OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 W/ KDE 4.3 [i586]: Editing The Startup Script Manually?

May 15, 2010

I'd just installed a *nix antivirus called Avrira Antivir (from downloaded script & installation files), but it completely froze my system when I tried to start it, and the system freezes at the login screen; which is probably because I selected the option of running it automatically upon startup...So here's the deal: I know that I can run a live Linux usb to mount my current fs, then edit the file(s) that load the Avira processes on startup, but I don't know what these files are, much less which directories they are in!

Ubuntu :: Editing The Grub Startup Menu To Take Out Some Of The Previous Versions

Jun 12, 2010

I'm interested in editing the Grub startup menu to take out some of the previous versions of Ubuntu. First, is there a reason Grub keeps the previous versions available to boot to in that list? If it is just in case of a problem with the new installation wouldn't it make sense to only have the most recent previous installation? Anyway here is the problem, when I run: Code: "gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst"

The editing program opens the file named "menu.lst" but the file is empty. How is it possible for this file to be empty yet I have multiple boot options and they all work? Does anybody know what I am running into here?

Ubuntu :: 'Minimal BASH-Like Line Editing Is Supported' At Startup?

Aug 22, 2010

So I turn on my PC this morning, and it comes up with this telling me to use 'TAB' to see a bunch of options I can use, not knowing any idea on how to use them properly I type in 'boot', it returns with 'error: no kernel' and then I type 'exit', it just reboots.

I've scanned endless posts on the forum trying to find the most useful replies and tried to use 'find /grub/stage2' and 'find boot/grub/stage2' and it says 'find is not a command' so that failed. I then tried to find out the partition my installation is in, which is hd0,1 so I tried using 'setup (hd0,1) which returned with 'setup is not a command'. I even tried 'boot (hd0,1) but it returned with the first error 'error: no kernel'. Luckily, when I installed Ubuntu I dual-booted it with Windows so I'm still able to use the Internet but I would love Ubuntu back and I had a lot of important files on it. So does anyone know how to solve this?

By the way, the way I installed Ubuntu was through Windows using 'wibu', it's worked absolutely fine ever since this morning. Oh and I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 (Loopy Lynx or whatever it's called ;p)(Also, for more information this screen appears after I choose 'Ubuntu' from the Windows bootloader, it doesn't even get to the Ubuntu bootloader it just goes straight to that screen)

General :: Proper Procedure For Installing Into / Usr / Local?

Feb 14, 2010

I was under the impression that if I have any programs not installed by the package manager, they belong in /usr/local rather than /usr. But if I put the executable in /usr/local/bin, and the jar files into /usr/ local /lib, I get runtime errors about being unable to load the Java classes. So I resorted to putting things in /usr/bin and /usr/lib and it worked fine.Is this something that can only be corrected by compiling differently, or am I missing an installation step?

I've used this program for years on Windows and would miss it if I could not use it with Ubuntu. For people not knowing abt HjSplit here's a link that gives u a basic idea. Try it . Its an amazingly simple and useful software especially when u download movies from net and they are split in to many parts. It's just one of those programs that is tiny and just works.Using this software a big avi file can be splited in to many parts as well as many avi files can be fused in to one avi file.2 things are required for successful installation in Ubuntu ....A) Kylix Library.B) Hjsplit installation. Please note that a Kylix library needs to be installed on your computer before running HJSplit for Linux.

General :: FTP Download ---Procedure And Estimating Dynamic Space Required?

Apr 29, 2011

I have just downloaded Slack- 13.37 using Filezilla..I downloaded from an FTP server the entire directory of Slackware - Current (32 Bits) ..There were some problems encountered:1. When I selected the entire folder in FZ , the Queue size was reported as 4 GB.2. I started downloading and after significant time , still the Queue size was reported as around 3.8 GB..I was perplexed as I have a decent bandwidth and it cannot be. To dispel my doubt , I saw the properties of the Slackware directory in which it was downloading. It showed 1.9 GB.. Is the Q size not dynamic? (Total size - Downloaded size)

3. I was on the edge of my seat as my HDD had only roughly about 4 GB ...So , the Q size was kinda misleading..In a haste , I thought I would remove 2 big installations and wiped off Openoffice as anyway I was planning to go in for libre...I moved some other files to a different partition to ensure additional space4. At the end , early in the morning I woke up and saw it had finished ..But there was a failed transfer of 1 hidden file ..There is still 450 MB left in my partition, dont know why it got omitted.5. Now I want to check the integrity of the download bfor burning to a DVD..Should I use md5 sum? I am not able to determine slackware size by googling...In fact I should have gone in for a pre compiled ISO instead of this directory! But it wasnt available yesterday..6. Is there any good download manager like DAP/ Orbit / Leechget which also gives options like turning off comp after download (useful for overnight installs)...The DW helper in Mozilla is not that good ...I want a utility to split the download into 4/5 channels and speed up the download and most importantly show a graphical menu clearly showing Speed, Size, Time left , etc similar to windows DM

Jun 6, 2010

I have an old laptop that I installed EasyPeasy Lucid on. I have never used Grub2 as my other Ubuntu installs still use Grub Legacy. I have studied all the tutorials which instruct that the grub.cfg file should not be edited directly. This old laptop has one of the dreaded Intel graphics chips for which the kernel automatically loads the i915 module. Of course (like a multitude of others with Intel graphics and Lucid) I booted into a black screen but knew the workaround was to enable mode setting through grubI used the

General :: Editing / Making A Keyboard Map?

Mar 13, 2011

I am just entering the Linux world. All these years I wanted to test Linux but did not have the resources to make a new computer. Then I found Puppy Linux by chance. Nearly all the work I do with Windows 7/XP can be done with Puppy Linux. I am running it from a CD. I developed a smartfont for an Indic language called Sinhala, which uses ISO-8859-1 (Latin-1, SBCS) character set.It makes typing Sinhala, one of the more complex of Indic scripts, easy.

Essentially, this is a transliteration of the 'complex' script into Latin character set and then showing it back in the native script by way of the smartfont. See it here: [URL] Of course, you have no clue what it says. If you copy the text and look, you'll understand what is going on. You can type it with the dead-key keyboard. Only problem is that in certain situations, the font makes conjoint letters where you don't want them. You can prevent it by inserting the ZWNJ, Zero-width non-joiner (u200C), but the keyboard does not have it. Is there a way to edit the keyboard layout and make a modified key layout?
