I have a need of a database, and the information to go into it. I know how I want to organise my data for optimal cross referencing, but what I know is merely what I know and I do not know if what I know is what is known...
Madness to say... looking at my database I see this is the best way to organise the data, but what I do not know is how the computer will respond to my methodical madness.
Is it quicker to have one table with many fields or many tables with few fields?
We've got information for 10 users with 17 idiosyncrasies.
So, would one table with 17 columns and 10 rows... or... a group of 50 tables with one column and 3 rows and one table with 4 columns and 5 rows...
Be more efficient concerning:
QUERIES...?
Searching?
Comparison?
Insertion?
Deletion?
Modification?
The queries and modifications will be daily, and constant. These numbers are really much larger but the math is easier for me to articulate on a smaller scale. I use Perl, php, and C with SQL for management.
I've been using Kubuntu 9.10 for several months now. For most of that time, I configured and used with no problem several network printers.. a HP LaserJet 3015 at home connected to a Windows machine, and a Xerox Phaser 8560 at my coworking space connected directly to a router.
However, several weeks ago I was at the coworking space, requested a print from my web browser, and in the printer selection dialog, observed the list of printers expanding... some sort of autodetection of network printers was occuring, and multiple instances of the same printer were being offered, with slightly different names. Printing to these devices did not work.
Now, after a reboot, there are NO network printers available no matter what network I'm connected to. When I use the Kubuntu printer configuration tool and try to set up a new printer, it asks me to "Select a connection" to which the only option it gives me is "Other". When I put in an address for the printer it just cycles endlessly, never finding anything.
I have a shared printer on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine, and it cannot be seen by other computers (macbook, pc) on the network. I have the printer shared, but it is not a member of the 'Shared Printers' group. When I add it to the 'Shared Printers' group, it stays there until I close the 'Printing' application GUI. Then, when I re-open 'Printing,' it is no longer in that group. I think this is why I can't see it on the network, due to the wording of the option in Server Settings to 'Publish shared printers connected to this system.'

View 9 Replies View RelatedStrangest thing happened today. I tried to print a simple text document from Kwrite and noticed it would not print. I tried it again selecting a different printer. No result. I tried copying the contents and pasting into Libre Office, then print...no printers to select...Odd. I decided to check on cupsd status from CLI. It was up. Here's where things get stranger. I open CUPS web manager and select printers...'No printers found' Okay, that's odd since I should have about 12, and they are showing up in Kwrite but not in LibreOffice nor CUPS manager.
Assuming Kwrite used some sort of cache I decided to check out /etc/cups/printers.conf....Hmmm zero byte file with but in the same directory a file printers.conf.O dated about 7 days ago. So I did an /etc/init.d/cups stop, did a cat printers.conf.O > printers.conf and /et c/init.d/cups start...all is back to normal. WTH?! What waxed all of my printers?
I have a little problem with my Samsung CLP-300 color laser printer (usb wired).Works as always, in opensuse (that means, nearly perfect, just color a bit problematic if printing in good quality).But since the upgrade (by means of zypper) to 11.3, in VirtualBox (not OSE, the one with USB support), the printer appears greyed (not the rest of USB devices), so that I cannot use it from the wndows inside VirtualBox (which is the only way to do a real high-quality printing).Does not seems to be a problem with VirtualBox (the resto of USB are properly detected and connected), but of any type of change that I cannot guess in the way udev manages the printer, so that this USB connection works in a different way from the rest (and from what it did in 11.2).That's why I post that here and not in software subsection. I think it's the proper place. If not, please, tell me.The dmesg output when I tur on the printer is the following one:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set my openSUSE desktop up to use the printers on my office network via Samba. I managed to get it working in 11.2 but 11.3 is giving me some trouble.I am able to access the printers and use them but I have to enter my network credentials each time I print. In 11.2 I was able to "save" my username/password and was not required to do this. Are there any Samba packages I need to add in addition to the basic ones? There seems to be a lack of documentation on this particular subject, most is concerning Windows clients printing on Linux print servers.

If it doesn't I suppose I'll have to download the entire ISO file, install the OS, and then have another couple hundred MB to download which is not what I'd prefer.

After upgrade to openSUSE 11.3-64 the figures dropped to about 25% of the previous values. After upgrade to KDE 4.5 and plasmoid-networkmanagement the initial values did not change but the average value dropped after about 30 seconds to ~ 15 kB/s. Approach so far:
1. The motherboard's (A780GM-LE) build in LAN (Realtek RLT8111DL) was originally detected by openSUSE 11.3 as the Realtek RLT8169 and kernel module r8169 installed. This was replaced by the latest module r8168-8.019.00 from Realtek.
2. After kernel update to Linux 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop x86_64 the plasmoid-networkmanagement was replace by NetworkManager-kde4. This improved flow with,
max : 140 kB/s
ave : ~ 80 kB/s
Ubuntu 64bit. The sound system works and plays noises correctly when I test the speakers in sound preferances. The internet BBCi player(Radio) plays sound correctly. Banshee & Rhythmbox try to play music files at double, or more, speed with no sound output. Spotify Linux version also tries to playback at double speed with no sound output. Media Player attempts to play music files at high speed. Media player plays the Video and audio tracks at high speed. VLC Will play the video at normal speed but with no audio.

How should I install my MySQL database to the new version? Do I perform a backup then restore to the new install? Or can I just save the mysql db files to a cd and somehow attach it to the new install?

I wanted to test out restoring the database, so on my test server I deleted the database and restored the .sql file to a new schema with the same name as the old. one. It appears to complete the process just fine. But I noticed that the number of rows for the restored database is slightly less than what was backed up.
Is this normal or should the numbers be exactly the same? It's only a difference of about 28 rows. I seem to be able to view the data just fine in the query tool.
As most of us are aware we have moved to a stable KDE repo url for all future updates. But how do I know what Repos are current? Is there a bulletin board I can check mine against?

If the data types of the relationship disagree, the program crashes. Also, the screen for establishing relationships is too small. I will probably need about 40 tables, and the Openoffice relationship map can realistically handle only about 12.
Apparently Access is up to the task of the development. Ultimately, I want to convert the developed database into a LAMP Web application. Also, I'm thinking of jobbing out much of the development. Is their an equivalent Linux-based solution, or should I hold my nose and go ahead with Access and Windows?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have OO.o 3.1.1.4 installed on my SuSE 11.2 system. (It came with it.)I've tried connecting to my older OO.o address book database and it seems to have connected (I get no error messages) but when I try to open the database source from within Writer, or any other OO.o tool (either by pressing F4 or going to View > Data Sources) OpenOffice crashes. I can open my database as an .ods or a .dbf or .odb.When I open it as an .odb, I end up with some sort of form wizard designer. All looks ok, the table is there (and it looks good!) but then what? If I close that wizard, the table then closes with it.
I've also used File > Templates > Address Book Source. After using that, if I hit F4, OOo crashes.My main problem is that OO.o crashes when I try to view the database source from within a document.P.S. I do have Java (Sun's version of Java 1.6.0) installed and OO.o seems to know it's there and is registered.
I would like to see fan-speed in my laptop. I have installed OpenSUSE11.2 with KDE4.3.4
I only find apps/plasmaoids that read temperatur, but not fan-speed. Does it exist?
How do I go about changing the fan speed? My laptop is running hotter than normal and although its not melting the case I'd rather turn the fan up to increase cooling if possible. Noise is not a concern as I normally have music playing anyway.

View 4 Replies View RelatedA month ago, my HP Mini 1035NR, with a Windows XP system died. Since then, it won't boot into Windows. I tried installing Ubuntu via a bootable USB with no luck. I have finally been able to create a working bootable USB running the Gnome version of Open Suse 11.3.
Aside from not picking up my ethernet connection to the Internet, my bigger issue is I can't install Open Suse from the USB. I get a message when I try to install that there may not be enough memory and it hangs at the section where you choose your time zone. I would like to install the latest version of Open Suse with KDE. Is there anything else I can do?
I have a strange problem which I've encountered for a long time but still weren't able to solve it. In openoffice writer, when clicking on extra->literature database the program immediately crashes. I encounter this problem with all the latest versions of Oo (3.2,3.1...) and on OpenSuse and on Kubuntu, so I guess it must be a widespread problem.
