Ubuntu :: Does OS Support USB Printers

Dec 29, 2010

Does Linux support USB Printers? I noticed under add printer it shows Lpt#1, Serial Port #1, Serial Port#2,Other and Network Printer but no USB. Is there something that needs to be installed to have USB Printer support? USB is the standard connection type of most printers theses days and only high end printers have Ethernet and I don't think any modern printer still uses a parallel or serial port.

Server :: Parallel Multiple Ssh Tool Pseudo Tty Support

Jan 24, 2011

I use mpssh or pssh to issue commands to multiple servers. Problem is that some of the commands require pseudo terminal and won't work with these tools. This will work just fine: "ssh -t user@server command" as stated under SSH man: -t = Force pseudo-tty allocation. This can be used to execute arbitrary screen-based programs on a remote machine, which can be very useful, e.g., when implementing menu services.

Multiple -t options force tty allocation, even if ssh has no local tty. So, is there a workaround for the above tools? Or is there any other tool for multi server administration that will work? If you are not sure what I am talking about just try executing "ssh user@server top" and "ssh -t user@server top" to know exactly the difference.

Ubuntu :: Canon All-in-one Laser Printers - No Officially Support?

Apr 6, 2011

I have found several people who have had problems with Canon all-in-one laser printers. I had huge problems when I first set mine up because it wasn't in Synaptic yet. There are threads on the forum addressing specific printers, but since the driver wasn't officially supported for very long I think lots of folks have given up the fight. My thought is that anyone who successfully installed a Canon laser should be able to post to this thread, and/or a link to threads on this or other forums which they found helpful in getting it to work.

The driver as it is shown in Ubuntu 10.10 is cndrvcups-ufr2-uk, and cndrvcups-common. I have a Canon ImageClass MF8050CN color networked laser which works perfectly with this driver. It supports the networking, although it takes a couple minutes to populate the list of printers when you're setting up. I have not tried the USB port since I have no use for that type of configuration. I have not tried scanning to the computer, only to the USB stick, which works fine.

Ubuntu :: Autodetection Of Network Printers Makes All Printers Disappear?

Jan 28, 2010

I've been using Kubuntu 9.10 for several months now. For most of that time, I configured and used with no problem several network printers.. a HP LaserJet 3015 at home connected to a Windows machine, and a Xerox Phaser 8560 at my coworking space connected directly to a router.

However, several weeks ago I was at the coworking space, requested a print from my web browser, and in the printer selection dialog, observed the list of printers expanding... some sort of autodetection of network printers was occuring, and multiple instances of the same printer were being offered, with slightly different names. Printing to these devices did not work.

Now, after a reboot, there are NO network printers available no matter what network I'm connected to. When I use the Kubuntu printer configuration tool and try to set up a new printer, it asks me to "Select a connection" to which the only option it gives me is "Other". When I put in an address for the printer it just cycles endlessly, never finding anything.

Ubuntu :: Printers Do Not Save In 'Shared Printers' Group?

Oct 9, 2010

I have a shared printer on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine, and it cannot be seen by other computers (macbook, pc) on the network. I have the printer shared, but it is not a member of the 'Shared Printers' group. When I add it to the 'Shared Printers' group, it stays there until I close the 'Printing' application GUI. Then, when I re-open 'Printing,' it is no longer in that group. I think this is why I can't see it on the network, due to the wording of the option in Server Settings to 'Publish shared printers connected to this system.'

OpenSUSE Install :: Current State Of Affairs With The UEFI/EFI Install Support On A Empty Hdd For X86_64?

Mar 21, 2010

I was thinking of trying out the UEFI support that HP has in my laptop BIOS in the next few days. My reasons is that I get a custom boot logo... and (hopefully) a better boot-speed. What is the current state of affairs with the openSuSE UEFI/EFI install support on a empty hdd for x86_64 does anyone know? (badly worded I apologize) This may seem naive but I have struggled to answer this with most posts being about Mac's for obvious reasons.

Specifically, Do I have to have any custom knowledge on formatting the HDD with a GPT partitions or does the installer do this for you? Secondly, How well does the UEFI bootloader tie in with the config tools in YaST2? (I would like to have UEFI but if it turns into some headache in setting up the boot area by hand each time the kernel updates I will forget it.) I can safely say this will be a machine with only openSuSE installed as an OS, no need for any others or any dual-boot problems. This isn't overly urgent and I will dedicate (at least) a whole weekend to tweaking once I buy a new disk and install openSuSE on it. If nobody knows then I will dive in head first and report how I find it and any problems (and severity).

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 Does Not Support Ip_pnp?

Jul 21, 2010

In OpenSuse 11.2 it was possible to pass the ip configuration on the kernel command line and the kernel would configure the interface (eth0 in my case) properly. The ifcfg-eth0 needed to be configured as 'static' and 'auto' with the other parameters absent. The kernel arg would look like: ip=<client-ip>:<server-ip>:<gw-ip>:etc:etc

This no longer works or works differently in OpenSuse 11.3, despite the fact that ip_pnp seems to be compiled into the kernel. Is there some way to enable this in 11.3? I just want to do basic static routing with the parameters passed directly to the kernel instead of hard-coded in the ifcfg-eth0.

p.s. in 11.3 when I try to do the ip_pnp method the eth0 does come up but none of the routing is correct. There is no default gateway and no ip is assigned even though I am passing the kernel args properly.

OpenSUSE :: 11.4 Printing - No Printers Found

Sep 7, 2011

Strangest thing happened today. I tried to print a simple text document from Kwrite and noticed it would not print. I tried it again selecting a different printer. No result. I tried copying the contents and pasting into Libre Office, then print...no printers to select...Odd. I decided to check on cupsd status from CLI. It was up. Here's where things get stranger. I open CUPS web manager and select printers...'No printers found' Okay, that's odd since I should have about 12, and they are showing up in Kwrite but not in LibreOffice nor CUPS manager.

Assuming Kwrite used some sort of cache I decided to check out /etc/cups/printers.conf....Hmmm zero byte file with but in the same directory a file printers.conf.O dated about 7 days ago. So I did an /etc/init.d/cups stop, did a cat printers.conf.O > printers.conf and /et c/init.d/cups start...all is back to normal. WTH?! What waxed all of my printers?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Parallel Port Printing Under 11.3

Oct 28, 2010

I have a Panasonic 3123 dot matrix printer which I am trying to get working on my Dell Vostro 420 running 11.3 (x64). Since Dell decided to eliminate on board parallel ports from their systems I've added one with a Startech PCI1PECP PCI card (uses a NETMOS NM9805CV chipset). I've confirmed that the printer works using an old laptop running Windows 2k with a LPT port running in ECP mode. When attached to my desktop the printer will (usually) shift the pin carriage etc when I perform a cold boot but will not respond when sent a test page in yast or cups (it is detected after a fashion and I have assigned the appropriate ppd from the Omni package).

The following is the relevant out put from lspci, lsmod and dmesg:

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Did Udev Changed In 11.3 For Printers?

Jul 26, 2010

I have a little problem with my Samsung CLP-300 color laser printer (usb wired).Works as always, in opensuse (that means, nearly perfect, just color a bit problematic if printing in good quality). But since the upgrade (by means of zypper) to 11.3, in VirtualBox (not OSE, the one with USB support), the printer appears greyed (not the rest of USB devices), so that I cannot use it from the wndows inside VirtualBox (which is the only way to do a real high-quality printing).Does not seems to be a problem with VirtualBox (the resto of USB are properly detected and connected), but of any type of change that I cannot guess in the way udev manages the printer, so that this USB connection works in a different way from the rest (and from what it did in 11.2).That's why I post that here and not in software subsection. I think it's the proper place. If not, please, tell me.The dmesg output when I tur on the printer is the following one:

[352074.297027] usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.3 - Unable To Find Parallel Port

Sep 28, 2010

openSUSE 11.3 question:
I have a PCI parallel port adapter (Syba SD-PEX-NM1P) that should "only" need to be told what ports and irq to use with parport_pc but, for the life of me, I can't make it happen. Using lspci -v, I can see it uses irq 19 (it that 19 or 0x19???) and ports 0xc800, 0xc400, 0xc000, 0xb800, 0xb400 (all 8 bit), and 0xb000 (16 bit). This is confirmed by the YaST2 hardware information tool.

Doing modprobe parport_pc io=0xb000 irq=0x19 should do something useful but I get no result at all. There is no /dev/lpt1 - a /dev/parport(n - where n is a digit) shows up on occasion but I can't figure out when it appears or why. cat foo >& /dev/parport(n) - where foo contains "hello world <FF>" doesn't do anything on the printer. Using the YaST2 printer tool, even the HP tool (the printer is an HP LJ-5P), is fruitless.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Configuring Parallel Port Scanner On 11.3

Dec 22, 2010

Just updated to Suse 11.3, in past versions, including 11.2 I could activate my Epson parallel scanner this way:

Modify this file removing the '#' form the line '#epson'
/etc/sane.d/dll.conf
Modify this file to indicate which port to use, like this:
/etc/sane.d/epson.conf
# epson.conf
# here are some examples for how to configure the EPSON backend
# SCSI scanner:
scsi EPSON
# for the GT-6500:
scsi "EPSON SC"
# Parallel port scanner:
#pio 0x278
pio 0x378
#pio 0x3BC

It doesn't work anymor, the parallel port is apparently active since I can do:
ls -l /dev/lp0
And I get:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12 Dec 22 19:51 /dev/lp0

OpenSUSE Install :: Multi Language Support - Define The Compose Key In 11.2?

Feb 13, 2010

I have been trying to upgrade (ended up trashing and reinstalling) from 11.1 to 11.2. I selected French language with UK keyboard. This option seems in the end to just default to the French keyboad. Reinstalled with UK lang and UK keyboad which is acceptable to me but I then find a big problem. How do I set the compose key so I can enter accented characters etc. ( ...) Prior to 11.2 this was some with SAX but SAX support for keyboards appears to have been removed and I believe should be provided by KDE, Gnome, etc.

Does anyone know how to define the compose key in 11.2? I have searched google and the suse forums but found nothing other than something in German that I did not understand. While I could buy a French or perhaps better a Swiss keyboard for the tower this is not a real option for the laptop and on-screen keyboards are useless.
