I just setup dovecot to use imap. I'm using the same cert and key that I'm using on Postfix smtp over ssl. It's a self signed cert. After running this

I'm somewhat familiar with Linux and became pretty decent at installing and configuring packages in Ubuntu. One of the things I was able to do with my tinkering was set up a functioning imap and pop3 mail server using dovecot-postfix. Now I'm experimenting with Slackware to get the feel of another distro, and I noticed that the mail server packages were already installed. On my client computer they can pick up that I have users configured and my mx record is working.
However it is failing to send mail saying that it is failing to relay the e-mail message and that the server responded 5.7.1 which was a problem that I was having in Ubuntu when first configuring the mail server. The fix was to edit the postfix.conf file and adding the localhost name of my server. Does anybody know of the file that I need to edit to make it possible to relay my messages with both pop3 and imap.
I want to connect my blackberry mobile phone to connect with my Sendmail / Dovecot service... Is it require some extra settings??
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am having some trouble finding the information i need, here is what i am trying to accomplish.
1. Download POP email messages from cody@clearsky.net.au using fetchmail and assigning them to account "cody"
2. Connect and view the emails via IMAP using dovecot server logging in using "cody"
So far i have the fetchmail part working fine, but i cannot see any emails in the inbox. The messages are going thru however as they are visable in MUTT. i have edited my /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf to change the mail directories, but no luck
i have some problems to start my dovecot server. I tried to install it from webmin using "un-used modules" but it was allways the same error: "E: Unable to locate package dovecot-pop3d".When I tried to install it from console using the commands: apt-get install dovecot-imapd dovecot-pop3d dovecot-common - and there are no problems with dovecot-imapd and dovecot-common, but still the same error with dovecot-pop3d. After command: service dovecot status: could not access PID file for dovecot ... failed!
After try to start dovecot with comand "dovecot": Error: mail_executable: Can't use /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3: No such file or directoryFatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.confI've read a few similar threads in this forum about dovecot errors but still can't to fix it.
Does anyone know if there are only personal preferences between the two IMAP servers or does one of a slight advantage over the other? I've used Dovecot only in the past but my package manager loads tons of MySQL libraries with Dovecot which is a problem since that's not authorized on my server right now. I can either install it from source or try another application like Courier.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi had configures sendmail and dovecote in rhel 5.3, as it was working fine with pop3 and imap, but it will not work for pop3s and imaps .the cerificate is chked with mutt it is fine , on client side i use outlook express/Thunderbird . the ports status shown as listening . moreover the certificate was not trusted by the clients. is there any more setting i have to do .

So, here it is : I have a working imap server (dovecot), installed following the guide provided here [url]. I can successfully telnet it, or ssl it (from localhost or from another ip of my local network). I can even use my thunderbird from another local computer. Well, for me it is working fine.
Then I installed roundcube (0.3.1-3) with synaptic, but I cannot connect to my localhost imap server.
I have set auth as plain ($rcmail_config['imap_auth_type'] = 'plain';)
Looking in my dovecot log, i see two different behaviour. One is when it seems correct, and roundcube log in imap server, but is disconnect immediately :
Second is when server is refusing the password :
I am working with a plain text passwd, with no encryption at all. Does roundcube encrypt the password I type before to sent it to imap ?
I cannot explain the first behaviour, when roundcube sometimes managed to connect but disconnect immediately. I manage ONE time to reach my mailboxes, but i don't know how, and this never happens again.
I am running SquirrelMail version 1.4.8-5.el5.centos.10 on a CentOS 5.6 64-bit distribution with MailScanner 4.83.4, Sendmail 8.13.8/8.13.8, and Dovecot 1.0.7 release. One user is having problems connecting via the SquirrelMail interface to his e-mail. Whenever he tries to connect, he gets the following error message:

I have tested another user account, and that user is able to connect without issue. I confirmed the presence of dovecot.index, dovecot.index.cache, and dovecot.index.log files in the user's <HOME DIR>/mail/.imap/INBOX folder. I'm running Dovecot version dovecot-1.0.7 on CentOS 5.4. I'm trying to create subfolders and I can't. I've tried Mac's mail application and Thunderbird; they both come up with an error, basically saying that the server doesn't support level one folders(subfolders). Squirrelmail can't create subfolders neither. I did some reading and thought that perhaps the problem lies in the /etc/dovecot.conf file; specifically with the "mail_location" directive. I currently don't have that directive active which means Dovecot uses defaults settings: saving users' mail in the %u/mail folder. Is there any way to configure Dovecot to use subfolders?

CentOS 5 box was just setup to replace a crashed old one. I have postfix.admin installed and working, added users (confirmed from mysql command line) and can login using telnet server pop3 with the user information. The problem I am left with is just receiving mail. I have both squirrelmail and roundcube installed, and can also authenticate using both (/var/log/maillog shows);From either webclient I can naturally send mail out and both yahoo and gmail client confirms, yet a reply shows nothing, and nothing ever shows in the maillog. Firewall is shut down but I don't know postfix enough to see how to test, or is something else grabbing the mail.
I can provide anything necessary, just let me know what. As I see it (just so far) Postfix should be the server that answers and receives the mail, dovecot is more the pop/imap the client would use, so I think it's a postfix issue. If so, can I turn up the debugging, etc. but again, I think all mail received should appear in the maillog file 1st as I see the outbound mail go fine!
I have a Postfix+Dovecot and virtual users setup taken from here. I've got virtual users authenticating using a password file. But I'd like to lock the service down further, so authenticated users can only email other authenticated users (those listed in the same password file) - so it's a closed community. I don't seem to be able to stop authenticated users mailing outside the community.

service dovecot restart
shows me :
service imap stop
service imap start
In the config file, I have :

and of course, I cannot connect as pop3
For 3 days now I've been trying to setup a CentOS box with Apache, PHP, MySQL and iRedMail (Postfix/Dovecot) Everything is great apart from Apache, which is returning 403 errors: "You don't have permission to access / on this server.". The apache error_log file says: "[Mon Jul 26 14:02:32 2010] [error] [client x.x.x.x] (13)Permission denied: access to / denied" (I've blanked out my IP). I have no idea what's happening here. Apache works fine until I add my VirtualHost which is:

My actual mail is via pop3 from verizon. What I've done so far is just pull my pop3 mail onto my main machine at my house. But I'm finding I'd rather have a single imap server on my network so then all my machines could see the same mail.
I don't really want the imap server to poll verizon for mail, I just want the imap server to check pop3 mail at verizon only when one of my mail apps checks into it to look for mail.
Setup my postfix mail server and courier-imap/pop. My postfix server now is working with tls and saslauthd, I can send/receive email inside my domain as well as outside. However, I need two separate smtp and imap/pop3 server, I mean two machine - one with smtp function and one with imap/pop3 function working together.

-Squirrelmail-1.4.2.tar.gz and unzipped under the folder /var/www/html
-cd squirrelmail-1.4.2
-cd config
-within this directory, ./conf.pl
-From main menu, I did choose 2 for domain (i.e. arafapparels.com). This is my official domain
-Then save and exit
-For IMAP setting, I did choose D
-Selected uw and save, then exit
-Then from command line, I wrote chown �R apache.apache /var/www/html/data (I created folder data in the above path)
-I created a folder named as attach to keep attachment in /var/www/html i.e. /var/www/html/attach
-Then typed grep �R apache /var/www/html/attach
-Then typed chmod 730 /var/www/html/mail/attach (Here squirrelmail-1.4.2 directory has been moved to mail directory)
-Then from web browser/Internet explorer, I typed http://localhost/mail/
-Here Username & Password appears. Previously I have created username.
-But when put Username & Password, below error message displays

But I gave permission by chmod 777 /var/www/html/mail and by using 555 but no result.
I've been running Courier IMAP for many years now, but when I added gmail's IMAP to my Outlook I noticed something interesting: when you delete a message, it gets thrown into the trash instantly.
With Courier IMAP (or any other IMAP server, for that matter), when you delete, it first marks it for deletion. Then after you Purge Deleted Messages it either gets rid of them or moves them to trash.
Is there a way to implement this in Courier IMAP?
I'm looking for a method to sync my calendars on my IMAP server with both my Thunderbird/Lightning any my Blackberry. I found "IMAP Calendar Proxy" here recently, but it has been inactive for 5 years. I've seen people suggesting the use of services like Plaxo and such, but I don't like the idea of a third party messing with my calendars and contacts. Also, I've had to remove several viruses from computers with Plaxo, and I'm not sure if it in itself is a virus or not..... It certainly is a thorn in my side as is. This is for my personal IMAP server, so I'd prefer a free solution even if it is more difficult to install than a paid version. I mainly need it to just sync my calendar to my Blackberry and Thunderbird and couldn't care less about the contacts.
I've been Googling for things for quite some time now, and haven't really found anything that says that it will work with Blackberry and Thunderbird. They really only give a sense of maybe with nothing really defined. I can put on an Ubuntu server to sync everything? I don't want to leave my computer on all the time, and RIM has yet to come out with something decent to sync Blackberries and Thunderbird properly as far as I know.
I am trying to set up a mail server on centos5 using sendmail and dovecot, and eventually spamassassin and some antivirus filter as well. I'd also like to get the proper secure auth mechanism set up at some point too. But for starters, I've been having a lot of difficulty trying to even connect to the mail server from a client computer in the local network. I installed Eudora on the client and after some tweaking in dovecot I was able to connect to the mail server, but then when I try to send an email I get a "connection refused" error, with nothing being logged on the server that I can see.
The last time I set up a mail server was Fedora Core 2, so the configuration files have changed a bit to say the least, and I can't really refer back to those to set up this new server. Does anybody know of a good step-by-step doc on getting the mail server going? I've read the man pages and other various readme's, but these really only list out the available options with no really good explanation of what needs to be done to get the mail server going. If there isn't a full write-up on how to do this, I'll put something together when I'm finished so others can use it in the future.
I need the IMAP IDLE features but I really prefer the POP way to manage my email. It is really important that all the email I download on my email client is automatically removed from the server but stored locally on my machine. As you have noticed this is the usually behaviour that all email client assumes with the POP server. Since I need the IMAP IDLE I can't use POP, do you know an email client that let me use an IMAP server like a POP one?
