I would like to install Opensuse 11.4 on my macbook pro to do a triple boot. I found lots of tutorial on Ubuntu but not on Opensuse, and this facility is the same way?
View 3 RepliesI'm trying to Triple Boot my MacBook pro(Mac OS, Win 7, and opesSUSE).I installed Mac, Win, and openSUSE last.I have a few questions here:
1. Do I use GRUB or LILO?
2. Do I select "Root Partition in sda3"?
3. After installing the openSUSE, the rEFIt Menu become weird:
I enter Win selectioon, and then there's Grub selection again.
4. I enter Linux selection, and there's also Windows selection at the Grub.
5. Is my swap files working?
This is my first post to this forum! I'm just getting into openSUSE and really excited to get involved in it. I have a MacBook running OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) that I triple booted using Disk Utility. I installed openSUSE, (not WFindows yet), and have it set up to load using reFIT. reFIT can see that openSUSE is installed, but when I choose to load it it displays the following error message:
"No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" I have the feeling there is something very simple I'm doing wrong I know this post isn't extremely detailed to please let me know whatever other information I should provide.
I am having problems with triple booting my system. The original Linux OS I started out with was Ubuntu, which I was able to triple boot in the desired configuration (Mac OSX, Unbuntu, and Windows XP) after several tries (the instructions I got weren't quite right). I am now trying to install openSUSE instead of Ubuntu. However, if I install openSUSE before Windows XP, Windows XP erases my installation. If I install it afterwards, it seems to erase Windows XP, as it becomes unbootable thereafter. Perhaps this is because I am following the instructions for installing Ubuntu (format partition 3 as Ext3, mount it as /, and install the grub boot loader inside that partition), without modifying much else. I can't seem to find any good instructions online to tell me what else to do.
the instructions on installing Ubuntu screwed up because it said I had to install Windows XP first, before installing Ubuntu. I found out it was the other way around. Also, while Ubuntu was installed, all three partitions showed up on disk utility (although the Linux partition wasn't a recognized file system). However, every time I've installed openSUSE, where the partition should have been showed up as empty space on disk utility.
does anyone know that if i can boot from an external hard drive with "openSUSE" installed on it?
how about FireWire, will it work?

I Currently have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 on dual boot system, but I want to change that. I want Win 7, openSuse 11.3 and Ubuntu 10.10 on a triple Boot. I have a 500gb sata hdd. The Rough Plan was to 150gb for Win7, 150 for openSuse 11.3 (50gb for / and 100gb for /home) and same again for Ubuntu 10.10 and 50gb for Swap. I am using entire drive for 3 Operating Systems and Swap. I have read a few guides and they all say install win7 then opensuse then ubuntu, and thats fine but none say anything about partitioning. And one main problem is cant split into more than 4 different partitions.
View 3 Replies View RelatedOne my macbook pro I have previously had 11.1 and Kubuntu Lucid working (mostly) fine*. I tried 11.3 - the install went fine but now the machine will not boot from the HD. The only way I can get it to boot is via the CD. The best diagnosis I can make is that the installation screwed up the partition table such that I cannot make refit gptsync. Simple put the GPT/EFI partition table (which is required to boot the mac) is out of sync with the MBR partition table (required by grub to boot suse 11.3). I have tried various disk tools from OSX, refit and linux (parted) and none makes any difference (parted is ignorant of the problem, OSX disk tool doesn't know about linux partitions, bootcamp won't touch the disk and refit says "analysis inconclusive, won't touch this disk"). It looks like I am screwed and will have to reformat the disk before reverting to lucid.

Lucid - mostly everything worked except for an infuriating "krandr" type problem when using an external screen for presentation (krandr etc were turned off but the screen kept trying to resize during movies). sound ok, screen dimming ok, fn keys ok, trackpad ok, wireless ok. Transition

11.3 - no screen dimming, no fn keys, no wireless and won't boot, runs hot, short battery life.
I would like to triple boot my Macbook Pro. I don't want to use rEFIt. Although it worked on my iMac, it would randomly not load the OS's sometimes.
1. Is there a way to use Boot Camp?
2. I know how to use Mac with the windows xp bootloader. How can i put Ubuntu in too? I got this thing about taking 512 megabytes of the bootloader grub or something like that but I don't get it.

i ran it on the terminal after booting it from a Leopard installation DVD in a hope to run linux on my macbook(macbook white..intel m/c 160gb HD..2 GB RAM) after trying all the stuff and eventually everything has stopped booting neither leopard nor windows. i can see the grub for ubuntu loading up but after selecting the option for ubuntu, ubuntu is also not working.
i was using refit as well.i cannot even boot from my leopard installation dvd..windows that was priorly installed using bootcamp is corrupted too.
i'm currently dual booting windows xp and ubuntu with ubuntu installed first. is it possible to triple boot with opensuse 11.2?

I do not want to screw up my 'grub' as it's been trashed a couple of times recently and had to re-install everything, which went great with install setting up partitions. I am not sure where 'grub' is installed to. I did install Windows 7 first then let installer split hard drive in half to put Ubuntu on then while installing my second Ubuntu, I let installer split the Ubuntu partition in half, hence the 167 GB Windows and the 2 smaller partitions for Ubuntu.I was thinking to maybe let Debian install over my Maverick install. Would that work and not mess up my Grub and cause me to not be able to boot and have to fix the drama?
Here is my dilemma at first grub loads and I have this options:
1.ubuntu 9.04 with a new kernal (update via-- system update)
2.ubuntu 9.04 with old kernal
3.recovery
4.......
5.windows.
And inside windows there is another boot screen for
1.win-7
2.vista
Now I want to remove win-7 and install 10.04 in its place I want the safe/proper procedure to do it if there is already a thread like this then direct me there as I searched and did not get it.
I've got a mate that wants to put windows 7 dual boot with osx on his mac book pro. I have talked him into putting Ubuntu on as well I just don't know how and in what order. So what is the best way to do it? Any good websites/tutorials?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed from a live CD when it came to selecting the partition I re-sized the partition that Ubuntu was on because it was 68 gigs I shaved off 15 gigs for SUSE. Then I selected this new 15gig partition to install SUSE on, everything went fine with the installation I was tinkering around on SUSE but of course I needed internet access, so I go to get on Ubuntu where I had my file with my network key. I restarted expecting to see the usual GRUB boot-loader screen only now with an added option for SUSE. Instead I see an entirely new layout for the GRUB boot loader and all that is listed is SUSE, Failsafe SUSE, Windows XP, and Floppy. The Windows is my XP install and it loads fine sadly it is actually what I'm using now because it is the only thing left that I have my network key saved so I can get on this forum.
Looking on SUSE I notice that the 50gig partition formerly known as Ubuntu still exists I figure no problem add the partition back on to the boot-loader and I'm good to go. Added it and when I select to load it nothing happens it starts to then reverts back to the OS list. Does anyone A) Know how to resolve this or have any ideas. B) Think I can at least copy files off that 50 gig partition to an external hard drive.
Got a macbook pro, how do I get Opensuse install on it. Partition has already been made..

Now I am wondering if it is possible to add a partition and install Mac OS X Snow Leopard alongside Ubuntu, for dual boot purposes. I have seen a lot of documentation for doing this the other way around--adding a Ubuntu partition to an existing Mac OS X installation, but I haven't found an answer for adding OSX to existing Ubuntu. If anyone knows anything about this
View 4 Replies View Relatedi'm trying to install OpenSUSE 11.4 on a Macbook Pro 5,1 (later 2008). From boot menu i have chosen all the possible options, but i always get the same result.
I began choosing 1024x768 and standard kernel and i get a black screen. Reboot. I chose VESA and kernel with security adjust. Black screen, then reboot. Finally, i chose VESA and kernel with no-apic and the installation wizard loaded. I configured all and OpenSUSE began to install, but when it was finishing, the screen turned black.
This seems to be a variant of a problem many people have had, but after several hours trawling through various forums, I haven't seen a reliable match for my situation.In brief:Adding a third boot partition (of Ubuntu) to my existing dual boot of OSX 10.6 and Windows 7 seems to have crippled the Windows boot from working, because Grub apparently takes over the process. Yet Grub does *not* appear to be on the Windows partition.
More verbose:I have an older MacBook Pro (3.1, running Snow Leopard) that I recently refitted with a new 240GB SSD HD. With the extra space (it was previously only 120GB) I decided to add a dual boot with Windows 7 using bootcamp. This all went swimmingly well.Encouraged, I decided to follow this Lifehacker article's suggestion and triple-boot the machine with Ubuntu (I'd never used Linux before):So I now have the nice rEFIt boot partition selection screen, and, indeed, I'm up and running in Ubuntu, and enjoying it.
Only one problem: I can't get into Windows any more. If I try to go in through rEFIt *or* by holding down OPT at startup and selecting the windows partition directly, the result is the same: I get thrown into Grub's selector, and selecting the Windows partition from there leads to an error message and a dead end.Having read through numerous postings, I get the impression that Grub is doing something or living somewhere that it ought not to be, but in most cases I've seen, people had accidentally installed Grub onto the Windows partition (or indeed onto EVERY partition). I am too stupid to run a live Linux on a Macbook air. I used both, an openSUSE 11.3-KDE Live-CD and a Live-USB key and tried several boot options.
(i) I held down "C" to boot from CD → didn't work. It's an Apple CD drive but came with an older Macbook air a few years ago.
(ii) Found the bootmenu by holding down the option (ALT) key. Neither Live-CD nor Live-USB were shown. You can only choose the harddrive (and available wireless networks).
(iii) "Command-Shift-Option-Delete" to boot from an external drive didn't work either. I assume my USB key is an external drive, right?
I don't want to install openSUSE on the mac I just want to run a live system from time to time. Therefore I want to bypass Boot Camp or rEFIt and that's probably why I am stuck here. I wonder, if I really have to setup one of them to boot into a live system? The wiki article "openSUSE on a Mac" is under review right now.
I am trying to install OpenSuse 11.3 64-bit version on a Macbook Pro (5,4 firmware 1.8). The laptop will only run Linux and no OSX so I want to use the entire disk for OpenSuse. With that in mind, during install I switch to expert mode:
1. Delete all partitions
2. Create a new "msdos" partition table
3. Create sda1 as ext4, format and mount "/" on it
4. Create sda2 and assign it as swap partition
5. Continue the remaining install as normal.
After reboot, grub loads up but boot hangs at:
Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format
For context, I have tried Fedora and Ubuntu on this laptop and both hang at "Uncompression Error -- System halted" error. I ran memtest on the laptop and all LiveCDs run fine on it so that rules out hardware issues. My guess is that with Fedora and Ubuntu, both use grub2 and there is some complication with grub2. CentOS and OpenSuse seem to use grub and that gets me as far as loading the kernel but then boot hangs after initrd loading at the error above.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Computer, It came with Windows 7 64bit on it. I installed Ubuntu through WUBI. I used the Windows Disk Management program to resize my HDD. I shrunk the main drive and created a 20 gig free space. I installed WindowsXP on this 20g space. I had to change from AHCI to ATA. I started my new XP installation. As I should have expected my the screen that let me pick between Windows 7 and Ubuntu was gone, and it just said XP. Well thats cool. I get in XP use bcdeasy and use the install Win7 to mbr. So I restarted. Great I now I have Ubuntu and Win7... but no XP. So i think, okay, ill boot into Ubuntu, use the update grub command and XP will be there, so i do it and restart. No XP, So i try to boot into Win7 and see if i can do something in there.. No luck it says it can't boot and takes me to a startup recovery thing. Which, as Windows recovery things tend to do, doesn't find anything wrong. So I have Ubuntu now, which is great, but I do need Windows.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm currently on a work trip with my Asus G72GX laptop for non-work use (I'm posting from my work laptop). Yesterday, I accidentally booted into my laptop's recovery partition (from the Grub2 bootloader). Before I realized that that's what was happening, it booted into some kind of recovery program which ended up in an error. I restarted the laptop and couldn't get into the bootloader anymore. Now, the only thing that comes up is an error -- "error: unknown filesystem." Below that, it gives me the "grub rescue>" prompt. Most of the commands that sites list for grub rescue only return "Unknown command". ls works and lists all of my partitions: (hd0), (hd0,msdos, (hd0,msdos7), etc. down to msdos1. When I "ls (hd0,msdos" (etc, etc) it says "error: unknown filesystem."
I then started looking into booting from a Live Ubuntu USB drive. I've tried 11.04 and 10.04 now and they both do the same thing. I put them on an 8GB flash drive (only 1 at any given time) using Universal USB Installer and was able to get to the Ubuntu menu (Run Ubuntu from this USB, Install Ubuntu on a Hard Disk, etc.) If I try either "Run Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu", the screen flickers and comes right back to that menu.BTW, my 3 operating systems are: Windows 7 HP 64-bit, Mythbuntu 10.10 64-bit, and Windows XP 32-bit. Laptop hardware: Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz, 6GB RAM, Nvidia 8800 GTX video card.

Here's my set-up: I've got two 500GB hard drives, and a good amount of power to handle the OS's. I want to set-up Ubuntu as my main OS on a single hard drive. Then, I want to put XP and 7 on the second hard drive, side-by-side. Obviously, I would then want a bootloader to display an option at system start to pick either one.
The reason I want all these is for gaming mainly, and Netflix. I've got old games that only work on XP, and some newer games are coming out that I'm sure will run better on Windows 7 (Starcraft 2 is going to be amazing!). I found this documentation: [URL]. It's obviously for dual booting Windows and Ubuntu. My question is, can I triple boot Ubuntu, Windows XP and Windows 7? If so (and I'm positive I can) are there any good resources for the process?
just started a new gig and trying to push CentOS out as part of a triple boot option on our mac intels. i have done some google'ing but haven't come up with much. this would make the whole process 10X easier.

At this point I want to split my Windows partition and turn into the new user "Home" partition. I vaguely remember that there might have been some limitations with number of partitions regarding multiple boot schemes. Does anyone have an idea if there would be any problem if I go ahead and split my Windows partition and end up with 5 total partitions on this laptop?
