OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Recent Upgrade Unable To Input At Login

Jan 9, 2010

I just recently updated to openSUSE 11.2, but after restarting my computer, I was unable to do anything with the keyboard(type my password, CAPS LOCK, Ctrl+Alt+Backspace) or move the pointer with my wireless mouse. After restarting the computer again, I turned on the touchpad of my laptop and was able to move the pointer using the built-in touchpad. After yet a 3rd restart, I could not move my pointer using any method.

After a 4th restart, I chose to enter the failsafe mode, where I could attempt to find the problem from the command line. I manually started KDM as root by typing in "kdm", but nothing happened, which means that the screen did not switch into graphical mode, but the terminal only accepted the command. Then, I manually started X as root by typing in "X", and X started. I only saw a black screen, but I could not kill X by the traditional "Ctrl+Alt+Backspace" and was forced to shutdown my computer via the power button.

I do want to note that on every boot of my machine, "WARNING" messages have begun appearing, but they went so fast that I could not read them. If there is any way to read them, I would greatly appreciate knowing. Also when updating my machine, I remember ignoring some dependencies for kernel-extra, kdm-branding, sox, and gcc44-fortran; but I did not believe that ignoring these dependencies could cause a broken system so I proceeded with the upgrade.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.2 - Recent Upgrade Of NVidia Driver?

Jun 19, 2011

I'm using a Dell Precision M65 portable workstation, often plugged to a docking station and with an external monitor attached. The graphic card is an nVidia Quadro FX 350M. I've been using openSUSE 11.2 until recently (with KDE 4.3.5). Then, during a routine update, the nVidia driver was upgraded from version 260.19.44 to 270.41.06. Desktop effects stopped working, and even after disabling them, some applications (presumably relying on direct rendering) do not work properly. I decided then to install openSUSE 11.4. The problems remain, with the additional issue that I can't switch anymore between the external monitor and the laptop display. I've tried several options using nvidia-settings; the original configuration when the system was working was "TwinView", "Cloned".

Direct rendering is still on:
Code:
phoebe:~ # glxinfo | grep -i rendering
direct rendering: Yes
but glxgears, for instance, while giving very high FPS, produces only a black window instead of the usual rotating gears.

The problem seems similar to the one cited here:
openSUSE:Most annoying bugs 11.4 - openSUSE
However, in my case, it appears with a driver newer than 270.29, so I am not sure this is the same issue. I also tried to follow the advices given here:
SDB:NVIDIA troubleshooting - openSUSE
without success.

I also noticed that my card (Quadro FX 350M) is no longer in the list of supported cards for that driver (the closest I could find is Quadro FX 360). But, again, it may not be relevant for this issue. So, at this stage I'm considering downgrading to the previous version of the driver (260.19.44). Before doing that, however, I thought to check for configuring options I may have missed.

Summary of HW/SW:
Model: Dell Precision M65
CPU: Intel Core2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz
Graphic Card: nVidia Quadro FX 350M
Driver: NVIDIA 270.41.06
OS: Linux 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop i686 [openSUSE 11.4 (i586)] + KDE 4.6.00 (4.6.0) "release 6"

The problem started with:
Driver: NVIDIA 260.19.44
OS: Linux 2.6.31.14-0.8.1-desktop i586 [openSUSE 11.2 (i586)] + KDE 4.3.5
and were absent with:
Driver: NVIDIA 260.19.44
OS: Linux 2.6.31.14-0.8.1-desktop i586 [openSUSE 11.2 (i586)] + KDE 4.3.5

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Login In 11.2 Using Own Kernel

Dec 10, 2009

Using the defaukt x86_64 kernel openSuSE 11.2 (uograded from 11.1) works fine.

I have compiled my own kernel using the 11.1 config with minor changes. Botting runs fine and looking at the boot.msg compared between the default and my own kernel I only see preloadtrace.ko module missing on my own kernel which I would not expect causing mthe problem.

After the boot I am unable to login on the X login screen, text console or ssh.

The X login hangs after I entered username/password. Th elogin box disaapears and the backgroundscreen remains.

On the text console (after stopping xwindows via CTRL-Backspace) I can enter the username but the password prompt will not appear.

On ssh, where I login via plublic key I will get a message that the key will be used for login and then the session hangs as well.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Login With Domain Account

Apr 14, 2010

I planned to use Squid on my W2k3 network, because I'm tired of ISA2k6.it's a factory in itself. So, I just installed a VM with OpenSuse 11.2 and joined it to my AD W2k3 domain. After correcting the clock problems, everything is running fine except a strange feature that I was not able to solve. After a reboot, I'm not able to login with a domain account. I enter the username/password, choose the domain then it the input fields become grey for 1-2 seconds then the password field is reset and nothing happens. The most strange part comes when you logon with the local root account. You login as root, then logoff and login with any domain account : works like a charm..

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Use Keyboard After Upgrade To 11.4?

Mar 16, 2011

A few days ago I upgraded my workstation from OpenSuse 11.2 to 11.4 and found that when I got to an X login screen I could not type anything though the mouse worked. If I went straight to a terminal, such as by booting to runlevel 3 the keyboard worked fine so I figured the problem was related to Xorg. I did some research on the web and tried various fixes, such as reloading the proprietary Nvidia drivers, trying the nouveau drivers, booting with the nomodeset option, as well as trying most of the suggestions in this excellent article: SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE. No of these solutions remedied the problem.

Eventually I looked closer into the new (at least compared to 11.2) configuration for xorg. If I used the xorg.conf.install file or used an earlier Nvidia-specific xorg.conf file the problem continued. After taking a closer look at /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-keytable.conf file I noticed all of the values for the options were blank, just "". I set XkbLayout to "us", started X and I had a functioning keyboard!

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Login After Replacing Hard Drive?

Jul 14, 2011

I am running OpenSuse 11.4 with Gnome3, with 2 hard drives. One is for the system and has three partitions - root, swap, and home. The second is only data storage. Last week I started getting popups stating I had a hard drive going bad. I checked SMART status in disk utility and had several bad sectors on the system drive, so I cloned the drive to a new one with Clonezilla. Here is where everything went kooky. When I booted the new disk I had a ton of errors at boot along the lines of unable to find a drive. Upon closer inspection I realized the the system located the drives by device id instead of the traditional /dev/sdx. So I started playing with grub settings but never could get it to stop looking for the old hdd. Next, I popped in my net install disc and found I could do an upgrade install which proceeded normally. When I rebooted, no more boot errors, but I get to the black screen with spinning cursor and it will not proceed any further, I even let it run overnight and when I woke up, spinning cursor. As for troubleshooting, I was able to CTRL+ALT+F2 to a console and log in as root successfully but not as a user. When I try to log in as a user, I enter my username, then password, the "have a lot of fun" flashes by quickly and I am returned to a login prompt. I logged in to the console as root and created a new user and tried logging in again, but same thing. I am able to do an ls -l on /home/mike and all my files are there and the listed permissions look ok. I am at a loss as to what to try next. My old hdd will still boot, I just pulled it to reduce risk af data loss. I have never used auto yast before but I always see the prompt for it during an install. Can I clone the system with auto yast on to a different hard drive. Does it strip the by-device-id from the image? Which logs should I check?

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Mount Drives After Upgrade

Jan 10, 2011

I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3, everything seems to be working fine except that my other hard disk partitions are un mountable as my normal user. I used to be able to click on the drive in Dolphin and it would ask for the root password to mount it, but now it gives the error that the action is denied by org.freedesktop.hal.storage.mount-fixed auth_admin_keep_always <-- (action, result) What do I do to fixed this? I have checked as many settings as I can and can't find it. I would like to avoid editing the Policykit.conf file manually if possible (if that even is the right file).

OpenSUSE Install :: Install A Recent Kernel And Then Compile Some Variations?

Jan 25, 2011

I'm running 11.2 with standard repositories (plus packman). I want to install a recent kernel and then compile some variations of it (to investigate a hardware problem).

So I took these steps:

(1) add the 11.2 Kernel:/HEAD repository
(2) enable multiversion in zypp.conf
(3) use YaST software management to select the kernel development pattern

Note that at the moment, the standard 11.2 kernel ( 2.6.31.14-0.6-desktop) is in use and I have not selected any packages from HEAD. But it has installed 2.6.37-41.1 versions of all the kernel packages I didn't already have (source & docs etc) instead of the 2.6.31 versions. /usr/src/linux symlinks to linux-2.6.37-41 instead of to a directory for the running kernel!

(1) it should have loaded the packages corresponding to the running kernel
(2) it's not supposed to switch repositories

OpenSUSE Install :: Upgrading Xen Guest From 11.0 To Recent Version?

Oct 5, 2010

I have been trying for the last couple of days to upgrade a Xen guest running on Xen Server 5.5 from 11.0 to a more recent version. I have tried both 11.3 and 11.1. The upgrade seems to take, but it fails on the initial boot. It seems that it is expecting the root partition to be on /dev/sda2 - however I believe it is supposed to be /dev/xvda2. Initially when fstab had /dev/xvda2 I had a warning, so I changed fstab through yast to use the drives uuid. I've also tried zypper dup - but that gave all sorts of dependency errors. For kicks, I thought I might try 11.4 next. Am I out of luck and should just go with a fresh install?

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Re-load Grub Following Windows 7 SP1 Upgrade On Dual-Boot?

Apr 28, 2011

A few days ago I went to perform the Service Pack 1 Upgrade for Win 7. This crashed out with an error. On researching the problem I found a solution to fix the problem by marking the Windows partition as active. I did this (via Computer Mgmt -> Disk Mgmt). This allowed the SP1 upgrade to work, however on reboot I got an error BOOTMGR missing. This I rather rashly resolved by using the Windows 7 install DVD in Recovery mode to reinstall the Windows Boot manager via bootrec /Fixboot I thought I would then be able to use the Opensuse 11.2 install disk to fix grub.

I use the Opensuse install disk and select Repair system -> Expert Mode -> Install New Boot Loader then select Other -> Reread Configuration from Disk. This adds Win 7 back into the grub menu. I then select OK and get the message "the bootloader was installed successfully". The problem then comes when I click my way through OK and Next to finish the install. At the end of the process I get the message "An error occurred during the installation" and I'm no further forward.

FYI the PC has a single SATA disk installed partitioned as follows:

dev/sda1 100Mb Win System Parkition
dev/sda2 Windows NTFS
dev/sda3 Windows FAT

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Upgrade To 11.4: Can't Resolve Host / Error Code: Connection Failed?

Apr 1, 2011

I'm currently running 11.3 and decided I'd try upgrading to 11.4 following the instructions here: SDB:System upgrade - openSUSEUnfortunately, my attempts are defeated at the point of trying to refresh the new repos; I get the following message (for the oss repo, in this case):

Download (curl) error for 'url':
Error code: Connection failed
Error message: Couldn't resolve host 'download.opensuse.org'

With 11.4 replaced by 11.3 in the repo url, it refreshes just fine. The only repository that works when I change 11.3 to 11.4 is the Packman repo. I'm not really sure why the connection fails for 11.4 but not 11.3!

Further info: I have an old router with no IPv6 support, but have IPv6 disabled system-wide. I can enter the url for the repositories into firefox and they come up just fine - it's only with zypper/YaST that I get the above error message.I also tried upgrading using the network CD but ran into the same sort of problem. In this case it may be because the CD installer doesn't disable IPv6. (I didn't want to download the DVD at my connection speed, and the KDE live CD is not listed as suitable for upgrade).

Does installing the packages automatically install grub (ubuntu-grub, that is) to the (insert word for that first part of the HD where the bootloader resides....?) Or will I have to manually tweak the package installation to avoid installing?

Unable to mount (DVD name) DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already pending I recently upgraded to 9.04. Installed medibuntu, ect, but still have this problem. I did not have the problem when I was using Hardy. The DVD I used yesterday was named "TNGS3D1", and though it showed up under places, clicking on the icon (right or left clicks) gave me the message above. Restarting and manually ejecting the DVD did nothing for it. I was able to finally mount the DVD yesterday, and operate it properly, after having this probem for several hours. I don't know why it suddenly worked, or why it doesn't now.

After using the DVD, I unmounted the icon on the desktop, but it is still listed under places. Today, I went to use another DVD, called "TNGS3D2". Again, it is listed under places, but it does not show up on the desktop. clicking on the icon just gives me the message again. Actually, now that I've typed all this, it's shown up on the desktop and works properly. (after approx. 20 min since closing the DVD tray) Is it jut slow? What can I do to fix all this? Why is yesterday's DVD still listed under places?

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.4 Wireless Has Stopped Working Since A Recent Upgrade

Jul 9, 2010

Like many others it seems, my wireless has stopped working since a recent upgrade The answer does not lie in analysis of logs, settings etc. but surely with those who did it - they should provide a fix. I cannot believe everyone expects each individual users to go into their own analysis of why this is no longer working as it is clearly widespread. I have been using Ubuntu for 18 months without this problem on the same dual-boot laptop, and it still works on Windows as before, only Ubuntu 10.4 has recently stopped my network card from working.

I need to know when this will be fixed. I have been embarrassed by promoting Ubuntu to many colleagues who now also cannot work at home on their wireless networks. Seriously disillusioned I may start looking for a more stable alternative to Windows.
