OpenSUSE Hardware :: KDE Not Showing Photo Camera Plugged With USB?
Jul 28, 2010
I've got a strange issue. I used without problem my Olmypus camera with oS 11.2 and older but sinds 11.3 and the new KDE, nothing happens anymore when I plug my camera: nothing appears in the device notifier, nor in Dolphin. It did in the past, with oS 11.2 and KDE 4.3.x. But, in IceWM, with Dolphin and Digikam it does work (it appears like a USB stick). Not in KDE with the same applications. What I wrote in the bug report:
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Plug your digital photo camera in a USB port
2.Optional: open Dolphin
Actual Results:
Nothing happens

I have a Canon S95 digital camera that used to work just fine. I plugged it in, the device notifier showed a couple of actions for it, I chose digiKam and downloaded the photos. Now I tried to get new photos out of the device, but it's not showing in the device notifier any more. DigiKam shows "Canon Inc. Canon Digital Camera (auto-detected)" but doesn't do anything when selecting it.
In dmesg I see:
[ 988.197025] usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 4
[ 988.313730] usb 1-3: New USB device found, idVendor=04a9, idProduct=3212
[ 988.313734] usb 1-3: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[ 988.313738] usb 1-3: Product: Canon Digital Camera
[ 988.313741] usb 1-3: Manufacturer: Canon Inc.
[ 988.313743] usb 1-3: SerialNumber: [number]
So it works but KDE doesn't seem to be able to notice it. I'm using openSuse 11.3 with KDE 4.6 RC1, and it might be that 4.6 betas/rc broke the functionality though I'm not sure.

I have this problem with my Canon powershot A630. I connected it to the computer via USB. Ubuntu detects it, ask me if i want to use nautilus or f-spot to see the pictures in the SD card (it says that there are photgraphs in the media), so i go for "open folder" option, and the window shows up totally empty. Te only file i see in the card is ".fir" extension wich i use for upgrading the camera firmware. I know there are pictures in the sd card because i can see them using the camera.

I need to be able to open a photo manager and scan directly from within the program without opening a separate app. Is there one that does? I just installed Mint on my daughters laptop. Wow! I'm impressed. I tried a some Linux distros a few years ago and although I liked the idea, I just couldn't find one that impressed me. Things have changed since then! I tried 2 or 3 distros this past week and they all beat the pants off any version of Win... that I've used. I'm so impressed that I am now considering installing on my machine if I can find software replacements. If not, I may still do it and run Virtualbox when I need to. I need to start with the photo manager.

I lately bought a Logitec c200 webcam, which seems to be interfacing quite well with my ubuntu 9.10 except for one thing: the moment I plug it in kmix doesn't recognize my microphone/headphones but only the webcam's inbuilt microphone- anybody know of a cure for that problem?

i just fixed my old-ish laptop (pop accident) and instead of putting window on it my dad talked me into trying ubuntu out, gotta say love it, fast and everything but having major problems. i have a lenovo 3000 v200. everything is the same as out of the box except the keyboard, only thing i really needed to replace.
ok problems
1) wireless is not working: i have the switch on (side of the laptop) and bluetooth lights up but wireless doesnt. (Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG). now i just learned about 'rfkill list' it shows that there is a soft block on the wireless. tried " rfkill unblock 0" nothing happened. also when i tried finding out wat kernel im using " uname-r" to find out more on why its not unblocking, the CLI says "comand isnt found" next two problems are small but are still frustrating
2) built in camera: the green light is on next to the lens but when trying to test the camera on skype or a photo program the video feed/ picture is black, or blank. not sure what i can do to fix that.
3) fingerprint scanner: yes i have one, i know its not efficient but I still like using it to login in instead of typing. im not sure how to get linux/ubuntu to recognize it if it even is. not sure how to set it up if it is recognized.
i would like to fix the wireless more than anything, if i can fix the camera and scanner then yeay, otherwise i can survive. oh and note i did try using the "additional drivers" app. nothing popped up.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 and a Sony H-5 dig. camera. Downloaded 700 photos using F-Spot and they're all visible but unable to get the individual photo jpeg data?
1. How do you get the "original camera data" that is attached to each photo jpeg? I must be missing a plug-in? Or?
2. Not possible to right click and copy these photo's out of F-Spot into a new folder?

I'm using Kubuntu, but installed Nautilus so I could use Dropbox. Yesterday I plugged my camera and it popped up a window asking what to do, but it didn't list any application, and the only option available was Cancel. Then I couldn't find it anywhere on the system, neither where it was mounted. Today I've turned on an USB hard disk and Nautilus popped up (why? shouldn't be dolphin...?), then afterwards plugged in the camera, and there it was on Nautilus.
But in it's interface I also couldn't find the mount point... I've seen I can add an entry on Dolphin's "Places", but I need the mount point. Is there a way to make Dolphin add the entry automatically? Device Actions under System Settings is a bit confusing... And Digital Camera (also under System Settings) gives "Unable to initialize camera, check your port settings and camera connectivity and try again. Could not lock the device", and indeed, I can't unmount it on Nautilus....

I am trying to get my tevii650 usb DVB-S2 tuner working. I seem to have installed all the correct drivers as far as I can tell.
When I scan for services and then use femon to look at the signal strength femon -H, I get a signal of around 83% with 0 SNR and BER. Then if I remove the feed the signal goes UP to 97% 0SNR and BER.
I am trying to monitor signal the signal level coming down from the satellite. I don't even want to be able to tune to any of the channels. Basically I want to use the PC as a glorified signal meter and datalogger.

I have a brand new Sony DPF-D75 Digital photo frame. I tried connecting it through the usb port with my 11.3 box in order to upload my pictures to it, but it isn't automatically mounted (unlike any other usb device I plug in, like my mouse & pen drive). Should I install any specific driver or something?

I'm running OpenSUSE 11.0 (64 bit). I have an Epson Stylus Photo R300 printer that used to work just fine. Apparently there was an update to the CUPS software that I applied and now the printer is no longer working.
Through examining the error_log file in /var/log/cups I found that two files were missing from /usr/lib/cups/filter. These files existed in the /usr/lib64/cups/filter directory so I linked them to the /usr/lib/cups/filter directory. That cleared up two errors.
When I send a "Print Self Test Page" command from the CUPS Printers page, I get the following error:
Returning IPP client-error-document-format-not-supported for Print-Job (ipp://localhost:631/printers/EPSON_Stylus_Photo_R300) from localhost
When I attempt to send a print job from an application like gedit or OpenOffice Writer, I get the following error:
Returning IPP client-error-document-format-not-supported for Send-Document (ipp://localhost:631/printers/EPSON_Stylus_Photo_R300) from localhost
I've crawled all through the openSUSE forums and 'googled' all sorts of variations for these errors and found nothing useful. I'm hoping someone here might have a clue as to where I might go next to fix this.
Like I said, it was working before and now it's not so there must be something in a recent CUPS release that has messed things up.

This sounds strange, but my laptop (running 11.2) won't boot correctly unless my external HDD (ext3) is on and plugged in. If I don't turn it on, it hangs at the start of udev. If I press ctrl+c, the system continues to boot, but the keyboard and mouse don't activate... don't function, etc. But I can press my power button and it does shut down. Going through dmesg (during a successful boot with the external HDD on), I saw this (not sure if it is relevant):
Code:
[2.201029] scsi 2:0:0:0: Direct-Access Ext Hard Disk PQ: 0 ANSI: 4
[2.201450] usb-storage: device scan complete
[2.206637] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Spinning up disk......
[6.062434] udev: starting version 146
[6.225262] .
The device sdb1 is the HDD.
Now, I don't know much about udev. I can tell you that I have no sdb1 lines in /etc/fstab, and I have no autofs references to it.

I was building LFS on a pendrive this morning when it crashed in the middle of making gcc. I rebooted without my pendrive and I never got into the desktop. Instead, I get a visually pleasing terminal telling me that it couldn't find and that the only way to reboot would be to press CTRL+D. I'm then given a command line and that's that.
Rebooting with the key inside works perfectly.
I reformatted my key and now there's nothing on it. I feel like somewhere somehow I added an entry to the boot process of my system and now I have to remove it. Never dealt with something like this before
Fstab:
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD2500AAJS-60Z0A0_WD-WCAV2M336077-part1 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD2500AAJS-60Z0A0_WD-WCAV2M336077-part2 ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1
[Code]....
The LaCie entry at the bottom there is my pendrive.

After installing openSUSE 11.2 everything worked well (instead of wlan working not continuously, but that's not the topic). Now my computer stopped registering the camera (it's a Canon Power Shot A540). I already tried to add it with gphoto in digiKam - the automatic search did not find it - after a manual registration gphoto could not connect to it (although it was plugged and switched on). The order lshal dumped 103 devices from the global Device List The order lshal -m started monitoring device list, but comes to no end
fdisk -l shows me my hard drive with all particions plus a mobile hard drive (connected via USB) but no camera (it's still plugged and turned on) after many hours and reading of many forum threads I don't know any further - can anybody help me find the solution for my prob?

Sony currently only supplies its NEX cameras with .exe binary firmware updates. Prior to purchasing the camera, I installed Wine and was able to execute the .exe. Of course, that doesn't guarantee that it'll work. Now, with the camera in hand, I actually tried to update the firmware. It didn't work. I tried using Wine 1.1.28 and 1.3.3 and even the cloned the Wine repository with git and compiling Wine with USB patches I found here: [URL] (Wine git, compile and install found here: USB - The Official Wine Wiki)
With the camera connected, I was able to use "wineconsole cmd" to open a dos shell. In the shell, I was able to see that the D: drive (which I assigned to /media/disk) was correctly accessing the camera as a mass storage device. I can only conclude that USB support works. However, it doesn't appear to work for updating the firmware. The firmware program from Sony searches for about a minute and doesn't find the camera. When I run the firmware updater with Wine, Wine produces these files:
[Code]....
The .dat file looks most likely to be the data I want to dump to the camera, but how? (I've done some research and have read that the data is probably encrypted.)
