Debian :: Macbookpro, Triple Boot And Partioning?

I have a working system with triple boot (Macos, Debian and Windows Xp).I have total 4 partitions, EFI, Macos, Linux Ext3 and Windows Ntfs. At this point I want to split my Windows partition and turn into the new user "Home" partition. I vaguely remember that there might have been some limitations with number of partitions regarding multiple boot schemes. Does anyone have an idea if there would be any problem if I go ahead and split my Windows partition and end up with 5 total partitions on this laptop?

i recently attempted to dual boot windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10 on my toshiba satallite l50d5 laptop (which has had major problems booting/running ubuntu except for this latest release) anyways . i ran the live boot through a cd. saw that everything was running good and decided to dual boot . everything was fine until i got to the screen where it asked to put my name and password. it would not advance from there (it set trying to set up network time or something of that nature), i do not have internet access so im guessing that might have been a problem. anyways the installation wouldnt complete after HOURS so i decided to just turn off my computer. i booted it up again and windows loaded. i checked my windows drive and it was half of what it used to be (so the partioning worked i guess) but i cant get to my ubuntu partition. i see it when i go in through the live cd though but it doesnt give me the option to boot it when i turn it on normally. how do i get rid of the ubuntu partion or actualy allow it boot up?

I need to find the best way to triple boot XP Win7 and Debian, with Debian installed first on my laptop. VMWare, Wine and Cedega cant do what I need with how I run my laptop, which is equivalent to my portable laptop/workstation. Is there a partitioning tool in Debian that I can install to make a small partition for each? I also hace to set up GRUB instead of the Windows BL.

I recently bought a netbook on which Windows 7 Start Edition was installed. I partitioned the disk to install 2 other linux distributions : Backtrack 4 and Debian Lenny. Here is my partition scheme :

Partition table entries are not in disk order During both of the installs, I chose to install Grub. Unfortunately, when I start my netbook, it launches Windows 7 automatically and I do not see grub...

I have an HP Elitebook 8540w with 500gb hdd running win7.I plan to replace my blue-ray drive with an ssd using a hhd caddy. The problem is that i want to keep my first hdd (win7) as it is, and install on the new ssd 2 operating systems:win10 and debian 8.

Ubuntu - Natty - testing version - 65 GB
I do not want to screw up my 'grub' as it's been trashed a couple of times recently and had to re-install everything, which went great with install setting up partitions. I am not sure where 'grub' is installed to. I did install Windows 7 first then let installer split hard drive in half to put Ubuntu on then while installing my second Ubuntu, I let installer split the Ubuntu partition in half, hence the 167 GB Windows and the 2 smaller partitions for Ubuntu.I was thinking to maybe let Debian install over my Maverick install. Would that work and not mess up my Grub and cause me to not be able to boot and have to fix the drama?

Last night I installed ubuntu 10.10 unto a macbook pro 5,5 following the instruction from the MactelSupportTeamAppleIntelInstallation however I made a mistake during the installation process. I forgot to go into advance settings and choose to install the bootloader on /dev/sda3. I'm not exactly sure why this step was needed since everything was working fine anyways, but I was wondering how can I remove the bootloader from /dev/sda and install it on /dev/sda3 without breaking anything. I have a MacbookPro 5,1 with 2GBRAM, which successfully dual-boots with Ubuntu 9.04 since a year. I wish to urgently install ubuntustudio, and also wish to have one or perhaps two more partitions, where I may install the latest Ubuntu as well as another Linux distro.
Typically, think of a multi-boot scenario:
Mac OSX 10.5.x
Ubuntu 9.04 <<--working production install, not to be messed.
UbuntuStudio 10.4
Ubuntu 10.10 [just a few days left!]
Fedora or Knoppix or Debian.
if possible, i'd also like to keep one partition free and unallocated, or reformat a partition, if i ever need to install windows. any thing i'd need to watch out for in this? I've got no extra or free partitions, only free space on the mac partition, that i'd like to carve out and allocate to partitions. Also, before i begin, is there a way I can clone my entire mac+linux hard-disk so in the event of a failure i can get *everything* back, mac as well as ubuntu? I bought a hd of an identical size, but use it with Time Machine. I'd rather use it to clone the entire hd.

I'm trying to install Debian 6.0.1a on a MacBookPro5,5 (intel core 2 duo - EFI firmware). I have rEFIt 0.14 and a live cd of Debian (on a usb stick). I'm installing Debian on a usb stick. The installation process goes along smoothly, but then, it's impossible to boot up the freshly installed system (I get a black screen with a blinking cursor). I read that this is a common problem but all the solutions I have found have not worked for me.
The underlying idea is that since Macs have EFI firmware instead of a BIOS, the partition tables of devices are different (GPT for EFI versus MBR for BIOS), and grub is incompatible with GPT (I know there is an EFI version of grub but it is said to not work well). So the devices must have both a GPT partition table and a MBR one. These have to be "synced".
The tools available for this are:
- rEFIt can sync the partitions, but I haven't managed to have it sync them on any other device than the main hardrive. If I sync the main hardrive, then even the live cd (which is on a usb stick) won't boot (black screen with "GRUB _").
- Debian has a tool called gptsync, which returns a message saying "no data partition in gpt table, nothing to sync".
- Mac OS X has a tool called gptsync which returns a message saying "unknown partition type detected - I'm not touching this disc".
The reason there is no data partition is that gptsync sees my main partition as "EFI system". If I could change that, maybe I could sync the partition tables. Can that be done? Also, something I don't understand is: the live cd boots fine without grub. So why do I need grub? Couldn't the system boot up without it like the live cd does?

I have a Computer, It came with Windows 7 64bit on it. I installed Ubuntu through WUBI. I used the Windows Disk Management program to resize my HDD. I shrunk the main drive and created a 20 gig free space. I installed WindowsXP on this 20g space. I had to change from AHCI to ATA. I started my new XP installation. As I should have expected my the screen that let me pick between Windows 7 and Ubuntu was gone, and it just said XP. Well thats cool. I get in XP use bcdeasy and use the install Win7 to mbr. So I restarted. Great I now I have Ubuntu and Win7... but no XP. So i think, okay, ill boot into Ubuntu, use the update grub command and XP will be there, so i do it and restart. No XP, So i try to boot into Win7 and see if i can do something in there.. No luck it says it can't boot and takes me to a startup recovery thing. Which, as Windows recovery things tend to do, doesn't find anything wrong. So I have Ubuntu now, which is great, but I do need Windows.

I'm currently on a work trip with my Asus G72GX laptop for non-work use (I'm posting from my work laptop). Yesterday, I accidentally booted into my laptop's recovery partition (from the Grub2 bootloader). Before I realized that that's what was happening, it booted into some kind of recovery program which ended up in an error. I restarted the laptop and couldn't get into the bootloader anymore. Now, the only thing that comes up is an error -- "error: unknown filesystem." Below that, it gives me the "grub rescue>" prompt. Most of the commands that sites list for grub rescue only return "Unknown command". ls works and lists all of my partitions: (hd0), (hd0,msdos, (hd0,msdos7), etc. down to msdos1. When I "ls (hd0,msdos" (etc, etc) it says "error: unknown filesystem."
I then started looking into booting from a Live Ubuntu USB drive. I've tried 11.04 and 10.04 now and they both do the same thing. I put them on an 8GB flash drive (only 1 at any given time) using Universal USB Installer and was able to get to the Ubuntu menu (Run Ubuntu from this USB, Install Ubuntu on a Hard Disk, etc.) If I try either "Run Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu", the screen flickers and comes right back to that menu.BTW, my 3 operating systems are: Windows 7 HP 64-bit, Mythbuntu 10.10 64-bit, and Windows XP 32-bit. Laptop hardware: Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz, 6GB RAM, Nvidia 8800 GTX video card.

I had (and still do) a working dual-boot XP/Karmic (GRUB version 1.97 beta4). I shrank the Ubuntu partition and set up partitions and installed Debian 5.04. When I got to the point of installing GRUB, I told Debian to install grub to MBR. On rebooting, Ubuntu was not an option on the NEW (looked different) grub menu.Maybe it was GRUB2? Could boot to either XP or Debian though.
Thought easiest thing was to reinstall Ubuntu since it seems to "see" other OS's more reliably. So I did, and installed GRUB again during its install to MBR. Then, all three were in the GRUB menu (version 1.97 beta4 again), but when tried booting to Debian, got an error (forget the wording), but think it was because the partitions got renumbered when installing Ubuntu.
SO, reinstalled Debian, reformatting the partitions but not deleting them first so the numbering stayed the same. When got to the part for installing GRUB, I told it to skip (I got some kind of error that said "Install failed. This is a fatal error. You will have to boot with an external device..."), hoping now the current GRUB would work.
Now, all three were on the GRUB menu, but when I tried to boot Debian, I got "no such device" and a list of numbers/letters after it. And "press any key to continue", which takes you back to the GRUB menu (version 1.97 beta4, by the way).
O.K., did sudo update-grub in ubuntu and rebooted. Now, Debian 5.04 shows as last entry in GRUB, and choosing it starts a boot, which hangs at "Begin: Waiting for root file system....".
Waiting long enough at the "Waiting for root file system..." hang results in a series of notifications:
WARNING bootdevice may be renamed. Try root=dev/hda3
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
-Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
-Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
-Check root= (did the sytem wait for the right device?)
-Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/sda3 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
In Gparted, the partition with Debian root is hdc3, although on the GRUB menu it's listed as /dev/sda3. However, in Gparted the Windows partition is hdc1 and on GRUB it's /dev/sda1, and it boots fine.....
Is my Debian install just borked? Did telling it to skip installing a bootloader (I got some kind of error that said "Install failed. This is a fatal error. You will have to boot with an external device..." ruin it?
If skipping the bootloader install did ruin it, how do you install Debian without borking your current GRUB? That's what happened the first time.

I have the latest download of Ubuntu Server 10.04 installed. I have not installed a gui for it. I would like to be able to do this from command line if possible. I will be running this server headless but I would like to be able to login remotely if necessary. My hunch is I will need a gui to be able to log in remotely?
I have three Internal drives in my server. 80GB, ext4 formatted, this has the server os loaded on it. The other two drives are 160 and 500GB formatted ext4 as well but they are empty. I have two Ext USB drives with all my stuff I don't want to lose. Both are formatted NTFS. So I need help but keep in mind I am going to run the server headless, but would like to login remotely if necessary without a gui.
My other home computers will dual boot windows or linux, so I need to know what is the safest and best way to format the two drives in my server. ex4 or ntfs? Will I be able to run server without a gui as headless? I just installed Samba4 and starting down the learning curve by googling how to set it up.
My file sharing is simple. Nothing special within the Lan, but want to keep hackers out from the outside world. I use Logmein on my windows computers and may want to setup a remote login for the server at some point. Right now my big this is setting up the drives, shares, and going headless. I would like to be able to just turn the thing on and not worry about it.

setting up my new Laptop.
1st Drive = 90B SSD
2nd Drive = 500GB Sata
8GB = RAM
On my old system, I had one drive that was setup this way: 90GB drive will house all apps and system files, etc. 500GB would be for storage. like a huge /home. I looked at soem of the posts and I see people doing a /virt partition for their VM's. I do use a VM, but do not really understand the /virt partition setup... Definitely need help here. Need some guidance on how to best set this up. My plan is to clone the 90GB drive that will have ALL of my apps... If the 1st drive fails, I can just pop in another drive and not miss a beat...

I've decided to triple boot on my system, but I want to make sure it's feasible. Here's my set-up: I've got two 500GB hard drives, and a good amount of power to handle the OS's. I want to set-up Ubuntu as my main OS on a single hard drive. Then, I want to put XP and 7 on the second hard drive, side-by-side. Obviously, I would then want a bootloader to display an option at system start to pick either one.
The reason I want all these is for gaming mainly, and Netflix. I've got old games that only work on XP, and some newer games are coming out that I'm sure will run better on Windows 7 (Starcraft 2 is going to be amazing!). I found this documentation: [URL]. It's obviously for dual booting Windows and Ubuntu. My question is, can I triple boot Ubuntu, Windows XP and Windows 7? If so (and I'm positive I can) are there any good resources for the process?

I have a dual boot with vista on disk 0 and ubuntu on disk1. I just installed a disk 2 that I would like to use to try out other distros. Ubuntu is the only linux experience I have had. I'm really not very good at all of this, so my questions before I start loading another distro are:
1. Does Fedora use GRUB as its installer?
2. When I installed ubuntu on disk 1 (sdb1), the install was very simple. I chose sdb1 for the install, it loaded it, and when it was done I simply had the choice of which drive to boot into. Will installing Fedora on disk 2 (sdc1) be just as simple, or will I encounter steps I must take to make it so that I have a choice of which disk/OS to boot into?

I have Vista and F11 dual booted on my system. I wan't to resize Fedora(I think Vista has already been shrunk as far as It can) and install Debian as a third OS. Fedora takes up all the free space and I am only using a small amount of the partition. I am not sure of the best way to do this. Can I boot the Debian live cd and resize Fedora at the partion step? Or do I need to boot a live F11 cd, repartition and then boot the debian cd? Or is there a better way?

I am a linux newbie, I have messed with it some (backtrack) but I don't know a whole lot. I am going to networking security and I am in a linux class now. We are using fedora. On my laptop, I want to triple boot. Right now I have just 1 partition, with windows 7 ultimate x64 installed. I want to triple boot windows 7, windows xp x64, and fedora 12 x64. I am getting ready to format my laptop now with xp installing first. Then I will do windows 7, and then lastly fedora. Do I need to do anything special while installing fedora last? I have a 300gb hard drive, and I plan on having 100 for xp, 150 for 7, and the remainder for fedora.

I Currently have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 on dual boot system, but I want to change that. I want Win 7, openSuse 11.3 and Ubuntu 10.10 on a triple Boot. I have a 500gb sata hdd. The Rough Plan was to 150gb for Win7, 150 for openSuse 11.3 (50gb for / and 100gb for /home) and same again for Ubuntu 10.10 and 50gb for Swap. I am using entire drive for 3 Operating Systems and Swap. I have read a few guides and they all say install win7 then opensuse then ubuntu, and thats fine but none say anything about partitioning. And one main problem is cant split into more than 4 different partitions.

I have XP on sda1, Fedora 11 encrypted on sdb 1 (boot) and sdb 2 (root), I would like Ubuntu on sdc 1 (boot) sdc 2 (root). However when I tried to install from the cd the partition manager does not see my Fedora as an OS (I assume because it is encrypted). So my question is how can I achieve my triple boot without having to have my Fedora unencrypted. I want it encrypted for a reason.
Also I cancelled the installation for Ubuntu and it reverted to a Live cd and I tried to mount my Fedora encrypted drive. Ubuntu asked for the pass and when I entered it I get an error saying it cannot be mounted because it is not a mountable file system. This is not good for me because I would like to be able to access all my hdd's from both distro's.

I want to triple boot Windows 7, Ubuntu and Moblin/whatever other fast booting OS I come across. At the moment, I've got Windows 7 and Ubuntu there. I can make free space for Moblin, but how would I configure GRUB 2 so it reads it too?
Moblin does have a GRUB, but I'm presuming that its the legacy version, not GRUB 2. How would I get the Ubuntu GRUB back as the main bootloader if that were the case?
This is just planning, there will probably be more question springing to mind later on.
