i am a fresh and new user to linux who started to use suse11.i am having ati graphics card for my product but don't how to install it.i downloaded the driver from my vendor's website.i double clicked the driver but it is not installed like windows.please tell me how to install it.

I've tried to activate the "ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX graphics driver" from the System>Administration>Additional drivers and it has an error halfway through the process.
I use an ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5770 in my computer (if that helps), and Ubuntu is on my USB(8GB).
The error message I receive (after awhile of waiting) is :

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on what used to be a windows vista. I bought me a new graphics card today so that I could run dual screen (GeForce210). I saw a guide at [URL] and I followed it.
I typed: sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
then I restarted my computer, once again as instructed I typed:
sudo nvidia-xconfig then logged out as instructed...
After I logged out the screen went black and I was not able to login. So I restarted my computer. Now when I turn on my computer I am getting this error and it's stopping at it.

It stops on this screen. I do not want to wipe it but I cannot get it started. I do have an external hard drive and at the moment I am using my Ubuntu disc to "try Ubuntu" I was going to try backing up everything I have but it will not let me access root because I am not logged on to that user, is there anything I can do to get pass this? I've called around and no one is willing to work on my computer since it is now running on Ubuntu 10.10

I verified my system's(dual boot system) graphics card using windows OS and it showed NVIDIA Quadro FX 570, but in X11 configuration it shows "Card: VESA Framebuffer Graphics" and the Properties tab is not active.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI revived my old desktop (failed psu), and installed debian squeeze using netinst. It has a nvidia geForce 7600GT card. The driver in squeeze does not work very well, so I downloaded nvidia driver-installer. When I run it, it comes back with an error saying the kernel (I assume the nvidia graphics kernel) is compiled with gcc4.3, but the system is using gcc4.4. Using synaptic manager, I installed gcc3.3, but same error.
Next I tried to uninstall gcc4.4 and it gave a warning the system might not be usable. I did not understand it, but I went ahead and uninstalled gcc4.4 and guess what, the system is not usable, and I have to re-install squeeze. Not a big loss, since I do not have much in it. How to install this nvidia driver, specifically, how do I get switch to gcc4.3 from gcc4.3? Also, the squeeze install gave me 2.6.33-trunk-amd64, and 2.6.33-3-amd64. How do I get rid of ...trunk-amd64? Do I just delete it from grub?
I installed a new graphics card (Nvidia GeForce GT240 1 Gb, 128bit DDR3) on my gigabyte VA900M motherboard, with my computer running a dual boot of windows 7 (64 bit) and ubuntu 9.10 (64 bit). The computer would not boot past the memory test stage. To solve this, i flashed the BIOS with the latest upgrade for the motherboard from the Gigabyte website. This still did not work, so, doing the usual "testing hardware combinations by unplugging and replugging", I removed 1 Gb of RAM, which solved the problem of booting past memory test (a case of too much memory?)
Problem: The problem now is, GRUB wont boot from the HD, unless I have the Windows 7 disk (or Ubuntu Live) in the DVD drive. If i dont press a key to boot from the disk, Grub will then load. how to make GRUB boot from the HD? Do I need to redirect/reinstall GRUB? Im pretty sure it is not a BIOS problem.
I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit.
It came up saying I could install 2 proprietary drivers, one for my WiFi adapter (which works perfectly) and one for my graphics card - a Sapphire AIT Radeon HD 5770 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card. The driver is called ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX graphics driver. Before installing this driver I was unable to have Extra Visual Effects in Appearances. However after installing (and restarting) the menu bars are now in a basic light gray mode, rather than the sleek Ubuntu black. - Although Extra Visual Effects does now work. I've tried rebooting, and I've had a look around in ATI "Catalyst Control Center" but nothing has worked so far.
Does anybody know what this windows mode is, how to change it back to normal and why it's doing it in the first place?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a system with two nVidia graphics cards, with monitors connected to each graphics card. I used nvidia-settings to setup a X server for each graphics card. Rebooted with saved xorg.conf file. I do see all monitors displaying their correct image. I am using Gnome 2 supplied with 11.3. The problem is: how do I start applications on the 2nd X server? If I use the application launcher on 2nd X server, the applications appear on the monitors of the 1st X server. I am also unable to move applications windows from one X server to the other.

I was looking to get glx to work with direct rendering. So i installed the nvidia drivers from the openSuSe Sight. I installed because /var/log/Xorg.O.log Said that the Nvidia card was not loaded. I have unfortunately found myself unable to properly boot up openSUSE because I decided to buy the Acer Aspire with the i5 Processor.
I have the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator HD (GMA HD) graphics card, and unfortunately from all my searching online and on openSUSE, I have been unable to find a driver for this that works for linux, and in addition I don't know how to install a driver outside of a GUI.
My openSUSE boots up to the boot choosing screen (regular openSUSE or failsafe), and then that nice list of functions being done is displayed, but as soon as the daemon has started, suddenly my screen goes blank and I am unable to do anything about it. Beyond this point, my OS loses all functionability, and while I can hear it computing, I am unable to actually tell WHAT it is computing. get a driver for this and to install this driver and get this GUI running, that would be great.

Perhaps my last post about this was too long and hence why nobody responded. So i will try and keep it simple and let the experts advise me.
I have tried installing an rpm that I got from rpm search. Namely xorg-x11-driver-video-xgi-1.5.0-6.1.i586 which seemed to install but when I did a query it said it was not installed, but when I tried to do an install again it said it was already installed ??
There is also a file called xserver-xorg-video-sis_0.9.3.orig.tar.gz which i got from this site. I have not managed to extract it properly yet but will look into that myself. It appears to have in it a makefile, so I presume it is source files and I could really do with some help in that.
I've a big question about openSUSE 11.3 x86-64 graphics card driver. How do I successfully install proprietary graphics card driver on openSUSE 11.3? My graphics card is NVIDIA GTS 250, and Compiz is working on my PC. But it's using "Nouveau" driver, now I want to install NVIDIA proprietary GTS 250 driver. I did gooogle many ways, and tried them for install driver many times many hours. View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed openSUSE 11.4, and I really like it compared to other linux versions I've tried, but I find it requires a bit more linux know-how.
Being fairly new to linux, it has been quite the effort to learn but I started getting the hang of things via online support and such. Lately I've been having some problems.
I need linux to run a TCAD program, and it requires some openGL functionality and was giving me errors when I tried entering the software related modeling GUI.
Anyhow, I thought it had to do with my graphics drivers, so I decided to update them via ATI proprietary driver. After doing this, the system booted me into the console rather than X.
I tried numerous online guides on how to fix the issues, by running all sorts of boot commands (nomodset), and I read the graphics driver theory, as well as trouble shooting ATI graphics.
In the process, I also installed a radeonhd-xorg11-something through YAST, and that caused a black screen altogether upon boot. I managed to boot into failsafe with x, and from there I removed it via YAST, however this did not resolve issues. I also deleted any xorg.cionf files in hopes that the system will default back to the radeon driver.
As it stands right now, I can only boot into my system via failsafe mode. I'm keeping the unit off for now as it's probably tired from all the hard reboots I had to do . If someone can help me resolve this issue, I can turn it on and enter any commands required, such as finding out the graphics card, the kernel, the driver currently running, etc and I can post it here.
I just got a new graphics card (all specs below) and when I start up the computer, it loads the BIOS, then says it's loading grub 2, then says, "Initializing gfx code..." and hangs there forever. How can I diagnose this and find out if the card will work with my computer and opensuse 11.1?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have installed several different distro's over the last coupled of weeks and have finally as intended come back to 11.4. Last time I installed it my pc was fitted with an older nvidia card and I installed a newer 200 series and got it to work with X11 using the nvidia driver. This time I did the install with the new card in and things haven't gone the same way. I have finished up with the os drivers on my system, nouveau and "swrast (No 3D Acceleration) (7.10)". Performance wise it's way way behind the nvidia driver.
Glxgears for instance runs at under 1/2 the speed even at a lower resolution. I suppose I could still configure to suite my monitor but given that difference in performance would you? I have done what I can easily do with repositories but no signs of nvidia drivers. I can download one as I did last time but from what I have read previously the above drivers may mean that I have to recompile the kernel. A simpler solution might be to re install with my old card in. Can't say I'm too keen on either option. Some distro or the other had a driver helper and installed the nvidia one perfectly.
I belive there is a problem with my graphics card, because when I start a VMware vm with accellerated graphics, i get this message: Code: Cannot open file "/home/joe/.vmware/dndlogs/ * dndlog.conf": No such file or directory. 3D graphics acceleration will be disabled. This computer does not have a 3D graphics system supported by VMware Workstation. My laptop model is the ASUS U52F-BBL9 btw.

I also bought a PCI-Express Nvidia graphics card so I could use the VDPAU feature on Linux (plays H.264 in hardware). The BIOS has three settings about which display to initialize first:
Integrated graphics
PCI graphics
PCI-Express graphics (PEG)
I set the BIOS on PEG, but
I cannot get anything, not even a splash screen or POST messages, to emerge from the PCI-Express graphics card. (I'm using a DVI connector; the card also has an HDMI output.)I cannot get the kernel lspci to see the graphics card; the only VGA controller it acknowledges is the integrated one.Running dmidecode acknowledges the existence of an x16 PCI Express slot, and it says

There is an additional BIOS setting called "Internal Graphics Mode" which is normally set to "Auto" which means it is supposed to prefer a PCI Express VGA card. I set it to "Disabled" which now means I'm getting no output at all. I will soon be learning how to do a BIOS reset!
Other information: The PCI-E card is a MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210. This is a fanless card. Although there are no fans to see turning, the heat sink on the PCI-E card is definitely getting hot, so the card is getting some sort of power.It gets all its power from the PCI-E slot; there is no external power connector.The BIOS is an AMI Award BIOS.how can I make the PCI Express graphics card visible to Ubuntu?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running openSUSE 11.4 with GNOME. I have an EVGA nvidia GTX 285 installed, which is equipped with a variable speed fan. I'm running the nvidia driver package which includes the nvidia X Server Settings utility. The utility allows me to view the fan speed as a percentage of its maximum speed but does not allow adjustment. It appears that the speed remains at the card default of 40% regardless of GPU or card temp. When running certain graphic-intensive applications my card runs quite hot (sometimes >70 degrees C). Although this isn't hot enough to burn the card up in the short term, it is certainly hot enough to shorten my video card's lifespan.
So, the question is how do I set up my system so I can increase the fan speed to 50% or better yet, get it to increase as the GPU temp increases? The nvidia X Server Settings help indicates that fan speed is adjustable after enabling coolbits, but coolbits is not installed on my system and is not available from the default repositories. What is the easiest way to obtain, install and enable coolbits? I have no intention of overclocking my card. It was too expensive to risk damage to the card.
