OpenSUSE :: 3d Effects Not Working In KDE
Aug 1, 2010The 3d effects are working in Gnome but not in KDE.
View 3 RepliesThe 3d effects are working in Gnome but not in KDE.
View 3 RepliesI did an update to KDE 4.5 recently, and afterwards noticed that 3D effects were no longer enabled. When I try to enable them from desktop settings, I get a pop up in the panel that says another application is preventing compositing (or something like that).
I have the nvidia 256.53 drivers installed and 'glxinfo' says direct rendering is on. I'm also using X server 1.9, but compositing was working with the new X server before I did the update to 4.5.
I just switched back to the open source radeon driver, since the kernel update may have messed with fglrx for the proprietary driver. if i boot into nomodeset then i have desktop effects, however when i boot regularly, the desktop effects are off and do not work.ATI radeon mobile graphics HD4200; opensuse 11.3
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a notebook with an Nvidia Quadro NVS 130M. Desktop effects were working on OpenSUSE 11.2. Last week I upgraded to OpenSUSE 11.3, and now desktop effects do not work. When I try to enable them, a box pops up that says something like "desktop effects are not supported on your hardware / configuration. Do you want to try anyway?". If I "try anyway", it does NOT work - I get a jumbled screen that is mostly black, but sometimes objects appear when I mouse over them.
I have the proprietary nvidia drivers (version 256.53) loaded and working (nvidia kernel module loaded, Nvidia splash screen on X server startup, correct lines found in Xorg.0.log).
The Composite option is enabled:
Never-the-less, I still cannot enable the desktop effects.
OpenSuSE 11.1 updated on Saturday to all of the latest patches and stuff. I was a bit behind, so quite a few things got updated. Most of them probably don't matter for this problem.
Prior to Saturday, desktop effects were working fine. After, they don't. Gnome still works ok, but attempting to go in to the "Desktop Effects" configuration just hangs for a minute (spinning "wheel" cursor) then nothing happens ("arrow" cursor returns).
Looking at things via "ps ax" I can see that clicking on "Desktop Effects" starts process(/usr/bin/python /usr/bin/simple-ccsm).
Running this from a CLI produces:
After which nothing happens and I have to hunt down the PID and kill it.
Searching for this "tuple index out of range" error, I found a couple of 2008 references, but those are for much older version so I'm thinking that they're probably not relevant. Nothing else seems to apply.
I'm using Fedora 10 on my HP Pavillion Dv6 series laptop. VGA is nVidia. I checked the nVidia and they have a driver for Fedora Linux. But when I tried to install this driver it says my driver is not compatible with my kernel version. But I had the latest kernel. and further can't I upgrade my kernel after installing this driver if it works?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using Kubuntu 10.10, and I have an Nvidia GT 320M with driver version 260.19.12 (updated from 260.19.09 i think) on my laptop. Suddenly, my desktop effects stopped working, and the window borders and window manipulation buttons are getting mixed up with everything else when i mouseover them or click on them (I guess some desktop effect I had is malfunctioning or not functioning at all?). Under System Settings -> Desktop Effects, I can only see grey'd out options, which won't let me enable desktop effects.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been running an emerald theme in compiz for few months now and everything was running fine when a couple days ago VLC started acting weird and playing little static clicks every few seconds. Then the next time I booted up after an initial second of flashing my full desktop the screen blanked off a section on the left and bottom of my screen. When I logged in docky told me it was having trouble with the compositing, but when I scrolled over the spot where my docks are they were there. My arrow can be seen in the black areas as can the start panel when I scroll over it, but aside from that it is black and when I open I window the blackness covers it in that part. None of my compiz effects seem to be working.
I am running a pretty basic motherboard and I know basically nothing about this kind of thing but I looked up the built in integrated video card online : ATI Radeon - HD3000 Graphics, On Board Graphic Max. Memory Share Up to 512 MB. I have an ATI driver installed but when I look at my drivers it says it is installed but not currently in use. When I look at my visual effects page it is on none, so I tried changing it to normal and it says the effects can't be enabled. I am running a dual boot with windows and when I go into windows there doesn't seem to be any problems. I am running a Biostar A760G M2+, an AMD AthlonII x4 and running Ubuntu 10.04.
Still new to Ubuntu, and I've installed it on my laptop tonight (Alienware M11x, Ubuntu 11.04). I've got it pretty much how I want it, but I'm stuck with a CCSM/Compiz question.I have Compiz installed, along with the extra plugins (burn, etc).However, when I try to enable any effects, I get nothing as a result.I've rebooted, enabled both Gnome and KDE compatiblities, etc- nothing will work.I'm still learning the ins-and-outs of the terminal/command line system.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI hope this is the correct section. I have recently updated to 10.04 and now Compiz/desktop effects wont work. When I try to turn visual effects on I get a message saying they could not be enabled. I'm a bit new to all this so not sure if I'm doing something wrong.I've looked at many threads regarding this problem and nothing they say has worked. iv tried using Hardware Drivers (in systems administration) but this says "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system".
Also I don't know whether this effects anything but when I open NVIDIA X Server Settings (in systems administration) i get a message saying "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."Does anyone know how I can get Compiz/desktop effects working?.
Since the last driver error I had posted the thread was starting to drift WELL off the original issue so now I am opening a new thread since it IS a whole different problem in general;So, I was having issues with my driver not being enabled. After I installed it manually it appeared to be correct how-ever when I ttried to enable special effects, and compiz, it didn't work.And even after a correct installation of the driver some windows when they pop up look like static then appear.Graphics card is an:nVidia 6150SE onboard card.I know it can handle compiz, and effects, because it did before on the other version of ubuntu I had.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm a Fedora 11 user.....
When I try to enable Desktop effects it says:
Desktop effects could not be enabled.
I've installed compiz and the problem is still there.
The desktop effects on my system stopped working. They were working fine up to a couple of days ago. Now it says I need to check my configuration for xorg. How do you do that?
Also this appears to have started after another user was using my system and crashed it. They said that it just shut-off with no explanation as to what happened.
lspci -v shows this

How do I get back to the systems default drivers?
I do NOT wish to have to reinstall F14 yet again because the system has been very stable since the last install.
I'm not able to get the Desktop Effects/3D graphics to work on a Gateway laptop. I suspect that I'm not using the correct nvidia drivers but I don't know what drivers I need for my system.I followed the instructions from this link with no luck.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.04. I added the simple-ccsm package through apt-get. I like the new option I now have under the Visual Effects tab in Appearance Preferences. I can now choose None, Normal, Extra, or Custom. The problem is when I click the "Preferences" button beside custom nothing happens. It should open simple-ccsm. In fact if I try to run simple-ccsm from the terminal I get this;
/usr/bin/simple-ccsm:40: DeprecationWarning: Use the new widget gtk.Tooltip
Tooltips = gtk.Tooltips()
/usr/bin/simple-ccsm:182: DeprecationWarning: Use the new widget gtk.Tooltip
Tooltips = gtk.Tooltips()
/usr/bin/simple-ccsm:545: DeprecationWarning: Use the new widget gtk.Tooltip
Tooltips.set_tip(widget, _(("Can't find the animation plugin.")))
/usr/bin/simple-ccsm:415: DeprecationWarning: Use the new widget gtk.Tooltip

The regular compizconfig-settings-manager works fine and I actually prefer it. So my question is; can I bind the "Preferences" button to open ccsm instead of simple-ccsm? If not, how can I fix the simple-ccsm package?
Not quite sure what could be wrong here. The settings are enabled, but none of the compiz functions are working. The were working on Friday. I did some searching but I'm not even sure what the problem is, or how to diagnose it. I'm running 10.10, now.. any help is appreciated. Even if you just tell me what I need to be searching for to find a solution.

Im a new member here.So please don't get mad at me.If i posted on a wrong section(Am I in the right section?) By the way,Here is my problem. My graphic card is Intel 82852/82855.And it passes the Ubuntu Desktop Effects requirement. I am aware of enabling the graphic card in Ubuntu 10.10, Since enabling the drivers was successful. I enabled the desktop effects.After i switched to Normal(Graphic Mode)the screen went blank. Then after i clicked ALT+TAB. there is an option to keep this option or not.I clicked Keep this settings. Then i proceeded in Web browsing(because i'm a web addict). Then i click CTRL+ALT+LEFT/RIGHT For the workspaces to switch. Then i found this 4 square transparent with black margin boxes.Which has a weird distorting effect.That effect is going crazy. Then i rebooted(Hoping to fix the problem).Then it is still there.

when I click fullscreen in BBC iPlayer or ..... or whatever, the whole browser crashes instantly, no warning. And secondly my visual effects aren't working. When I go into Appearance and try and change from 'None' to 'Normal', it says 'Searching for available drivers' for about 20 seconds, and then says 'Desktop effects could not be enabled'.Both visual effects and fullscreen flash worked fine until about lunchtime today, and I honestly can't think of anything I did that would've changed setting or messed something up, so I really don't know.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with Xorg, I am not sure if the black screen is related, but sometimes when I am just using the computer, with heavy processor and memory, but sometimes not, but the title bars to the programs disappear, my compiz effects quit working, and the cairo dock becomes unusable, so I cannot switch windows, but I can close them using 'File > Close" to access the windows under the ones on top, and to fix it I have to switch over to a terminal "Ctrl + Alt + F2" and log into that to kill Xorg by "sudo top" and killing it with the PID.
And the Blanking Screen, I am just doing usual programming with Bluefish, Eclipse and the terminal, and the screen will just go black, and won't come on if I wiggle the mouse, press a key on the keyboard or turn it off and back on, the status light on the monitor stays green, and doesn't go to orange as if it were unplugged or the computer went idle, so I know that it is still communicating with the monitor, but the way I fix this is I have to manually power down the machine via the power button and turn it back on and it works normally for a while.
I am extremely new to Linux and cannot seem to get Compiz Fusion working. I am running Xubuntu 9.10. I enabled my video driver but the effects still aren't working.

I have always paid for new versions of SuSE, but I have just picked up 11.4 Open on a "Linux Format" magazine. Thought I might try it. Can I "upgrade" from a full-paid-for SuSE 11.1 to Open 11.4? And What are the effects? e.g. Do I lose any software? Am I likely to lose my e-mail (KMail)?I read in the forums that people have had trouble with devices (memory stick, hard drives)and with booting. Having used 11.1 for so long I have forgotten all of the "configuration" changes I have made over the years. PS: All 64 bit.
View 5 Replies View RelatedLast night I was playing around with Desktop Effects and set the composting engine to Xrender, it was openGL. And things started to slow down tremendously. There is now lag on Alt+F1, lag when mousing over hidden taskbar, lag when moving windows, etc. I was trying to get rid of a trail of images when moving windows around. I created more problems. Things got even better when I tried to change back to openGL:
"Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Setting will be reverted back to previous values. Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advancde options, especially changing the composting type." The same thing happens when I click on "Default", the default options disable desktop effects.
