Does anyone know if there are only personal preferences between the two IMAP servers or does one of a slight advantage over the other? I've used Dovecot only in the past but my package manager loads tons of MySQL libraries with Dovecot which is a problem since that's not authorized on my server right now. I can either install it from source or try another application like Courier.
View 4 RepliesI've been running Courier IMAP for many years now, but when I added gmail's IMAP to my Outlook I noticed something interesting: when you delete a message, it gets thrown into the trash instantly.
With Courier IMAP (or any other IMAP server, for that matter), when you delete, it first marks it for deletion. Then after you Purge Deleted Messages it either gets rid of them or moves them to trash.
Is there a way to implement this in Courier IMAP?
how to install Courier IMAP server and they all say the same thing, but they keep giving me problems.URL... is a link to the page I'm working on.I created the user, edited sudoers manually since I can't effectivly use visudo in the terminal since I don't know how to save. I also made sure that I restarted after I edited it in order to make sure it took effect. I used su compileuser and just logging in as compileuser and opening a terminal. After I made the user and edited that file, I created the directory mentioned and ran the command to create .rpmmacros. After that I got to work on wgetting the files and installing them and what not. The first one compiled and installed and so did the last one. The command "rpmbuild -ta courier-imap4.6.0.tar bz2" would not go though properly. This one I need to run as a non-root user and I've tried using every way possible to be as distant from root as possible, but it still gives me this at the end.

I've installed a mail server per the instructions at [url].
Neither POP nor IMAP test successfully with the user that I just added after following the setup instructions.
This doesn't make any sense. I added the user to the mysql database:

And after I did that, I ran the postfix reload command. If I try to log in as firstuser@mydomain.com, which is the user I created during the setup and configuration process, it works fine.
I checked the virtual mail account's home folder, and under the mydomain.com folder, I only see a folder for firstuser. I'd create one for testuser manually, but I don't know if that'll work since it seems to contain a particular folder structure of its own.
Is there some other command that I have to run? I don't recall having to do anything additional when setting up firstuser.
I am administrating a server with CentOS installed. It came with qmail and courier-imap preinstalled, and Plesk.I need to manually add email accounts outside of Plesk, because my 1-domain Plesk license only allows the creation of one email address (yes, it sucks).
When I say add email account I mean creating a new email address, have email for that address be stored in its maildir, and have a corresponding imap (and hipefully also pop3) account that will be able to read that mail. All this with virtual domains.I've already found out how to create the new email addresses for qmail, so that email for the new email address is being delivered correctly. Now I need to create the imap/pop3 accounts for courier.
For the qmail part, I create a folder in in /var/qmail/mailnames/virtualdomain.org/username and a maildir called Maildir inside it. This is how the first mail address was created by Plesk and i'd like to maintain the same structure. As I've said, the qmail part is already working, I need to get the courier-imap part to work. Ideally, it should accept login with both short (i.e. myuser) and long (i.e. myuser@virtualdomain.org) user names.
Currently the only authentication module that is enabled in courier-imap is authpsa, which is Plesk's authentication module.in order to add more authentication modules, do I just need to add them to the authentication module list in /etc/courierimap/imapd, or do I need to reinstall courier-imap with support for such authentication modules? I thought I would only need to add them to the list, but I've noticed that the /usr/lib/courier-imap/authlib/ folder only contains a binary called "authpsa". Does that mean that other authentication modules are not even installed? If so, can I install them without reinstalling courier?
The second question is, what would be the most recommended authentication module that would make it easiest to create new email addresses/accounts from the command line? I need to be able to write a shell scripts capable of creating a new email address with all that is needed, and I'd like to keep this script as simple as possible, so for example I'd avoid mysql-based authentication as it sounds rather complicated. And the last question is, if I do need to reinstall courier-imap, how can I install a package without recompiling it? Will my one existing mailbox keep working?
I setup a qmail on a Debian 5 Lenny server with courier-imap server. I can send mails but cannot receive mails. I altered /etc/init.d/qmail as follows.

However, I need two separate smtp and imap/pop3 server, I mean two machine - one with smtp function and one with imap/pop3 function working together.

One user is having problems connecting via the SquirrelMail interface to his e-mail. Whenever he tries to connect, he gets the following error message:

I confirmed the presence of dovecot.index, dovecot.index.cache, and dovecot.index.log files in the user's <HOME DIR>/mail/.imap/INBOX folder. The /var/log/maillog files do not list any apparent error messages with SquirrelMail.
i have some problems to start my dovecot server. I tried to install it from webmin using "un-used modules" but it was allways the same error: "E: Unable to locate package dovecot-pop3d".When I tried to install it from console using the commands: apt-get install dovecot-imapd dovecot-pop3d dovecot-common - and there are no problems with dovecot-imapd and dovecot-common, but still the same error with dovecot-pop3d. I'm running Dovecot version dovecot-1.0.7 on CentOS 5.4. I'm trying to create subfolders and I can't. I've tried Mac's mail application and Thunderbird; they both come up with an error, basically saying that the server doesn't support level one folders(subfolders). Squirrelmail can't create subfolders neither. I did some reading and thought that perhaps the problem lies in the /etc/dovecot.conf file; specifically with the "mail_location" directive. I currently don't have that directive active which means Dovecot uses defaults settings: saving users' mail in the %u/mail folder. Is there any way to configure Dovecot to use subfolders?

Starting Dovecot Imap: Fatal: Protocol pop3 given more than once
I'm somewhat familiar with Linux and became pretty decent at installing and configuring packages in Ubuntu. One of the things I was able to do with my tinkering was set up a functioning imap and pop3 mail server using dovecot-postfix. Now I'm experimenting with Slackware to get the feel of another distro, and I noticed that the mail server packages were already installed. On my client computer they can pick up that I have users configured and my mx record is working.
However it is failing to send mail saying that it is failing to relay the e-mail message and that the server responded 5.7.1 which was a problem that I was having in Ubuntu when first configuring the mail server. The fix was to edit the postfix.conf file and adding the localhost name of my server. Does anybody know of the file that I need to edit to make it possible to relay my messages with both pop3 and imap.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed qmail on my 10.04 server (Because I prefer qmail and dont want to use postfix) and I would like to just install courier IMAP/POP server without the Postfix (Or other mail servers).
Is there an apt-get install switch that will install just what I want to install without deps; or at least a way to block unwanted deps from being installed.
I'm following the "The Perfect Server - Fedora12 x86_64 [ISPConfig 3]" instructions and I am encountering an error when trying to build the rpm for courier-imap (from page 4 of the HOWTO).

I have a problem connecting my roundcube to my imap server.
So, here it is : I have a working imap server (dovecot), installed following the guide provided here [url]. I can successfully telnet it, or ssl it (from localhost or from another ip of my local network). I can even use my thunderbird from another local computer. Well, for me it is working fine.
Then I installed roundcube (0.3.1-3) with synaptic, but I cannot connect to my localhost imap server.
I have set auth as plain ($rcmail_config['imap_auth_type'] = 'plain';)
Looking in my dovecot log, i see two different behaviour. One is when it seems correct, and roundcube log in imap server, but is disconnect immediately :
Second is when server is refusing the password :
I am working with a plain text passwd, with no encryption at all. Does roundcube encrypt the password I type before to sent it to imap ?
I cannot explain the first behaviour, when roundcube sometimes managed to connect but disconnect immediately. I manage ONE time to reach my mailboxes, but i don't know how, and this never happens again.
I want to connect my blackberry mobile phone to connect with my Sendmail / Dovecot service... Is it require some extra settings??

1. Download POP email messages from cody@clearsky.net.au using fetchmail and assigning them to account "cody"
2. Connect and view the emails via IMAP using dovecot server logging in using "cody"
So far i have the fetchmail part working fine, but i cannot see any emails in the inbox. The messages are going thru however as they are visable in MUTT. i have edited my /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf to change the mail directories, but no luck
For long-term migration from courier to dovecot I would like to install courier-pop and dovecot-pop3d simultaneously. Aptitude offers me to install one, by removing the other, only. Can this be done without creating problems for the package manager and future upgrades? And why if not?

I am having weird issues with courier IMAPD, the load goes like crazy at times and users mail client just hangs! The server is having 4 GB RAM Dual Core and around 700 users connected to 143 (via netstat) and I see around same amount of imapd's in process list. Mailbox stays in SAN (fiber).

I'm trying to get my server back up to snuff. I'm using Debian Squeeze right now and I'm up and atom with apache, mysql, php, pureftpd, ssh, and I have squirrelmail installed.
My dilemma comes with the mail part of the whole ordeal, Postfix and Courier are installed, have their keys made, and for what I assume, are configured correctly. HOW do I make new virtual users? My domain points to this machine as well as my MX record for mail.mydomain.com.
I need IMAP and POP working. And upon the creation of new email users, will SquirrelMail interface with Postfix and Courier? When I installed SM I set it up for use with Courier.

I'm looking for a method to sync my calendars on my IMAP server with both my Thunderbird/Lightning any my Blackberry. I found "IMAP Calendar Proxy" here recently, but it has been inactive for 5 years. I've seen people suggesting the use of services like Plaxo and such, but I don't like the idea of a third party messing with my calendars and contacts. Also, I've had to remove several viruses from computers with Plaxo, and I'm not sure if it in itself is a virus or not..... It certainly is a thorn in my side as is. This is for my personal IMAP server, so I'd prefer a free solution even if it is more difficult to install than a paid version. I mainly need it to just sync my calendar to my Blackberry and Thunderbird and couldn't care less about the contacts.
I've been Googling for things for quite some time now, and haven't really found anything that says that it will work with Blackberry and Thunderbird. They really only give a sense of maybe with nothing really defined. I can put on an Ubuntu server to sync everything? I don't want to leave my computer on all the time, and RIM has yet to come out with something decent to sync Blackberries and Thunderbird properly as far as I know.
I have had a mailserver die when it still had email that the users hadn't downloaded. I have build a new server an tried to copy the mail across but this caused a issue where users were unable to download any new email.
Is it possible to make the old undelivered email available for download?

i followed this tutorial to the "T", [URL]. I am not able to login to the mailboxes with squirrelmail, it says "connection dropped by imap server" I used the whole address as a login just like it said to do. I can sucessfully authenticate with outlook express but it throws an error that say's [URL], no such file or directory. i can telnet into it remotely but when i type ehlo [URL] it just keeps showing all the 250 lines and wont let me generate a message.
from what i saw on the comments on the tutorial and googling there are many other people with this problem, however i found no solutions. This is fresh work and i have not touched any config files since finishing the tutorial
