Aug 23, 2011I have ATI Radeon HD 5650 (code name Redwood) on Ubuntu 11.04. And I have been experimenting with open-source and proprietary driver.
The problem with proprietary driver is bad 2D rendering when watching movies in VLC (and any other), because if vsync is off, video is tearing and when its on, the video seems to stutter (the background moves in steps, not smooth). I have tried open-source radeon driver and its far better, but that driver doesn't have 3D acceleration for playing games. I was trying to play Hive Rise, and with proprietary driver works great, but with open-source the game starts, but i don't see the interface (start game, options, etc.).
It seems that Mesa 7.10 (in Natty) doesn't have 3D support for this card, but Mesa 7.11 (in Oneiric) will have that. Is that correct? I just want to have good 2D performance with ability to play games.

Sep 8, 2010what the prepackaged proprietary nvidia driver is missing to run compiled OpenCL programs.
I have the pre-packaged proprietary nvidia driver from [URL] and the package is missing some files, like lobOpenCL.so, which I extracted from the .run file and put manually in the /usr/lib64 directory toether with creating some symlinks. I can compile my opencl programs fine (C | // // File: hello.c // - Anonymous - 3BF2vDzc - [URL], Getting started with OpenCL and GPU Computing), but when I run, the firsr opencl-related function clGetPlatformIDs returns an error code.
Again, I try to figure out what the prepackaged driver is missing. If I use the nvidia .run script driver, the problem probably does not exist. CUDA executables run fine (compiled on an other opensuse machine without nvidia card)

I just got one to stick into an older box that will be going to a college girl that wants the 3D desktop in KDE. The built-in video was a joke and wouldn't even work without compositing. It was one of those crappy, non-standard pieces of crap known as a "Unichrome" (not the pro).

Jun 13, 2011There is one thing missing (I think) a clear guide to clearing out Nvidia and replacing it with nouveau. For all but hardened gamers, nouveau on 11.4 delivers. It also removes one more barrier to what I think is the intended goad of Tumbleweed.The problem IMHO is not that there are no clear guides. The problem is there are too many. No sooner does one person do a guide (that is clear) and someone else who does not like some point writes another guide that they think is more clear (but in fact is less clear in other aspects). And this goes on ad infinitum.IMHO we have too many guides - many of which are sufficient clear ... but the VAST number only serves to confuse users more.
Having typed that, IMHO this is NOT a Tumbleweed specific issue, but its MUCH WIDER in scope and hence does not belong as a discussion in this Tumbleweed thread.

Jan 9, 2011I installed the proprietary driver in System->Administration->Additional Drivers, but after installing when I am required to restart, I restart my computer and encounter a black screen. I tried using Ctrl-Alt-'-" to change the resolution but that didn't work because the computer is completely frozen, so I have to reboot in recovery and uninstall the driver...
This also makes it so I am unable to go to the maximum resolution my desktop can obtain. (1920 x 1200, but I'm limited to 1600 x 1200)

Aug 8, 2010I've been running OpenSuSE 11.2 for some time now; my system is a Dell 64-bit with an ATI 46xx graphics card and I've used the proprietary ATI driver without difficulty, as the driver provided with OpenSuSE was pretty much unusable. I'm considering upgrading to v11.3, but there seem to be scattered horror stories involving ATI cards, particularly when it comes to ATI's proprietary driver.

And how do I revert back to 'radeon'?

Mar 29, 2011I've given it the old college try for a couple years, starting with openSUSE 11.1 without success. I'm up to 11.4 now with no change or relief. My openSUSE box with NVIDIA proprietary driver and the default refresh settings of 80KHz/75Hz, has an annoying beat frequency with... something, somewhere, causing an annoying ghostly flicker on my trusty 1280x1024 LCD display. I can run both openSUSE and Windows XP on this hardware and they both have the same annoying flicker at those settings. However, in Windows XP, all I have to do is select a 70Hz refresh, resulting in settings of 74.6KHz/70 Hz, and the annoying flicker is cured... for Windows only, of course. I have tried to change these settings in openSUSE to no affect. In 11.4, I find that the advice is to create modelines using CVT and edit xorg.conf, but despite rigid adherence to instructions, there's no change. The monitor continues to see refresh settings of 80KHz/75Hz and the annoying flicker persists.
I hate to rag on openSUSE since it does so many things well, but there's a number of adjustments I'd like to make, especially the vertical refresh, that simply won't change, even when following documented or testamented procedures. Concentrating on the vertical refresh for now, is there anything that really works?

Jul 26, 2011I'm using openSuse 11.3 with KDE 4.4.4. My graphics card is an Asus EAH 5450 with an ATI radeon HD 5450 GPU. I'm using the opensource radeon driver. When I open sysinfo:/ in Konqueror, I see the following info:

How do I switch on 3d acceleration without installing the proprietary driver from ATI/AMD? I know this must be possible because on another computer, I have also openSuse 11.3 with KDE 4.4.4 and an ATI radeon HD 4350 installed and it has 3d enabled directly after installation of openSuse with the opensource radeon driver.

I have wheezy up to date and the xserver-xorg-video-radeon package is at version 6.14.2-1. I am using the linux-image-2.6.39-2-amd64 package as well for the kernel. When I boot, it stays on the tty1 console and I can't start gdm3 manually (it also doesn't start automatically).

Aug 4, 2010I've installed openSUSE 11.3, and I want to have hardware 3D acceleration on my Radeon 5850. Far as I can tell, I don't have any right now (for example, I installed armagetron and it uses software rendering).
I'm a technical enough user, but I'm new to openSUSE and to Linux, and my previous attempt of installing ATI drivers (proprietary ones on Fedora) resulted in the OS being unable to boot. I figure that asking for directions would help make things work out better this time.

Nov 11, 2010I got 11.3 64-bit installed properly the first time around and working with a Radeon HD4350. I noticed X to be somewhat sluggish on certain apps under KDE so a couple of days ago I tried to install the Catalyst 10.10 tool from the unofficial repository. I didn't like it and uninstalled it.
After some research it turned out that the proper driver is radeon so I uninstalled the radeonhd driver and rebooted hoping Xorg will pick up the radeon driver automatically as it is included with my kernel. Didn't work and I couldn't even get past the failsafe login screen. Regular boot doesn't even get to the login screen. Just hangs and won't respond to any keyboard commands.
I followed the instruction at this SDB Configuring graphics cards in openSUSE 11.3 using the ATI Xorg -configure option from level 3 console and creating a radeon xorg.conf file. It all works to the point of "startx" as regular user which just brings me back to console. Rebooting and does the same things as before under failsafe and regular. Even nomodeset doesn't help. The output error from startx in failsafe console mode is the following:

Mar 31, 2010I just replaced my older monitor with a slightly newer, much nicer Dell 1905FP. I need to have it rotated, but I have no clue how to rotate it. I have seen several xorg.conf modifications that are supposed to work for some of the nvidia drivers, but nothing for the generic radeon driver. The radio buttons in SaX2 are grayed out as well. How do I set up X11 to rotate my display? Preferably without installing the other ATi driver, as I have tried before to switch to that one, and have been unsucessfull.

I know that radeonhd does cause some issues with KDE desktop effects, but according to Radeon - openSUSE, the cards above X1900 should be using radeonhd. Instead of either of these, should I try to use the ATI driver fglrx? It seems from my gleaning of forum posts that these have some problems, but I am having some desktop effect issues that maybe would be addressed with that driver.

Using OpenSUSE 11.2 KDE, Motherboard MSI 648F Neo, Pentium4 2.8GHz, 2 x 1GB DDR.I've found, that my card should be supported according to HCL/ATI Video Cards - openSUSEInstallation following ATI drivers - openSUSE Easy Way didn't work because of chcecksum difference (x11-video-fglrxG02), Repositary Way too. Hard Way Installation resulted to disability of Graphic Environment and I wasn't able to fix that (finally, I somehow get running KDE, but Kwin always broke down, so system was unuseful).
I also tried packages found by Software search (Software.openSUSE.org), so package 'xorg-x11-driver-video-radeonhd' but nothing works for me, some of them provide result of "glxingo | grep direct" -> "No", some of them "Yes", but in this case I wasn't able to run "glxgears", because of error "drmRadeonCmdBuffer: -22. Kernel failed to parse or rejected command stream. See dmesg for more info." Desktop Effects I cannot run anyway. how to get graphic acceleration working. It will be great if is here someone with exactly same, or similar card, he could write a step-by-step guide to do that. Starting with fresh installation of OpenSUSE (not corrupted by my previous tries) is not problem.

Sep 20, 2010I'm an owner of a ATI mobility radeon X1300 card. Since ATI tagged my card as legacy, i'm stuck with the open source radeon drivers. Wich doesn't bother me, as i know they are slower and openGL support doesn't equal fglrx. What does bother me is that the current version 7.9 dev. claims to have full opengl support up to 2.1. I'm trying to use a extention that is part of the openGL version 1.3 and it's failing. This is a known issue for a long time now and it really disappoints me. "Compressed textures" is what i'm talking about.
Is there any way to make sure that drivers aren't tagged with something they support if they obviously don't? I guess the KDE4 kwin vs drivers thing is the same as i'm trying to say now. Drivers should be documented with what they effectively support and not what they should support. What can I do to make this public to xorg developers? I could only think about posting this here as i have no idea where to put it elsewere. Could someone please point me in the right direction to where i should send this complaint?

May 3, 2011I just upgraded to 11.04 from 10.10. I have a Radeon 6450 with 1GB of video RAM which should give me pretty good performance, but I'm only getting a measly 60 fps with the new ATI diver (11.4). I installed like this, making sure I'd removed the open source driver:sh ati-driver-installer-11-4-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/nattyThen installed the debs and ran an aticonfig --initial.
