General :: Failed To Start Dovecot POP3/IMAP Server?
May 13, 2011i have some problems to start my dovecot server. I tried to install it from webmin using "un-used modules" but it was allways the same error: "E: Unable to locate package dovecot-pop3d".When I tried to install it from console using the commands: apt-get install dovecot-imapd dovecot-pop3d dovecot-common - and there are no problems with dovecot-imapd and dovecot-common, but still the same error with dovecot-pop3d. After command: service dovecot status: could not access PID file for dovecot ... failed!
After try to start dovecot with comand "dovecot": Error: mail_executable: Can't use /usr/lib/dovecot/pop3: No such file or directoryFatal: Invalid configuration in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.confI've read a few similar threads in this forum about dovecot errors but still can't to fix it.

Aug 22, 2010I am trying to setup Postfix along with dovecot on RHEL4. I have done the necessary settings in dovecot.conf, yet I am not able to log into the POP3 server. The error I can see through WireShark/Ethereal is "Err- Authentication failed" Some of the important settings in /etc/dovecot.conf are
disable_plaintext_auth = no
auth_mechanisms = plain
auth_userdb = passwd
auth_passdb = pam
auth_user = root
The users/passwords are setup on Linux file system without MQSql or any other database. SASL etc is not configured at all.

Mar 19, 2011Few days ago we had a server maintenance. The system was shutdown, we fix the CPU fan, and start the system again. But somehow when the system starts, our IMAP server - dovecot is not running. It just sit like a rock. Because the machine had a CPanel/WHM, I tried to restart dovecot using cpanel and got a message:

The problem: Apr 27 17:29:21 mxkasib dovecot: lda: Error: userdb lookup: connect(/var/run/dovecot/auth-userdb) failed: Permission denied (euid=8(mail) egid=12(mail) missing +w perm: /var/run/dovecot/auth-userdb, euid is not dir owner)
Obviously, dovecot-lda, instanced by postfix, couldn't access the auth-userdb file because of permission. There are plenty of topics over the internet, the problem is really simple. Except for I've got all the permissions needed, or it seems to me so and I'm missing something. Here is some additional information:

1. Download POP email messages from cody@clearsky.net.au using fetchmail and assigning them to account "cody"
2. Connect and view the emails via IMAP using dovecot server logging in using "cody"
So far i have the fetchmail part working fine, but i cannot see any emails in the inbox. The messages are going thru however as they are visable in MUTT. i have edited my /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf to change the mail directories, but no luck

General :: Setup A Functioning Imap And Pop3 Mail Server Using Dovecot-postfix?
May 4, 2010I'm somewhat familiar with Linux and became pretty decent at installing and configuring packages in Ubuntu. One of the things I was able to do with my tinkering was set up a functioning imap and pop3 mail server using dovecot-postfix. Now I'm experimenting with Slackware to get the feel of another distro, and I noticed that the mail server packages were already installed. On my client computer they can pick up that I have users configured and my mx record is working.
However it is failing to send mail saying that it is failing to relay the e-mail message and that the server responded 5.7.1 which was a problem that I was having in Ubuntu when first configuring the mail server. The fix was to edit the postfix.conf file and adding the localhost name of my server. Does anybody know of the file that I need to edit to make it possible to relay my messages with both pop3 and imap.

The enclosing drive for the volume is locked.
Fedora was install and everything seems to be working so far. I Couldn't find any info about this error online.

May 4, 2011I think the installation caused the corruption of the partition table. I removed the last 3 logical partitions and gparted correctly reported the 2 remaining distros and the swap. The problem hopefully will be solved when I reinstall those distros. I have a 160 gig HD with 3 Linux,1 swap,and a Windows partition. I attempted to install PCLINUXOS unsuccessfully. When I rebooted I had the same grub. I checked gparted and it indicated all 160 gigs as unallocated. fdisk shows the partitions. and indicates one partition as empty where I attempted to install PCLOS.
No problem in accessing any of my distros, but currently I can't make any changes to my HD. I've tried parted magic and there was no solution there. I have been unable to download the Ubuntu Rescue remix. Is there a way to restore? I haven't used fdisk or cfdisk for that purpose. I am beginning to think I would need to delete all of the partitions in the extended.

Mar 20, 2011I just tried to updated my UBUNTU 10.04 to 10.10.I missed the page where I was asked to reuse the current GRUB information.The system hung after trying to load the new GRUB.I rebooted, and got an error about Configuration defaults for gnome power configuration not correct.I googled this, and have lost of disk space. The other suggestion was to remove and reinstall the gnome power app.I am not sure if this is the real problem, or if it is something to do with GRUB.There is some information on the system that I don't want to loose. I can get to a system console.
