OpenSUSE Hardware :: Why Does My Seagate Freeagent Not Show Up On The Desktop

Mar 31, 2011

I have a 3 year old Seagate Freeagent 80Gb harddisk and after installing Opensuse 11.4 yesterday would like to copy my backup documents into the laptop. So I plugged in both power usb cables to the laptop and it seems to be detected by the OS, but being a newbie to linux I do not know how to read the contents of my drive which is formatted in NTFS. Is it because of the NTFS that's why the harddisk does not show up?

I did a quick google and here is what I get while trying to dig for more info:

Hardware :: Cannot See Seagate FreeAgent Drive

May 31, 2010

I've searched around and found a lot of reports of people's FreeAgent drives randomly spinning down (and what to do about it), or for people who can see the drive but can't mount it. I have a different problem: I can't see the drive at all. I plug it in, andit makes a beeping noise for a while (think 'Defcon 4', but not as loud). Then, it stops, but nothing's happened. fdisk -l just shows my normal 4 partitions.I'm running Ubuntu (Karmic), and this is a 500 GB FreeAgent GO drive from Seagate (brand new, right out-of-the-box).

Ubuntu :: GRUB After Seagate FreeAgent Drive Was Used - PC Restart Itself

Mar 1, 2010

I have a dual boot PC with Windows Vista and Ubuntu 9.1. The problem did start with Ubuntu 9.04. I think the problem started around the same time I added a Seagate FreeAgent USB hard drive for backups. The GRUB OS list will come up after the PC boots. I can select Vista and it will start w/o a problem. If I try to boot to Ubuntu the PC will restart itself. It may try and start Ubuntu MANY times until it eventually gets started. I have tried to repair the problem with no results so far. I have tried it with and without the Seagate device attached.

I have seen a lot of threads here and on others forums about problems with these models. I have a regular seagate portable that works great. The threads are all 2009 and older, so I was wondering if anyone could confirm that the free agent go portable models work before I buy one. Especially with 11.3. I can get a 640GB for $99.

OpenSUSE :: Gnome: Disabling "show Desktop" Shortcut

Apr 9, 2010

I'm using Gnome on openSUSE 11.2. I can't get rid of the ctrl-alt-d keyboard shortcut in Gnome. I have set it to "disabled" in control center -> keyboard shortcuts, but no luck.

When I run the gnome-keybindings-properties program from the terminal it dumps these two messages onto stderr:

(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): keybinding-properties-WARNING **: No description for key '/apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/opacity_decrease_key'
(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): keybinding-properties-WARNING **: No description for key '/apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/opacity_increase_key'

and the following two messages like 20 or so times:

(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_store_append: assertion `VALID_ITER (parent, tree_store)' failed
(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_store_set_valist: assertion `VALID_ITER (iter, tree_store)' failed

I realize this isn't the most critical problem, but I am experimenting with Guile (scheme as a C extension language) which I am editing in Emacs, and even after reassigning "down-list" I keep hitting C-M-d because it's right by C-M-f which I also use constantly, and this minimizes all my windows! And there is nothing on my desktop, I never use the feature intentionally. Maybe I should get a wallpaper that says "HaHa Dummy!" or something of the sort to at least get a chuckle out of it when it happens.

Ubuntu :: How To Change Show Desktop Icon

Jun 17, 2010

I hate the purple "Show Desktop Icon" in Lucid and I finally figured out how to change it:
1) sudo apt-get install wmctrl
2) Create the following script and proceed as directed within the script's comments:
#!/bin/sh
# GLD's Show Desktop Button script. Here's how to do it.
# sudo apt-get install wmctrl
# Right click on the panel and select "Add To Panel".
# Choose "Custom Application Launcher".
# Use the file name of this script for the Command.
# Use whatever icon that you want. The generic Ubuntu Show_Desktop_Button icon is located here:
# /usr/share/gnome/help/user-guide/C/figures/show_desktop_button.png

if [ -f /tmp/toggle_show_desktop_$USER ]thenwmctrl -k off

Ubuntu :: Desktop Hidden Files / Show On Them?

Aug 13, 2010

I created an image and then saved it to my desktop as *.jpg

It doesn't show on my desktop anywhere. However, when I click to upload from my desktop to a website or to 'insert' and attachment in my email program and browse to my desktop, it shows that it is on my desktop and all works fine.

I have a feeling the * is the problem in the name and I would happily rename it if I could only get to it from my desktop but I cannot at all.

Any ideas how I can fix this?
