OpenSUSE Multimedia :: 11.4 Mic Not Working?
Mar 26, 2011
After upgrading to 11.4 I can't get my mic to work. In 11.3 it "just worked". Originally I had 2 problems - no sound in Flash videos and mic not working. After uninstalling PulseAudio, Flash is working, but still no luck with my mic. I've tried all the possible options in KMix and alsamixes and it's still like dead. The system is OpenSuse 11.4, KDE 4.6, 64 bit.

Mp3s are playing nicely, so does the test sound with Yast. I copied some outputs which you might need to help me figure out whats wrong with my settings.
The motherboard has an onboard sound chip (which I do not use), and I am actively using the PCI sound card (Aureon 5.1, CM8738).
The microphone is coming with the webcam Logitech E 3500 (which worked under 11.1, but updating to 11.2 keeps me without skype functionality).

I have a creative sound card (ca106 driver) detected and working. This is a 5.1 capable soundcard and i also have 5.1 speaker system. The sound card works, however, the problem is that only the front speakers are working. I have checked vlc settings, in which front speakers, centre and rear are seen as different devices.

Speakers are worming normally (sound okay) but when headphones are plugged in no sound is produced but the speakers are turned off. The headphones work on a different computer and work under windows 7 on this laptop. I tried to obtain the mmcheck script from one of the threads but can't find it anywhere on openSUSE site.

Sound was working just fine in my opensuse 11.2 install until recently. Now it looks like applications can't find the sound server. Under "Control Center" -> Sound it says "Waiting for sound system to respond" forever and doesn't go anywhere. In audacious it has error "alsa error No suitable mixer element found". Now my VirtualBox also gives an error about sound issue. All of these were working just fine early Yesterday.I installed bunch of updates given by YAST yesterday. Could something have messed this up? It is very annoying when sound system was working just fine before and now it suddenly doesn't! Sound like some from windows!

Gnash is not working in any browser. The only thing working is playing separate music tracks. Video with sound works only in Chrome, but full screen is not available and its very buggy. What to do? Don't want to use Adobe Flash, it's even more buggy, even with music files. Full screen also doesn't work good, although video plays in every browser.

I've managed to install openSuse 11.4, and have also managed to get the sound working properly, but the mic doesn't seem to be working.
My system is a hp mini 110 3000 netbook which came pre installed with windows 7. I'd install ubuntu on this before switching to openSuse, and in ubuntu the mic was working.
Also, I can't get bluetooth and the sd card reader working. I've got the ath9k driver installed, and WLAN works perfectly on that, but bluetooth doesn't.

I'm having problems with my sound on opensuse 11.4 (64 bit). From most applications I can simply get no sound at all. I followed the following guides:
- SDB:Audio troubleshooting - openSUSE
- SDB:Intel-HDA sound problems - openSUSE
Sometimes when I do
Code:
speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav
or when I click 'Play Test Sound' in yast, I do hear the test sound, but most of the time I don't. The volume icon on my system tray also disappears randomly, but this doesn't seem to effect whether my sound is working or not.
I have also deleted and re-added my sound card in yast>sound, to no effect.
Some information that may be relevant:

This is a very new desktop system using an ASUS mainboard with built on sound. I've never had sound working properly and have re-installed many times. One sound will play (KDE4 desktop sound, Amarok audio, even games under WINE) but when a second sound plays, it stops the first one (and plays perfectly), but then the first app is no longer able to play sound. I tried to get Skype going today and have some very interesting results.
It works but on a test call my voice sounds like I'm going for the "Extortionist of the Year" award! Have a listen here if you feel like a quick laugh - [URL]. Great effect for issuing ransom demands, but not too useful when calling family. I recorded it via my camera so the quality is not fabulous, and the screeching noise is the from the birds in the background. Here is the requested information for diagnosing sound problems -

opensuse v11.3
linux 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop x86_64
After the latest round of updates approx Sep 10, sound has stopped working. (I rarely need sound for anything so it took a while to notice.) In Yast :: Hardware :: Sound it lists all of the devices that were previously defined.
- 0: SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)
- 1: RS780 Azalia controller
- 2: Logitech USB headset
- 3: USB Audio
Yet when I go to Gnome :: Control Center :: Hardware :: Sound and select the tab Hardware, nothing is listed. I suspect this is why there is no sound. How do I go about reloading the hardware into the hardware listing?

I've been playing around with the latest RC of 11.4. Overall, it works great, but just have 1 issue. No flash videos have audio. Video works just fine. I've tried installing both the flash-player package so that it loads the official 32-bit plugin through ndiswrapper, and tried downloading the Adobe Square 64-bit plugin and installing it. Doesn't make a difference, either way I have working video but not audio. Audio itself on the laptop works with no issues, I listen to Amarok all the time on it. Laptop in question is a Dell Latitude E5500. I've also had Debian Wheezy and Kubuntu 10.10 on here, both had no issues.

Just curious if someone could help me with my issue, I've noticed that my internal mic doesn't work, and when I plug in headphones it stops the use of the speakers but I hear nothing through the headphones. I'm running openSUSE 11.3 and have had almost no major problems until this. I've searched around and asked a couple friends and have made absolutely no progress.

I am having trouble getting sound working under a brand new install of OpenSUSE 11.3. I am new to both SUSE and anything that's not Debian based, so please understand if I'm not able to comprehend a lot of what you say quickly. After a successful install, I attempted to play an MP3 file. This did not work in Amarok, and installation of it would also not work. So I went to this site, openSUSE 11.3 | SUSE Linux | Beginner's guide to multimedia codecs MP3 DVD 3D nvidia ati wireless and installed the multimedia codecs and all that. While I was there I also installed the ATI driver for my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 onboard chip. After booting back up, x would not start, so I fixed that with a command. After finally getting into X, sound wouldn't work, and I con not figure out why. I know if it installed something the affects my audio.
