OpenSUSE :: Desktop Shortcut Won't Start App
Sep 13, 2010
I installed matlab for linux via the installer. When I type into the terminal as normal user:
Code:
matlab
the program starts perfectly fine. I want now a click-able icon on the desktop (KDE3.5). So when I produce the application shortcut, no matter how I do define the command, it will not start. I did put Command: matlab (tried also matlab glnx86) I joined in advanced: start in terminal (but it does not work either) I did join the complete and correct path...... Somehow....I do not understand why it starts from the console in user-mode without problems with the command but not while using a shortcut.

even though this is a simple task I always have problems to do this.I want to execute the following#!/bin/bashjava -jar JabRef-2.6.jaror in other words this is the command I use in konsole to make the application to launch. Then usully I try to create a desktop in the icon either by using a. create link to locationorb. create link to application.where I select as file the file myfile.sh that contains the two lines of code I posted above (see again below)
"#!/bin/bashjava -jar JabRef-2.6.jar"I do this file executable by using the chmod +x.Sometimes I think this works while others like now I only receive the cursor bouncing for sometime before it dissapears

I'm using Gnome on openSUSE 11.2. I can't get rid of the ctrl-alt-d keyboard shortcut in Gnome. I have set it to "disabled" in control center -> keyboard shortcuts, but no luck.
When I run the gnome-keybindings-properties program from the terminal it dumps these two messages onto stderr:
(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): keybinding-properties-WARNING **: No description for key '/apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/opacity_decrease_key'
(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): keybinding-properties-WARNING **: No description for key '/apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/opacity_increase_key'
and the following two messages like 20 or so times:
(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_store_append: assertion `VALID_ITER (parent, tree_store)' failed
(gnome-keybinding-properties:11958): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_tree_store_set_valist: assertion `VALID_ITER (iter, tree_store)' failed
I realize this isn't the most critical problem, but I am experimenting with Guile (scheme as a C extension language) which I am editing in Emacs, and even after reassigning "down-list" I keep hitting C-M-d because it's right by C-M-f which I also use constantly, and this minimizes all my windows! And there is nothing on my desktop, I never use the feature intentionally. Maybe I should get a wallpaper that says "HaHa Dummy!" or something of the sort to at least get a chuckle out of it when it happens.

A few months back I reinstalled 11.3 (KDE) over a broken version of 11.3 (kde) the new installation did not allow kde to start. Instead I got a blank screen with a terminal window in the top left corner. If I try " startx " I get the following-
xauth: file /home/fran/.serverauth.2973 does not exist
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
if this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again
xinit: XIO: fatal IO error 11 (resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0"
connection to X server lost after 7 requests (7 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
Removing .X0-lock did not help so at the time I resorted to running gnome untill 11.4 came out. needless to say I have now installed 11.4 and still have the same result IE no KDE .

I uninstalled it and when I booted my computer up some time later, my desktop would not load. Only in fail safe boot option do I get a desktop. Other wise It goes to command shell.I tried startxResult:
xauth: creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.3298

My laptop is a Core 2 Centrino and i installed OpenSUSE 11.3 i586 on it recently. I tried to install the graphic card's driver using this instruction:ATI Installer HOWTO for openSUSE usersafter installation was done, i restarted the system but during the boot, where the openSUSE appears, the screen went black and nothing happened afterward untill i turned of the system manually.i tried again and same result, so i logged in with failsafe and un-installed those packages, now the system boots successfully, but it boots to the terminal instead of the desktop. i might have removed the X server package or something important.now that i have access to terminal and i can log in, i thought i can do something with it and solve it this way rather than re-installing the whole OS.he graphic card is :ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570, if anyone knows how to the driver for this card, please let me know how to.

I've recently upgraded a laptop of mine from 10.10 to 11.04 (Natty), and am having a few issues with it. I don't know how many of these are related to using Unity and how many are just due to the upgrade, but one of the main bugbears is keyboard shortcuts. I have always set the F12 key so that it opens a terminal window. I did this through the settings > Keyboard Shortcuts interface, but although I can (apparently) set this in Unity, it doesn't work. The setting is there, listed, but pressing F12 doesn't open a terminal. Neither does it if I set it to any other key.
I can create a new entry, to start xterm with F12, which works fine but this isn't quite the same as a terminal (it appears different on screen.) I also discover that CTRL+ALT+T doesn't open a terminal window either (as is suggested in a very useful list here: [URL] Have I missed something? Or am I being thick? (Quite possible ... )

I am attempting to recreate terminal commands with a Fedora desktop launcher shortcut to start x360mediaserve. The commands in the terminal work as below:
Code:
cd /opt/x360mediaserve-0.0.2
./start 192.168.2.126
But attempting to run from a desktop launcher, it doesn't work, with the command line:
Code:
sudo /opt/x360mediaserve-0.0.2/start 192.168.2.126
I have also attempted to create a shell script, from which to launch via desktop launcher:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
cd /opt/x360mediaserve-0.0.2
./start 192.168.2.126
which also doesn't work.

This should be simple, but I just don't see it. KDE 4 desktopI have an application located in /usr/Kompozer that I'd like to add a shortcut to on my desktop. It's not on the menu. Runs fine from the command line. Right clicking on desktop doesn't seem to have what I need. I tried using Dolphin file manager, but still no joy. Can copy, but again can't paste a shortcut on the desktop... or so it seems.

I have been trying to make a shortcut to my downloads folder on my desktop but I only seem to be able to create "link to downloads" folder. I thought this was just the same thing as a shortcut but when I run some programs from the folder they do not work correctly. They only work from the real 'downloads' folder and not the 'link to' folder

I just installed Kubuntu with my ubuntu install via Synaptic, just to try it out, and so far it's working great, except for one thing: I have no idea how to make a desktop internet shortcut in Rekonq (The default web browser), and I've tried opening a shortcut I made in Firefox, but it opens it Kate! And when I changed what to open it with to Rekonq, I just got an error page in Rekonq!

I have been trying to active the shortcut <Super>+D to minimize all active windows and show desktop. Compiz is already install on my system, that I have tried all possible combinations of "show desktop" functionality in Compiz and Gnome itself. However, whenever I use the shortcut, it activates(maximize) one window first, and it shows desktop if I use the shortcut second time. Actually same thing happens when I press the "show desktop" button on the panel as well

I'm using Zorin OS 4 Lite, which is a variant of Lubuntu 10.10. For some unknown reason, the desktop shortcut on PCManFM is pointing to my home folder, so I have all my personal files covering my Desktop (kind of annoying to be honest ). And when I try to add a shortcut to the Desktop it adds it to my home folder instead. Seems like there's some kind of hard link between the Desktop shortcut in PCManFM menu and my home folder. However, I can't find where it is or how to fix this. Has anyone else had this problem? How do I fix this?
