View 9 Repliesi have registered two domain names that i want to use to connect to my ubuntu server. I was wondering how to do this i was looking at bind9 but that didn't work that great. The server is behind a router with firewall i can connect to it using the external IP address but i like to use the two domain names if that is possible.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a command line OCR program called OCR Shop XTR (Vividata corp) that I am using on a system with a 6-core AMD chip. I changed the bios so that the 6-cores were activated, but htop shows me that while the program is running, I am only getting activity on one core (the program maxes out the one core with consistent usage between 97% and 100%).
I have read that many programs are not written to take advantage of multiple core cpu's. However, I am just hoping that there is some way to get this program to take advantage of the extra cores. Does anyone know of a way to invoke programs from the command line which would spread the workload out among additional cores?

I ended up setting up a basic linux file server as a pdc for that office. Our main office is a windows 2000 ads domain. The two offices are connected with a vpn. I only have two users at the new location so I simply have the linux and samba usernames/passwords setup manually. I would like to know if it is possible to setup a domain trust between the two sites so I don't have to create a username/password in the remote site for every user at the main office to access. I did some searching but came up empty.

Now what I want to do is to create a domain and directory server similar in function to Windows Server w/ AD and join my other machines to the domain, but am not sure where to start. I already have file shares with Samba but now I want to setup a domain.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIn some spooky way I managed to install Mandriva and have windows in all its flavours in working order, however Suse is still a challenge too far. I have one partition to spare, divided it up into one main and one for swap and tried to get the installer to understand that one should be / and the other swap and that they had to be formatted to ext4. I think I succeeded in doing that. However, I then want to get a working bootloader with working entries for Windows AND Mandriva. The installer wants to know all kinds of stuff and I have no clue what to tell it in order to have a working bootloader or GRUB or whatever.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'd like to put both the 32-bit and 64-bit OSS 11.3 onto a 2GB usb stick from their respective Live CD ISOs. I tried to make a partitions on the usb ( 1GB ) each, and then dd each ISO to separate partitions, make 1 of the partition bootable. But that doesn't work, even from the bootable partition. Any suggestions how to achieve that goal? Ideally there would be a main boot loader, which then provides option to boot each of the distro.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to upgrade (ended up trashing and reinstalling) from 11.1 to 11.2. I selected French language with UK keyboard. This option seems in the end to just default to the French keyboad. Reinstalled with UK lang and UK keyboad which is acceptable to me but I then find a big problem. How do I set the compose key so I can enter accented characters etc. ( ...) Prior to 11.2 this was some with SAX but SAX support for keyboards appears to have been removed and I believe should be provided by KDE, Gnome, etc.
Does anyone know how to define the compose key in 11.2? I have searched google and the suse forums but found nothing other than something in German that I did not understand. While I could buy a French or perhaps better a Swiss keyboard for the tower this is not a real option for the laptop and on-screen keyboards are useless.
I'm trying to install a multi-disk (cd's) program and I've run into a snag. It's a windows program so I'm using Wine. The installer is asking for the second disk of a two disk set. However, the program won't release the drive so it won't open. I've searched a bit and discovered the command "eject" but it tells me I'm not root so I can't do that. I'm also worried about the consequences of typing a command I'm not familiar with (as root). I don't want to unmount the drive if that will disable it when I'm not confident I could remount it given my lack of expertise. I just want to eject the disk.
I tried the "straightened paper clip in the little hole on the drive" method. It didn't work. It knocks the drive out somehow and I had to cancel the installation to get it working again.
I suspect this is a 'new Grub' problem. I installed OpenSuse 11.2 from DVD into one (sda10) of several partitions (the others containing other operating systems):-
/dev/sda1 * 1 63 506016 6 FAT16
/dev/sda2 64 4865 38572065 5 Extended
/dev/sda5 64 960 7205121 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda6 961 1859 7221186 83 Linux
/dev/sda7 1860 2759 7229218+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda8 2760 3026 2144646 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda9 3027 3924 7213153+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda10 3925 4865 7558551 83 Linux
I use NT Boot Loader for the multi-booting on the basis of chain-loading the boot sector of Linux partitions. (It is not destroyed by MS re-installations; and is actually very easy to use). I also have an older Grub shell boot floppy which can do likewise:- root (hd0,x)chainloader +1 boot FWIW I found the disc partition & boot loader parts of the installation a nightmare. Difficult to know what it is going to do; and I am sure it *did* fiddle with parts I asked it to avoid. Horribly, it did *not* make me a dedicated Suse boot floppy like I checked. (This is always the safest boot option for a new install: it leaves the present boot system intact, and provides an independant way of loading your latest. You can refine things later). I had also checked to have the boot sector on the *root partition*.
I have never been able to get into the Suse. NT Loader does not like the partition boot sector. Nor does (an older) Grub from its boot floppy. I have tried the DVD in 'system repair' mode, when it finds things wrong and corrects them, same next time... It offers a way of directly booting a selected system; that did not work.
Any suggestions? I can provide more precise error msgs, but it is tedious; and system repair from DVD dicey. I feel that *the partition boot sector is not being properly set up*.And I want to be able to make a dedicated boot floppy; how? I have an identical problem with Ubuntu, which makes me think it is related to the 'new' Grub.
That is my disk
Code:
fdisk -l
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 3724 29912998+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda2 29256 30401 9205245 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 3725 4271 4393777+ 5 Extended
/dev/sda4 * 4272 12104 62918572+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda5 3725 4271 4393746 82 Linux swap / Solaris
I want ot install a new opensuse 11.4 as yest another OS. Due to the fact that I already have 4 sda partitions, I have to make some changes. What I am thinking about is to copy the sda2 (windows recovery) data to some folder etc (nevermind), then delete the sda2. Then I want to create a new primary partition for the new suse 11.4 and install it. What is worying me is the grub boot menu. I was planning to edit the new one (the opensuse 11.4), with old data.
Code:
###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: linux###
title Desktop -- openSUSE 11.2 - 2.6.31.5-0.1
root (hd0,3)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_HTS542525K9SA00_080105BB0F00WDHE41DC-part4 resume=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_HTS542525K9SA00_080105$
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop .....
Now my question is will the settings of (hda0,n), change due to the fact that I have deleted the sda2? I have a lot of unused space at the end of my disk and want to create a new "sda2" there.
I am going to install a computer for multi-language support for English and the Korean Hangul written language. I would like to configure the input from the keyboard to switch from English to Korean. I have keyboard with English and Korean and I would like to configure one of the keyboard buttons to switch the input language similar to how Microsoft multi-language support works. What applications and configuration changes are necessary to implement this.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have asked about this issue before to no avail but since then I have been able to narrow down the main cause of the crashes. My setup:
HD5770 - Running 2 19" LCD's
HD3300 onboard Running 1 47" lcd
Whenever I am in firefox and have pictures open in the browser and move the mouse to the other 19" monitor it crashes, not everytime but often enough to be annoying. Sometimes when it crashes the screen goes blank and I wind up at the login screen, other times it just goes blank and stays blank.
i have a laptop and i plunged an external monitor into it. I want to obtain a virtual desktop[ I will privede more debugging info below
video card
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RC410 [Radeon Xpress 200M]
Driver:open source radeon driver distribution kubuntu 10.04
I tried this:
xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1280x800 --pos 0x0 --output VGA-0 --mode 1920x1080 --right-of LVDS --pos 1280x0
it resulted this error 1
xrandr: screen cannot be larger than 1920x1920 (desired size 3200x1080)
Googling about this error i found a old post,it could be outfated that sugested editing xorg.conf. I created a xorg.conf using "Xorg -configure" and i modified the screen section to this:
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24

I was wondering if there is any way to enable an MS Windows client that is otherwise unable of joining a domain to join a domain controlled by (open)SUSE? Is that inability only for joining a Windows based domain but a client that runs XP Home Edition or similar domain- incapable version of Windows could join a domain if it was controlled by Linux?Pardon my newbie style, but answer doesn't have to be detailed step-by-step, just yes/no answer with some pointers would do. I am not new to linux but new to network services... search engines weren't friendly when asked this question at the search bar...

I am currently booting 4 flavors of Linux - Ubuntu 10.04, Xubuntu 10.04, Linux Mint 9 KDE RC and Linux Mint 9 Gnome. There is so little difference between Ubuntu Gnome with the right packages installed and Linux Mint 9 it is redundant and I would like to replace it with Fedora 13 and try that out for a while. I understand that Fedora still uses a legacy Grub while the others are all using Grub2. I also understand that the two bootloaders do not get along. Is there a way to do that? How? If I have Fedora install its legacy Grub to the Fedora partition will Grub2 see Fedora and update itself properly? I'm open to starting clean if that would simplify things.

I have just bought 2 monitors to be used as a x3 multi setup and 2 graphics cards the same make and model (ATI Sapphire Radeon HD5450). This all works in Windows 7 but I have just booted into Ubuntu and removed the old nVidia drivers and got the supported driver. The problem is only 2 monitors are detected as it would seem that it's only picking up 1 card.

So, I just installed a VM with OpenSuse 11.2 and joined it to my AD W2k3 domain. After correcting the clock problems, everything is running fine except a strange feature that I was not able to solve. After a reboot, I'm not able to login with a domain account. I enter the username/password, choose the domain then it the input fields become grey for 1-2 seconds then the password field is reset and nothing happens. The most strange part comes when you logon with the local root account. You login as root, then logoff and login with any domain account : works like a charm..

I'm looking to set up a server with attached mass storage device and tape autoloader to run linux. It's set up under Windows at the moment. Goal is to have users, connecting from individual workstations and laptops, backup their data to the linux server. On their personal machine, some users run linux, some MacOS, some Windows. I plan to set up the 5 500 GB drives as RAID5. I understand that if setting up as software raid the format is "physical volume for RAID". Under this setup, will Windows users be able to read/write and function as expected? I can't assume only linux user access.
