I recently installed Suse 11.4 (running KDE) and my first experiences with the new updater are not great. It seems to stall, require a lot of intervention, fail, and generally not behave nicely. I would much prefer to use zypper manually as I used to but can't find anywhere to disable this applet or process in KDE. Is there any way of disabling this so that the process and systray icon never start?
View 9 RepliesMy kupdate-applet tells me it has a recommended update: KDE 4.3.5 from the official opensuse update repo. Problem is I already have a more recent version of KDE 4.3.5 installed from the official opensuse KDE repo. In yast I pressed the "switch system packages" button for the KDE repo. How can I make the update applet ignore this "recommended" update? Note that the updateApplet itself is installed from the opensuse update repo. If I don't do this, then the older update applet from the KDE repo always has a recommended update for... Kupdate-applet.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy KPackageKit is not downloading any update, it shows updates, I click apply, I authenticate, then it asks me to accept an agreement, after which it returns to an empty KPackageKit (as if there were no updates). If I open it again, there are the possible updates again (naturally, since it didn't download anything).
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe package manager runs when a user clicks on a .rpm file automatically. I tried clicking on it from a normal user dolphin window and it opened up but since it can't install to a /something directory, I had to run it as su. So I try to open dolphin as su and then click on my file. I see the package editor starting up (bouncy icon and a space in the panel) but it never actually pops up a window. Now when I click on the file from either user this is happening. What's going on? Is this a bug?
**update, it popped up from normal user after like 10x attempts and it said that the repository already exists and this is an unexpected error. what does that mean? what errors are "expected"?
What's the best way to permanently disable the package kit update applet in fedora 12. i really dislike my bandwidth being robbed unnecessarily from the other computers running fedora on the network.

Another question is every time I click the accept button of the YaST2 window, it will install the packages and quit directly and never give any confirmation of the result. Is this normal?
The last question is when I use Amarok or qmmp to play music which be shared via Samba on my homeserver, the system always copy the music file to the local folder,/var/tmp, and then can begin to play rather than play it immediately by stream. Is this also normal?
I've found the following irritating problem with the default update applet in 11.4 (the one available in 'Software Management' in the KDE system settings):
Applet prompts to update the system, click Apply updates
Accept licence agreement for flash player update
The applet goes back to listing the available updates - ie. it doesn't run the update The workaround is to untick the flash player update, run the other updates and then do the flash player update by itself.
I am having an issue with KPackageKit, actually 2 issues but one makes it unusable. The major issue is that when I go to apply the updates I get the following error message (at least here are the details of the message)

I do not run my connection through a proxy and my internet works correctly. This is on a laptop I upgraded using zypper from 11.3 to 11.4 (I did the same with a desktop which does not have this issue). zypper refresh successfully refreshes the repositories, and the various Yast repo tools all work correctly. Additionally after I am shown the updates and am prompted for root pw, the packages will no longer show up for a while, each time it tries to look for updates the message comes through but they will show up after a while again. The other issue I have is that it requests my pw multiple times, this also happens on my desktop that actually will update. I get prompted twice, they are immediate and back to back. This one is a little minor annoyance but there should be no reason that it needs to make this request multiple times.
I use network manager applet 0.7.1. I had set the automatic wireless connection to my my wireless network (WPA key secured). Recently, I get the following problem: At the automatic connection, I get the message: Network manager applet (/usr/bin/mn-applet) needs default keyering. As I don't know what it is to type it and then, deny or OK, it doesn't get connected to my wireless network.

Now when I figured out how to put it back on the panel, I can't get it back to where it was (which was to the RIGHT of the system date/time applet). I was using both the Indicator Applet and the Notification Area applets in my panel but realized that very often when I started the system, the icons of these applet appeared mixed. Some items were duplicated (for example the keyboard indicator) where others were missing (sometimes the battery indicator, sometimes the sound indicator, etc). When that happened I had to remove them and add them to panel again.
This seems to be a bug that makes one applet interfere with the other (maybe because there are some items that appear in both but when you add both initially nothing is duplicated but after a system restart the problem happens).After searching for some way to fix this apparent bug without success I decided to remove the Indicator applet and keep just the Notification Area.
It works but then I don't have the sound applet anymore, because it was part of the Indicator Applet.
I searched for a standalone sound applet but I couldn't find any. Do you know of any such applet that I could install in the system? If I can find any it would be fine to me and I would be satisfied using just the Notification Area.
Had ubuntu for a few years left came back last month. I lost the indicator applet in the panel. I don't know what I did to get it back. I feel like this is a very very simple thing to fix but I just can't find it. Here is a pic of what i'm talking about.

Does anyone know where to get documentation for KPackageKit? I've searched on KDEs web site and this forum without success. Also on Fedora.org and googling but nothing so far.I recently loaded this distro (F13) to try it out after using mostly openSUSE and some of the minimal distros. I'm finding there is quite a learning curve, even I started in linux with RedHat 5.1.

Doing so resulted in me losing the ability to control the sound from the panel, which I value so I put it back.Once I restored the indicator applet to the panel, the nm-applet went missing. I'm still connecting to my home network with no problem, so the function is there, but the little icon that updates when you're trying to connect, shows signal strength, and other available networks is now missing. This I've searched the problem and haven't found any solutions that work, I think because of the new applet integration, but I'm very surprised this hasn't been found by someone yet!

Started testing F12 today, and ran into this. It takes about 30 s to start KPackagekit. Thats about 30 times slower than F11.

I disabled the Libna repo by setting enabled=0 in /etc/yum.repos.d/livna.repo, and have been able to update with Yum.KPackageKit fails on me now with the message "Failed to initialize backend. This may occur if other packaging tools are used simultaneously."Then it fails to finish, which causes me to reboot before I can use Yum successfully.Under Settings, I see no indication that it knows where the repositories are, and no way to add repos.

View 7 Replies View RelatedThe problem: when kpackagekit would prompt me to update packages, it would ask for my password. I would enter it, and the dialog would reject it with the message "incorrect password, please try again". Over and over. The password WAS correct -- it worked in Synaptic and on the command line using sudo, and obviously it also worked for logging in.
I suddenly had a hunch that kpackagekit might not be the culprit, and that authentication was being done by a different program -- and lo and behold, the dialog actually said policykit up there...
So, searching for policykit problems out there, I ended up seeing someone reinstalling theirs for their problem (which happened to be different from mine). The code to do that, in the command line:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall policykit
After that, entering the password after kpackagekit prompts me to has worked fine and the updates happen as nature intended.
I finally gave in and took the plunge - I upgraded from kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. I knew better but I did it anyway. I got a few fglrx-related error messages during upgrade, but it was too late to do anything. Here's the problem - I can't update or download any software using either Kpackagekit or apt-get. If I try I get an error message about unmet dependencies.

I have installed Kubuntu Lucid x86 10.4 LTS for the first time. Has anyone got a link that explains how KPackageKit gets the IP address of the repositories? I can install packages using sudo apt-get install xxx OK . KpackageKit tells me I have updates from the repositories. I can select them all and apply , but I get an error that it can't find the repository under a 192.168.100.129:8080 address . Which is not a surprise . I am using mirror.optus.net as a repository and can ping it fine on the command line. So is there somewhere else that KPackageKit maps IP addreses ? I have tried another mirror mirror.aarnet.edu.au and got similar results. My local sub-net is not 192.168.100 and have tried setting fixed IP on the local sub-net and different DHCP addresses and still the same error.
