.conf? What does replace them?

I mean, where can I set which monitor I"m using (Targa TM4896-1), what are the screen resolutions supported, if I want hardware 3D acceleration (or not), if I want to use dualhead (Matrox G400 DH)?

OpenSUSE Install :: Configure Gnome 3 Shell In 11.3?

Feb 22, 2011

I've just installed the latest OpenSUSE 11.3 Gnome 3 Reload [and in so doing, by the way, replaced two other oses one advertised as something else but turned out to be what I regard as a poor imitatian of OpenSUSE 11.3 (and to add insult to injury it even identified itself as OpenSUSE 11.3 after install!) and the other a Linux distro more popular than OpenSUSE but failing to deliver a working Gnome 3 shell].

Which brings me to the subject at hand: Gnome 3 shell. I'm presently using the Gnome 3 panel (which I got after having to select the failsafe option after rebooting). OpenSUSE's Gnome 3 shell display is all jumbled up to the point of being unusable. Although I couldn't make out any legible print in the terminal (most of the Applications icons are recogniseable if rather tattered-looking), I had hoped I could still type in su>enter>password>enter>nvidia-xconfig>enter.

What do I do now to get a screenshot-like Gnome 3 shell display? I realize that this computer is rather resource-shabby, but I figure that if it'll run MintMenu, it should be able to run any other Gnome shell.

OpenSUSE Network :: Install And Configure My Vnc Session ?

Mar 4, 2011

I need some help install and configure my vnc session at my Opensuse.

Right now I have installed nx client which works fine and is listening on port 5901.

I also want vnc to use when I want to check exactly what is going on my work's computer (when I go home)

I am reading the tutorial here:

And I would like to ask you the following

1.

Code:

For VNC client connection remember to open ports 5901-> in the firewall. (1 port/Xsession.) nxserver is listening to 5901. How to configure vnc to listen to 5902.

2. The guide also refers that

Code:

Here we "Prestart" vnc sessions for specific users, therefore no login screen is presented. This uses more resources as the VNC Session is running even when no client is connected to the session watching it. But there in lies it's advantage, "watching a session" and "using a session" are not the same thing! This method is very usefull for starting long running programs before going home. Once home you can re-connect to the session and see how things are going.

OpenSUSE Install :: Restore Windows 7 And Configure GRUB?

Jan 29, 2010

My problem is that I have installed openSUSE 11.2 on a laptop with Windows 7 already installed. Yast resized my Windows partitions, which seemed to upset Windows as I had to go to my Windows Recovery Disc to restore it. When Windows was restored it did something so that GRUB no longer appeared. So I did a system recovery for openSUSE 11.2 which then removed Windows 7 from GRUB! Now I'm trying to restore Windows 7 and configure GRUB so that Windows and openSUSE will stop fight for boot supremacy and play nice with each other. Here are my Yast2 Boot Loader settings:

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Edit Partitions During Setup (11.2 X64)?

Jan 21, 2010

I can't edit the partitions in the install setup. When I go tyo the Expert Partitioner, I see a hard disk (sda) with no partitions or user devices, and 2 RAID devices:* /dev/md126 with 465.76 GB, not encrypted, type RAID1 (no info for chunk size, parity or file system)* /dev/md127 with 2.2 MB, not encrypted, RAID_UNKNOWN (no info for chunk size, parity or file system)I didn't try to do anything in the RAID part because I wanted to preserve Win 7, but I dared to add a partition in the "hard disk" (sda) and I get an error: "the disk is in use and cannot be modified".

The behavior of Ubuntu 9.1 x64 installation is much alike.I have googled with every keyword combination I remembered, but I can't find anything that gives me a clue to what may be happening.I have already tried the 3 SATA configurations (the IDE that works with the installed Win 7, AHCI and RAID), but the result is always the same. Now the strangest thing is that fdisk and parted correctly identify the partitions. As far as I remember, parted isn't able to do modifications and fdisk says that the boundaries of the first, tiny partition, doesn't match the number of cylinders (or something like it). However, I was able create a partition with fdisk on the empty space and format it, delete it again and repeat the process a couple of times with no errors. The partituions are signed as msdos.

GParted from Ubuntu also shows the partitions, but I didn't try to do any modifications, namely because I don't think that it can solve my problem and I don't want to risk installing windows again. The hardware is brand new, a Asus M4A785Td-V Evo with an Amd Phenom II X4 965 and a WDC-WD5000ACCS-0 500 Gb HD. My lazyness made me asking the guys from whom I bought it to install Win7 Ultimate 64 in a NTFS partition, leaving half the disk untouched.y assure me that it is a "plain vanilla" ("next, next, next") installation . I guess I could try to see if I could do the partition setup in the "RAID" part of the Expert partitioner, but I have strong doubts that it solves the problem and it would be quite boring to conclude that I ruined the windows installation for nothing.

OpenSUSE Install :: Desktop Setup Strategy / What Works Best?

Sep 8, 2010

Having just executed a 11.2 to 11.3 upgrade (KDE), in which I preserved /home from 11.2 to preserve my data and settings, I now wonder if there is a "Best Practice" on how to setup the environment, anticipating future upgrades.Currently, for applications I frequently use and wish to launch from the desktop, I open /usr/share/applications (using Dolphin) and drag the application to my Desktop Folder, choosing the "Copy To:" option. After the recent update, my Desktop Folder files remain those from 11.2 or earlier. It seems now a better practice would be to populate the Desktop Folder with links back to /usr/share/ applications, so that changes would be implemented the the link to a newer file. That would be easily implemented by choosing the "Link To:" option when dragging.
