Ubuntu :: Easy Web Filtering - DNS Settings Don't Appear To 'stick' Once The Netbook
Jul 30, 2010
I've been trying without success for the past couple of weeks to setup a filtering system for my little sister's netbook. The main problem I've been running into is inconsistency. First, I tried using dyndns per the instructions here: [URL] The problem with this is the DNS settings (and in turn the filtering settings) dont appear to 'stick' once the Netbook touches a different network. So if I sign onto a different wireless network than the one I used to set up the filtering, it stops working. The reason why is Ubuntu will overwrite the current DNS settings with those of the new network (I have no idea why, and am too frustrated to figure out).
Also, I noticed that even if the settings did stick, they're fairly easy to disable because all she has to do is stumble across the DNS settings, change them back and voila. I've had great success with OpenDNS on Windows boxes, but there doesn't seem a to be a feasible way to apply it to Ubuntu. Dansguardian looks like it may be worth a shot, but I've seen dozens of "simple" configuration guides, none of which that actually looked simple. So my question is this, what is the easiest, most bulletproof way to setup web filtering 10.4? Preferably something that a 12 year-old could easier find her way around.

I have a dell inspiron 600m with xubuntu 10.10 installed, I have it for a kids computer so I installed web content filtering (dansgaurdian) and I installed simple module for admin. dansgaurdian's control files (libdansgaurdian-perl) I instilled both from the USC. But I can't find where I can ajust the settings and on the web dansG is not filtering. how to find the gui part of it?

I own an eee pc 900a and would like to install [url] to it.
The eee pc hasn't got an CDROM drive so I have to convert the iso file to an img file to get it on an usb stick for installation.
This page describes how to do that with [url] with Windows, Mac or Ubuntu using usb-creato. But I have non of these available.
How can I convert the iso to an USB image with the help of debian ?

I want to install 11.3 on a usb flash stick on a netbook.the internal harddisk should be completely unaffected, meaning
- when the usb stick is plugged in, bios should boot 11.3 from the stick
- when the stick is not plugged in, bios should boot from the internal hard disk
I am unsure how the boot options in yast have to be set to achieve that.I changed the order of the harddisks to /dev/sdb (=the usb stick) being the first.I selected /dev/sdb3 (The root partition of the to-be-installed 11.3) as user defined root partition.do I have to select "start from MBR" and/or "start from root partition"? is there more to do to make the usb stick bootable?

I'm trying to set up a netbook with Ubuntu for my computer-challenged Mother. I downloaded the image file to the download section of the new netbook, created a USB stick to boot from and then restarted the computer, pressing F2 in order to change the boot order. Using the "+" key I was able to put [Removable Dev.] on top: "1st Boot Device", but, and here's the thing, it is disabled: "A devince enclosed in the parenthesis has been disab led in the corresponding type menu." I do not understand this, nor do I know what to do

I'm having problems installing Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook onto my Asus 900. I downloaded the .iso then used the "make startup disc" feature in my Mint 9 desktop machine to make a usb install disk. All appears well at that point. When I try to boot from the usb stick, I get an error message as follows:
"SYSLINUX 363 Debien-2008-07-15 ......
Unknown Keyword in Configuration File
boot: "
and the cursor just hangs there and doesn't respond to the keyboard.
I also tried it on another Asus and a Gateway Laptop with the same results.
My intention is to have this the sole OS on my little Asus 900.

I recently switched back to Debian after getting fed up with Ubuntu. The one feature that I haven't been able to get back since the switch is Wake on LAN.If I turn on the computer and watch tcpdump, I can see the packets hitting my machine. I don't think it's a router configuration issue. If I shut down from windows, WOL works.Another sign that it's not a networking or BIOS thing. Here's some stuff I've tried:When I boot up in linux, if I run ethtool eth0, it tells me that wake is set to g (which every guide I've read says is correct).Just in case, I added "post-up /usr/sbin/ethtool -s $IFACE wol g" to /etc/network/interfaces (as shown here: ewtopic.php?f=5&t=42049&p=244736&hilit=wakeonlan#p244736). Also added same thing for post-down.
In /etc/init.d/halt, I changed NETDOWN to no (also from previous guide) to keep my eth card from being shut down. Also changed /etc/init.d/networking to exclude eth0 (as documented in Added "pre-down false" to /etc/network/interfaces.. trepid+wol), to keep eth0 from being shut off.Anyway, I'm guessing that either there's another script somewhere shutting off eth0 or I'm completely wrong in assuming that's the problem. I've been googling this problem for a couple weeks now and I'm totally out of ideas.

I'm running openSUSE 11.3 64 bit KDE 4 standardI have two monitors attached, running simultaneously, nicely, all is well. But when I reboot I have to set them up again because the settings don't stick/endure through a reboot. The GUI configurator that I use is at Menu --> Config Desktop --> General --> Display. How do I save the underlying settings and re-invoke them at boot time, perhaps from the CLI? Or some quick process that will do the job.

I have no clue why KDE is doing this, but whenever I reboot the system, the resolution resets to 1024x768. I really need to stop it from doing this. Also, Sax2 doesn't seem to be working and there is no xorg.conf file that I can see of.

I've got a Disney edition Asus EeePC with an xp/9.10 nbr dual boot. The 9" screen has a native resolution of 1024x600, but in xp it can expand that to 1024x768- either by scrolling the desktop up and down a bit, or by what they call "LCD Compress" mode, where ever thing gets squished vertically a bit to fit 768pixels of info in 600 pixels of space.
My daughter uses it to play games on webkinz.com, and their games pop up on a 800px high non resizable or scrollable window, so there are controls and junk that fall off the bottom that can't be reached unless I'm put it in one of the 768 pixel modes. That, and with her task bar set to auto hide, she can play games and have a good time. how do I set up Ubuntu 9.10 to do the same thing? Right now, the only screen resolution in Ubuntu is 1024x600.

am currently using Windows 7 across my networked PCs at home.
I've just received my new Samsung N250 Plus Netbook which comes with Windows 7 Starter (yuk). I read a post on Ebuyer from someone who has installed ubuntu on his N250 so thought I'd give it a go tonight.
My main concern is whether my wi-fi card (Broadcom 802.11n according to windows) will work when I remove windows and install ubuntu. I intend to use the netbook for internet use only while working abroad.
Is it possible to test it works by running ubuntu from my USB stick first (without removing windows 7)?

I bought a Asus eeepc a few days ago which I really like, with the exception of one thing - windows 7 starter. I like Windows 7, but starter is just bad. I also really like ubuntu, so I've decided to put it on my netbook. I download the netbook edition from the site, put it on a usb drive, and than tested it out - well, my screen is dim, very dim. Changing the brightness setting on the tool bar up top doesn't change anything, and using the function keys does change it, but still keeps it very dim.
I've tried restarting my computer, same thing, I've tried messing around with settings in the battery options, nothing... I really don't want to install it if its going to be this dark, I can see things, but its not very pleasant to use. I'm starting to consider that its the problem with the file I downloaded. Theres nothing wrong with my netbook, everything worked perfectly fine in Windows 7. I use the full version of ubuntu 10.04 on my other laptop which works perfectly fine, I'm not sure why this version is acting so weird on my netbook.

Not sure if this is the right forum for Linux Mint but I heard it is based on Ubuntu so I figured it might be ok. Let me know if I'm wrong. I'm having trouble getting the X server settings to stay when using the Nvidia X configuration tool on Linux Mint 9.10. Everytime I try to save to xorg.conf it gives me "Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'!" even when using the sudo command.

I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix edition onto a Acer Aspire one netbook. I am attempting to install the OS from a 16GB PNY usb drive w/ the usb-universal installer and ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix .ISO
The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.

Why i cant change from 800x480 to 1024x600, that this model of EEE pc doesnt support anything higher than 800x480 at the 10:1 ratio...
Firstly my question is, is it ACTUALLY possible to 'overclock' this type of netbook to run a higher res?
Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .
And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...

For the past 2hrs I have been struggling to make KDE launch plasma-dekstop instead of plasma-netbook, but all in vain.I removed, then purged plasma-netbook and plasma-netbook-default-settings packages but after logging out and re-logging in the Netbook UI was back! After restarting the system now I can't even seem to get the KDM. I am greeted with a black screen.--- I restarted the system again and the nasty little bugger is back again! This is so frustrating. How do I get plasma-desktop to load instead?---- Great now I can see that plasma-desktop and plasma-netbook both are running simultaneously! netbook on top of desktop. So my final Q is how do I stop plasma-netbook from loading?

I installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and immediately noticed the keyboard of my eeepc 1000HE was abnormally warm. Since I dual boot XP I booted to XP and found the fan running faster to compensate for the previous heat. This did not happen on Ubuntu-the fan just was barely running. I had to place the side of the netbook in order to feel the fan running. I issued "sensors" in terminal and it showed 67 degrees C for the cpu temp. Is the latest Ubuntu such a resource hug that it heats up the CPU?

I did a recursive search using grep in a list of files for lines containing a specific word. It brought everything up ok but now I need to filter it out and print the results to a file with
* Path Name
* A section of the line
The path ends in a colon and after it could be any number of words, spaces, and punctuation which the one phrase I need being somewhere in there - I need the phrase to be filtered out and merged with the path like this
"path/to/file: phrase"
I'm guessing awk is the best way to do this but I don't know anything at all about awk except it specializes in filtering.

I am trying to block unappropriated sites on my ubuntu 11.04 with openDNS I installed it and in addithion to the catagoriegs I checked I also added some sites to the always block list, everything according to the site should work. But the problem is that nothing is blocked (also the sites in the always block list). I cleared the browsers cache but it didn't help when i try to clear the local cache with the provided command in their site I think it says it ignored my network.
About firefox,I want to block images only on facebook automatically so I added [URL] to the always block list in the images category and it should work but it just won't block the images. I should note that I use the same method on chrome and there it work like a charm. how to get that working on firefox?

I'm wanting to use mac filtering to restrict access to certain machines. I already know that I can just add MACs line by line, but is there a way to specify a list of MACs? That way it would be much simpler to maintain a list of acceptable/unacceptable hosts.
I'm not going to rely only on this list because of spoofing, but it would be nice as another "layer" of protection.

Let's say I have a few hosts on the same subnet, and they are all connected to a central Linux box running a filtering bridge. If I tightly control the communications between the hosts using the filtering bridge, is this just as good as seperating hosts into different subnets (e.g. DMZ and Internal) ?

how to set up a simple rule on the server side so emails with a certain subject just go into that user's .Trash. Right now my users will get roughly 25,000 of the same email from our corporate offices and it is destroying their email clients. I believe the mail setup is postfix and courier with virtual users. I tried googling this up but I couldn't find much current or ubuntu-specific information.

I'm in charge of a church computer lab which is open to children ages 6 to 16 for about 3 hours a week. We try to have adult supervision but don't have 100% coverage.
The lab has a maximum of 8 computers, a mixture of MACs, Windows XP, and Linux machines, depending on their state of repair.
The church's current internet connection is Verizon residential speed DSL to a 4 port wired plus wireless router in a locked office which also houses our Windows XP office computer and is adjacent to our locked pastor's office.
Internet access for the lab is by a single CAT5 cable passing through a small hole in a wall to a network switch on the other side. All of the lab computers are connected to the switch by CAT5 cable.
I would like to add a server in the locked office to log internet usage and block access to certain websites as needed. I think logging internet activity will be a good antidote in case one of the older ones wants to try to get sneaky and cover their tracks.
I envision building a computer from donated parts, including 2 NICs.
I have never done things from the server end, but think the server edition of Ubuntu would be a good starting point.
My goal is to be able to manage internet access with an easy to use GUI system so I could teach the basics to a couple of youth leaders to use it when I'm not there.
