Fedora Hardware :: No Sound Since Recent Update On F12 & Upgrade To F13

May 29, 2010

I have had no sound on my thinkpad x40 for a week now, first with f12 and now with f13. Under f12 I had sound until about 5/26/2010. I first noticed I had lost sound after some updates around that date. After not being able to solve the problem, I upgraded to f13, but still no sound.

pulsesound seems to be working. If I run pavucontrol and go to the playback tab, and then run paplay /usr/share/sounds/k3b_success1.wav from a console, it registers on the pavucontrol tab, but I hear nothing. kmix shows nothing muted. alsamixer shows nothing muted. pavucontrol shows nothing muted.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound Since Recent Kernel Update?

Aug 20, 2010

Today, I installed the recent kernel security update (i.e. 2.6.32-24-generic #41-Ubuntu SMP). After a reboot, the sound is gone.

From my user account:
mpc@awd:~$ alsamixer
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory

Same problem with "aumix".

However, the commands "sudo alsamixer" and "sudo aumix" seem to work (but still no sound).

"lsmod | grep snd" will give
snd_hda_codec_atihdmi 2367 1
snd_hda_codec_realtek 203310 1
snd_hda_intel 21941 0

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound And Video After Recent Update?

Aug 8, 2011

After recent upgrade which contained the newer kernel ( 2.6.35-30-generic). I've started to experience problems with sound and video in programs - deadbeef and totem. Both of them dont play any sounds and video in totem is skipping every 3-4 seconds (the same applies to flash videos in browser).

As I run deadbeef from the command line I dont get any significant information. I run ubuntu 10.10 amd 64. I tried to reinstal gstreamer my programs and codecs with no luck.

SUSE / Novell :: No Sound For Most Things After Recent Update & Warp Speed For Video And Audio

Sep 2, 2010

I have recently installed 11.3 onto a computer I just dropped a new mobo/cpu/memory into. At first everything worked great! (minus a few video streaming issues...but that is for a later date) Then, a few days ago, I let it do an update. Boy to I feel stupid now. I guess if it ain't broke..... So, now I don't have sound in the browsers or for the video players...such as xine. I do however still have sound with Amarok and system sounds when it boots up.

I have deleted the sound device in Yast and let it re-install several times. I tried different setting there as well. Checked and rechecked then checked again the mixer settings. Made sure my group settings included audio...just in case. Now Amarok and the online video play at warp speed, and only Amarok gives me sound....garbled...but sound. The system keeps telling me when I reboot that "one or more sound devices were removed" and wants to know if I want it to ignore them from now on. I've answered yes and no several times.I've also tried updated the alsa drivers in the software management of Yast. Can someone please help me before my wife gets mad at me for converting this computer to Linux?

Here is some information.

Password:

The "Warp Speed" for the video and audio was resolved after removing and then re-installing the audio driver and a quick reboot. But for some reason I had to reboot yet again to get the internet connection working again. This has happened to me a couple of times now. Also, when I try to adjust the Pulseaudio config under "other"in the audio config of Yast,it says it is not installed. When I try to install, it has a conflict with another program.

Fedora :: Recent Kernel Update Won't Boot ?

Aug 10, 2009

The girlfriend did an update a few nights ago. Besides removing her NVidia drivers, it also installed kernel version 2.6.27.29-170.2.78.fc10.i686.

That kernel was causing problems. Now it won't boot at all. How do we remove that kernel altogether?

If we remove it, would simply doing another update from the previous (still working) kernel just try to reinstall that bad kernel?

Fedora :: After Recent Update Of F11 Qjackctl Not Working

Dec 4, 2009

Yesterday I ran an update on my Acer Aspire One, which I operate under Fedora11. Amongst the updates was also an update for Qjackctl and the jack audio connection kit. After the update I could not start Qjackctl anymore and all my possibilities with rosegarden and my USB keyboard and fluidsynth were gone. I restored to the system before update ran the update again excluding the two packages concerning jack. Perfect, it works again. So it seems that there is a bug inbedded in the update. By the way, I am quite happy with Qjackctl as the connection tool between my various music making options, which are not very fancy, but I enjoy them. Despite comments in other parts of this forum Qjackctl works very well on the Atom based AAO. I have a kind of protocol of the failure of qjackctl and what I did. I can make that available if necessary

Fedora :: Missing Nvidia.ko After Recent Update

Sep 11, 2010

When I install the most recent Linux Kernel: kernel-2.6.34.6-54.fc13 (i686) The installation process removes: Linux Kernel: kernel-2.6.33.6-147.2.4.fc13 (i686) Plus NVIDIA: kmod-nvidia-2.6.33.6-147.2.4.fc13.i686-1:195.36.31-1.fc13.2 (i686)

This results in Nvidia.ko not being found during the subsequent restart - the remove activity deletes it from the system. Prior to this activity Nvidia.ko is found in: /lib/modules/2.6.33.6-147.2.4.fc13.i696/extra/nvidia. Without Nvidia.ko the display is set to 800x600 resolution. This is the first time I have encountered this problem with a Fedora Linux Kernel update. Will this problem be fixed in a subsequent update, if so when? If not fixed, where do we find the proper Nvidia.ko module? Also, how do you recommend we install it?

Fedora X86/64bit :: Cannot Complete Boot After Most Recent Update

Apr 26, 2009

Just did the most recent set of updates late yesterday (kernel and Nvidia). Since the update I cannot get to a login screen - just blinking cursor. In fact the cursor blinks for a bit then disapears only to reappear as if there are repeated attempts to complete a process unsuccessfully.

The update replaced the xorg.conf. I tied a couple of revisions, inlcuding replacing it with the earlier working xorg.conf. No luck.

Hardware is MSI K9N6GM board with Nvidia Geforce 6100 nforce 430.

Fedora Hardware :: WLAN Not Working After A Recent Update

Wifi not working means there is no wireless option in the network settings and the wifi indicator light is off.. when wifi started working both of these got fixed

Now i did a yum update yesterday, after which my wifi has stopped working again. No use of reinstalling broadcom-wl, akmod-wl, or even kmod-wl...

Ubuntu :: Cannot Use Touchpad After Most Recent Update

This seems to be a software bug after the latest update. Is there any way I can regress to a previous version? Perhaps uninstall the recently updated software?

Ubuntu :: Recent Upgrade Requires GRUB?

When I installed lucid, I opted not to install GRUB as I leave that job to a small 'rescue' Arch Linux install somewhere else on the drive. However, some recent upgrade (I'm having difficulty figuring out which one exactly) claims to require the packages 'grub-pc' and 'grub-common'.

I'm not sure but surely this is a mistake. Right? And if so, what are my options? Does installing the packages automatically install grub (ubuntu-grub, that is) to the (insert word for that first part of the HD where the bootloader resides....?) Or will I have to manually tweak the package installation to avoid installing?

Debian :: Awn Applets Do Not Work After Recent Update

Aug 19, 2011

I have been dsitro skipping around. Reinstalling the new versions every six months, only to find more major drawbacks recently with ubuntu. I fixed a major problem with adobe flash being majorly slow on my hardware by following the debian flash guide, what a life saver. I now love my linux system, flash was always a pain, made me appreciate windows. I thought I might try a rolling release distro (PCLinuxos is pretty good but I couldn't install office in wine). I heard about the speed of debian - the mother of all distros. But when I tried debian stable, I had hard crashes so I decided to try Wheezy instead.

Now I seem to be sitting pretty. With one exception, the latest 0.41 update of the AWN window manager breaks the awn applets. I have locked the version at 0.4 by going back to the stable branch that worked. But I would rather not have to check to see if the next updates is going to break them again. There were some more updates recently to awn-applets not sure if they fixed this problem. Why was this update released in the first place, when it breaks down awn almost completely ? without the applets it's almost useless. It's probably something simple like changing the directory but still annoying.

Ubuntu :: Grub After Recent Lucid Update?

Aug 5, 2010

I've done my due diligence, but I'm tired and frustrated so my googlefu probably isn't up to par at the moment! Been running Ubuntu as my main OS for about a year now, and have been really happy with it. So far I've been able to find solutions to every problem I've had, but I think this one's got me a bit out of my depth. I REALLY don't want to have to reinstall, I'm currently running Lucid as the only OS on this machine, and about an hour ago I installed the most recent updates as provided by the update manager. On reboot, it stopped at a GRUB command line.

I've managed to boot back into Ubuntu by manually loading the linux module etc. and booting. From there I've tried updating grub, and reinstalling grub (No errors on reinstall) but nothing persists. I've taken a quick look at the grub.cfg, but TBH I'm not sure what I'm looking for! [edit] FWIW, I have GRUB 1.981ubuntu7 installed

Ubuntu :: Unable Boot After A Recent Update

Jan 6, 2011

I've been running ubuntu on multiple computers for about 8 months now, installed on one computer as it's only OS (XP ran too slowly), and as a side OS for two others, one running XP and one running 7.The problem is, Ubuntu recently stopped booting on my Windows 7 computer. The option shows at start-up, but when I select it, the computer restarts back to the boot menu. I had recently installed an update from Update Manager that required a Restart, so when I restarted it to finish installing I left it to have dinner and it restarted into windows.About a day later, I wanted to boot ubuntu again, but my computer simply restarted, and has been doing this since (it's been about 3 days). I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but the last thing I installed before the update was a 1st person shooter game, I can't remember the name, but the icon was a "ka" symbol in katakana.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.2 - Recent Upgrade Of NVidia Driver?

Jun 19, 2011

I'm using a Dell Precision M65 portable workstation, often plugged to a docking station and with an external monitor attached. The graphic card is an nVidia Quadro FX 350M. I've been using openSUSE 11.2 until recently (with KDE 4.3.5). Then, during a routine update, the nVidia driver was upgraded from version 260.19.44 to 270.41.06. Desktop effects stopped working, and even after disabling them, some applications (presumably relying on direct rendering) do not work properly. I decided then to install openSUSE 11.4. The problems remain, with the additional issue that I can't switch anymore between the external monitor and the laptop display. I've tried several options using nvidia-settings; the original configuration when the system was working was "TwinView", "Cloned".

Direct rendering is still on:
Code:
phoebe:~ # glxinfo | grep -i rendering
direct rendering: Yes
but glxgears, for instance, while giving very high FPS, produces only a black window instead of the usual rotating gears.

The problem seems similar to the one cited here:
openSUSE:Most annoying bugs 11.4 - openSUSE
However, in my case, it appears with a driver newer than 270.29, so I am not sure this is the same issue. I also tried to follow the advices given here:
SDB:NVIDIA troubleshooting - openSUSE
without success.

I also noticed that my card (Quadro FX 350M) is no longer in the list of supported cards for that driver (the closest I could find is Quadro FX 360). But, again, it may not be relevant for this issue. So, at this stage I'm considering downgrading to the previous version of the driver (260.19.44). Before doing that, however, I thought to check for configuring options I may have missed.

Summary of HW/SW:
Model: Dell Precision M65
CPU: Intel Core2 CPU T7200 @ 2.00GHz
Graphic Card: nVidia Quadro FX 350M
Driver: NVIDIA 270.41.06
OS: Linux 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop i686 [openSUSE 11.4 (i586)] + KDE 4.6.00 (4.6.0) "release 6"

The problem started with:
Driver: NVIDIA 260.19.44
OS: Linux 2.6.31.14-0.8.1-desktop i586 [openSUSE 11.2 (i586)] + KDE 4.3.5
and were absent with:
Driver: NVIDIA 260.19.44
OS: Linux 2.6.31.14-0.8.1-desktop i586 [openSUSE 11.2 (i586)] + KDE 4.3.5

Hardware :: DVD / CDs Won't Mount After Recent Upgrade To 9.04 DBus Error

Feb 11, 2010

Unable to mount (DVD name) DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already pending I recently upgraded to 9.04. Installed medibuntu, ect, but still have this problem. I did not have the problem when I was using Hardy. The DVD I used yesterday was named "TNGS3D1", and though it showed up under places, clicking on the icon (right or left clicks) gave me the message above. Restarting and manually ejecting the DVD did nothing for it. I was able to finally mount the DVD yesterday, and operate it properly, after having this probem for several hours. I don't know why it suddenly worked, or why it doesn't now.

After using the DVD, I unmounted the icon on the desktop, but it is still listed under places. Today, I went to use another DVD, called "TNGS3D2". Again, it is listed under places, but it does not show up on the desktop. clicking on the icon just gives me the message again. Actually, now that I've typed all this, it's shown up on the desktop and works properly. (after approx. 20 min since closing the DVD tray) Is it jut slow? What can I do to fix all this? Why is yesterday's DVD still listed under places?
