I use dovecot as an IMAP server for mail clients on my local machine. This worked fine in 11.3 but on 11.4 the authentication doesn't seem to work - my mail client just can't connect to the dovecot server.

I have tried to find solution in existing posts but could not specifically find any with my kind of issues and hence a new post on oft repeated subject !! -- and apologies for a long long post here.Here is where I am ..On a AMD 64bit machine - I have ubuntu 10.10 desktop installed. I want this development machine to support virtual mailboxes so that I can use them from multiple apps and create real life deployment situations.I installed postfix + dovecot following the tutorials available here and current state is - I can send mails using telnet sessions and I see that the mail files are getting created in /Maildir form as I have directed in the conf files. I have configured Thunderbird mail client as well.
Issue #1: Mail sending works from Thunderbird but it always responds back with 'No mail on server' message when I try to receive mails. SMTP is configured with STARTTLS and POP3 with None (i.e. plain text password)Issue #2: Also, while going thru conf, logs and during testing - I found a few things which defer in this installation for authentication. I have given the session transcripts here.Issue #3: That being major issue - I also want to configure my virtual users to use TB client to access their mails - I did not find any tutorials or pointers towards that in my search for past few days. I am running a quad core centos 5.4 box that is having a strange problem with dovecot. The administration panel is able to send emails through dovecot but not any of the user accounts (ie with webmail). I've done a bit of research with what could be wrong but haven't had any luck so far I am also having a weird problem with apache: on a c++/php bittorrent application I was going to be running on a subdomain of my main site I get a 500 error every time I try to log in. The only way to get rid of the 500 error is to clear the chache (so its horribly broken somehow). The error generated in the log whenever I try to log in is that "ffmpeg is already loaded" (which I am running on the main site and is critical). Is there a way of either repairing my apache install or excluding ffmpeg on the subdomain in the conf or something?

One of our requirements is to provide huge emails (up to 100M each) sending and receiving. For this purpose we have configured posfix and dovecot(POP3+IMAP). Then issue is that when email size is greater than 32M it sometimes (very often) couldn't be received by users through POP3 protocol and also through IMAP (receiving process fails at server side). Could it be a kernel or hardware compatibility issue?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been having enormous problems with pam authentication. I use opensuse 11.1, postfix 2.5.5, dovecot 1.1.7. , ssl, dovecot-sasl. Everything works fine within local network, but I can't log in from outside (using outlook express 6). Output of dovecot -n:

For about a week now I've been seeing mass attempts to relay through postfix and login to dovecot from the same 2 addresses, none are successful due to how postfix/dovecot are configured and I wouldn't be overly worried but my isp have picked up on it and are nagging at me
What ways do people go about just dropping connection attempts from offending addresses/ranges when stuff like that happens? An ideal thing would be something that detects repeated failed attempts from a host or range and subsequently ignore/ban them, perhaps for a specified length of time, something along the lines of denyhosts and fail2ban for ssh would be great Don't know if there's anything out there or just a plain tried and trusted method anyone might use for stuff like this, if not a hint on the most appropriate way to go about it 'manually' would do
I have Centos 5 and dovecot 1.0.7 I want to upgrade it to 1.0.18 the latest one. I did look at the dovecot website but couldn't find any upgrade instruction.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI followed the sticky about setting up wireless and I have come to an issue where the WLAN switch which is on this computer can be pressed, the light comes on, but no WLAN. When I looked in dmesg, this is what I get:

When running iwconfig wlan0 heres what I get:

Notice it says that the 'Radio is disabled by switch' in dmesg. I can press that switch until the end of the world comes and it does absolutely nothing but make the WLAN light put on a light show. And it shows the wlan to be unassociated with any clients. So, what are my options to get this Wireless up and working?

I use an internet connection with a proxy. I have set the proxy in Firefox and systemsettings so now I can browse the web and I can ping Google from Console. But when I start Software Management, it says "Cannot access installation media". Whats wrong?

I believe I have everything but this setup, as when I use my Outlook's Test Account Setting, it's able to do the following:
1) Send a test e-mail
2) Connect to POP3
3) See the actual test e-mail at /var/spool/mail/<username>
However, the Test Account Setting wasn't able to authenticate to POP3. I then do the following:
1) Start up Command Prompt.
2) Execute "telnet <server IP> 110". It gives me "+OK Dovecot ready".
3) Type "user <username>"
4) Type "pass <password>". It gives me "-ERR Authentication failed".
Then I searched around and found this. However, I'm not sure if I am able to make any sense out of it.
My CentOS 5.5 is setup with the following standard files:
/etc/passwd (password field contains the character "x")
/etc/shadow (examining this reveals it's using MD5 has as the password field begins with $1$)
So how should I set my /etc/dovecot.conf? I think it's this file I need to setup to enable POP3 authentication?
I just setup dovecot to use imap. I'm using the same cert and key that I'm using on Postfix smtp over ssl. It's a self signed cert. After running this

I've used Dovecot only in the past but my package manager loads tons of MySQL libraries with Dovecot which is a problem since that's not authorized on my server right now. My question is I've built a new server and now it has Dovecot 2.0.11 & I would like to know if I need to generate a new configuration file or will the above 1.x work in 2.0.11? The configuration file 'dovecot.conf' generated by 2.0.11 is all commented out and I don't know what I need to uncomment / add to the config to get IMAP working.

CentOS 5 box was just setup to replace a crashed old one. I have postfix.admin installed and working, added users (confirmed from mysql command line) and can login using telnet server pop3 with the user information. The problem I am left with is just receiving mail. I have both squirrelmail and roundcube installed, and can also authenticate using both (/var/log/maillog shows);From either webclient I can naturally send mail out and both yahoo and gmail client confirms, yet a reply shows nothing, and nothing ever shows in the maillog. Firewall is shut down but I don't know postfix enough to see how to test, or is something else grabbing the mail.
I can provide anything necessary, just let me know what. As I see it (just so far) Postfix should be the server that answers and receives the mail, dovecot is more the pop/imap the client would use, so I think it's a postfix issue. If so, can I turn up the debugging, etc. but again, I think all mail received should appear in the maillog file 1st as I see the outbound mail go fine!
i had configures sendmail and dovecote in rhel 5.3, as it was working fine with pop3 and imap, but it will not work for pop3s and imaps .the cerificate is chked with mutt it is fine , on client side i use outlook express/Thunderbird . the ports status shown as listening . moreover the certificate was not trusted by the clients. is there any more setting i have to do .

This happened during the bump from 1.1.4 to 1.2.0 (in F11), but now nobody can login into the mail server.
The strace of dovecot-auth says that it sends messages over an AF_NETLINK socket before failing. Why in the world would it do that?
