Now every time I try to login, the screen goes black & crashes back to the login screen again. I just want to get the desktop effects turned off & switch it back to standard settings...actually this setting is done in root user so i must hv to open it...i tried using FailSafe but after login it doesn't crash back to login screen bt screen also doesn't show anything it stays a WHITE high bright Screen...i just started using linux distributions so please help me by giving solution in detail.runtime level is 5 at login time i also tried it with 3.

1. usb_modswitch
2. usb_modswitch.data
3. wvdial
After that I tried to edit the /etc/wvdial.conf to put the [Dialer cdma] details.it asks for root access. I have tried to gain it from terminal used command

which i have used throughout the installation. stiil it says login invalid I need to get it work because i cannot edit any file from gedit and i cannot get on the net so for every tutorial which i want to see i need to reboot the system login to win 7 then save page as HTML return to Fedora and try to get it done Still it fails as i dont hav root access....
When Desktop Effects are enabled in KDE the window for Tecplot 'bleeds' through, as if ~40% transparent in various regions. Disabling desktop effects fixes this, however, I would like to keep them. Is there a way to disable desktop effects on a single window/application?

View 4 Replies View RelatedJust put 11.4, 32 bit on a system with an Intel D865 GLC motherboard and 865G built in graphics controller. While the install went OK it turns out that X is totally hosed. After fighting with things for a while and discovering that Sax2 had disappeared I poked at Google and discovered some other poor folks that have had similar issues with Intel video cards. Based on a suggestion for a doc in OpenSuse.org I edited the file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf
and added the line: Driver "intel" to it - after that things got better. Obviously the install process had not identified the video card correctly. I'm now left with another issue - while the system now identifies the driver and can talk to the monitor correctly, a Samsung S23A350H I can't open a window after X comes up and I login - basically the same issue as the unresolved Bug 673873: [Bug 673873] intel [865G] Windows flash rapidly or don't appear if Desktop Effects are on in KDE and GNOME
The workaround is to turn Desktop Effects off but since X doesn't work I can't figure out how to do that. I can't find the gnome-xgl-switch or a xgl-switch that used to exist to do it on the command line so that's out. Someone said you could drop the empty file "disable-compiz" in the ~/.config/compiz directory and that would do it but in 11.4 that directory doesn't exist. how to disable "Desktop Effects"/XGL/compiz or whatever it is now called on the command line in OpenSuse 11.4 without a gui if that is still possible?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI successfully Installed nvidia graphics driver version 173.14.12 for Geforce FX5200 on Mandriva 2008 (It couldn't find a precompiled header, so built the driver against devel) .
It worked OK, everything became faster(than not having a driver) and OpenGL games were acceptable too.
Then I enabled 3D desktop effects (to it's medium level), it said it should log off, it did and restarted X server and then (autologin) Gnome didn't come. It's the screen in loading desktop, and cursor shows "working in background"(busy but shows the cursor itself too).
I'm not very interested in 3D effects, I just wanted to see how it is, now I want to know how to get it back.
I tried to go through Alt+Ctrl+F1 and close the program supposed to do 3D effects, or restart to runlevel 3 and change XF86Config but nothing seemed relative to 3D effects.
Im trying out popular distros running on Gnome.. to see possible installation candidate And having one problem with OpenSUSE 11.3 Gnome out of the box...I can not enable desktop effects.. it says it can not be done on my hardware configuration...My hardware: AMD Athlon 64bit 3000+, Ati Radeon X600 256MB, 2GB DDR2, 160GB HDD...In every other distro I tried from live CD.. I could enable desktop effects.Now I have tried update in that live session.. and when gone to that software application it asked and I downloaded 130Mb of software.flash player..etc... but I still did not have desktop effects... So my question is can it be done with my configuration... Works fine in ubuntu with Open drivers (radeon)...I would really like to make it possible on live CD.. because I dont wanna install and then see that I can not enable it...I know that most driver manipulations need restart.. so live session can not do that...But can you say if I could even make it happen on Raden X600? No problems in Fedora, Ubuntu...

View 9 Replies View RelatedYesterday I got the wireless up in running in my Macbook Pro 4,1 but still have no sound, the keyboard isn't fully supported (volume controls, brightness, ect.) and I haven't been able to get the eye-candy to work. I'm running openSUSE 11.2, and I've already installed the nVidia proprietary drivers, but every time I turn on desktop effects it turns it off as soon as I close the dialog box.

Tried to reinstall original nVidia drives, didn't helped.Also tried gnome desktop, snow begins after login.In vesa mode working fine 800x600, and I don't think that is related to video card, it should be big coincidence.
I have researched this particular problem for a couple of days now, and have explored some of the suggested solutions without success, other than learning much more about Linux. I am hoping someone can offer some good advice.I am working on a kiosk right now and as part of the application, I need to disable the Print Screen keyboard button. I have used 'xmodmap' to map keycode 111 to NoSymbol, but that is not stopping the Snapshot dialog from appearing. I am using OpenSuSE 10.3 with a GNOME desktop on an IBM PC with a Logitech USB keyboard. I have tried swapping the keyboard with a PS/2 keyboard to see if that was the problem, but it was not.
The strange thing is that when I use VNC 4.1.3 Free Edition to remote into this system from another IBM PC (Windows XP Pro OS), I am able to use the xmodmap -e "keycode 111 =NoSymbol" command to successfully prevent the Snapshot dialog from appearing.Is there some kind of keyboard mapping override or shortcut mapping going on here when I am logged into the Linux box locally, but is not happening remotely?

i have installed the new 11.2 OS, every thing went well until i switched on the desktop effect, when i clicked the apply button the whole system freezed, i had to manually switch of the system and re-started. everything went well until the username and password was entered, at the time of the progress bar the system dint respond, but the curser was moving but very slow moment was observed. i tried to repair the system with the repair system option, i tried repairing the file system i got the following error after pressing the help button
"error detected
the Ext4 file system of the partion /dev/sda6 is corrupted. to repair the file system, press repair"
and the second sda7 with the error "the Ext4 file system of the partion /dev/sda6 is corrupted. to repair the file system, press repair"
i pressed the repair button but nothing happen. and i even tried to re install the OS, the same problem exists.
been using 11.2 with KDE on a Sony laptop since 11.2 was released always ran perfect suddenly I can't login, I get to the login screen type in password it begins to load my desktop, then fails and dumps me back to the login screen I can login as root, all my stuff is there (under /home/me) I tried changing my password, no luck I went to run level 3 and there I can login just fine seems to be something with my KDE profile

this seemed to happen when I was running "blender" and making the machine do some heavy number crunching, it actually locked up.
In installation time I leave checked auto log in for the first created user. Now when the machine starts in automatically enter to first user account with the last used desktop environment. In does not prompt for log in, password, and desktop environment choose. When I want a second user, I must log out from the first created, and e log in as second. How can I now disable this option of the auto log in?

(As a solution to not being able login after checking the box I found that deleting kwinrc in .kde/share/config/ should help and it worked, so this is not a problem).

I am running F11 and want to spanky up my Gnome desktop a little by adding the desktop effects. When I try to enable it, my screen flickers then returns simply "unable to enable effects".I don't know where to go from here, I tried to google this but the 15 billions hits made me weep.One link seemed to provide some hope but after following the instructions, things went totally wrong and screwed up my X server; this could be because at first I didn't realise but a default install of F11 puts the PAE kernel on.

I don't know why this is as i had them working before. I am running the exact same version (9.04) and the desktop effects worked out of the box the last time. View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on my aspire 3000 and everything seemed to work just fine... until I tried to activate desktop effects. tu put it simple, it just don't work. I checked and doubled-checked the lsmod | head to make sure that my drivers (sisfb / sis_drv.so) were installed and loaded. they were. I then made sure that my pc was opengl-supporting (Glxinfo | grep "direct rendering". The answer was positive. With that in mind, I tried many different ways to run compiz(compiz --replace, appearance-desktop effect, run app-compiz) but neither if these gave any results.

Gnome desktop on Opensuse 11.2. It's more annoying that a big issue.
Whenever I logoff my workstation, I log back on and my desktop doesn't come back. Only the mouse pointer and the wallpaper show up. The panel and the shortcuts don't show. I have to power off using the power button, then power back on to fix.
