OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.2 - KDE Does Not Seem To Be Working Well
Jun 7, 2010
I'm working on an oldish laptop (evesham 7251P, but can't find any info on it in that name, seems to be the same as the Mitac 7251P). Using opensuse 11.2, latest gnome and kde (although KDE doesn't seem to be working that well, only shows gnome icons for a start!) with everything kept upto date. I just took out the only ram chip (256) and put in a new one (512). However, the computer (bios and OS) reads it at about 640M. Also the first few boots wouldn't take me to login screen, just runlevel5 for text based login so I couldn't choose session type.
Also certain programs, thunderbird & kile so far, often give segmentation fault and crash, and google chrome just crashed randomly. I think iceWM also logged out randomly of its own accord one time. Basically it seems to be messed up. There's a chance that the motherboard won't take 512M, but I'm pretty sure I read it can. When I put the 256 back in everything ran fine and the computer recognised it as 256, not some other value. What sort of fault does this look like? Is it faulty RAM? Is it a SuSE/hardware fault? How do I find out?
I followed the sticky about setting up wireless and I have come to an issue where the WLAN switch which is on this computer can be pressed, the light comes on, but no WLAN. When I looked in dmesg, this is what I get:
ipw2100: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Connection firmware: requesting ipw2100-1.3.fw eth0: Radio is disabled by RF switch.
Notice it says that the 'Radio is disabled by switch' in dmesg. I can press that switch until the end of the world comes and it does absolutely nothing but make the WLAN light put on a light show. And it shows the wlan to be unassociated with any clients. So, what are my options to get this Wireless up and working?
Computer/OS info:
Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo M7400 1.4GHz Intel Centrino R 40GB HD Suse 11.1 KDE
I use an internet connection with a proxy. I have set the proxy in Firefox and systemsettings so now I can browse the web and I can ping Google from Console. But when I start Software Management, it says "Cannot access installation media". Whats wrong?
I recently installed opensuse 11.4 on a remote server. It has GNOME installed as a desktop. The problem I am experiencing is that when logged in through VNC, most of the GUI apps are not functioning, especially ones that require root privs. Example: The Add/Create users context does not function. After you supply root pw, nothing happens. If you launch it from a terminal, you see this:
jjmuw@g01:~> xdg-su -c /sbin/yast2 users Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "::1:1.0". No protocol specified No protocol specified
[code]....
(y2base:4872): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: ::1:1.0
Followed by a hang. This is also affecting things like the Xen configuration contexts (creating/managing VMs).
I have a fresh install of openSUSE 11.4 with KDE. This includes ALSA and Pulseaudio.
I have a mic and speakers and a webcam. As far as I can see microphone and sound reproduction work, the webcam also works: - I can arecord and aplay - KMix works - amixer and alsamixer work (I am using microphone boost) - test sounds play - the webcam works in "Personal Settings (Configure Desktop)": Hardware > Multimedia > Phonon (test camera) - Pidgin and Empathy work with sound and video. (had to set this: gconftool-2 --set --type=string /system/gstreamer/0.10/default/audiosrc pulsesrc, without this setting it was set to alsasrc by default and Pidgin and Empathy didn't work).
I installed Skype 2.2 (also tried 2.1) and tested the video camera in Skype. Result: doesn't work. I made a test call: I hear the voice of the lady answering the call, but my own voice is not recorded. In Skype everything is set to use Pulseaudio.
I am at a total loss to understand what is going wrong here. Why does Skype not work, when everything else does??
I made this observation: When an application records something, a "Capture stream" shows up in the KMix "Capture Streams" tab. For example, when I use arecord, "ALSA capture" shows up, while I record. When I make a call on Empathy, a capture stream shows up in the said tab.
When I make a Skype call, NO capture stream shows up, so obviously Skype is not capturing anything.
I'm needing Internet Explorer 7-8 to access 1 web site (there had to be one and I need to access it.) I have installed the ies4linix which has successfully got Explorer 6 working, but the beta for 7 doesn't work. The Explorer 7 opens up fine, the world spins around and at the bottom of the page the solid blue gets half way and stops. I don't know what to do next. Has anyone successfully got Explorer 7 or 8 working on 11.1? If so can you let me know how you did it?
I'm not sure if this is an OS issue but openSUSE wont boot with two different ram speeds. I've got two 1gb 667Mhz RAM and tried one of 800Mhz. So the idea was to get 3gb (1gb 667Mhz + 2gb 800Mhz).After GRUB starts nothing happens (at least on screen).By the way I also tried the 800Mhz RAM alone and it worked so it's ok.Why openSUSE (11.3) can't boot with these two different RAM memories?
after installing OpenSuse 11.2 (32Bit) I have two problems. One is, that the VNC in not working. The behavior is quite simple explained: After accessing from another machine with VNC-Viewer, the window is coming in the right size, but it remains black. There is no login-dialog opening. When looking in the messages it's clear, the VNC is correctly working, but it's not starting a KDE. This bug is well known in lots of forums but the solution is missing. Does anybody really know a solution, or better a programmer can change this ?
when "nut" is running sometimes the Linux "Power Management Preference" (PMP) shows a UPS tab, and sometimes it doesn't. I haven't figured it all out yet but it seem rather random when I do an init 3 then init 5. That is, on restarting X Windows PMP might or might not have a UPS tab.Regardless of whether PMP has a UPS tab or not, nut seems to work just fine.
However, that's a side issue. The real issue that I am having is that nut doesn't shut down my server when I put the UPS on battery. I have run the UPS right down to 10% and it's minimum threshold is 20%.And, even though nut doesn't shut down my server it does work in every other way that I can test. Even the web interface works.Could someone who has got this working please look at my configuration and let me know if they see anything wrong, or give ideas on how to troubleshoot thisHere is my configuration:
Code: hosts.conf MONITOR myups@localhost "Tripp Lite UPS SU1500XL"
I am a bit of a linux newbie so help is genuinely appreciated. I have an an install of opensuse 11.3 and it is has been a delight. However, just recently I noticed that nothing happens when I plug in a USB device, nothing happens. For example, when I plug in my mp3 player and type dmesg I get:
[1818401.093871] usb 2-4.6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 16 [1818401.168430] usb 2-4.6: New USB device found, idVendor=0e21, idProduct=0800 [1818401.168433] usb 2-4.6: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
Just installed WMII and Awesome with YAST,on my search for a Tiling-WM.They both were listed in the WM/DE-Menu on user-change,but I got neigher WMII,nor Awesome working. Do I have to change some configs,or whatever,to get a new WM/DE working?
I'm on KDE 4.1.3 on my openSuSE 11.1. Once while playing around with the Plasma Widget I accidentally deleted the KMenu Widget. Though I did get it back, I am unable to use the shortcut key (Alt+F1) since. I checked the Keyboard Shortcuts and found that the Alt+F1 key is mapped as a shortcut to the Application Launcher under Plasma Workspace.
I just installed Compiz for KDE in my OpenSUSE 11.2. I use Compiz for my window manager but there is a problem. When I press Alt + Tab there is nothing happen. Is there anything I need to configure in Compiz?
Had it working in Ubuntu and now Ive switched to openSUSE and loving it! Much better than Ubuntu. But I cant get the touchscreen working. Please help...Ive tried to get it working but assume I have done nothing please. Im semi-intelligent when it comes to linux but most of my experience has come from Ubuntu.Im kernel 2.6.34-12 and using openSUSE 11.3 (32 bit)
I use dovecot as an IMAP server for mail clients on my local machine. This worked fine in 11.3 but on 11.4 the authentication doesn't seem to work - my mail client just can't connect to the dovecot server.
I didn't change any settings, but now I get login failed.I checked the password and I using the correct pasword.for the first account I used when installing openSUSE I get past the login but then the rdesktop client hangs and then closes whit the incomplete message "error: did not receive a reply. possible causes include.."the other account I created doesn't accept the password.I checked /var/log/xrdp-sesman.log and it was empty.
I am new to Opensuse, I used Fedora for more than a year and installed OS 11.4 64bit to experience the awesome KDE that Opensuse offers. I added KDE 4.6 Stable: Index of /repositories/KDE:/Release:/46/openSUSE_11.4/x86_64 It worked fine since the install(I installed 11.4 this Saturday), suddenly yesterday I don't remember what I did, KDE stopped working. What happens is I login using kdm, then all the stuff loads up but when I try to open anything the whole KDE freezes. If I clicked the launcher on bottom bar it opens only at the beginning, then if I press anything inside the launcher things freeze. Then even the launcher freezes too.I rememeber doing 2 things I did before restart:1) I did sudo zypper dup2) I changed my theme to Qtcurve gtk look. I thought the problem might be because of the QTCurve theme and even uninstalled using alt+f2 command line restarted, no change
my laptop is dell inspiron 6400 i installed opensuse 11.3 in this.everything working fine.the problem is some keys are physicall not working(in suse and windows i have dual boot) due to this im unable to power on wifi in my laptop to power on it i have to press Fn+F2 keys simultaneously.but Fn key is notworkimng. i have one usb keyboard but it is not having Fn key.
After upgrading to 11.4 I can't get my mic to work. In 11.3 it "just worked". Originally I had 2 problems - no sound in Flash videos and mic not working. After uninstalling PulseAudio, Flash is working, but still no luck with my mic. I've tried all the possible options in KMix and alsamixes and it's still like dead. The system is OpenSuse 11.4, KDE 4.6, 64 bit.
Bluetooth was working in KDE 4.1 in openSUSE 11.0 with no problems. I install openSUSE 11.1 and now the bluetooth icon that should show up in the system tray no longer shows up. If I hit Ctrl + Esc I can see kbluetooth4 in "System Activity". All that's changed is I did a fresh install (I don't do upgrades) of openSUSE 11.1 with the same KDE I was running in 11.0. I would like to know what's broke even if I can't fix it. I hate not knowing why something isn't doing what it's suppose to be doing.
I just realized my Thesaurus function is inactive. Ctrl F7 does nothing, and on the pull down menu Tools>Language the Thesaurus option is greyed out.
I went to Tools>Options>Writing Aids and under the Language Modules, Thesaurus is listed but no dictionary box to click. No sub module listed under Thesaurus.
There a spell check dictionary listed and marked -- Hunspell Checker.
When I go to the OOo extension page I see no Thesaurus files to download?
How can I get the Thesaurus working as without it Writer is going to be pretty useless. I am using the GB dictionary.
I tried upgrading to OOo 3.1 but that hasn't helped either.
I am connecting to SuSE 11.1 from an XP workstation. The host is running XRDP xorg-x11-server-rdp-7.3.99-9.1, xorg-x11-server-dmx-7.3.99-42.1, xrdp-0.4.1-39.1 The client is running MS RDP 6.0.6x Generally, all is well. But Cut/Paste is not working outside of the XRDP session. I can Cut/Paste between apps in the XRDP session but not between the XRDP session and the client?
I've recently installed from scratch Suse 11.2, and I'm having a bit of an issue with kdesu. Basically everytime I try to start an application using kdesu (e.g. Yast), the windows where to put the password appears, but when I click on OK, or I press enter nothing happens, the windows stays where it was, and of course the program does not start. The same issue occurs when I type the password to open kwalletmanager, I suppose the two things are connected.
I don't use a KDE or Gnome, but want to have USB and cdrom media automounted by ivman. That worked fine with OS 11.1 (with the help of a selfmade "mountpolicies.fdi"). I installed and started ivman on a freshly installed and up-to-date OS 11.2 running icewm as WM, but an USB stick or USB disk is only automounted if ivman is restarted after every insertion of the device, or if it is present at boot time.
I've updated to opensSUSE 11.2, but only now I've discovered that by clicking on the openSUSE-icon (the one with the green chameleon placed on desktop's corner) I receive an error:
I have an acer lab top and OpenSuSE 11.2 installed but now the wireless card is not working. With ubuntu I had a tool called jokey to install missing drivers. Does there exist a jockey version (rpm not deb) for OpenSUSE or is there i simillar tool.
