Software :: Installing Gcc On Puppy / "Failed Mounting Or Unmounting" / No Such File Or Directory?
Jan 19, 2010I've recently installed Puppy Linux on a "second-hand" machine, and I'm trying to get gcc installed so that I can (hopefully) compile some wireless drivers for the USB adapter I'm trying to make work.
I've tried everything I can think of, including following the instructions on the Puppy website. When I click the devx_430.sfs file, it simply fails to mount ("Failed mounting or unmounting."). So I tried getting the gcc and make packages (+dependencies) from the Ubuntu repos, and install those (Puppy has an "undeb" utility). There are actually supposedly two ways of doing that: one is to click on the file in ROX-Filer, and that opens a confirmation dialog to install, so I tried that first (with all the .debs). That seemed to report a successful installation for each package (confirmation dialogs popped up to report installation success), but when I tried typing "gcc" in the terminal, it still couldn't find it ("bash: gcc: command not found").
So then I tried the second way: using "undeb" in the terminal. That again was supposedly successful (no errors), but still "bash: gcc: command not found" and "/usr/bin/gcc: No such file or directory".
So then I tried "file /usr/bin/gcc" and it gives this:

And of course, as expected, "find / -name "gcc-4.3" finds nothing.
Where are these files being extracted to, if at all? And I can't just use the package manager, because I don't have internet (this is how I'm trying to get internet). Am I totally screwed?
OpenSUSE Hardware :: Unmounting Creative Zen X Fi?
Mar 2, 2011been puzzling over this for a while, searched forums and net but no issues/solutions found. I have the above device plugged in and working fine. However when un-mounting - either through dolphin or device notifier, I get the report that the item is unmounted but then when removing USB cable from the Zen, it closes down and then rebuilds the entire 16GB collection - this takes quiet a bit of time and I worry that I may end up frying the Zen. Is there a fix for this in Suse or is it the zen. it doesn't happen on my work machine running windows though.

Jul 11, 2011when I am pressing the shut down button inside kde I receive this nice black screen with the green status messages indicating what was done successfuly. At the unmounting file systems though I have to wait for a 20-30mins duration to finished. I have two or three network shares but even a timeout would not take more than 1 min to appear.

OpenSUSE :: SMB Keeps Shutting Down After About A Minute?
Jan 21, 2010i glad i switched, but still have lots to learn. Any who, currently i am working on a server for some residents at my current job. I have DNS and everything setup right and it is working. Samba on the other hand is configured right but it keeps shutting down after about a minute. When i run this command:
chksmb status
it says "Dead". Ill restart the service(rcsmb start), and keep checking the status, and after about a minute it shuts down again. I have done a restart, double checked my configurations and still cant find why this is happening. (config file somewhere?)

Feb 17, 2010Suse 11.1 opera 10. When I shut down opera browser I assume it should shut down completely? Infact sometimes it does, but often it just goes to sleep (futex_wait). Any way to make it shutdown/kill itself every time ???

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 32bit Shutting Down And Rebooting?
Sep 30, 2010I have installed Opensuse 11.3 32bit on my machine. Everything works except it will not reboot or shut down. I get as far as the lizard then it stops like It does not know how to. I run su user in terminal and give init 0 command and it will shut down. but init 6 just does the same as reboot above.

Mar 15, 2010I have never been able to see the splash screen, something that I'd like. I have checked the options on the bootloader and it says "splash=silent" (that's disabled?). I found it confusing, because the ubuntu kernel boots with "splash" but when I try that option on OpenSuSE 11.2 it doesn't.Also when I shut down the laptop the screen goes crazy, only the two top cms shows "something" which are blinking and crazy green and white console words moving from one place to another so fast I can't even been able to read what it actually says.Either way, the laptop shuts down without any problem (?). I think is the normal shutdown process (without splash) but it's a bit perturbing. I've had had a couple of kind of "aesthetics" issues, but far from critical. My overall experience with OpenSuSE after 4 or 5 years being "debianized" have been very nice .

Apr 29, 2010'm running openSUSE 11.2 with KDE 4.4.2.
Since i installed KDE 4.* Whenever I go to shutdown, I get the shutdown dialogue, I hit shutdown, it logs me off, shows some text on shutdown screen, and then opens up the GUI again, bringing up a small window, where It asks for the root password, in order to shutdown. If i don't give it the root password, it goes to the login screen.
I cannot, any way, command line, GUI, or anything, shutdown without providing a root password.
If I use the command shutdown now, as root, it logs me off and goes through an endless cycle of logging off, and then asking for root to shut down, and not shutting down (All on the CLI), and everytime i give it the password, it cancels shutdown and goes back to the prompt. I eventually have to pull the battery to kill it in that case..
I have tried chmoding the shutdown scripts to make it work, it doesn't.

The system always returns to the login page which requires to choose account id and enter passwd even when I type in correct normal user id and passwd. The root account can be used.

Debian :: 8.3 - External HDD Constantly Unmounting
Mar 30, 2016Running Debian 8.3.
I have an external hard drive (1TB MyBook) mounted via fstab by UUID to a directory. When copying/writing/reading a lot of files from it, it randomly unmounts and remounts as a different device.
It'll start as /dev/sdb1, I'll set a lot of files to copy to it and then it'll unmount and re-acknowledge itself as /dev/sdc1, the file copying process will crash and the current directory in terminal will display an I/O error. Running mount -a remounts it back to the directory specified in fstab as /dev/sdc1 and the loop continues. If it's just idling, there's no issue, only does this under load.
How can I diagnose what is causing it to unmount?

I am having difficulty because none of the USB drives I am using are unmounting as they should be. normally speaking when erasing data from my USB key when you come to unmounting it it will ask if you would like to send this data to the recycle bin thus giving you back the extra storage space on the device. 10.04 isnt allowing me to send these items to the recycle bin ad doesn't give the option to do this.

Apr 18, 2011I've spent the better part of an afternoon looking for a solution to a problem: backing up my installation of 10.10 as an image file to an external hard drive. My research has yielded a lot of suggestions for clonezilla, dd, and partimage/particlone, but those don't seem very appealing, due to a number of issues (can't backup live, copies free space as well, doesn't handle ext4, etc). Also why is clonezilla 150mb?
I'd like a simple solution that can clone an entire disk (used space only) to an explorable image file on a separate hard drive and be able to do it while the operating system is running on the disk. I used to use apricorn ez gig to do this on windows and it worked like a charm, but I can't seem to find a similar solution that creates and explorable .iso image file with linux. I've used superduer on osx, which is awesome and i wish there was something like that for ubuntu/linux.
Ubuntu :: Upstart Not Unmounting Disks?
Jul 20, 2011Very frustrated. I have used Unix for ages so I understood the SysV startup stuff. But I have not had a lot of luck with Upstart. The other day I noticed that on every reboot my disks are getting fsck'd. I just recently put an ext2 on /tmp so this takes a while (the ext4 drives just rip through their journals).
The problem is no one is unmounting them on a KDE restart (4.X). I started out looking at /etc/init.d/umountfs and putting some logging in there. It never runs. This is despite that /etc/init has an upstart job that is supposed to run all the runlevel stuff.
I also tried to log some info in /etc/init/mountall-shell.conf which looks like it tries to do a umount -a on shutdown (which is probably not a good idea; you need to unmount in a particular order). That doesn't seem to happen either. I am not even sure how to troubleshoot this further. I suppose I need to see if the reboot( command has the same problem. Or if I shut down kdm first if it goes away.
General :: Unmounting And Remounting A Volume ?
Mar 9, 2011I have a volume that shows as the following when I do a df -h. How would I go about unmounting it so I can run an e2fsck on it, then remounting it? normally it mounts when the server starts, so i'm not sure how to manually do it.

Apr 7, 2009Sometimes I get a problem with the basic "umount" command. I get an error message telling me that for one reason or another, the device couldn't be unmounted. Usually, it says the device is busy, when I can't see how it possibly can be. When this happens I'll use "umount -l" or "umount -f" or sometimes "eject" but I'm still not happy, because at the back of my mind I'm worried about damaging the integrity of the device's filesystem. What's the CORRECT way to deal with this problem?

Ubuntu :: Getting Error When Unmounting USB Stick / Sort It?
Aug 29, 2010I get the following error each time I try to safely remove the USB stick (by right-clicking on the USB stick icon on the desktop and choosing "Remove safely") code...
It used to work without errors when unmounting the USB from Nautilus window, but now, I get the same error when unmounting from there as well. Is it safe to assume that the stick can be removed even though the error message is displayed? What might be the cause?
Also, I do not have any Nautilus-windows opened nor any applications that are locking any files on the USB stick while removing it.

CentOS 5 :: Nautilus Does Not Stop Automounted NFS From Unmounting?
Jun 22, 2010A client is having a problem with a recently installed CentOS 5.5 x86_64 Virtual Machine (under VMware ESX 3.5). The problem is reported by the user as "Nautilus windows closing after a time when looking at data from the NFS server".
The folders the user is using are in a file system that is NFS mounted from a Solaris 10 file server cluster (VCS). These are mounted using autofs. These are direct mounts as in:
$ grep ^/- /etc/auto.master
/- /etc/auto.direct
$ cat /etc/auto.direct
/opt/user-data fileserver:/export/org/data/something/something
I have reproduced the problem by logging in and opening a number of folders using Nautilus under /opt/user-data. After a while, all Nautilus folder windows that are under /opt/user-data will close and when this occurs you can see from the command line that autofs has unmounted the area from the file server.
This should not occur because Nautilus having a window open should count as the folder being in use and should stop autofs from unmounting it. I don't know if this is an autofs or Nautilus bug but I suspect it's a Nautilus bug in it not keeping some kind of access open on the folder. System information:
The system was updated at install time. /boot/grub/grub.conf has "divider=10" appended to the kernel line.VMware Tools are installed. NTP is also configured and steps the time to UTC at boot if required (maybe this is overkill). autofs and Nautilus versions are:
