OpenSUSE Hardware :: Printing System Continuously Prints Same File?

Apr 1, 2010

I made a BIG mistake and tried to print a PDF document from Evince 2.28.2. Evince sends a garbage filled print job to the queue that results in nothing but garbage being printed. I noted the problem an tried to kill the print job but could not because it does not show up in the print queue. It appears that the printer sent an error back to the print system and the print system now continues to print the job forever - that is, anytime openSUSE is running, even after reboots.

Note that printing the test page works and that the printer also works fine with gedit and OpenOffice.

If I go to Control Center -> Printing then right click on the icon for the printer and click View Print Queue, the print queue is empty.

In YaST Control Center -> Printer -> Policies the "Specify error policy" is set to "abort and delete the job and proceed with the next job." The "Apply this error policy to all local printer configurations" checkbox was checked when this policy was set. If this is what should have ultimately killed the job it did not work.

how to stop the print system from trying to print this garbaged print job. It has been trying to print the same garbaged print job for the last five days!

General :: CPU Fan Running Continuously On A Laptop / Is It A Problem?

Sep 13, 2010

I have dual boot on my machine - Windows Vista and Fedora 12.

I have noticed that while I am on Vista, the fan runs only intermittently, but while I am on Fedora, it runs continuously. I have tried to tweak the power and CPU settings for Fedora, but did not get anywhere.

Should I be worried that the fan is running continuously? Or is it okay, the fan is just doing its job?

General :: Ubuntu 9.10 Suddenly Disk Drive Is Running Continuously - NonStop?

Apr 29, 2010

My system: Ubuntu 9.10/gnome Gateway SX2802 with Intel Q8300, 4GB ram, 750GB drive only 6 months old. My internal drive is read/writing continuously without stopping no matter what I am doing. It begins immediately after boot. It simply runs and runs nonstop. This is with NO APPLICATIONS running. This is a problem which cropped up suddenly after 5 months of running just fine. What I have tried:

1. Disconnecting Internet - no change

2. Looking at processes in System Monitor. Well, everything says "sleeping" and there isn't anything that looks obvious to me, but there are a LOT of processes. I am afraid my drive will simply burn up.

OpenSUSE :: Kwrite Continuously Crashes In SU?

Aug 26, 2010

I need to change attributes in my /etc/fstab file.

I cant change my fstab file because apparently Kwrite only crashes when accessed by Konsole in SU mode.

I type this input/output:

linux-mg28:/home/me # kdesu kwrite /etc/fstab
kdesu(13370): Session bus not found
KCrash: Application 'kdesu' crashing...
sock_file=/root/.kde4/socket-linux-mg28/kdeinit4__0

[Code]....

I have a dual XP/suse11.3 system. I even removed my old Suse along with all its partitions, leaving only the NTFS XP, re-downloaded the 11.3 ISO image, burned a new fresh install disk and reinstalled 11.3. I updated the software in YaST.

I still can't modify my fstab file. But I can locate the file in Dolphin and click it to open in a Kwrite window. Read only of course.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Sounds Mutes / Unmutes Continuously On ASRock M3A770DE

Aug 22, 2010

My sound keeps going on and off, with some variation but generally about twice a second. I can watch the speaker icon in the system tray with a red x appearing and going away. When I play anything the sound is very broken. I'm running on an ASRock M3A770DE uploaded my ALSA information: [URL]. I've tried a number of things to attempt to correct the problem, but nothing I've tried makes any difference.

This MB does have two separate sound devices, I think. This shows up in YAST/Hardware/Sound with one entry as "ATI Technologies Inc." and the other as "SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)". I've tried disabling each one separately, but that doesn't seem to make any difference. The description of the board says it has "7.1 CH Windows Vista, Premium Level HD Audio (VIA VT1708S Audio Codec)". I don't run Windows except in VMs, so I don't know what happens with this in Windows.

Furthermore, in Firefox the opening websites only works some of the time. Sometimes the google search page will load and sometimes it won't. I've disabled ipv6 using yast-network settings.

OpenSUSE Install :: Running 11.3 Live System On MacBook Air?

Jul 26, 2010

I am too stupid to run a live Linux on a Macbook air. I used both, an openSUSE 11.3-KDE Live-CD and a Live-USB key and tried several boot options.

(i) I held down "C" to boot from CD → didn't work. It's an Apple CD drive but came with an older Macbook air a few years ago.
(ii) Found the bootmenu by holding down the option (ALT) key. Neither Live-CD nor Live-USB were shown. You can only choose the harddrive (and available wireless networks).
(iii) "Command-Shift-Option-Delete" to boot from an external drive didn't work either. I assume my USB key is an external drive, right?

I don't want to install openSUSE on the mac I just want to run a live system from time to time. Therefore I want to bypass Boot Camp or rEFIt and that's probably why I am stuck here. I wonder, if I really have to setup one of them to boot into a live system? The wiki article "openSUSE on a Mac" is under review right now.

OpenSUSE :: GParted File System Support / Running Programs As Root

Sep 27, 2010

I have GParted installed, running openSUSE 11.3 with GNOME. When running GParted, it always grayed out most file system actions, supporting only hfs fully. This made no sense, as I had all the required packages installed for other file system support. However, I recently figured out how to get it to work. Using the installed menu button doesn't work, running "gnomesu /usr/sbin/gparted" doesn't work; to get it to work, I have to open up a terminal, type "su -" to log in as root, and then run gparted. The menu button and gnomesu both prompt for a password, so it should be running as root, but launching it through the root terminal is the only way to actually get it to work. Is one root different from another?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 Running On Samsung Q1EX - Working Configuration - Failed To Get Textmode Console

Sep 4, 2010

I needed to load Linux on a Samsung Q1Ex for a project I'm contracting on, and could not for the life of me get anything to run. Turns out that the video card is a chrome relative, and for some reason, almost every distro out there (I usually use debian for this sort of project - ie, no money, but use SLES at my day job) failed to even get to textmode console. Trying several distros, I finally put it out there and used OpenSuse and voila!, vga was working. After that, I got X running, and many hours later had the mouse working. The key to this device is Windows. I ended up parsing through the registry looking for "touch" and found that the software in use on Windows is eGalaxTouch. A quick google brought up their site where I found several Linux drivers. I used the beta mode drivers to get the mouse working. Here is a more detailed breakdown.

Use OpenSuse 11.3 (I used the full blown disc - its is the only distro I could get to boot correctly as the others all used OpenChrome, while OpenSuse seems to use fbdev - note here that installing the unichrome drivers will actually break X and cause you to have to reboot to get away from the mess on the screen). Use eGalaxyTouch drivers. The pdf's included in the download have step-by-step instructions but the big pieces are the setup.sh script and the serio_raw steps (note if you perform a 'hwinfo --bios | more' you can figure out which /dev/input/event* you're using - for me it was event1 and serio4). Note also to choose PS/2 when executing the setup.sh script provided in their download. eGalax_eMPIA Technology Inc. TouchKit Linux Driver Here is my xorg.conf now:

Section "ServerLayout"
InputDevice "EETI" "SendCoreEvents"
Identifier "X.org Configured"
Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection
[Code]....

On the video, just stay with the fbdev and you should be good. So far, I've had KDE, Gnome, TWM all running; and now have my EFL apps running! Woohoo! Next piece of the puzzle is to verify sound, but on the face of it, looks like the system recognized it off the bat. And of course one other note. 11.3 is going to make me a convert!

OpenSUSE Install :: Grub Error 18 - Unknown File System - Running From External Hard Drive

Jan 11, 2011

It started when I wanted to dual boot Windows 7 and Opensuse off of my netbook (No DVD/CD drive) I tried install suse from an external hard drive and I botched it. I ended up erasing EVERYTHING off of my internal netbook hard drive. Windows and all.

Well, I had a couple of other computers so I studied up and eventually successfully installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on my external hard drive (11.3 being the one that I accidentally erased everything with, so kinda scared of it) and now I want to install openSUSE 11.2 on my internal netbook hard drive.

I can not use disks

I can not use a flash drive (For some reason, even if I make it bootable, it will not load up, this could be because it's actually a 8GB microSD card that is placed in a USB card reader.)

I can not use an external hard drive because that's what I'm running suse off of.

I've tried reading up on how to install suse on another drive off of the hard drive and I've gotten as far as whenever I boot up the netbook with the suse external hard drive connected it will ask to boot into OpenSUSE, the Fail Safe, or to install OpenSuse. When I select to install it it gives me the Error 18 Unknown File system.

I've tried formatting the internal hard drive twice. One as NTFS and again as EXT4. Neither seems to effect it other than when it's ext4 I can open it and it contains a Lost and Found folder.

When I interrupt the boot sequence by pressing c and going to the terminal and I use the root (hd +TAB command it tells me I have a hd0 and a hd1. The hd1 only has 1 partition which is ext4, which I'm assuming hd1 is the internal hard drive (I'm not sure how to check) and the hd0 is the external hard drive, which has three partitions. One with an unknown file system and two with ext4. When I try to enter the set up from the terminal it gives me the same error for any thing I put it (e.g. root (hd0,0) gives the same error as root (hd0,1), or root (hd0,2) and root (hd1,0)

Something like it cannot locate these two files I'm assuming it needs to boot. If anyone finds this relevant I'll retry it and post the files its missing.

I've been searching for awhile and can't find any threads that can solve my problem. From other threads, however, I have noticed that I should probably include my menu.lst, listed below

Code:

I have also ran the boot info script and received the RESULTS.txt file it generates. Listed below

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Network Manager Stuck On 'setting Network Address' Then Continuously Prompts For Hex Or ASCII Key

May 28, 2011

When I attempt to connect to a wireless network, the network manager asks me for the network's password, then says 'setting network address' for 20 or so seconds, then asks me for some random Hex or ASCII key in the same type of window I put the password in (Secrets for Noel -- KDE Daemon). Since a key is already typed into the window, I press OK, which then causes the network manager to go back to 'setting network address', then the window pops up again and keeps repeating itself.

I'm running Opensuse 11.4 with KDE, and my driver is ath9k. I don't know much about linux so please don't tell me to 'recompile this' or 'change this setting' without explaining how to do it. Please help, I've been unable to connect to wireless in OpenSUSE for 2 weeks now.

OpenSUSE :: Version Of Evolution - Running The Evolution Mail System Under Fedora - 15 / KDE

Jul 26, 2011

I've been running the Evolution mail system under Fedora-15/KDE for about a month now, and it has some very serious problems. I just noticed that it is available for SUSE, and figured that since KDE is the principal desktop supported by KDE the SUSE version may be fixed. Before I go through the very tedious process of getting the SUSE version to compile on Fedora, I'd like to know whether anyone has seen these problems with the SUSE version of Evolution:It ignores font control from the KDE Settings->Applications Appearance window, both KDE font control and GTK+ font control, also its own internal font control window.

It has trouble sending messages to an SMTP server, sometimes taking a l-o-n-g time, sometimes timing out. This can be temporarily cured by restarting it It crashes when a filter attempts to refile an outgoing message. It often asks if I want to recover messages that have never been lost. It often locks up receiving mail from a remote POP3 server. I can live with these, except for items 1 and 2, since I have workarounds. If you are fairly sure that you have not seen these problems with the SUSE version of Evolution

Ubuntu :: Internal Disk In A Running System Usb-booted System Does Not Result In The System Detecting The Disk

Feb 27, 2011

My system decided to crash on me, hard. It was humming along happily for about 2 months and now doesn't boot. If I boot from hard-disk, I get grub. Launching the first kernel choice hangs. I thought maybe the install was corrupt, so I booted from usb install disk. The usb hdd didn't boot; something about an error trying to access /dev/sda . Unplugging the internal disk and plugging in the usb install disk does result in the system booting. Plugging in the internal disk in a running system usb-booted system does not result in the system detecting the disk.

How do I know if the disk is physically broken? This seems unlikely since it does manage to launch grub consistently. Or is this still possible? How can I try to mount whatever is left? The usb install disk doesn't even list the /dev/sd*. Any pointers on how to reformat the drive if it's not being mounted?

OpenSUSE Network :: NFS Automount Stopped Working - System Error: Connection Refused

Jul 6, 2010

I got connecting to our NAS over NFS working perfectly. Direct NAS Reading & Writing - How? But on Saturday I found out it had stopped working. For no apparent reason, not straight after an update either I don't think. When I manually try to mount --verbose:

mount 192.168.100.14:/IHL /mnt/IHL --verbose
mount: no type was given - I'll assume nfs because of the colon
mount.nfs: timeout set for Tue Jul 6 14:48:32 2010
mount.nfs: text-based options: 'addr=192.168.100.14'
mount.nfs: Unable to connect to 192.168.100.14:111, errno 111 (Connection refused)
mount.nfs: mount to NFS server '192.168.100.14:/IHL' failed: System Error: Connection refused

Corresponding fstab line that used to work just fine. 192.168.100.14:/IHL /mnt/IHL nfs auto 0 0 For now, I can drop back to Samba but this is a PITA as I can't open OpenOffice documents and write to them directly on the NAS. The fact smb://192.168.100.14/IHL works proves networking wise we're cool too. There is no firewall between this PC and the NAS, the NAS is instructed to allow my PC's LAN IP full access. OpenSuse's software firewall has been told to allow NFS Client too. Why would this setup break out of nowhere? How can I debug this best? I see nothing relevant in /var/log/messages How can I get it to work again? A hopeful reboot didn't do its usual wonders...

Programming :: Continuously Polling A Specified Key?

Nov 23, 2010

In a lot of programs I write, I would love the option to simply hit a key without disturbing the data, and have some other action take place.

An example loop would be,

Code:
for(some var = 0; some var != infinity; some var++){
if(poll(left mouse button)){ stop doing this stuff; }
.
.
.
doing other stuff, because the left mouse button wasn't pressed
}

but, I don't want the loop to pause for more than a the tiniest fraction of a second, and I certainly don't want it to sit there waiting for me to do, or not do, something.

What is it I'm looking for?

(Oh, and if you haven't guessed, c/c++ are the languages of choice for this operation - I don't care which you might have in mind when submitting an answer -- in fact, it need not be either of those languages.)

General :: Ssh: Continuously Synchronize Files, One Way?

Aug 1, 2011

Scenario: An IDE is set up on a Linux desktop box, editing PHP files locally. Every time I save a file, I want this change to appear on the linux server where Apache is running. The server has ssh (and samba and nfs for that matter). As a reference, when I edited files on Windows, I finally came over WinSCP as the exact tool I needed - WinSCP have just this feature present, with initial synch and then continuous update, using the filesystem watch service: "Keep Remote Directory up to Date".

On Linux, one could argue that sshfs could be employed to sidestep the need for synchronization entirely. On windows, a samba-share would do the same. However, I want the IDE to work with local files (on a SSD disk!), not having to go over the network to do PHP indexing and whatnots, which takes ages. But sshfs might be a part of the solution nevertheless - so that the continuous synchronization just needed to be done between two local directories.
