OpenSUSE Install :: What Size Should 11.4-DVD-i586 Be - 4.7GB
Aug 1, 2011
The download page says the file openSUSE-11.4-DVD-i586 should be 4.7GB. But my download (which gives the correct checksum) is only 4.22GB. What am I missing here?
update: I guess it just meant you'd need a 4.7GB disk to burn it. Admins feel free to delete this as I'm sure it will help no one else

A fault in my USB key killed the contents of the /boot partition. I could restore grub, and got back kernel files by extracting kernel-desktop-2.6.31.14-0.4.1.i586.rpm, but now I miss initrd! (I have currently no means to make it.)Would someone having this one be kind enough to e-mail it to me? (It's around 6 MB so it should be OK.) I'll PM you my e-mail address.

Why does it take almost 700 MB of automatic changes when trying to one-click install qinternet (223 KB?) I Got to the forum to ask this question by using rcsmpppd and then wvdial. Those programs are ok but they provide no progress bar/speed meter.
Also does anyone know why qinternet was dropped from the 11.4 - KDE distro? What a pain for us poor old 56K modem bound souls here in the sticks of Texas! Hope you meet some of you at the Texas LinuxFest, April 2,2011 at the Hilton-downtown!

I'd just installed a *nix antivirus called Avrira Antivir (from downloaded script & installation files), but it completely froze my system when I tried to start it, and the system freezes at the login screen; which is probably because I selected the option of running it automatically upon startup...So here's the deal: I know that I can run a live Linux usb to mount my current fs, then edit the file(s) that load the Avira processes on startup, but I don't know what these files are, much less which directories they are in!

I did an upgrade from 11.2 to 11.3 at my Dell D820 laptop. Everything is working fine except that with Networkmanager it no longer sets the default gateway received by DHCP. I do receive an IP-adress (wired/wireless, does not make a difference) but no gateway. I have tested with several networks and this problem stays...
Of course I can do it manual (adding an default gw), but facing different wired/wireless networks its very unhandy.
Under Networkmanager -> Manage Connection You can edit a connection. If you do that, under tab 'IP-address' -> Configure: Automatic (DHCP) . Below you can select option 'routes'. In this field nothing is selected (I think that is correct). It must be something simple/stupid but what?

I am trying to run 'yum install cpptest.i586' to run a 32 bit application on my x86_64 fedora Virtual machine. But when I run this command, it throws an error message like 'cannot get the exclusive lock at the backend. Please close any other legacy packaging tools that may be open'. Though, I have checked that there is no other such process running by doing 'ps -ef|grep yum'. And then it goes to sleeping stat.

I have been having a recurring issue for a number of weeks now. Everytime Software Update appears it says there are updates so I click update, enter my root password and then I get this error message:
Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: error: package postfix-2.6.1-2.1.i586 is not installed Now that package is not mentioned on the list for me to untick so I have no idea where it's coming from. It happens each time and everytime the updates don't get done. They just stay on the list and new ones keep getting added. The list is getting pritty big now

I am installing opensuse 11.3 as a text-based web server. I have installed apache2, php, php-gd, php-pear and mysql... Now, I am trying to run the installwizard.php to install this LAMP app and any php file, seems to just download, instead of 'resolve to the screen' in the browser. When I run chkconfig, and see that apache and mysql are running. I have already restarted apache, and it seems to come up okay. I have created a test index.html file, and seems to be loading fine. I have googled for this, and it doesn't seem to happen to anyone else! when I try to yum install php, it says that version php5-5.3.2-1.31.i586 is already installed.
I am using yum, on the command line. Permissions are:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 5654 2008-08-04 16:39 installtest.php
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 48605 2008-08-04 16:39 installwizard.php

I'm running Fedora 12. Here are some of the steps I've taken as per website:[URL]
yum -y install qt-devel qscintilla-devel qscintilla (OK, it worked)
then install the oracle instant client
yum -y localinstall oracle-instantclient11.2-basic-11.2.0.1.0-1.i386.rpm --nogpgcheck (OK, it worked)
next, add the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to your $USER profile
echo "export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/oracle/11.2/client/lib" >> ~/.bash_profile
and finally install tora itsel
yum -y localinstall --nogpgcheck tora-2.1.0-1.fc12.remi.i586.rpm (NO GO???)
yum localinstall tora-2.1.0-1.fc12.remi.i586.rpm
(here's the output)
Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit

I downloaded a live KDE-CD and will install from that on hard disk. My box has 4 GB RAM so I understand I need a *-pae kernel ("Physical Address Extension") to be able to use the memory fully.
Can I install the kernel e.g. from [URL] via YAST, or does it need other libraries / software as well and so the system becomes unstable, would anybody know?

Continuing with my 11.3 install on an old Toshiba Tecra M1 laptop:
When i was installing, i had the options of 1600x1200, 1280x1024, 1024x768 etc.
I chose the 1024x768, because it fit the laptop screen perfectly.
But after the installation, the highest resolution i get is 800x600, and it's wasting a bunch of real estate on the screen.
I mean, if during installation it could do 1024x768, why not after the install? obviously the graphics card supported it.

I would like to increase the size of my root partition on OpenSuse 11.3. Currently, I have 11.3 installed on a dual boot laptop with Windows 7. My partitions look as follows:-
Code:
ash@linux-up5o:~> df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda8 5.7G 3.8G 1.7G 70% /
devtmpfs 1.4G 260K 1.4G 1% /dev
[code]....
As can be observed above, I have used almost 70% of the available partition space with only 1.7 GB remaining. I have plans to install Microsoft Office 2007 on Wine and I know that 1.7 GB is not enough for the installation. I don't mind reducing the size of my Windows partitions in order to increase the size of the root.

I installed opensuse 11.2 on ASUS R2E nicely It have a 7" touchscreen and works nice. The screen is correctly settled to 800x480 on boot however after a S2RAM it is reinitialized as 800x600. I made an xorg.conf with only one fixed mode on 800x480 but daesn't seems to be considered on resume. After cold boot sax2 get the right size (800x480) and after resume 800x600 The video chipset is intel 945 GM.
May this be related to hardware reinitialization ? How to re-initialize X on resume ?

I have done it quite often. Inserted and run the computer from a live CD so that the hard drive is not mounted an changed the partitions. It worked on the old reiserfs when I wiped the windows partition on my laptop to increase the space, it worked on ext3 partitions. Now I resized the swap partition and reduced the NTFS partition on my desktop - no problem. But it does not increase the ext4 partition. No error message it just does not do it. I tried several times with the suggested maximal setting, with a custom setting, etc. It just does not change size. Just for interest I booted into Suse11.0 live CD and tried from there. There I get the answer cannot resize partition as the file system does not allow resizing. Is something wrong with the system or does the partitioner not work with ext4?

When I installed opensuse 11.2 64-bit (KDE) the installer set the root partition to 20GB by default. That seemed unnecessarily large, so I reduced it to 16GB. I then completed the install (basically a default KDE install minus games & educational stuff) and still had more than 8GB free. I'm aware that these days hard drive storage space is quite cheap, but it's not so cheap for me as I have an SSD. Would it not be reasonable to reduce the default root partition size to 12GB, or perhaps vary it according to the software package load selected?

/dev/sda1 - 70.57 MB /boot
/dev/sda2 - 5.81 GB back up for original windows
/dev/sda3 - 292.21 GB LVM group.
When I attempt to resize the 70.57 MB partition, it tells me that 70.57 mb is the max that this partition can be. This was true even during the install

Is there some better way of getting my display size set to 1280x960 when I launch openSUSE 11.4 under VMware Server? Here's what I've done so far: I am running Windows 7 on an AMD Phenom II system (motherboard: Gigabyte 880GMA-UD2H). I installed VMware Server (version 2.0.2) so that I can run openSUSE 11.4. The initial install went pretty smoothly. However, the display size was set to 800x500. I attempted to set it to 1280x960 by changing the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-monitor.conf file as follows:
Code:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-monitor.conf
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Default Monitor"
## If your monitor doesn't support DDC you may override the
## defaults here
# HorizSync 28-85
# VertRefresh 50-100
HorizSync 1-10000
VertRefresh 1-10000
## Add your mode lines here, use e.g the cvt tool
Option "PreferredMode" "1280x960_60.00"
# 1280x960 59.94 Hz (CVT 1.23M3) hsync: 59.70 kHz; pclk: 101.25 MHz
Modeline "1280x960_60.00" 101.25 1280 1360 1488 1696 960 963 967 996 -hsync +vsync
This resulted in a display size of 1734x1342 (or something close to that). I noted from the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file that the vmwlegacy driver is being used instead of the vmware svga driver. There is a note that the vmwlegacy driver does not support the "PreferredMode" setting in the monitor section of the xorg.conf files. For the time being, I have set my horizontal and vertical rates to 60kHz and 60Hz, respectively. This does limit the maximum display size to 1280x960, but for all the wrong reasons. How do I set up my system to get the correct display size?

My laptop has a 60GB hard drive, which my ex-husband set up with a 20GB partition for Windows XP and a 40GB partition with Suse 11, which suited me fine at the time. However, I'm now finding that I need to install a whole bunch of extra Windows programs relating to my work, and the 20GB partition is no longer sufficient, while I'm hardly using any space at all under Linux.
how I might go about redistributing the space between the two partitions (any other solutions to my lack of space problem also welcome)? Please bear in mind that I'm pretty clueless when it comes to this kind of thing!

I'm dual booting with Win Xp at the moment and have been google-ing and tinkering about with my distro and i'm learning new stuff everyday but I have a question about something that's been bothering me. I think i've figured out that the / partition is similar to the C: Drive in windows which contains program files n stuff am i right? and the home partition which contains users and their files is an offshoot of the root?
So if this is the case, i was in the expert partitioner in YAST to see how the the drive was partitioned and was wondering if the / partition was too big and if i could decrease the size and add it to the /home?. My sys specs are 512mb RAM Dell Dimension 3000 with an 80GB HDD 2.8Ghz Intel Celeron. I also have a 80Gb and 160Gb External laptop drives mainly for my movies n music n stuff. Also is the Swap partition a good size for the spec of computer i have?
Here's the HDD Breakdown:
/dev/sda 74.51GB
/dev/sda1 29.52 GB NTFS /windows/c
/dev/sda2 44.99GB Extended
