OpenSUSE Install :: Fixing Cause Of Boot Error Messages

Jul 16, 2011

Using 11.4 I noticed a couple of messages I have not seen before:-

Code:
<5>[ 14.485094] thinkpad_acpi: setting the hotkey mask to 0x00ffffff is likely not the best way to go about it
<5>[ 14.485098] thinkpad_acpi: please consider using the driver defaults, and refer to up-to-date thinkpad-acpi documentation

My machine is a TP T42 but should I try and od anything about this message or just ignore it?

OpenSUSE Install :: Error Messages For All Options In Yast2

Mar 13, 2011

Yesterday, after I reinstall suse linux enterprise 11 in my note book. I got some error messages. They are :
From Suse linux installing processedacroread-9.3.2-0.1.1.i586.rpm
yast2-pkg-bindings-2.17.45-0.2.10.i586.rpm
After installed suse linux.
error messages for all options in yast2.

The story is when I started installing suse linux, I checked first the live cd and I got message that live cd is okay. But, when the installation process was running, I got 2 messages error. But, the messages were informing me to verified from software management module.

So, my questions are :What are acroread-9.3.2-0.1.1.i586.rpm and yast2-pkg-bindings-2.17.45-0.2.10.i586.rpm and what are they fungtions? If my guess is not wrong, acroread means acrobat reader. Is it true? Where is others place I can download them (no.1,2,3) beside the live cd? Or, if the easyest way is live cd. As yast2 got error, is there an other way I can installed them (no.1,2,3)?

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot Log Messages - How To Access In 11.4

Jul 8, 2011

My memory could be failing but I thought there was a tool, possibly in Yast, to access the boot logs in earlier versions. Can't find it now though. Is there such a tool other than console?I should clarify in case I am using the wrong terminology that I seek the log which scrolls up the screen during the booting process. Reason is that I see several errors and warnings there and wish to investigate further.

But when I try to install the openSUSE 11.2, in the installing process, it came up "error messages".

OpenSUSE Install :: Fixing Server For 4KB Sectors?

Apr 17, 2010

I did set up a new server (with mail, apache and lots of other stuff) and was not aware that the new harddisks of type WD10EARS-00Y5B1 were using 4KB sectors internally. The problem became visible after going live because of the lousy performance of the harddisk drives.

Present situation: openSUSE 11.2 i586, 4 GB RAM, 2x 1TB HDD

Code:

Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x000efdd0

[code]....

I already did re-partition /dev/sdb with parted-2.2 (compiled from source) and set the alignment starting with sector 64 (instead of the default 63) making sure that the sector count of every partition divides by 8. Now comes the tricky part: I must partition /dev/sda as well. I can backup everything to /dev/sdb. What is the recommended course of action here? Make sdb active and boot it? That would give me all the time I need to deal with sda. Then reverse again. Any backup of /dev/sda will be outdated soon (running system)Rescue DVD only offers parted-1.9.0

Ubuntu :: Error Messages At Boot-time?

Jul 1, 2010

I just upgraded to 10.04 through the Update Manager. During the updated however I got an error telling me that it was unable to install something. Sorry, I can't remember what it was; it didn't stop the updated so I assumed it wasn't that important. Anyways, I don't know if this is because of that error, but during the boot process and when shutting the computer I get console messages. When I boot it tells me that "mounting none on /dev failed No such device" and when I shut down I get these messages.I see this was asked before and that it isn't a big issue, but I'd still like to solve it. The problem is that I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and Linux in general I don't know how to follow the very general instructions given in that thread.

Ubuntu :: Error Messages When Attempting To Boot 9.10

Dec 29, 2010

I have Ubuntu 9.10. The batter drained several days ago, and now when I attempt to boot I simply get a string of indecipherable error messages which last for about 5 minutes, and the screen then goes completely black. I am not able to even get to the login screen. Windows 7 Starter boots fine, so it's definitely a software issue. Any solutions short of completely reinstalling? I really don't want to lose all of my data.

I made 4 partitions: one for xp, and the three for linux were made automatically. Before installation I got the warning that the partition wasn't entirely below 128 gb, I installed anyway to give it a try.

The installation froze at 92% and after the laptop wouldn't boot.

Now I've formatted the hard disk and installed windows on a partition leaving a free un formatted partition of 100 gb.

I was wondering if this could be related to a virus attack?

OpenSUSE Network :: Rsync Freezes Whole Computer Without Error Messages

Feb 26, 2011

I am currently facing a problem with rsync (or maybe ssh, I don't know yet). I have daily backups that are done via cron using rsync from my computer (client) to a NAS. And systematically during these backups my computer completely freezes (no remote login possible, nothing), so I have to hard reboot. As you might imagine, I cannot do this every day. In /var/log/messages there is just a line like that :

Feb 26 17:23:53 eggplant rsyslogd: -- MARK --

right before the hang. The rsync worked well before and I don't really know what changed in my system config. In /var/log/rsyncd.log I sometimes (but not every time) I get :

2011/02/26 16:39:19 [13229] rsync error: received SIGINT, SIGTERM, or SIGHUP (code 20) at rsync.c(543) [Receiver=3.0.7]

I aldready update the default rsync from opensuse 11.3 to 3.0.7.7, but it does not help. How can I at least know what is going wrong? I am trying to track down the problem but don't know how to start. Last also a log of the rsync command (client) running ssh in verbose using the command "rsync -av --delete --timeout=180 -e "ssh -v -p xxxxxx -i /root/.ssh/rsync-key_eggplant" /mds root@xxxxxxxx:/volume1/autoBackup/eggplant":

Debian :: Lenny: Error On Fixing Broken Packages?

Aug 25, 2011

I have Lenny in a multi-boot system on a HP Pavilion DV-1000 laptop, and yesterday when I logged in, noticed the red (-) icon on the right of the top panel. Mouse over it gave the message: "An error occurred, please run Package Manager from the right-click menu to see what is ". On doing so, Synaptic came up with "You have 3 broken packages on your system! Use the "Broken" filter to locate them". Selecting "Broken dependencies" resulted in the "base-files", base-passwd", and "dpkg" being listed. All three had "Installed Version" the same as "Latest Version", but marked in red in the check boxes.

Did "Edit"->"Fix Broken Packages" which marked the packages green. Clicking "Apply" gave a summary list: coreutils, gawk, gcc-4.3-base, libacl1, libattr1, libc6, libgcc1, libselinux1, libstdc++6, and izma as the packages that needed to be installed. Clicked "Apply" and got: "E: Internal Error, Could not perform immediate configuration (2) on libc6" A Google search indicated several people had run into this problem, but I could not find one consistent solution that seemed to address the problem completely.
