OpenSUSE :: Using Wine To Update Sony NEX Camera Firmware
Oct 3, 2010
Sony currently only supplies its NEX cameras with .exe binary firmware updates. Prior to purchasing the camera, I installed Wine and was able to execute the .exe. Of course, that doesn't guarantee that it'll work. Now, with the camera in hand, I actually tried to update the firmware. It didn't work. I tried using Wine 1.1.28 and 1.3.3 and even the cloned the Wine repository with git and compiling Wine with USB patches I found here: (Wine git, compile and install found here: USB - The Official Wine Wiki)
With the camera connected, I was able to use "wineconsole cmd" to open a dos shell. In the shell, I was able to see that the D: drive (which I assigned to /media/disk) was correctly accessing the camera as a mass storage device. I can only conclude that USB support works. However, it doesn't appear to work for updating the firmware. The firmware program from Sony searches for about a minute and doesn't find the camera. When I run the firmware updater with Wine, Wine produces these files:
....
The .dat file looks most likely to be the data I want to dump to the camera, but how? (I've done some research and have read that the data is probably encrypted.)
Well, after searching several forums and trial and error, I finally got my builtin webcam to work. Its r5u870 05ca:1836. The only problem I now have is that after a hard boot (system was powered down), I then have to do a soft boot for this to work properly. It seems to me that the problem is the firmware loading. Obviously, doing a shutdown -r means that the firmware remains in the webcam device and then everything seems OK.
After a soft boot: linus:~/bin # lsmod|grep -e sony -e uvc -e r5u r5u870 26436 0 usbcam 47808 1 r5u870 sony_laptop 35688 0 uvcvideo 66124 0 rfkill 22772 2 cfg80211,sony_laptop videodev 39168 2 usbcam,uvcvideo v4l1_compat 16004 2 uvcvideo,videodev linus:~/bin # lsusb|grep Ric Bus 001 Device 004: ID 05ca:1836 Ricoh Co., Ltd Visual Communication Camera VGP-VCC4 [R5U870] linus:~/bin # luvcview -L luvcview version 0.2.1 Video driver: x11 A window manager is available video /dev/video0 /dev/video0 does not support read i/o .....
After a hard boot, luvcview will not display anything after the line beginning with { pixel... How to make this all work without the soft reboot?
I have a recently upgraded OpenSuse 11.3 system (this problem also appeared to me in OpenSuse 11.2). I have a Sony DSC-W290 camera, and I would like to connect to this camera to get the photos. When I plug the camera to the USB the camera sets itself to "Memory Stick" but nothing happens on the Gnome Linux desktop. I assume that the system should automatically mount the filesystem as it does correctly with other devices (external USB disks and classical memory sticks).
This is the output of the last lines of 'dmesg'

I am experiencing a problem reading long filenames on dual-layer 8.5 Gb DVDs. SEE: I am considering a possible solution might be a firmware update. The drive is a Toshiba-Samsung : SE-S084B/RSBN [TSST=Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Corp] Samsung provides ONLY windows updates or a web-based *windows-only* method of installing same. SEE: Is it possible to apply a firmware update using WINE?
I don't know if it's just my system, but after applying the latest Wine update, the mouse cursor in Wine windows is now purple/magenta/pink, whatever. Not a big problem, just annoying. I've looked through the various config files in ~home and /usr/share/wine, and can't find any parameter that might even remotely address this.
I have a Linux-based PC, running Fedora 13, and am attempting to upload photos from my Soncy Cyber-Shot DSC-W310 digital camera. When I insert the CD that came with my camera, I get the following error message:
Archive: /media/SONYPMB/Install.exe [/media/SONYPMB/Install.exe] End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive. zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /media/SONYPMB/Install.exe or /media/SONYPMB/Install.exe.zip, and cannot find /media/SONYPMB/Install.exe.ZIP, period.
I spoke with your tech support person, and he indicated that I could press menu, and go to setting and select PictBridge on the USB option, but that does not work either.
I run Ubuntu 10.04 on a Sony FZ-VGN15C Laptop. On start-up of Ubuntu I get two error messages including '...Video : Failed...' (the message is too fast to be read completely) This might relate to the fact that my built in camera does not work with Skype or Cheese Webcam Booth. The webcam type is VGP-VCC4 by RICOH.
I can't my system because of this error: Code: linux-firmware: /lib/firmware/radeon/R700_rlc.bin exists in filesystem Note that in the beginning, it asks:
Code: :: Replace kernel26-firmware with core/linux-firmware? [Y/n] There are so many updates by now that the list fills in a few pages in the terminal! Also, I wonder why so many Arch updates get stuck or broken compared to almost any other distro? Is it poorly designed packages? Is it a design flaw in pacman/the package format?
I am having connection problems with my Ralink card under Natty Narwhal (11.04) on my netbook. Since I bought the machine over 2 years ago, I have never done any hardware updates. Today I came a across a *.bin file to update the firmware on my card.
I'm using Lego Mindstorm NXT and I'trying to change the firmware with Lejos. When I try to do it, the terminal give me this message:
Code: antonella@antonella-desktop:~$ nxjflash Building firmware image. VM file: /usr/local/lejos_nxj/bin/lejos_nxt_rom.bin Menu file: /usr/local/lejos_nxj/bin/StartUpText.bin
I've installed Debian Squeeze on my server several days ago. During install process installer asked me to provide USB flash drive with firmware aic94xx-seq.fw. All went fine. Today I installed all updates to my system with "U" in aptitude. Aptitude installed kernel update 2.6.32-5 and created initrd accordingly. But now I can't boot up my system because it can't find LVM volumes on harddrive connected to Adaptec RAID card. How can I boot my system now? I have USB with firmware.
I have netboot CD. Unfortunately when I tried to edit boot records in grub I found that there is no my old kernel anymore. The only kernel grub sees is the new vmlinuz kernel and new initrd How take make my server alive?
I have a Trendnet TEW652BRP wireless router, HW/ V2.1R, FW/ V2.00b34. I have read that these routers had a problem, with the stock firmware, where port forwarding was concerned. And indeed, I do have some problems with it. Ie; canyouseeme.org can't see me when I open ports, and I am not on a proxy server. I have tried this with the appropriate exception rules (in/out) in ufw, and on the router settings with UPnP enabled and disabled. In the latter case, I also tried router firewall rules, port forwarding and access rules. Still could not see me (timed out in all cases).
Now, this being an area I have little experience with, I am not sure if this version of firmware was supposed to have fixed the PF problems. To the questions...
1. Has anyone here who had an analogous experience found a solution, with the stock firmware?
2. I have read about the DD-WRT option to flash the router firmware (which says fixes the issue), but I am wary. I believe this is a Linux based replacement firmware, which is not a bad thing in my book, but does anyone have any recommendations or heads up on issues with it, from experience, apart from what is commented in the documentation at
I want to upgrade my Samsung Galaxy Gio S5660 to Gingerbread XXKPA 2.3.3 Firmware. I now have Froyo (Android 2.2) and want to update my Androidsystem to Gingerbread. This can be done in windows with some windowsprogram named Kies, but I only have my Fedora 14 installation on my PC. I now wonder if it is possible to do this firmware upgrade with F14 ?
I need to access each drive of a RAID array in order to update the firmware - I am completely new to linux. I think there are probably some potential challanges along the way to get this "working" For example, it seems to me that the array may present itself to application code as a single device. I need to drill down into the RAID and talk to each physical device in turn via some sort of pass-through mechanism. I'm currently pretty lost - can anyone point me in the "right" direction
I was looking to iphone and i was surprised the quality of such tiny camera.
Is there any alternative camera for my laptop to have similar or much better then the one in iphone? So that i can use it from my laptop, but have very sharp HD quality with maximum megapixel + highest frame per second.
I have problem connecting a sony handycam DCR-TRV270E PAL via firewire. The system cannot detect the camera.I tried kino, gimp, kdenlive nothing happens. When i plug in the camera nothing happens.
after installing Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04, I'm experiencing tons and tons of complications with the wireless Internet connection. I have solved most of them. Now I have only one thing left. When I hit the drop-down menu for wireless connections, it says "Wireless connection (Firmware missing)"
I have installed the driver for my wireless card but what is the firmware? I honestly don't know what it is although it's very basic. I have a Broadcom 43xx as my wireless card (specifically 4306). How do I get the firmware for it? Do I find it in Windows? Also I cannot get b43-fwcutter because I have absolutely to Internet connection on Ubuntu. To post this, I'm using Windows.
since I decommissioned the last Windows station in my house last week,I am now trying to get pictures off a Sony Mavica mvc-cd 200. I found on a forum : "tread it like any other block device. So I'm trying to mount it like I would a usb key.

Im trying to form a gaming comumunity on facebook around the issue of PlayStations new 3.21 firmware, if we can get enough members and we are able show a large enough fan base for the retaining of the OtherOS while also being able to access the PSN were hoping Sony will reinstate the feature. Its a long shot but if you at LinuxQuestions could join the group and also pass the link around hopefully we can at least do something. I have recently installed inkscape on a KDE4 desktop using opensuse 11.3.I tried opening a .ARW file coming from a Sony NEX digital camera. The open file dialog page indicates that .arw files are supported, but when i try to do so a failure error message box appears.I started by asking this question at inkscape.org and got this response:
"Your question #147075 on Inkscape changed: https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/147075 Status: Open => Answered
Other than several other problems on my new Sony VAIO I solved with workarounds (it's a terrible machine for working with Linux especially for NVIDIA drivers) I cannot make my microphone working.
Code: malvasia:~ # uname -a Linux malvasia.yacme 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2010-10-25 08:40:12 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux malvasia:~ # aplay -l **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC275 Analog [ALC275 Analog] .....
I've found a patch to make mic on ALC275 working but I don't know if it's applicable to 11.3 kernel nor if there is a easier solution to adopt.
I have a Sony MP3 player which is a SOK-NWZ-B512F(B) model that couldn't detected by OpenSUSE. I did try on other pen drive which is a Kingston brand, it is detected and a pop-up message mention that I have an USB drive connected.
I tried to installed OpenSUSE 11.2 "i586" on an older Sony Vaio laptop (model PCG-XG9) with 20 GB HD and 128 or 256 MB RAM. There is no ethernet port, but I have a PCMCIA WLAN card "Cabetron RoamAbout 11 Mbit/s", which should work perfectly with any Linux. The computer had Win98 on it originally (which, of course, after all installation attempts is now destroyed). The problem is that I cannot install to the end at all - no matter what I try:
1) Having the disk as a single FAT partition (made by a Win98 installation CD), it appears that the installer cannot create the correct partitions needed for Linux.
2) Having deleted the DOS partition with FDISK from Windows98 - which is like buying a completely new, unformatted HD from a store. But again, it cannot automatically set the partitions...
Is there a manual / instruction page somewhere how I should partition the disk manually (how to do it, and what sizes are recommended for each partition)?
i bought the new sony notebook the specs are Sony Vaio VPC-Z12Z9E Intel i7-620M, 8192MB, 4x64GB SSD, 13.1" WUXGA (1920x1080), Win7Pro, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M und Intel GMA HD, GLAN, WLAN (300 Mbps), Bluetooth, Webcam
the notebook have 4 ssd cards in raid 0 - its an intel software raid but suse recognize it and i am able to install it. kde or gnome installation is success but a boot loader cant be installed. i can life with - start install, cancel and start the installed system. but nothing found. also i could enter the dev name for boot but what dev is that.
i can not update wine 1.1.38,installed on my ubuntu 9.10.it give this warning:Requires installation of untrusted packages. The action would require the installation of packages from not authenticated sources.
